We diagnose and repair an issue with the starter not turning over the engine properly.
We see people chasing this issue and replacing the starter, battery or solenoid thinking the issue is electrical but still having the issue of the mower sometimes not turning over or turning over slowly
One time it would start but the next time it would not spin. It would get stuck on the compression stroke and hang up there.
The dealer quoted a new camshaft thinking the low speed compression release on it was bad.
The common symptoms of an issue like this will be the engine turning over slowly, the starter hanging up, engine will not turn over or starting slow.
They should have checked this first!
We find the ACTUAL problem from there and repair it so they do not have any further issues.
After repairing this part, we also find the ignition coil (armature-magneto) has gone bad so we replace it also
This is on a John Deere mower Model D130 riding mower with a Briggs & Stratton 40777-0170-G5 engine
We love how well these Briggs & Stratton engine run!

Straight to the point. Best part, no music and no shaky camera. GOOD JOB!
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
@@IndRepairexcelente video.gracias por compartir Tus conocimientos!!! Feliz 2024
Thank you happy new year also!
There's an honest mechanic there and did a good job thank you
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
Best one I've watched in a long time no music and no stupid finger gestures. Very professional
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
It's a fantastic repair and it's explanations at every point along the way along with multiple tests demonstrate his Top notch professionalism. I always enjoy watching his repairs and seeing him go through a logical process to make an accurate repair. The point that he doesn't make which is important for people to understand is the value added nature of an independent repair shop versus the dealership. The prices are normally lower and the mechanics are far far superior. But you gotta find them and they are always not available. Dealerships are normally a problem from both a cost and quality standpoints, in my years of experience. Great job!!! 👍👍👍
I appreciate your note of support. It is people like you who make it enjoyable to continue making videos and helping people. Thank you for being awesome!
Brushes, armature, bad ignition switch.
Check all grounds. Use a bonding brush, best ground.
The best video ive seen on valve adjustment and checking the compression release. Im suspecting the same issues with my 19hp B&S.
I appreciate that. Very common issue on the single cylinder is that the compression release on the camshaft comes apart. May be the issue if the valves do not solve the problem
This is a VERY GOOD video!! I will be referring to this often!! Clear. Concise. Useful. Thanks.
I appreciate that!
Thanks for the time you took to make this video,, I’m a shade tree mechanic as so many others these days with the bidenomics that have taken over peoples finances, so I do what I can , when I can,,, ya know, I’ve dealt with this is before but didn’t realize that valve adjustment made that much difference in the release mechanism!!! You learn something every day right!! I like your style!! Money talks and bullcrap walks !!! Thanks again!!!
First time watcher. Nice job with the diagnosis . no parts changer here . good job.
I appreciate that! Some of the earlier ones are cringe worthy to me but they are getting better. Just trying to help. Thanks for watching!
Just found ur channel recently and I'm loving it. I already know a lot but I'm learning a lot from you too. I like how you don't assume the viewers are educated on the subject at hand you do a great job explaining everything
I appreciate that! Try to help much as we can, some of them are very amateur feeling video but trying to improve upon that. Thanks for watching!
They don't check thoroughly! Nice job!! I work on a lot of generators and they have the same issue. Thanks!
Only takes a couple minutes most time and many are charging $100 plus bench fee here
Great video again. Love how you talk through the whole process with possible solutiions to multiple potential problems. Diagnosing mowers for me has become alot simpler. Keep up the good work.
I am glad to help! Thanks for watching!
Hands down best video explanation I have seen
I really appreciate that!
My tractor was locked up very similar. I reset the valve clearances as mentioned, and now it starts amazing. Thanks for the video. It was a game changer. Now I have no excuse to cut the lawn.
Awesome job! Thanks for your commend and for watching!
@@IndRepair Nice video. I've got an L120 and that is plenty of reason to look forward to mowing the lawn.
@@PageMarker1 Definitely
I’m among the group who ran a twin cylinder on one cylinder for a season before realizing what was going on by accident. Now I know better and check that both are actually firing. Warm up the engine just a little and feel the valve covers. Both should be equally warm.
Great way to know for sure! Thanks for watching and for sharing!
Thank you so much for this. I watched every second of it and figured out my issue. This is high quality instruction. God bless you and keep you around for many years doing what you do!

An excellent video Sir. I have done a lot of work on mowers and I enjoy watching someone who gets to the point. And tries to explain what and why. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience to help others.
When someone brings me a mower and say its not running right and want a tune up. I always include a valve adjustment. I would think any professional shop would do the same.
I appreciate that! You sure would think they would include what is needed!
As always, a ton of usable info. I asked about the diodes last time. Watched on tv so I could see certain things. I’ve been playing with a pressure washer to learn. Pressure relief works soooo good..keeps it at 45 psi. Lol
Nice! Thanks for watching!

