This seems like visuals were THE determining factor, outside of some fan-favorites. This seems especially true at the bottom, where you see a lot of apes and hippos with weird eyes, bad makeup, and awful hair, facial or otherwise. I would suggest that the personalities these characters have say more about the designers' (and perhaps the public's) biases towards certain looks. After all, the respondants flipping through hundreds of pairings were not interacting with these characters. They were just taking a second or two to quickly compare what they saw.

To be honest, I started with "watered down" villager from New Leaf and they still have some individuality even coming from same personality group. For example, lazy "Nate" is different from lazy "Biskit". Nate wakes up late, love to yawning in the morning and evening while Biskit not so much and wakes up early.

Merengue and Azalea are pretty cute rhinos. Broccolo is a mouse villager and he is freaking adorable. But yeah I really hate the gorilla villagers and most of the monkey ones too. Except for Niko.
Notice how many hippos, gorillas, and rats are near the bottom? How many cats and wolves are rated highly? It's not coincidence, when there's only like 4 personality types visuals count for _a lot_ . I think Coco and Tangy are a little ugly, but they're unique in a fun way - Coco being a Gyroid and Tangy being a tasty fruit. Lucky is probably my favorite villager in the towns I've actually had (him, Peanut, Olivia, and Static all way up there). Ankha and Lucky have very _striking_ appearances, risky designs that pay off in spades.
11:25 I almost got PTSD flashbacks when he appeared.. This guy invaded my island uninvited, lived there for about 2 years until he finally decided he wanted to leave. When the game released, i played it for multiple hours every single day. I then had a villager who i wanted to move out and she did quite quickly. I then was hyped because i had recently found out about villager hunting so i had saved up all my nook miles and was able to acquire around 25 tickets. I was ready! The next day the plot was free, but i was not.. I couldn't play all day as i was busy with family, came home exhausted and just prepared the lawn for the next villager i was going to invite (aka removing all the old furniture outside). I wake up and the first thing i did was grab my switch, run a lap around the island and then i turn up to the supposed empty house slot just to see a big red "SOLD" sticker on it.. I checked the name, it was Harry the Hippo.. I looked up who that was and my mood really just went 🤩📉😔
I was sweating, man. I was waiting for Rosie's name to come up and by the time we got to #1 I was like wow she's not gonna be in the top 25??? She was one of my first villagers in Animal Crossing for the GCN and I fell in love with her. She's been my favorite ever since for purely nostalgic reasons. Sasha is a close runner up from the modern lineup. Words cannot express how excited I was when she was one of the first villagers I got in the latest game.
Glad to see another Rosie fan! :D I got introduced to her yours truly by Pocket Camp, around when i still played it. She left quite and impression to me, and even more during the Ac Movie. She quickly become my fav character of all time! -^v^- So when we were getting close to the top 5 popular villagers, i was losing hope and started thinking she wouldn't make the cut. Yeah I love Rosie too but I think your worry is why I feel the list is a bit "biased" (mathematically, not personally). The random nature of the choices would mean characters who appeared more favorably would be picked more, but I just don't hear people talk about Rosie in particular compared to other really popular animals like Marshal. Definitely top 10, maybe even top 3, but what really throws me off is Tangy being number 2.....I never hear people talk about Tangy....EVER. I think she's cute too, but I think people picked her because she looks like an orange and not particularly because she's everyone's "Favorite".

I don’t know if I consider Tom Scott’s entirely accurate either but he had more traffic on his, at least.
I’m pretty shocked Raymond got 35th I thought for sure he was gonna be first based on his popularity. I am so glad Lucky was top 5 he’s my favorite. I also like Rosie, Lolly, and Zucker. It was fun to vote too!

Same one of my favourite villagers is Hopper, I got him in New Leaf and he wasn't the nicest at first but like I feel more of a reward once you get to know them and become good friends with them it's more of a challenge but it's fun in my opinion. He was the first villager to give me his photo.
the villagers who are popular do make sense because when you think about it, their designs seem to be pretty well thought out compared to the least popular/ ugly ones who’s designs sometimes look they were thrown into a automatic generator or something
I would love to see a follow up to this video covering more of the statistics from this survey. Like what are the most popular species or personality types in the series? We clearly see just from this list that positive personalities on dogs and cats take up much of the top, while negative personalities on rhinos, hippos, and gorillas are at the bottom. How would a species like the octopus with fewer but seemingly well-liked villagers stack up against the popular dogs and cats with their larger numbers? P.S. my favorites are Zucker and Roald. I’m so proud of my buddies for cracking the top 25 :)
Am I the only one in the universe who still knows who Rolf is, he was my favorite villager on new leaf, and in horizons I hunted days for him. Truly a nice villager, and a chill one at that.

