Enjoyed the journey through Muthaiga with a competent driver! My first introduction to Muthaiga was being taken to lunch at the Muthaiga Club by Joseph Murumbi (ex Vice President under Mzee Kenyatta) this was during 1973. I remember Joseph telling me that prior to Independence "Being an African, I wouldn't have been allowed to lunch here!" I felt ashamed to be British - & still am when I think of the injustices of colonialism.

CORRECTION.. muthaiga was part of the forested ecosystems that included karura forest.. the kikuyus have set these areas for traditional ceremonies and herbs gathering, hence the name muthaiga for medicine.. the area also provided a cover as protection aganist attacks from athi or plain maasai, whose boundary was mbagathi river..

@Anonymous you are actually reinforcing my point. there was great land management. these lands were actually set apart for those purposes . it is known that the whole karura forest as well as lands going east upto present day city park actually had trustees, and those lands were "sustained" by curses, to whoever would think on settling or building on these forested areas. colonialist found those forests intact when they invaded upto now.additionaly, the forest cover, going all the way to mbagathi provided protection from kikuyu enemies, maasai on the athi plains...

Fantastic images..and am glad to let you know i lived in muthaiga and grew up here between 1975 to 1984 and left after my A LEVELS to live in south c but my parents continued living there at a house on muthaiga rise until 1999.
i now reside in the UK from 2003 i know every street and homes in that area and can confirm the former kibaki president moved there from valley arcade area along ole odume road in 1976 to muthaiga.
charles njonjo and also former vice president in the 60s Dr murumbi were probably he first africans to live here. murumbis house is along muthaiga road was converted into a kenya national archives with a collection of artifacts belonging to Dr murumbi..its probably grabbed now .
next to murumbis home was a massive home owned by the kenya railways cooperation.this house was meant to house the top management eg managing directors of the then very rich parastatal.. unfortunately..the government took over this house in the 80s to house the then minister for transport and telecoms Henry kosgei.. who even after leaving the ministry grabbed this house..for himself complete with all ameneties....house had a swimming pool and stood on a one acre Plot opposite the embassy of switzerland residence. people like central bank governor ERICK kotut moved into another house opposite embassy of ghana..people like Henry kinyua the then MD of the rich KPCU bought a house on muthaiga crescent just after the USA ambassador's residence....the kinyuas and the kibaki boys were very close andi used to see then riding their trail bikes now and then ..the kibakis lived on Tchui road not far from the njonjos and the british high commission residence. on karura avenue we had the ELIJAH mwangales..then minister for foreign affairs..from there opposite we had the italian embassy and belgium embassy residence..these homes were dwarfed by a huge home standing on nearly 10 acres of land owned by a retired british royal air force ace hero called SIR Marlin Sorsbie..this man had a huge home the size of a school and he had servants qts for nearly 40 staff. am told he died early 2000.. but not sure who inherited his huge estate..
FROM HERE still on karura avenue we had the embassy of oman .and then behind it embassy of ZAIRE and lesotho ambassador residence. along limuru road we had the indian high commission residence on a huge land next o muthaiga mini market. it was fun growing up here and i plan to make a tour once i revisit kenya by end of this year.
keep up the good work. I SUGGEST YOU REVISIT and film along karura avenue upto the end of it..fo all the inner streets from the golf club try and follow all the side roads and you will see amazing houses .go to serengeti avenue.. muhaiga close etc and also see here mama ngina kenyatta has a huge home.. i think on muthaiga close.. i can see your video only covered the main roads muthaiga road from start and then back onto limuru road only