My John Deere E170 quit running after 10hrs. The last time I used it, it ran for about twenty feet and never ran again. I replaced the battery and nothing. Unfortunately, it was at the beginning of COVID and it sat for two summers. I contacted John Deere to see if they would cover the warranty and they said it would have to go to a John Deere Dealership to diagnose it the engine had moisture in it and the engine was ruined. This was something I thought was basically impossible since the lawnmower had always been kept in a storage building. Plus this didn't explain why it quit running after 10hrs. Since we were still making payments on it we went ahead and spent $1300.00 for a new engine, so far so good on the new engine.
Wow
Thank you .

Really know your stuff!!! 👍👍👍
I appreciate that
Lot of, hours, tires wore out. Fun watching real mechanic
Thanks for watching!
You are a awesome mechanic..thank you for the honest ones out there
That's kind of you, I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching
You just answered my question near the very end. Dealing with the other plug. If they were both changed out or any carbon buildup. Some places just want to take advantage of the consumer. I've seen way to many valve issues over the years. I hope that shop didn't charge the customer for guessing at the issue instead of actually working toward a solution.
The customer was charged quite a bit for pick up and the estimate. We picked it up at the dealer for them and found these issues
very good video.................
Thank you for watching
Wow! I did not know these engines have pressure release. Perhaps that's why my kohler(s) (15hp 1cyl, 18hp2cyl) are tough to turn / solenoid burns up / needs two battery in parallel to start..
Could be the issue!
I'm not even a professional small engine mechanic and I knew right away that this engine needed a valve job. Some of these so called professionals are NOT worth their weight in salt. 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️😳🤷🏿♂️
I see a lot of people struggle with this issue. I just wish mechanics would fully investigate and use common sense before estimating things to customers. I am not sure how they estimated a bad low speed compression release on the camshaft without checking the valves? I wish we could all be clairvoyant! Thanks for watching!
I own a 2010 26hp. B&S twin, with 2400 hours, runs fine
Maintenance is key
You can even set them at zero lash if you do that then they're less likely to come out of adjustment for longer if you really know what you're doing but again if you set them at zero last you only have to look for the bump on the camshaft whenever it goes according to break down as he speaking of the video
The tighter you go the more chance of predetonation you have
I didn't see the bump at all in this video. I'm used to the bump occurring after the valve closes. Did I miss it?
dude sold me a nice machine real cheap didn't know this
so easily fixed I knew right away what's the trouble
Awesome news!
Just found your channel. I have lawnmowers I work on, but I need to learn more. What is that tester you check with the spark plug I got the one you got pull it off and put in on the spark plug in on the plug and then you’ll see the light but I like that when you got that’s pretty cool I’ve seen one like that before.
We use the Spark Check'r SPC-7200 for the tester. You won't regret that purchase! Thanks for watching!
@@IndRepair thank you 😊
Glad to help!
Great teacher, my starter gear won't engage to the flywheel, the gear just spins in place , why is that?
I see the battery hooked up backwards causing the starter to spin backwards often, otherwise likely a bad starter gear
I’m allway surprised that they been running on one cylinder and didn’t know it 😢
I see so many of them that I expect it and check before I do anything else. Some people just pay 0 attention!
Can you add / edit how to find T.D.C. and which one with #1 cylinder.
I believe finding TDC and valve adjustments were done in the video?
Hey buddy i like your videos, im in the market for a new rider and im really liking the x380 48 inch cut would that be a good choice
Thanks for that. Great machine!
I have a simplicity Broadmoor the key falls out with it in the ignition ignition, and when the key falls out it stays running
Need a new ignition switch
Great videos and so informative! I have a JD X324 Kawasaki engine and it is hard to turn the engine by hand at the top....with or without the spark plugs connected. I dont know much, but am trying to learn. My machine has very rough mid and high power . I first found bad gas and dirty tank. Removed the tank, ran new lines, new siphon line, gas check valve, changed filters, plugs, and replaced fuel pump and carburetor . Took off cylinder covers and set valves to spec....still haven't put them back on and tried to see how it ran. Just ran across this video and heard you say "the engine should turn fairly easy by hand" ...again my mower is hard to turn! Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hard to turn is no good, It could be the PTO clutch bearings are extremely rough. Try taking the clutch off and see if this solves the issue. Check out the drive system while you are there, make sure it moves free
Thanks.. will look into it!
Glad to assist let me know what you find am interested!
Can't figure out how to get the auto choke and throttle set correctly on this one. Starts at cold start then dies and won't start again. Strange and frustrating since it only has 146 hours on it