This^. I kept the ones I always felt like talking to from the beginning of the game. In fact, I have a soft spot for cranky villagers because I sensed some kind of bonding development, especially on GC and WW where hoo boy did they swear a lot more than in the newer titles. Whenever I see a GC villager coming back to me, is like they found their way to home. While I'm sad to see some of them rank up based on aesthetic only, I'm happy to se that in the most popular tier there are still a bunch of classic villagers. Plain design, simple, just the first ones you've ever encountered and became attached to.

My favorite literally IS 25. Whitney JUST making the cut. She's the whole reason I fell in love with this game (even thoug she was quite mean in WIld world, she was literally the first villager to MOVE in. Limberg is an example of a character I hated at first when he arrived in my town in Wild World, but I actually didn't mind him so much after I warmed up to him. He wasn't my favourite villager by any means, but I don't think he deserves so much unpopularity.
Back in 2001 Nintendo held a villager popularity poll in the N64 game and its GC port soon after. The GC ones even came with special passwords with a gift from that character, something that was implemented in the American version but seemingly never used. People wrote in letters, and they're still up on Nintendo's site- it's really interesting to see people supporting their favorite villagers all the way back then! Though the one I found the funniest was someone who compared the lion Aziz to prime minister Junichiro Koizumi… because they're right.
For me, Chow will ALWAYS be my least favorite villager. Reason being, I was BFFs with Melba back in Wild World. She was my favorite. After getting grounded and my DS confiscated for a bit, I came back to Melba leaving and who replaced her? THAT PINK PANDA! Have kept that grudge for almost 2 decades now
What’s super funny is I actually love Limberg, and Harry bc when I first played animal crossing, it was City Folk and they were my very first villagers who I met and they’re so nostalgic for me! Harry always called my siblings and I Beach Bums and it always made us laugh. I can understand why they’re unpopular to others, but I personally love them so much. I’d do anything I could to keep them in my city
I actually understand this. Kiki is this kind of villager for me. I've heard a lot of people call her ugly, and I bet most people just personally look past her which I see why, but I love her so much! She was my right next door neighbor in City Folk when I was little, and as I've grown up black cats have become my favorite cat. That and Kiki's Delivery Service is one of my favorite movies, and she's said to be inspired by that. I love her so much. I see why others may think she's a little unappealing, but I just can't. I finally got her on my ACNH island and I have spoiled her so much lol

Ooohhhh what an interesting topic! You would probably first think of an uglier looking villager but most of them actually are loved by many people because they are uglier
There's a lot of bias in the results (mathematic bias, not personal bias), as given you're given a random choice of 2 villagers and have to pick one over the other, there's a chance that some villagers simply didn't appear often at all, or appeared with match ups that were obviously going to make them lose or push others higher. (like if out of 100 times Jane showed up, 70 times she was paired with Audie or Marshall and only 30 times she was paired with more middle of the road villagers, but only like 2 times was she paired with "uglier" villagers like Dobie or Harry, then it'd seem like she was only liked 2-5/100 times while Audie and Marshall were wildly popular. So while it seemed like the curve would fit a proper line, there's enough error where the Gorillas simply were overlooked because they got unlucky. Similarly at the top, I get Rosie's really cute and easily top 10, but seeing her as number 1 is interesting. As Margie wasn't even top 25 and she was also the main protagonist in the movie, and Fang outshined Whitney by several votes but he only appeared in City Folk and on. Personally as I mentioned elsewhere, a simple "Star, check, empty, minus, and X" system would give more accurate results. check and minus are + and - 1 respectively. Star and X are "Favorite and least favorite" which would be weighted to show which characters were truly actual favorites and not just "liked by the most people", as well as true least favorites and not just "disliked". The list would probably look similar, but you'll get far more accurate results for the extreme cases. Marshal not being top 10 is odd given people gave LOTs of money for Marshall, and i didn't see the other male cat with the hipster glasses who's name escapes me that people dove for as well. As well while some of them are striking like Lucky or Tangy, I don't really imagine they're that many people's "Favorite" as much as a "nice to have" or "noteworthy". Meaning people probably only picked them because they remembered them or they stood out, rather than being a particular favorite. As you can see this fascinates me as well though! Very interesting video!
I clicked on this video because I just knew it would have Limberg slander in it and I'd have to fight for him. He was one of the villagers from my original childhood gamecube town and I'd go to his house all the time just to sit and listen to his gyroids jamming out to K.K. Folk. He'll always be my favourite. Can't say I agree with these rankings. Several of the ones I like are on the bottom. Tammi, Keaton Cashmere, Rilla... I'm sad to see that all of the gorillas are at the bottom. And I love Elise!
I think the major flaw is that it's always random and the character will gain a loss whenever it loses. If there's a more popular character paired with it, it will lose, for example and the more likeable characters will always win. This might be a lot more inefficient but this could have instead been a 15 to 30 minute long questionnaie of randomly arranged set of villagers. It sorts based on who you said you liked more, but it will take into account ranking, then it takes the average ranking of all the villagers into account when tallying their score rather than a win/loss ratio.
Fun fact: Complaining about a villager to Isabel does literally nothing in regards to getting them to move out Also my favourite villager is Harry so I guess I'm pretty contrary

it's actually because each villager will have a personality type and a hobby, making unique combinations in villagers. Rosie having the music hobby and singing without music is not a hobby usually given to her personality type of "Normal"

