I automatically wash every piece I work on before I start. This not only makes it more enjoyable to work on, but exposes potential issues that might have been covered or disguised with dirt and grime (and chicken manure!). 😉
When I diag an engine the first thing I do is spray 2-stroke fuel into the intake to see if it’ll fire. If it does that already usually eliminates air, compression, timing and spark, leaving only the fuel system if it doesn’t keep running on fuel in the tank. That diag process sidesteps everything you did, a lot faster and certainly much easier. Since 90% of small engine starting issues are fuel related, that diag confirms the usual more often than not. 🔧👍
@@JefferyAshmore Good question! So I can use the same spray bottle for 2 or 4-stroke engines and so it’ll provide a little lubrication whether I spray into the intake or directly into the cylinder via the spark plug hole. Especially if I want to continue spraying to keep the engine running, so it won’t “wash” a cylinder like straight gas or a volatile.
Nicely done. Several years ago I was doing the same thing. Easy fix, clean'em up, and sell for a profit. It has become harder to find the deals of the Covid days, but I keep looking.
I have the The YTH2042 and it cuts my grass real nice. I later purchased a complete burned up unit for 100 dollars from a neighbor whose courage engine caught fire. Only damage was a coil wire and plastic engine covers that were melted through the engine block cooling fins. Everything else was in mint shape. Now I have a complete parts mower for all parts needed when necessary. If I had to replace my machine piece by piece, it would be 10 times more than I paid for the parts machine. You paid $50 dollars for a left front wheel and rim and got a free garden tractor...SCORE!!! Great video, and not a bad gamble that's for sure. See you in the next one.
I have the exact lawnmower, probably the same year also, accept mine is black & says Craftsman & mine has a 25 HP Briggs, but other than that the exact same mower. Good find glad you made out on this one & I hope your theory about the belt slipping is right.
I almost decided to hang on to it for a backup if my zero turn ever had a problem! But it’s hard for me to pass up a good profit lol! Thanks for watching !
Yisser. You got lucky. Several years ago I bought a Murray 46" GT with a 20 HP Briggs for $50. Motor and body were in great shape and the tires were okay. The seller said it ran when stopped but need a starter. It looked like a steal deal. Replaced the battery, starter, carb, plugs, fuel tank, fuel line, rebuilt the deck, all idlers, belts, blades, amp meter, drive pulley on the transaxle, and various springs. That $50 investment kicked my butt. After almost $1,000 in parts I was finally able to cut grass. But that was 13 years ago and it still runs. I've replaced the consumables a couple of times since then but it's been a good machine. It's a 1998 or 99 model and tuff as nails.
In the past 2 years, ive had 2 mowers given to me. One was a 2004 Craftsman GT 5000 ,the engine 25 horsepower Kohler ran, the rest wasn't worth saving. Then I was given a 2004 Yazoo zero turn was told the engine was low on power, and smoked a lot. Wasn't running when I picked it up. The Kohler I put on a 40 inch cut murray, made a very nice improvement. The Yazoo, has a 18 horsepower Briggs V twin. I got it running, but was kind of down on power. Did a cheap valve job and that helped still low on power. (I may have expected too much) so i bought a Z535M john deere. 25 horsepower Briggs. The left transmission is bad, so I just wanted the engine. Im thinking, just part out the rest. Putting the 25 H.P. Briggs on the Yazoo.
That was a great find for you. Ive always likes the way those things look. The hood reminds you of the old japanese cartoon Voltron. Great work geting it going.
You could probably get up to $700 by me in the Chicago area, but the key is that it is has a shine. Whenever I have sold a tractor, it never mattered how well it cut, but rather how "new" it looked. Kind of blows my mind.
Nice save! I have had slipping issues with the transmissions. Usually happens when they get HOT. In fact, I'm changing my trans now. I have no signs of a leak, but the oil in the trans was low, black and thin. Guess I pushed it just a bit to much!
Yeah those Trans axles are a lot of fun working on. i have a MTD rider that I gave to my daughter when she bought her first house. I replaced the carb, fuel lines, fuel filter, 2 tires, all the belts, both spindles and blades, and reworked the trans axle. I did this due to slipping. Problem solved...except i forgot to tell her that there was an oil leak that I didnt have time to get to. Then I delivered it to her house and completly forgot to tell her to check the oil frequently. I got ran out of oil, something broke inside, so she bought a new mower and the MTD is sitting in my backyard waiting for me to aquire a new engine. 17.5 to 20 HP. LOL live and learn!
Lol! Happens to the best of us. I built a custom Ducar 212 for an oval cart. Custom cam, billet rod, etc. Ran it on the stand for about 5 minutes before I realized I never put any oil in it.
I bet it was the seat switch that you connected up. Mine did the same thing I thought it was more, but after watching your video, and you saying the seat switch was disconnected, (💡) same issue with mine. Seat switch 👍👍👍👍👍
Awesome deal for $50! Well done! You know these mowers have parking brakes, right? This eliminates having to hold the brake while you crank it. Oh, and I agree that you did sell it too cheap.
Yes I did! That’s why I pushed the brake pedal down to start it. However I discovered you could also set the parking brake to accomplish the same thing. Thanks for watching !
I have had 2 of these mowers over the years and the first thing I did on both was cut the plastic grass guard off at the 4th rib out from the mower to go through tighter places.

if it aint broke, dont fix it! 50 bucks isnt a risk dude. the deck was worth 200 or more, tires about the same. running motor.... 3-400. no risk at 50 bucks.
The deck is most definitely not worth 200 bucks maybe brand new or completely restored but nobody is gonna pay 200 for 15 year old deck and those tires are probably worth around 200 brand new not used with leaks
to show that try to do these type of things to riding lawnmowers. Here are two clues - if there is a wire going to the seat ( big clue ) and then there is a wire going to hte carb - you have to be sitting on the seat to start - safeby switch - fuel cutoff. If there is wire to seat but no wire to carb - probably still safty switch - but cuts spark.
Would you please identify the pliers used to pry off fuel lines? I suspect it’s the same as those used to remove plastic push pins on interior car panels.
