Not sure how old you guys are but I'm in my late 30s, and played Mario 64 all the time for years so the PA PA PA PA PA PAAAAAAH bit at the beginning was stuck in my head a good 8 years prior to NSMB's release. When I got the DS and that game I thought 'huh, cool the same sound' What's even cooler is that every time that bit of music plays the Koopa's do a little dance to it, love that detail! @@Nicl-As-05

@@roachdoggjr722I agree. And I find the text on this video's thumbnail, "Who sang the bahs", kind of misleading because of this. I already knew it came from a sample pack so I felt a little disappointed Thomas didn't try to find out names.
To the best of my knowledge, the reason the pah!s are reused in New is because it was meant to be a quick and easy project for all the devs, recycling assets from Super Mario 64 DS. This is why the eel enemies use Unagi's model, Dorrie shows up, etc. New recycling instruments as well feels par for the course, and connects those games in a really interesting way. On that note it's really funny that all the holdovers carried all the way into Wonder are borne out of something meant to essentially serve as filler.
Many Kirby games feature a Roland keyboard sample that Roland themselves sampled from an earlier sample from Fairlight (the first computer intended for music production) - called ARR1 or SARARR. This sample was also featured prominently in many pop songs from the 1980s to the 2000s, most notably Tears for Fears' Shout. It's a very distinctive sound - a lo-fi recording of an Australian woman by the name of Sarah Cowan singing "uhh". In Kirby circles, it's known as "That Synth". I still regularly use the sampled voice of a former friend, grateful to live in a time when the technology is accessible to anyone with the interest and patience to take advantage of a device they already own. I sometimes think about how a half-second audio clip of a now-stranger saying "aah" into my laptop's microphone has been recontextualized, repeated, etc., so many times, and I don't even try to make it sound like a voice half the time... yet often do... it's amazing how quickly our species has gone from never hearing the same sound twice to being able to hear it thousands of times per minute with wavetable software. Now, I'm thinking about all the interns at electronic music equipment companies that had nice sultry voices, were asked if they could say "aah" into a microphone, and despite their lack of vocal training or practice, ended up on hit records and amateur recordings on the Internet - only to be fired in a week.
The "bah" connection is likely due to Super Mario 64 DS and New Super Mario Bros. both being games released in a close timespan and using a lot of the same music and sound effects.
The original Flipnote Mario drawing song is extremely nostalgic to me. Back then when I got to the special world in Super Mario 3D Land I couldn’t believe what I’m hearing. So glad Nintendo randomly brought it back and I think they should do it again. It’s a nice melody.
I think the syllable in Ashley's Theme mistaken for "hell" is 'tal' in "pantalones giganticus". But the funny thing is the Japanese version has a similar easter egg put there intentionally-- the chant she sings, if reversed, spells what can be pronounced as "Made in Wario is Number One" (Made in Wario is the Japanese name of WarioWare). The English localization, while it did a good job, just made up something silly. Also there are more hidden sounds like that in MK8, including Nook's Cranny, K.K. 9:58 Just a piece of information: the rhythm of the "pah pah" sound seems to be inspired by the song Tokai by Taeko Onuki a very popular jpop song from the 70"
Yeah but given DK mountain was first it was fairly obvious the song was written for that track. Dino Dino Jungle doesn't even have an associated character, instead having a character literally made for the stage. But the easter egg referencing DK Jr is pretty neat. It has the same rhythm, but doesn't have the same notes attributed to the rhythm if you slow them down. Feels more like a coincedence though as DK Mountain sounds more like Mario Sunshine's Pianta village.
In my german textbook, there was a listening exercise about aliens and the at the beginning it played the tower theme track from new super mario bros. I was absolutely shocked and could not even focus on the exercise....
The Mario drawing song is also featured as a secret on the Super Mario Bros game and watch. Here's another music secret: Wii Bowsers Castle sped up sounds like Maple Treeway
THAT is really cool. I love how different music sounds when they're sped up and pitch shifted (and changed to minor key). Great way to reuse similar themes for drastically different music.
maybe you shouldn't have played those games. It wasn't worth that pain, you're missing absolutely nothing by not playing any of the four "new super mario bros" games.
You will miss out on a fair few things if you don’t play the NSMB quadrilogy. There are many unique levels with unique gimmick, odd or obscure enemies, some distinct bosses (mainly in the DS game) and some catchy tunes. Each game is more distinct than you might think.
When Donkey Kong Country 3 was released in Europe, the Nintendo 64 wasn't released until three four months later, so it was such a surprise that I heard Wrinkley 64 in Super Mario 64, thinking "Hey, that's from Donkey Kong Country 3!".
The exact same thing happened to me, and I was totally bamboozled by it when I heard it in Super Mario 64. I was like "Wait a minute, I know this from somewhere else" but wasn't able to pinpoint exactly where I heard it first. Since Donkey Kong Country 3 released first in Europe, I excluded it as a possibility, so it was really confusing to me at that time. I found out after I beat Super Mario 64 and went back to playing some more SNES games, including DKC3.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii The "bah" sound in Mario games originates from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where the overworld music occasionally plays vocal "bah" sounds, to which enemies dance1. It is likely an existing sample from a sound library23.
The music from DK Mountain being based on DK Jr.'s stage theme might not have been a simple homage, as DK Jr. himself was originally going to be DK's partner! DK Jr.'s icon and an image of his model were found in one of the Mario Kart DD demo discs. All thanks to the good people at The Cutting Room Floor.
The "Satanic message" in Wario Ware very much reminds me of the old Satanic Panic here in the US I know of; especially when people would turn records backward to reveal "hidden Satanic messages." It's no surprise that the cause here is every bit as simple, and ironic that it's in a highly similar scenario, with both revolving around turning record discs. For those who may not know, turning a record backward in real life while still playing it simply scratches the record to heck; take that as a pun if you want; and ruins it, making it make noises that humans' naturally pattern-seeking brains interpret as "backward messages."
Yeah, definitely more of fans blowing it way out of proportion than intentional. When they brought the record back in Wario Ware Gold, they added pitch shifts and now randomize the speed and added gibberish sounds so it's not possible to accidently hear the offending phrase. Just a wild coincidence.