My first ACNH playthrough I decided no amiibo and no hunting. Whoever I get, I get. I ended up with Sterling and Celia the eagles. I was bummed and then grew to love them. Got their photos and then when they asked to move after their photos I allowed them to leave but I genuinely cried! I was like 30 years old and crying over Celia leaving lol She was never a favorite before but she is now, forever. Thats how some of my favorite Pokemon ended up being favorites too. Just someone you get stuck with and learn to love.
My favorite villager is Boomer because when I played New Leaf for the first time, he moved to my town, and slowly everyone started moving away and being replaced with others, but Boomer stayed, so we kinda just bonded

Most of my favorites made it in or near the top 50 so I'm not too upset. There is the major problem with Flurry being at 130! How can she be that low? She is just too adorable. I'll admit I haven't interacted with every villager (or even near that) but she has always been my favorite.

In my families new horizons island, Tangy has become our resident "creepy" villager, mostly because we weren't fans of how they made Peppy villagers were portrayed in new horizons. We mostly keep her around for the recipes, and now for the running joke about how she's the graveyard keeper.

While I understand not having Hello Kitty herself as a villager, copyright or something probably, no matter how perfect she'd be as one, having her representative be a gorilla feels kinda cruel? They could have picked a better kind of animal, anyway. Like maybe a knockoff Hello Kitty, they are all supposedly huge fans of the characters they represent, so having essentially knockoffs, wannabes, or lookalikes as the representatives would have worked way better.

I’m pretty shocked Raymond got 35th I thought for sure he was gonna be first based on his popularity. I am so glad Lucky was top 5 he’s my favorite. I also like Rosie, Lolly, and Zucker. It was fun to vote too!

Same one of my favourite villagers is Hopper, I got him in New Leaf and he wasn't the nicest at first but like I feel more of a reward once you get to know them and become good friends with them it's more of a challenge but it's fun in my opinion. He was the first villager to give me his photo.

the villagers who are popular do make sense because when you think about it, their designs seem to be pretty well thought out compared to the least popular/ ugly ones who’s designs sometimes look they were thrown into a automatic generator or something

I would love to see a follow up to this video covering more of the statistics from this survey. Like what are the most popular species or personality types in the series?
We clearly see just from this list that positive personalities on dogs and cats take up much of the top, while negative personalities on rhinos, hippos, and gorillas are at the bottom.
How would a species like the octopus with fewer but seemingly well-liked villagers stack up against the popular dogs and cats with their larger numbers?
P.S. my favorites are Zucker and Roald. I’m so proud of my buddies for cracking the top 25 :)

This^. I kept the ones I always felt like talking to from the beginning of the game. In fact, I have a soft spot for cranky villagers because I sensed some kind of bonding development, especially on GC and WW where hoo boy did they swear a lot more than in the newer titles. Whenever I see a GC villager coming back to me, is like they found their way to home. While I'm sad to see some of them rank up based on aesthetic only, I'm happy to se that in the most popular tier there are still a bunch of classic villagers. Plain design, simple, just the first ones you've ever encountered and became attached to.

Limberg is an example of a character I hated at first when he arrived in my town in Wild World, but I actually didn't mind him so much after I warmed up to him. He wasn't my favourite villager by any means, but I don't think he deserves so much unpopularity.

Back in 2001 Nintendo held a villager popularity poll in the N64 game and its GC port soon after. The GC ones even came with special passwords with a gift from that character, something that was implemented in the American version but seemingly never used. People wrote in letters, and they're still up on Nintendo's site- it's really interesting to see people supporting their favorite villagers all the way back then! Though the one I found the funniest was someone who compared the lion Aziz to prime minister Junichiro Koizumi… because they're right.
For me, Chow will ALWAYS be my least favorite villager. Reason being, I was BFFs with Melba back in Wild World. She was my favorite. After getting grounded and my DS confiscated for a bit, I came back to Melba leaving and who replaced her? THAT PINK PANDA!

