@@bakedbeansman oh, no, speech tends to be one of the last things to go. before that, a person's ability to remember what they've said, or what other people have said, is greatly affected. when it gets to the point that the person is slurring their words, using the wrong words, or forgetting basic grammar or sentence structure, that's when things are very dire.
i think the metaphor here is that the person can remember certain parts of the music and faint words, but can't remember specifics like the actual lyrics or the order of notes. they're trying to recall how the song went, but all they can remember is some of the horn sequences and parts of words.

The theatre is packed tonight. You smile a little ways to your lover, who smiles back assuringly. Suddenly the lights dim, spotlights drifting to the lead singer of tonight, Al Bowlly, while the melody of his newest song plays. Closing your eyes, you bask in the presence of the lyrics washing over you, accompanied by the trumpets singing their tunes. All of a sudden you hear someone calling your name. You crack your eye open slyly, as if expecting your partner to greet you back, but you are only met with a record player. Playing a song. The song. Heartaches? Weren’t you just at the theatre? But where was Al Bowlly? Your head hurts, it felt so real. Too real. It couldn’t have just been a memory, could it have? Was it all just a burning memory?

I trust that you'll feel better over time, we're often stronger than we might think but there's also no shame in talking to people about it if you feel you can't handle it alone. either way I hope that you have a good christmas and I sincerely wish you all the best in giving this a place.

we are so used to the horror of fear; the lurking creature, the monster in the dark, the angry mob, etc
Everywhere at the end of time is a different kind of fear that very few (yet too many) people experience. the horror of nothingness.
first you can't remember where your wife is, and it scares you
then you can't remember her name, and it frustrates you
in the end, there was never even a wife to remember, and you are at "peace"
"Peace" in the sense that silence is music. after all, why fear losing your memories when there is nothing to even remember.

Well in the album this first stage represents how "we" or "the person" suffering with dimentia is trying pass of the slowly deteriorating memory off as just a part of age. The songs title fits this too as it's called "A burning memory" as if it's just starting to fade away. The similarities between these things are how we put our feelings down a lot of the time and sometimes ignore the problems we have as a whole. But the longer we do it the worst they become as those feelings keep piling up and over. The reality is that we all feel like shit and feel even more helpless. But even if the source of depression or in this case dimentia is not clearly defined it's still not worth it to ignore it. In the long run it evolves and continues to eat at us. Meeting your needs is the best possible thing a person can do for themselves.

The vocals trying to linger on but slowly fading away gives me a sense of dread, as the former beautiful song slowly turn into nothing but a shadow of it's former self, still beautiful but, not quite complete, and listening to it be more and more faded and forgotten in the full album makes this even sadder. I consider this to be stage 0.5, very well done.

At around 3 am, on the morning of April 17th 1941, a German parachute mine landed outside of his flat on Duke Street/ Duke court. And the force of the explosion caused windows to break and caused Al's bedroom door to fly off it's hinges and hit Al as he slept in the head, killing him almost instantly.

This songs lyrics actually become really dark in the context of the album... its originally just an old song about losing past lovers but specifically in this version, the way it was slowly slowed and pitched down represents the memory loss setting in a lot better, the patient is slowly realizing what's happening and is now accepting it. I love the way the lyrics of the song got twisted too, originally he was talking about how those past lovers just become bad memories, "it's just a burning memory", then it gets twisted into something really dark, like the patient's memories slowly "burning" away, especially when he said it near the end, it slowly twisted the song into a dark representation of what the beginning of dementia is like... when your memories start slipping away and you know what's going on but you cant so anything about it

  • @ChrisPoindexter98

I just thought of the most horrific version of portraying this; Al Bowlly or some performer as healthy and complete at the beginning, but as time goes along, the other musicians turn into realistic cadavers with instruments leaning on their "bodies," the main singer physically ages and takes on remaining machinery and becomes more of an one-man-band, the venue becomes more dilapidated, et cetera...until at the very end, the vocalist looks around, only to see a run-down arena, their omnifarious musical set-up, and stood-up corpses...or worse?!? On second thought, and based on replies, it could just be puppets or mannequins that vaguely resemble them instead of real bodies. Maybe they're standing lonely in a hospital room, just the one person, realizing even the neglected setting, few tools at hand, and remains of their old friends were all their imagination, but either way, breaking into tears upon this sobering realization and the song coming to a close only to finally see...or be willing to acknowledge all this. Also, I lovingly say this; screw you, original creator, for making this so entertainingly disturbing and unsettling by having this perfectly decent photo be slowly, asymmetrically defiled half sideways, but not completely, with pieces from all six stages. It actually even unsettled my cleanliness/orderliness fixations far more so the second than the first time!

I like it, but the 'corpse' thing seems a bit edgy. Maybe if they just... faded away, with their instruments sitting on the floor as though they were ready to play but never returned. Everything else sounds cool, especially the singer aging, looking around and realizing they're alone... oof.

There's a famous artist named Patsy Cline who did a cover of this song. When I was a girl, my mother would let me use her ipod to listen to music and Patsy was one of the artists she had collections of. When I was 14, I bought a cassette tape of her best works because I enjoyed them from my childhood. Even though everywhere at the end of time is such a terrifying composition, I always found the first melody sticking in my head, and the names of all the songs which had the melody in it also called out to me. It wasn't until last night when I put on the cassette again for some music that I recognized the melody in heartaches and realized the reason those melodies from everywhere at the end of time stood out to me was because I have heard this song my whole life. A melody I knew my whole life but forgot it's name. Pretty scary and fitting of the album so I thought I'd share.

I love the fact that the lyric “Just a burning memory” stands out more than the others near the 2nd 3rd. It really sets in stone the feeling of the transformation and gives reason for the track title being what it is in EatEoT. Great touch!