What especially gets me about these "conspiracies" is that if they were meant to be there and mean something, would they not, you know, be grammatically correct? Why is it that none of these "Satanic conspiracy messages" even make sense at all as messages?
It's not a TH-cam short. You're actually a loser if you think you "saved" 15 minutes. If you want short form content, go watch your skibbity toilet on shorts.
So Koji Kondo is like the Skrillex of Nintendo because Skrillex is infamous for using the sound clip from the iconic video of a tween girl going “YES!!! OH MY GOSH!!!” in some of his songs😅
We just have to check every single bit of music Koji Kondo has composed. He's the sampler, and we should find every single one of the samples he's used.
I'd guess regarding the Morse Code, they just wanted to have Morse Code to give it a feel of being near a Radio Tower or something... And they just had a little fun with the messages!
I actually found out about the NSMB sound origin on my own a while back while going through some audio CDs. I had download a few from the internet to listen through, namely for the Fire Temple chanting and a TON of stuff from Jet Set Radio, and come to find out, those random "Bah/Pah" sound effects stood out like the sorest of thumbs. It's always super fun to go through stuff like that, and I recommend it to anyone willing to head to the Internet Archive and spend a few minutes downloading a CD or two to go through. Who knows what sounds you might recognize!
She has an amazing range of styles she composes in. I like how she worked on both the original Animal Crossing and came back to the series for New Horizons, even rearranging her own "Radio Exercises" theme
Here a interesting fact: Zelda ocarina of Time used some samples from the Best Services packs and a lot of SFX from Nintendo games come from the Creative ideas and Spectrasonic samples packs.
I’d heard about the Wrinkly Kong easter egg before today and it always sounded just vague enough to me to be coincidental - but the fact that she’s playing an N64 means there’s no way it’s not intentional. That makes it even cooler to me, knowing that Rare either had the insider intel from Nintendo to be able to include the preview, or that they referenced the Japanese hardware early in order to do so.
Love it. One if the best I found was in Mario Galaxy, where hovering over a menu button plays a note from a melody that complements the current background music. It's a bit hard for me to describe, but quickly moving the cursor over menu items reveals a whole extra melody in every background music. They did this more in later games I think.
This is your best video ever!!!!!! I didn't know any of this!!!! All of it is really cool!!!! I think the craziest ones are the WarioWare one and the Wii Sports morse code one!!!! thank you for making this video!!! Keep up the great work Thomas Game Docs!!!!
A minor note: Flipnote Studio is a 2D animation app, not a stop-motion animation app. Stop-motion animation strings together photos taken of objects between altering their positions which gives the appearance of movement. Examples include claymation, brickfilms, movies like Chicken Run, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Coraline etc..
Happy new year Thomas, it’s amazing how a lot of these references go back all the way to Super Mario 64 which is one of the greatest games of all time!
Now THAT is a good homage. The melody, rhythm AND pitch is the same, unlike DK Mountain where the rhythm lines up but the melody is different. Almost completely different, just using similar notes.(Hehe sorry for being pedantic, but as a musician myself it bugs me they're not as similar as they sound to an untrained ear looking for similarities), but the Mario Party 2 thing is so on point as even I didn't know that until you just mentioned it.
TH-camrs are crazy. I just single-handedly watched a whole video of a guy trying to figure out who says “BAH” in Super Mario brothers. And he made a million people do so as well.
this guy has a really good ear to notice all of these, legit these are cool and i was surprised by all of these songs especially the super Mario world special music, i wonder if nintendo land on the wii u has any musical secrets also?
10:38 lmao Prince Hata’s theme from Gintama used this sound. Can’t believe I recognized it instantly even tho I’ve pretty much never thought of it outside this video.
I miss the bah, it makes me remember all the times me and my brother would play Mario Wii, it’s just so nostalgic. The bah sounds so serene, it won’t be forgotten.
One thing I feel adding to the last bit about the SMW Special World theme in the original SNES game (idk about the GBA version), if you let it play for like, 5 to 10 minutes, it will change into SMB1 classic level's theme, it's something I found out because I really LOVE idling on game's menus for no reason at all lol.
This was a bizarre video, I noticed the bah sound from new super mario bros came from mario 64, but that it's orgin was some obscure cd from the 90's is wicked. And boo's merry go round within the teacup ride is a verry hidden song. Well done finding it! Also I like you with long hair! I'm used to you with shorter hair, so this was a pleasant surprise! You kinda look like Ian Gillan
It would be funny if you stayed on the main course world menu for long enough it would switch into the mario 1 ground theme like it does in mario world
And at last, in Super Mario Odyssey, Moe-eyes hum some songs. Here they are: *Super Mario Bros main theme *Super Mario Bros Peach Theme *Super Mario World ending *Super Mario Galaxy Gusty Garden galaxy *Totaka's Song (I don't know the game.) (I think. You should check it.)
12:00 the special world theme form mario world actually houses a secret of its own. When listening to it long enough, a different theme starts to play. I'll let you go and figure out for yourself which theme it is (although it's not too hard to guess)
@@spidermania3708 the song turns into the smb theme. Me and my brother discovered this when we were eating while on the map screen of the special world.
12:50 If you select Endless Challenge on either Expert or Super Expert, the music changes from a remake of Special World to a remake of Valley of Bowser
As someone who's played almost every Mario game since SMB1, that aspect of the music annoyed me so much in NSMB. I almost imagined some koopa troopas making the noise, but I knew that "voice" sounded familiar...
1:17 Also, I know it's unrelated, but..speaking of the N64's release date, if the console came out just a few months before the PS1, would it do well ?
"I have granted kids to hell" is such a bizarre word salad in terms of grammar that even my religious family would have a tough time believing that wasn't a fluke.
10:39 that sounds like the melody/horn that meitetsu line trains play, mainly on inuyama Bridge before 2000, where the train bridge was shared with the road
Wow that DK3 fact was actually quite heartwarming to learn! Specially for the fact that N64 already featured on a SNES game when it wasn't even released in the Western world, and even with an anticipation of a song of one N64 classics that's crazy ❤
could you do a "Why doesn't Wario sound like he used to?" video? i would love to see one, warios voice clips in wario land 4 are quite interesting how they work and the change in wario voice actor too.

