Volibear is one of the ten Demi-Gods of Freljord. Freljord is a really old (and cold) region of Runeterra, full of myths and culture. Only 3 of the Demi-Gods are playable at this moment: Volibear, Ornn and Anivia. The culture of Freljord is very rich and similar to nordic ones. For example, there is a tale where Ornn was upset because nobody was strong enough to battle against him, and then he challenged the Earth itself to a duel. During the battle, all the mountains and ravines of Freljord were created. At the end, they tied. There is another tale where Ornn asked the "Sister Seal" (another Demi-God that isn't playable) to cool his house, under a vulcano, using the water of the seas. The Seal moved part of the ocean to the vulcano, but all of them evaporated. Anivia used her powers to condensate the water, creating snow that covered the entire region. These stories are very similar to nordic ones, like the tale where Thor was challenged to drink water from a cup and lift a cat, but the cup had, apparently, infinite salty water and the cat stayed with its feet on the ground, no matter how strong Thor was. In the end, inside the cup was all the water of the sea and the cat was the earth. He drinked water enough to create tides and lifted the cat enough to make the Earth spin.

One interesting thing about this champion is that currently, in-lore, he looks closer to the skin with the skull head and many eyes, while his normal skin is more like what he was in his glory days. His lore version is basically bear-Cthulhu; a half-forgotten war god that corrupts or destroys everything it touches.
Also, I don't want to impose on your champion reaction schedule, if you have one, but have you considered reacting to Jhin's trailer (Mind of the Virtuoso), theme and voice lines? He's a fan favorite, and for a good reason, too!
That is interesting I would have guessed that his normal skin would be his current with others being specials.
As for champion schedules I don’t really have one lol, going to cover Pantheon next week and after that I’ve not decided...guess it’s going to be Jhin then!😁 I’ll check out his voice lines too 👍
@@TheReelSym actually its not that simple, Volibare looks differently acording to who is calling him ... when the Ursine a tribe of Shapeshifters that worships him call him he appears in the skull eyed form, called The Thousand-Pierced Bear because of the swords on his back ... to others he appears in a different form ...
in the far past he wore rune armor, helm and weapon you seen an armored skin, made by his brother demigod Orn until they came into conflict because of human civilization ...
as Voli is all about wiping out all traces of civilization and returning the people to the old savage spirit ....
and some of his new Voice lines hint that we may not know his true form actually only his manifestation, but that is more speculation right now

Riot had a livestream for his reveal globally. This was the recap of it. Volibear, Fiddlesticks and also Pantheon are all old characters. These are their reworks. Riot takes the character concept, keeps what's good, improves what's not and re-releases them with all updated visuals and gameplay. It's also called a VGU (Visual and Gameplay Update). In the past where we had to log in to the game every time there used to be the login screens where a music with an animated background played until you login. Then they updated to auto login so login screens became obsolete. That's why they release champ themes instead. I'm not complaining though, seeing the concept variants becoming the final thing is really satisfying. The bridge scene at the and was from a game mode called ARAM (All Random All Mid) where you get a random champion and fight on that bridge for a quick casual "fun". After his reveal, between May 9-12 there was a chance you saw Volibear coming and smashing the bridge like in the video. At the end of the game we were gifted an emote of him for facing the storm.
The language used in the music is basically something they invented. It's heavily inspired by nordic languages though, so someone who speaks one of those languages might be able to decipher bits and pieces of the lyrics, albeit with a bit of time and effort. There are no official lyrics in that language, but the official english lyrics can be found in the description of that video, I believe.

@Dr Boom I wasn't talking about language he sings in, but about music he makes (as you wrote he makes viking music which isnt true). Also it wouldn't be too impossible to sing in reconstructed proto-germanic since heilung is doing it. Proto-norse, gothic, ammennic should work too.

Here in Sweden (and I suppose in Norway and Denmark as well), you can actually be named Torbjörn. It's basically means Thor-Bear.
That's an originally Norwegian name that became more Icelandic after time. (I believe, not factual, but considering it's common in Iceland and Iceland is an old Norwegian colony it makes sense.)
Fun note. One of volis voice over is "I am the valid, the volibear. My true name is mine alone"
The singer of this song is Einar selvik, also the lead singer of "Wardruna", they also play in the show "Vikings", and the recent AC valhalla trailer! Enjoying your reactions man
I've always loved the shift in tone halfway through the theme. It goes from a calm, epic recitation, to what sounds like a mix between religious ecstasy and utter terror.

You are right he is basically a tank in League and his new design is way better than his old one, btw don't forget to check out pantheon's voice line when you react to him next week :D
Yeah his old one is what I would call the “classic” 😁...space suit Volibear is the one for me.

He is tanky, though I wouldn't call him a true tank. He is more like fat bruiser or juggernaut with a bit mobility. He has high damage, high toughness and some mobility.
This is VGU reworked Volibear. If you saw the old Volibear, he felt weird specially when the story about "The Volibear" was released and featured Sejuani and Udyr as main characters there who are also champions in the game.
The cop skin was there eversince as one of his skins and they are showing here how they also update the splash art and effects for skins.
Fun Fact: The skin with many eyes is the Thousand pierced bear and is the same depiction of Volibear in the story I mentioned above but also similar to Kindred and Fiddlesticks, where they are in Runeterra is seen different like in Noxus, they only believe in wolf as the kindred and so on.
I think Pantheon's theme song is the last one that has the previous concepts of the characters, the others are just songs, but they are good songs, I like Evelynn's login scream (she's a demon like Fiddlesticks) and login scream of Sylas.

hes a tank that does damage, tho one thing they did interesting with his abilities was when he ultimates the Towers near him stop attacking for a few seconds thus is why you see him killing enemies under their towers and attacking under towers. (towers are suppose to normally protect you from things like that)
That’s cool!...makes him even more of a tank champion, high health, defence and suppression.
Where are Volibears Voicelines? He is basicly a god, but almost noone believes in him now, so he started to loose power. He decided to change it and reveal REAL STORM in Freljord.
Volibear was one of the first i covered in this format and i never really thought to add in the voice lines, i did for Fiddlesticks but that was because it was the main reason for watching him in the first pace. Going forward i now have the champion's voices lines in my video due to request. Sorry Volibear....
Volibear's lore actually makes him a Cthulhu-esque figure (which is shown as that one last skin) in some updated stories that came out months before this rework you watched. However, Riot didn't have the balls to follow up on making him something new and interesting, and instead just made a touched up version of his original design, which was literally just a bear in bits of plate, with the Volibear that should have been relegated to a skin. I wouldn't have cared if they hadn't been foreshadowing and laying the groundwork for something new and interesting for a long while, because Volibears new design is very good, it is just so disappointing that Riot reeled back in out of fear. Especially since you wouldn't have to really change his lore with his siblings Ornn and Anivia, which are respectively the ram and the bird in the gameplay footage.
So the antlers and eyes is how Volibear is presented in recent lore, but for some reason he has to stay just a white bear because it is a safer bet at their target audience. He is very fun to play though! His new ultimate disabling towers is pretty cool.
Also this is a nice format, I feel it works well for the way you break things down and analyze them.
Volibear has many forms, so I'm okay with Riots approach on that. Also we all got free skin, after all.
I know this is an old comment but volibear's white bear form is his most common form and his self preferred, the pierced bear is only to appeal to the shape shifting clan that summoned him.
11:51 it is a canonical Volibear too, not like other skins.
