    I think that if the country you're at war with ceases to exist, it's safe to say that the war is over and your side won.

      I can see it in 1990: “I say Monty, where are you going with that tank battalion? Oh the war the Jerries you know. We’re making the final push to Berlin!”

    Wouldn't a war end as soon as one of the parties *ceased* to exist, rather than waiting to end until they existed again??

      yeah, what if Germany never reunited? Then the war would still be technically going on? This is BS.

    This is so wrong. Unified Germany is not a successor state of East and West Germany, it's a continuation of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany).

      Yeah, and the allies weren’t exactly fighting East and/or west Germany in ww2 either.

    Actually, WWII has not ended yet. WWII was not just European conflict and Russia and Japan never signed peace treaty due to Kuril Islands dispute.

      World War 2 ended in 1945 by all conceivable legal definitions of war. The fact that there remains a territorial dispute between Japan and Russia does not constitute an international armed conflict (which is the legal definition of a "war"). A war ends, in the legal sense, with the cessation of hostilities and the general close of military operations.

    I went in to my place of work, my local pub, a large family gathering and any stranger who cared to listen and proclaimed loud and mighty that the Second World War ended in 1990. I gave the same explanation QI gave and as a result I have been laughed at, beaten up, disowned by my children and sectioned under the Mental Health Act. Thank you QI

    So the Civil War never ended since the CSA no longer exists? This reasoning makes zero sense.

  • @Activated_Complex
    @Activated_Complex 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    There’s one slight problem with that answer. The reunited state of Germany is officially the enlarged continuation of the Federal Republic of Germany, aka West Germany, with the capital relocated from Bonn to Berlin.
    Which is why, you can see that Merkel’s predecessor in her office was Gerhard Schroeder, whose own predecessor was Helmut Kohl.
    In contrast, the man with the funny mustache was succeeded only by Donitz. The version of Germany that was placed under the former’s brutal regime did not long outlive him, and was not re-established in 1990. It no longer exists today.
    As for the treaty that, at long last, settled the status of postwar Germany, it resolved (far from perfectly) a dispute left over from the war. But suggesting it ended the war itself is mere disingenuous clickbait.

      You weren't. World War 2 ended in 1945 by all conceivable legal definitions of war. A war ends, in the legal sense, with the cessation of hostilities and the general close of military operations. What was said in this clip is flat out incorrect. I just finished 3 years of study on international law, in particular the law of war, at the University of Geneva, and I don't know a single legal expert or historian who would agree with this conception.

  • @aniareilska

    It is not accurate, imho. If we go after this logic, then there was no Germany in 1939 as well... There was German Reich (Deutsches Reich) or Greater German Reich (Großdeutsches Reich), and after the reunification in 1990 there is Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland).

  • @TotallyRadicoolDude
    @TotallyRadicoolDude ปีที่แล้ว

    Technically, WW2 still isn't over. WW2 wasn't just between the British empire and Germany, it was also between lots of other countries too, including between Russia and Japan, and the 2 still haven't officially signed a peace treaty because they can't agree on who the Kuril islands belong to.

    Unfortunately Fry has a bad habit of twisting the facts-he would make a good politician, he is the Master of Spin. West Germany was a member of NATO in 1955, East Germany was a member of The Warsaw Pact. Not sure how you can be at war with front line allies. The Treaty he is referring to is 2+4 Treaty of 1991 which released Germany (by then united) from any post war restrictions. The UK, France & US decided to end the state of war in 1951 in the Petersberg Agreement of 1950, Australia (9 July), Canada, Italy, New Zealand, the Netherlands (26 July), South Africa, the United Kingdom (9 July), and the United States (19 October).The state of war between Germany and the Soviet Union was ended in early 1955. Fry does this regularly, he is totally incompetent.

      @@christianforsstrom2222 one would hope that the researchers would do a better job than that, plus Fry is Cambridge educated and again one would have higher expectations of someone as well educated as him. I have noticed in the past tho that he sometimes gets his facts in a right twist. Something that his replacement doesn't. Not quite sure why there is a difference.

    WW2 have not ended, as mentioned, Russia and Japan have not signed any peace treaty while China P.R and both Korea were left out at the Treaty of San Francisco which was the final peace treaty for WW2.

    • @MarkHogan994
      @MarkHogan994 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is actually not remotely required that there be a peace treaty between all parties for a war to end. Actually, no peace treaty is required at all. hört.zu.und.wiederholen "I don't know any Brit or European that thinks it was just a war between Germany and Britain."
      Well I don't know any Americans who think the war was just between Germany and America, yet we get slapped with that stereotype anyway.
      And in point of fact, you do know of a Brit who thinks that: Alan Davies
      While normally I'd be willing to believe it's just Alan and most British people don't think that way, I can't help but notice that no one in the studio reacted to what he said. The audience didn't laugh or boo at his comment. Even Steven Fry, who once corrected a QI guest on the difference between "less" and "fewer", couldn't muster up so much as a giggle at Alan's wildly wrong statement.
