Why doesn't Toad's voice sound like it used to?

- Toad has a VERY distinctive voice - loud and screechy is how I'd describe it. But it wasn't always that way - so why on earth did it change so much?

Not gonna lie, I love Toad's modern voice (even more than his honestly kinda bland MK64 voice). Apart from being iconic, it also manages to perfectly walk that fine line of having a raspy and high-pitched voice without going into grating territory; and it actually sounds low-key endearing. And considering how throat-aching that kind of voice is, it's something I give MAD props to.
Well, except for Kelsey Hutchinson's take. No hard feelings towards her, but that one take is *LITERALLY* everything that people who hate Toad's modern voice say Toad's modern voice is.
Time for adventure~
Ehh I don't usually judge people's opinions harshly but the fact that you prefer his annoying voice over his MK64 voice which suited him perfectly is -kinda- questionable.

Despite how much care Nintendo generally puts into sound design in their games, your documentaries have highlighted how haphazardly their voice acting has been managed
they went with a "fuck it it's fine" approach
If I had to guess it probably didn't get much priority because there's barely any actual voice acting in stuff.
There aren't many actual words or sentences they need to record tbf, it's just a whole lot of screeching and "YA-HOO"-ing.
I feel like Nintendo just handles it like stock footage or stock recordings. They just make these actors say a bunch of things/sounds and choose whatever fits the current game and situation lol...

In the voice acting world, many companies hire the same person to voice multiple characters in the show/game/etc. since usually they get to pay the actor for basically only one character in many Instances. Maybe she recorded Toad's voice after doing Peach's lines and her voice was starting to give, or doing a voice that high pitched was out of her range at the volume she needed to project. Or the original clips she was referencing had really bad audio quality and she imitated that. Or doing that voice was fun.
Someone should ask her where the graveliness came from. Maybe she has a Twitter?
Yeah thats what I was thinking, it sounds like she was doing an impression of the original audio that had been compressed. I bet if you compressed the original audio and toned down the quality it would sound similair to Jen's toad voice.
I think it's the Muppet effect. He looks a little like a puppet, so then the tendency is to use a Muppet voice. It's like an adult trying to imitate a small thing but on purpose and then exaggerating... At least it makes sense to me
I’ve always been able to do Toad’s voice fairly well, screaming and all, and my throat hurts for a good while afterwards. Huge props to the people who have to do that as their job.

oml, when I heard the Toad voice the one made to sound like the first Japanese one I was able to do it spot on talking to my dog then right after you are saying it was hard xD
I kinda think Nintendo just went with Toad's voice sounding gruff and screechy as a play on the word TOAD. The voice often has that hoarse and croaky-sound that the expression to have a "frog (toad) in your throat" comes from.
I'll believe it
Well it sounds terrible
The modern Toads always sounded like the actors doing a riff on Toad's voice from the Super Mario Super Show. Toad has a very distinctive raspy voice there and I always thought it was the oddest thing to carry over from that series.
Honestly that voice stuck with me since I was a kid. I thought the Taylor voice was mimicking THAT voice.
@@jordansean18 I heard an interview with John Stocker (who did Toad’s voice in the Super Show and Mario 3 cartoon) a few years ago, and according to the interviewers, they asked/researched the newer voice actors and there’s no real intentional connection. Maybe it’s just the logical place to go for that character.
Right, but I think Thomas should have at least *mentioned* the similarity since that portrayal of Toad had a similarly raspy voice.
@@jordansean18 yes it's far too similar to ignore
I always thought the same thing, since I used to watch that show (yes, I'm old too), and that's always been the voice I most associated with Toad (and, of course, his "squeaky toy" sound effect). But I'm pretty sure it has to be a coincidence, because Nintendo has always considered those shows to be totally unofficial.
Here's an example of Toad in the cartoon: th-cam.com/video/2pMgxVxvldQ/w-d-xo.htmlm20s
So in this instance you should definitely have considered the Super Mario Brothers Super Show as an influence. The screechy demon wail voice started there. I'm certain it was involved in the decision process, either from Nintendo or the VA herself. I kinda love how she sort of reminds me of Marge Simpson too.