Makes sense. Especially when DK.Jr was supposed to be in the game originally as DK’s partner.
He only appears in the audience in Waluigi Stadium, IIRC
and would have made alot of "cranky is og DK" theorist sad.

That's not a theory
That's the actual lore

It’s also the mini game island theme from
Mario party 1
My favorite is that one rising chord during the TotK main theme that echoes the "found an item" jingle.
Tommy Tallarico did it. His mother is very proud.
10:06 truthfully I never really thought about this, but now that I know this, not only can I not unhear it but my mind is utterly blown

That “BA” sound is engraved in my brain and will be in there till the day I die
maybe you shouldn't have played those games.

Ha, that'd be a much stranger reference the other way around.

Anything is possible time time travel
Even stateside I could imagine somebody playing Donkey Kong Country 3 first considering it came out around the same time
The exact same thing happened to me, and I was totally bamboozled by it when I heard it in Super Mario 64.
Wii
The "bah" sound in Mario games originates from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where the overworld music occasionally plays vocal "bah" sounds, to which enemies dance1. It is likely an existing sample from a sound library23.
Bah humbug
The music from DK Mountain being based on DK Jr.'s stage theme might not have been a simple homage, as DK Jr. himself was originally going to be DK's partner! DK Jr.'s icon and an image of his model were found in one of the Mario Kart DD demo discs. All thanks to the good people at The Cutting Room Floor.
7:35 it's like Jump Up Superstar using the theme of Doneky Kong.
idk how this wasn't mentioned tbh
Omg totally
Stop hiding the fact that Nintendo has granted children to hell.
honestly i have always scoffed at people who do this. none of those "secret messages" sounded anything like what ppl claimed they did
@@Gogoseit Yeah, usually not unless you deliberately listen for what they claim they heard, which just brings up confirmation bias, lol.
What especially gets me about these "conspiracies" is that if they were meant to be there and mean something, would they not, you know, be grammatically correct? Why is it that none of these "Satanic conspiracy messages" even make sense at all as messages?

Koji kondo made history on multiple occasions what's your point
Shinobu Nagata mentioned in this video. Thank you. She was my answer under your "most underrated Nintendo composer" community post.
She has an amazing range of styles she composes in. I like how she worked on both the original Animal Crossing and came back to the series for New Horizons, even rearranging her own "Radio Exercises" theme
Fun fact: some sound clips from the best service voice spectral volume 1 was actually used in prototype versions of Mario 64.
Interesting, thanks for letting me know.

For the Double Dash section, you can hear the same music in Mario party superstar’s look away minigame

Also, a special 8-bit version of this song appears in the bonus room in Super Mario Bros Deluxe for the Gameboy Color
