Listening to the composition of Stage 2 very much reminded me of the 5 stages of grief.
In stage 2 the patient has noticed the signs of dementia, and I wondered how the songs fit the emotions in that moment. So I relistened to EATEOT and here is my interpretation:
*C1- A Losing Battle is Raging* is denial. It's not very somber - it sounds very adventurous. But it's so much more "distant" then what we saw in the first stage. White noise covers the entire track with the instruments sounding like it's taking the backstage instead of the front stage. This is the track that sends the redflag. You get a checkup.
*C2 - Misplaced in Time* is anger, or at least it sounds VERY unhappy. It's confirmed you have dementia and it's awful and you've heard the stories. You're going to literally lose everything. This song is all doom and gloom.
The title "Misplaced in Time" has the feeling that the patient feels like that they are in a moment of shock.
*C3 - What Does it Matter How my Heart Breaks* is bitterness. The title pretty much says it all. They're shaken but their worry is more in place with their loved ones than themselves - they're a loss cause and they're more worried about them? "Why does it matter how I feel when you guys have to endure it too? What does it matter if I don't remember it tomorrow?"
This is the "core memory", a.k.a "It's Just a Burning Memory" again. The caretaker community associates this and later iterations with being memory's about the patients loved ones because "Heartaches", the song that is sampled from, is a song about aching for their loved ones.
The revelation of dementia has affected this core memory, thinning it with melancholy.
*C4 - Glimpses of Hope in Trying Times* is bargaining. The patient is probably scrolling online looking at the effects of dementia, what medication they'll have to be on in future times. Maybe trying to find articles about how dementia might just be "memory loss with extra steps". The word... "incurable", however, always gnaws. And it is hungry... and it is draining. There is much hopelessness in this song, and you cannot run away from it. But preparation is better than nothing at all.
*C5 - Surrending to Despair* is mild acceptance with a tinge of sadness. There's nothing to do, but the patient is coming to terms that they should still do something despite the hopelessness of the situation. This song, despite it's name, is much more cheerful than the previous one.
*D1 - I Still Feel As Though I Am me* is invigoration. The patient has decided to live while they can, while they're still them as they know it. This song feels like a journey through the mist, and it has a ton of buildup. It's a little scary at first - to give hope - but after the apprehension it was better than standing still.
This song is about regaining the courage to still stand up despite it all.
*D2 - Quiet Dusk Coming Early* is much more colorful in it's composition but more in the department of grays. It's sad, but a happy sad. There's a lot of reflection in this memory and moment. I feel like I'm watching snow fall with nothing better to do but wait. It's a time waster for them and they know that. But the moment is still beautiful.
*D3 - Last Moments of Pure Recall* we've hit something very joyous. It's so cheery, like it's Christmas morning. There isn't any underlying sadness this time, just a good moment to enjoy.
*D4 - Denial Unraveling* Hopelessness. Realization. It hits hard and it has the chance to put you down. It's an echoey room and all you have is smoldering thoughts. The song constantly sounds like it's trying to pick itself back up from the sad parts till it reaches the thrill of the violins. But it keeps going back down. Then up. Then down.
*D5 - The Way Ahead Feels Lonely* Acceptance. This sounds exactly how I imagine walking down a lonely road would sound like. Coming to terms with everything I've been through. Alone. Melancholic. There is no hope. But its not depressed - it's not anxious. The song sounds like it's ready, it's okay. Their loved ones look in sadness and fear about what they know is to come. The patient knows what will come too, but they try to hide it. At this moment they've accepted the journey and will walk it, and they won't walk it limping. At the end of the song the patient gives a pained smile. They say "farewell".
Then Back There Benjamin plays.
Thank you for that, it was awesome to read! It's interesting to me how some of your interpretations overlap with mine, and in what ways they're different. The word "decay" comes to mind for a lot of the tracks in this stage, especially in C1, with how grainy it is and how those atmospheric synths choke the song, and C3, which is agonizing to listen to.
For C5, despite you describing the song as cheerful, I've always felt that it has the vibe of a defeated army march or funeral song, as if they're playing the song before leaving the territory they've conceded.
D3 as well, despite it's strong sense of cheerfulness, has a tempo that's really close to that of a ticking clock, and coupled with the words "Last Moments", makes it feel foreboding and anxiety-inducing
This is a wonderful description of each of the tracks. As someone with early onset dementia the way you described and fleshed them out put words to the feelings I have toward them, words that I would’ve been unable to find myself. The way you hit the nail on the head of some of them hit close to home.
Then, Benjamin casually says "Hey! I'm back there!"
One of my very favorite comments about this album ever. Funny enough for me D2 is agonizing, it brings me to tears it just sounds so sad. But I can see how it’s a beautiful sad, unlike C3 which is just depressing. One word I feel best describes D5 is grace and dignity. They will walk the loneliest road a person can walk. Into death where no one can reach them eventually as they will forget everything and everyone. D5 has such a beauty understated ending, it’s elegant and funereal.
Then Back There Benjamin comes in to say “this is going to be so much worse than you ever imagined, there’s no dignity here.” The contrast between D5 and E1 really make for a powerful gut punch.
@@jefferycorley8006 Describing Back There Benjamin as a loss of dignity is really a very apt descriptor. There's a certain nobility to the second stage, I imagine because all of the stages, it's the only one that allows the songs to play in full. But E1 is so loud and chaotic compared to the understated sadness of Stage 2 that it immediately shatters the notion of a noble defeat. It's like Stage 2 goes from denial to depression to a humble acceptance, and E1 appears out of nowhere, before D5 can even finish, and in doing so it throws all those notions out of the window.
Only veterans will remember when the description said "So. Many. Inconsistent. Tempos."
The fact that there were people watching this video early enough to catch that is crazy to me hahaha

