Earthworm Jim wasn't always a studly super-worm. He was once just a spineless, dirt-eater with no real mission in his life... But then something unexpected happened. The evil Psy-Crow was transporting a super suit, built by the genius Professor Monkey-For-A-Head, to Queen Pulsating, Bloated, Festering, Sweaty, Pus-Filled, Malformed, but along the way it was stolen by a rebel. Although Psy-Crow wiped out the rebel, the suit fell down to Earth, landing on an Earth Worm. That cosmic twist of fate placed Jim in control of an ultra-high-tech-indestructible-super-space-cyber-suit. Anyway, Earthworm Jim found out that Princess What's-Her-Name had been captured and set out to save her. Meanwhile, there's a bounty on Jimmy and plenty of people are in line to take Queen up on her offer. Now Earthworm Jim must make it to the princess and stay clear of Psy-Crow, the intergalactic bounty hunter, until the final battle with Queen. To accomplish this, you'll have to use every weapon and ability at your disposal to wriggle your way through dozens of original and just plain weird levels.

Earthworm Jim was my jam when I was a teen! It is definitely dated in both art and play style. It is very much a product of the Invader Zim and Ren and Stimpy era. Levels being hard for the sake of being hard, non sequiturs, gross out humor and lots of tongue in cheek! They knew what they were making, who they were making it for and it's a glorious monument to an era that has passed.

EWJ has to be one of the coolest games i ever played, there is nothing like him because you are literally playing a saturday morning cartoon down to the nonsensical cartoony wacky plot.
But what makes EWJ so appealing its not just because its a "playable cartoon" but because of Jim himself, he has to be one of the most strange and downright charming videogame characters i ever saw, his attitude and way of doing things is so unique that most of what i create as characters and other sorts of ideas mostly comes one way or another from him and his game, also i always liked the art of Ten Napel (i know how bad the guy can be ok? i like his art not the person itself) mostly from the game The Neverhood where things are even wackier than Jim and always had Klaymen and Jim as one of my most beloved cartoon videogame characters of all time.

it's funny, games back then were made so stupidly hard because if they were easy, you would complete them in 1 to 3 hours and not bother actually buying, just rent.
but like, with old arcade games, when you play them now, they will include infinite credits ability in some way., there's no "turn off the stupidly intense difficulty preventing you from beating the game in a timely fashion" from 90s console games.

What was so special about it, I have no idea, as from what I've seen for myself after playing it there was only one addition, a new level where Jim had to evade an invincible dinosaur Brutie. Also music was completely absent from the game.

It's worth noting the Sega CD version is probably the best version of the game. There's expanded sections of existing levels and an additional level on top of that. There's also a password system (sadly no actual save system), and some bonus endings depending on difficulty. The music ends up being the best of the three old versions as well.

Discovered this game when I was a kid on the GBA, and at the time it was an amazing game to have on a handheld console. I like it even more today for it's weirdness, especially now that I completed it multiple times and gost past the trauma of Buttvile, but recognize it to be lackluster on the mechanics side since the mechanics are great and varied but not pushed as far as they could have

I remember playing some Earthworm Jim game on the N64 as a kid, but it's a really vague memory. I was playing the original on my Genesis Mini a few days ago, and boy oh boy, I don't know how people beat this game without cheats. Or maybe I'm just bad :P

I really enjoyed the cartoon as a kid with dan castellaneta as the voice of Jim. I was a LITTLE late to it, playing it around the time of the ps2 era, but still really enjoyed it.
I appreciate your opinions of how some of the difficulty is a little bit unfair, and I can agree. Really, the only people who aren't Earthworm Jim fans I can recommend this game to are people who are looking for something distinctly 90s in it's humor and presentation, so the play it score seems more than fair to me.
Great episode, great thoughts and great spreading awareness of the terrible opinions by the creator.

Had no idea about Doug Tennapel's views and that's definitely not anything I agree with either, but it's not the first time I've have to appreciate the art without agreeing with the artist.
I've got a lot of nostalgia for this one. As kids my best friend and I both played this game seperately, renting it from the same game/movie rental store. He played the Genesis one and I played the Super Nintendo version. And now over 25 years later we still enjoy the games and relax with some of the music from them. It was super weird then, and it's super weird now. But I wouldn't have had it any other way.

Dude, great episode overall! I respect your opinion and I agree that this game enters in the "niche" category of rock hard platformers from the 16-bit era. However, I think that the best way to experience this game is playing the Special Edition, available for both the Sega CD and PC. In this version, you kinda get a "completion bonus" for playing on easy and playing on hard. This is a very old game, but I recommend playing for yourself to check what these bonus are about, they are totally worth it in my opinion. (Also, there is an extra level in the Special Edition)