What’s super funny is I actually love Limberg, and Harry bc when I first played animal crossing, it was City Folk and they were my very first villagers who I met and they’re so nostalgic for me! Harry always called my siblings and I Beach Bums and it always made us laugh. I can understand why they’re unpopular to others, but I personally love them so much. I’d do anything I could to keep them in my city
I actually understand this. Kiki is this kind of villager for me. I've heard a lot of people call her ugly, and I bet most people just personally look past her which I see why, but I love her so much! She was my right next door neighbor in City Folk when I was little, and as I've grown up black cats have become my favorite cat. That and Kiki's Delivery Service is one of my favorite movies, and she's said to be inspired by that. I love her so much. I see why others may think she's a little unappealing, but I just can't. I finally got her on my ACNH island and I have spoiled her so much lol

Ooohhhh what an interesting topic! You would probably first think of an uglier looking villager but most of them actually are loved by many people because they are uglier
There's a lot of bias in the results (mathematic bias, not personal bias), as given you're given a random choice of 2 villagers and have to pick one over the other, there's a chance that some villagers simply didn't appear often at all, or appeared with match ups that were obviously going to make them lose or push others higher. (like if out of 100 times Jane showed up, 70 times she was paired with Audie or Marshall and only 30 times she was paired with more middle of the road villagers, but only like 2 times was she paired with "uglier" villagers like Dobie or Harry, then it'd seem like she was only liked 2-5/100 times while Audie and Marshall were wildly popular. So while it seemed like the curve would fit a proper line, there's enough error where the Gorillas simply were overlooked because they got unlucky. Similarly at the top, I get Rosie's really cute and easily top 10, but seeing her as number 1 is interesting. As Margie wasn't even top 25 and she was also the main protagonist in the movie, and Fang outshined Whitney by several votes but he only appeared in City Folk and on.
Personally as I mentioned elsewhere, a simple "Star, check, empty, minus, and X" system would give more accurate results. check and minus are + and - 1 respectively. Star and X are "Favorite and least favorite" which would be weighted to show which characters were truly actual favorites and not just "liked by the most people", as well as true least favorites and not just "disliked". The list would probably look similar, but you'll get far more accurate results for the extreme cases. Marshal not being top 10 is odd given people gave LOTs of money for Marshall, and i didn't see the other male cat with the hipster glasses who's name escapes me that people dove for as well. As well while some of them are striking like Lucky or Tangy, I don't really imagine they're that many people's "Favorite" as much as a "nice to have" or "noteworthy". Meaning people probably only picked them because they remembered them or they stood out, rather than being a particular favorite. As you can see this fascinates me as well though! Very interesting video!

Can't say I agree with these rankings. Several of the ones I like are on the bottom. Tammi, Keaton Cashmere, Rilla... I'm sad to see that all of the gorillas are at the bottom. And I love Elise!
I think the major flaw is that it's always random and the character will gain a loss whenever it loses. If there's a more popular character paired with it, it will lose, for example and the more likeable characters will always win.
This might be a lot more inefficient but this could have instead been a 15 to 30 minute long questionnaie of randomly arranged set of villagers. It sorts based on who you said you liked more, but it will take into account ranking, then it takes the average ranking of all the villagers into account when tallying their score rather than a win/loss ratio.

From memory, the default is singing your island tune… But if you have music playing on your island somewhere, they can sing that. 🤷♀️
it's actually because each villager will have a personality type and a hobby, making unique combinations in villagers. Rosie having the music hobby and singing without music is not a hobby usually given to her personality type of "Normal"

Hans is fairly popular from what I can tell. Boone is my favorite jock his design is great and he's the one I kept of my original ten.
My first ACNH playthrough I decided no amiibo and no hunting. Whoever I get, I get. I ended up with Sterling and Celia the eagles. I was bummed and then grew to love them. Got their photos and then when they asked to move after their photos I allowed them to leave but I genuinely cried! I was like 30 years old and crying over Celia leaving lol She was never a favorite before but she is now, forever. Thats how some of my favorite Pokemon ended up being favorites too. Just someone you get stuck with and learn to love.
My favorite villager is Boomer because when I played New Leaf for the first time, he moved to my town, and slowly everyone started moving away and being replaced with others, but Boomer stayed, so we kinda just bonded

In my families new horizons island, Tangy has become our resident "creepy" villager, mostly because we weren't fans of how they made Peppy villagers were portrayed in new horizons. We mostly keep her around for the recipes, and now for the running joke about how she's the graveyard keeper.

While I understand not having Hello Kitty herself as a villager, copyright or something probably, no matter how perfect she'd be as one, having her representative be a gorilla feels kinda cruel? They could have picked a better kind of animal, anyway. Like maybe a knockoff Hello Kitty, they are all supposedly huge fans of the characters they represent, so having essentially knockoffs, wannabes, or lookalikes as the representatives would have worked way better.

I get the love for Tangy, i really do. I usually dislike the most popular ones just through seeing them too much, but i got Tangy on my first island really early on, and she kept me coming back. Plucky and Tangy are more beloved to me than a large chunk of my extended family