To those wondering why that is, it’s because many samples from Stage 2 are from recordings of old, damaged cylinders, not because Kirby edited it to be inconsistent

So it's not immediately obvious in one specific spot - more like the video drifts out of sync somewhere in the middle (D1 seems to be the worst offender, you can try 8:20 I guess) and then drifts back in towards the end.
I noticed it when compiling the final video, but didn't want to re-render the whole thing all over again, so I guess I'll just live with the consequences ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for noticing haha. Yeah, Stage 2 really needs them shown, so I made sure to do so. Stage 1 also has a few songs where it's used, but you can find out which ones through the sheet music link.
What are the pedals
@@RubyPiec pedals basically elongate the note. It’s why the note lingers around instead of being short and stumpy or however long the pianist holds the note for manually. Stage 2 has a fair amount of reverb so it makes sense to use it.
@@RubyPiec Look at the bottom right. If it looks like it's always on, that's because it almost always is :D but watch out for the flash of it turning off

I have headcanon of one of my characters dying from dementia, and I just imagine them singing along as a ghost while stting next to one of their loved ones playing lullaby of the leaves on piano. What can I say, your cover of C2 is very emotional and grief-like I'm crying atm. 11/10, this is a masterpiece

Same here. One of my character is also suffered from it. It's one of the reasons why i decided to listen to Everywhere at the end of time in the first place (another being that theme of memory is very important to me. For many reasons)

this cover reminds me of how beatiful of an instrument is a piano. it turned these gritty, white noise and paranoia inducing songs into such beautiful melodies.
Yeah, I've realized that most of the unpleasantness that you hear in the original album comes in the atmosphere and the specific nature of the sounds being played rather than the notes of the songs themselves.
The transition from the first song to the second is just so good, I love it

This is great, I've been practicing a few songs lately because of how good they are. What are you planning to do about stages 4 - 6? Only thing you can make out in those parts are the final minutes and small bits

I was wondering... did you learn the pieces by ear? Or are you using sheet music from the original samples?
Thanks for your question! The answer is, I try everything by ear first, but I have a number of tools at my disposal in case that fails. For instance, I go on a website called Chordify to help me identify some of the trickier 7-chords. I will also consult original sampled songs (transposed) if the Caretaker version has notes that are hard to parse out (this was the case for A5 - Slightly Bewildered).
If even that is proving to be too hard, or if Chordify is not being precise enough, then I will go hunting for the original sheet music. Sometimes this will take me to remarkably obscure places: you can check the description for some of the sheet music I was able to dig out. Something like 15:43 would not have been possible without the aid of the original Grand Canyon Suite score.
This stage is so heartwrenching but so beautiful. Are you planning on doing stage 3??
