  • Earthworm Jim, released in 1994, was such a huge success that a sequel was released the following year, and it continued in the footsteps of its predecessor by being ported to a bunch of different platforms! Just like before, each version has its own subtle differences from the rest, so from the Genesis and SNES to MS-DOS and even the Sega Saturn, which one comes out on top? In this episode, Jonathan reviews and goes in depth with every major version of Earthworm Jim 2.

      The Saturn and playstation had worse collision , enemy and bosses doesn't bounce back when shot making the game harder, in the other hand the SNES version has a MSU patch with the Redbook music making it probably the best version to play.

    I'm definitely one of those people that prefer the second game over the first and its honestly one of my favorite platformers of all time now. and I'm actually glad they decided to be so experimental with the gameplay because it at least gives people the option of whether they want a more straight forward platforming experience like with the first game or if they want a platformer with way more variety like in the second game but that's just my opinion and I really love your videos man.

    Much like a Chip Buddy is a French Fries Sandwich, there's a neat kebab close to where I live that sell Shawarmas, which are effectively the kebab version. And they are EQUALLY awesome! Anywho, the long awaited sequel. Gotta say, this is an incredible follow up, I'm amazed I didn't comment earlier. And I found I came back to this and the first episode for comparison differences after streaming the first game for a channel milestone. Might hold off on streaming No. 2, given the certain copyright claims that Moonlight Sonata is sure to throw. Argh, the plight of EWJ2 having such delightful moments accompanied beautifully by the work of Beethoven! Great episode Rex!

    There is also 3 nes versions that are unofficial and here are what they are:
    The first one was by a taiwanese development team known as "Shin-Shin" which were ex-developers from a taiwanese company known as "Sachen" and it only has 4 levels that being "Anything but Tangerines" "Puppy Love (Part 1 only)" "Lorenzo's Soil (No soil at all)" and "Udderly Adducted" but my rom of it does not have lorenzo's soil in it and this port only has 2 guns that being that the "Plasma Gun" obviously and the "Finger Gun" you have to select between weapons to whip due to the nes only having 2 action buttons and this version had passwords and parts of the stages are separated into different levels due to limitations and also there is no snott backpack and also this port was published by yet a other taiwanese developer that being "Ka Sheng".
    The second one was by a taiwanese development team known as "Super Game" which actually is a division of a taiwanese developer that being "Realtec" and this port has 7 levels that being "Anything but Tangerines" "Inflated Head" "Puppy Love Part 1 and 2" "The Ville People" "The Flyin' King" and across we have "Udderly Adducted" and jim can not whip and you have infinite ammo in it and you only have the plasma blaster though you have the snott backpack the physics in this port are very bad with a very awful hurtbox but the music slaps but isn't faithful to the original but interestingly it uses the konami sound engine and it is missing the "Well done" screen and when the game ends it just resets for some reason and also it has no options menu so like your not going to know the controls at first but we are not dumb we know how controls are in nes games and that is what I can say with this port.
    The third one was by a chinese development team known as "Waixing" though this port is known as "Happy Biqi 3 - World Fighter" and I don't know much about it rather than it literally replacing most of the characters with more generic ones and you now play as a boy named "Biqi" and it's just the worst of the worst the music is not the same (Except for puppy love) and the sprites are butt ugly I can't say more of those it just exists though it is the only port to include "See jim run, Run jim run" and that really is all.

    Weird how they cut Lorenzen's Soil from the DOS version, there really is no reason for the level to be missing other than they were crunched for time and programming the sand physics would've taken too long. Either way, it's a shame that one of the best levels in the game was cut, yet all three Puppy Love levels remained intact.

Yeah, Jim 2 is always an iffy case to me because, while I like it, it's nowhere near as fun as the first one to me. I think I described it in my review as "the first game is more fun to play while the second one is more fun to watch" when I got to 2 (was covering both games in that review) due to the improved animation quality and stuff =)

    I love the soundtrack of the 32 bit versions, but something about it feels off gameplay wise. I think it was due to being ported by a different developer. My favorite is the SNES version.

    • @RampagingRex
      @RampagingRex  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There are subtle differences in the 32-bit versions. The buttons are mapped differently by default unless you go into the menu and change them, and Jim's jumps feel slightly floatier. The higher resolution on the Saturn also makes the sprites appear slightly smaller. I'd recommend the DOS version so you'll still have the CD soundtrack, but with Lorenzo's Soil missing, it might be best to just stick with the SNES version.

    It's especially weird that they didn't have the ability to switch weapons in the Genesis version, since... well, other games figured out how to do this without the 6-button controller. Like Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure - lightly tap Start to switch weapons, hold it to pause the game. EWJ2 on the Genesis should've had the same deal.

I hope you will produce a lot of these videos, because I really enjoyed this one. About the game: they did such a wonderful job with the SNES version this time, visually it destroys md version and stands up well against the 32 bit versions: it is probably the best way to enjoy this game, while the first one looked like a poor port.

    Super Nintendo version sucks! It's like you all conspired to praise her. Music on sega is the best, graphics on sega is the best! Just look at Jim in the dog love level, on the sega it's more detailed and sharper animation, and the proportions of the houses on this level are more correct, while on snes the proportions are not logical. On snes, the level in the caecum is not beautiful, there are a lot of crooked sprites, the color palette is boring when on sega the colors are bright, expressive. In the TV show, the presentation itself is better on sege. The second level on snes is completely buggy! He digs the ground incorrectly, the ground is digging in pieces of glitches. The very resolution of the game on snes is several times smaller than on sega. On the level king of the sky on snes, if you fly to the end of the level without a ball, there will be no boss! And the animation itself of the fall of the slug on snes is not complete in both animation and voice acting, and only on sega this moment is complete. On the sega level in the cecum, you can go without bursting a single lamb, on snes it is not possible to do this. You can go to the second level on sega by digging up all the ground on the level, this moment is thought out on sega, not on snes. The continue animation is the best on this one. Before the start of the level, the splash screen in the sega version plays music, but it doesn't. Sega has many unique hidden walkers that are not in the snes version. For example, you knew that the first level on the shoga can be passed in a circle as many times as you like! It's fun, on sega every level is unique and special, every level has a lot of fun, which can't be said about the snes version. The last level on sega is subjectively better. There are more cheat codes on this one. Only the sega version has a shield. The version on sega is generally prettier and exciting, I'm not talking about an erection, but about the emotional excitement that the game on sega causes in children. The version on snes objects is much worse, a pathetic copy of the original version on SEGA GENESIS❤