If you manually keep the choke closed or spray starting fluid when it dies will it stay running?
I had one of these mowers, sold it in 3 years,
Biggest piece of JUNK EVER !
Some companies make some pretty bad stuff anymore
Very informative video with the helpful tips. Great inspection and diagnostic process. Are you up for a collaboration? Hipa supplies parts for small engines and maybe we would work together to help more people in the community.
I appreciate that! I had e-mailed someone before that responded but there seemed to be a lot of coloring inside the lines. I want our content to stay unhindered by any brand associations that could bias our opinion. Thanks for watching and for reaching out!
What is the spark tester u used depot doesn't have it, yellow size of a pencil and appears to have a clamp on it.
Spark check'r SPC-7200
Troy bilt 18.5 same issue, starts one time then struggles but blows a fuse on the next time starting? Compression release does seem good with the intake bump. Bad ground or starter possibly or even the switch? Thanks. I did do valave adjustments 0.04 intake 0.06 exhaust
Bad ground, starter, connection or a short somewhere sounds likely
I'll probably do 0.04 on the exhaust to free up some compression. Starter hangs up on compression
Won't hurt
So every video I see about a Briggs & Stratton that turns slow has the valve adjustment in front. I have an old Montgomery wards 18 hp twin with the carburetor in the front and there is no place to adjust those valves that I can see. The engine turns over well without spark plugs but tends to stop at the same spot which sounds like compression. Do these older Briggs engines have the decompression? Model is 422707.
The opposed twin does not have this low speed compression release (every one I have seen anyway) I would suspect timing off or a stuck valve on first inspection
What is that tool called at 5:00 used to measure the gap? (0.04"-0.06")
Feeler gauge.
Yes sir 45 degree angled feelers these are
Would it be the process with a L110
Yes, just a single cylinder engine instead of the twin. Many times on the single cylinder intek the low speed compression release flies apart on the camshaft
Mines mufflers been cut so i have to fix that to or it'll burn something out without a muffler
Absolutely true, never thought it would happen but people set their lawns on fire
I guess could happen sense this Kohler courage sv725 wiring is all messed up from the person i bought the sst18 from im just gonna run a straight muffler pipe from left to the right side pipe weld that together and weld a muffler on i wonder how long the other person used it without a muffler they just cut off the rectangle part of the muffler and left short pieces on on the engine its enough to weld to I'll have to do a little front weld on each side then unbolt it off the engine to get the other sides welded up
Nice
I've been battling my LA105 for a week now. Won't turn over. Battery is fine, changed the ignition solenoid, nothing, changed the ignition coil, nothing...but after I changed the coil it started for like 10 seconds then stopped and won't turn over. Next step is replacing the carb, then the started, any other ideas?
Check each one by one to find out what your missing or what is bad. If ignition coil was aftermarket it likely will not work right
@@IndRepair Installed new coil and new started solenoid. Seemed to do something, but ran until about a half tank of gas then just died.
Hmm I would go back over everything again had to loose something
@@IndRepair I did. No luck. Wondering if it's the vacuum on the gas cap. I thought I had it solved. thanks
@hu5tle- definitely could be. Did it start back up after?
So, mine is doing the hanging up thing. But when its not doing that it'll just keep turning over and not start. I have checked the fuel system all the way to the carb and i have a good fuel supply to it. Havent removed the carb yet though. But it will start if I give it a little shot of starting fluid and it will keep running. But I definitely don't want to be doing that too many times!
Could the turning over and not starting issue be because of My valves? Or should I clean the carb and then check the valves if it's still doing it?
Thanks for any info you can give me!
Definitely sounds like a carburetor or fuel supply issue
Will clean the carb. Hopefully that fixes my issue! Will be back if that doesn't fix it. Thank you very much for replying!
Right on hope you got it taken care of!
Hey could you post a link where to get the ignition coil tester at.

Have a question i have a older jd Lt 160 with a kohler command 16hp i was told that the valves were self adjusting and they didn't need adjusted doesn't seem right is it true? And was by a jd dealer.
Some engines have hydraulic lifters that eliminate the need
@@IndRepair Thanks for your reply.
What was or is your spark testing tool
It is called Spark Check'r. They used to be sold under Check Spark until the company went bankrupt and was bought out from what I understand. www.rcpw.com/trillium-spc-7200-spark-checkr-engine-spark-tester-ignition-analyzer-for-small-engines-motorcycles-and-more/
How many hours did mower have on it?
Sorry, I am not sure on this one
That engine looks similar to the sv725 Kohler courage mines wiring needs all redone someone done a poopy job on the wiring plus the engine doesn't go to the d100 John deere
Definitely!
@@IndRepair well actually the d100 doesn't go to the sst18 John deere is whatnit is plus the sv725 doesn't
@@IndRepair is what it is i ment to say
On one hand, I find it a little bit weird that you don't know why the dealer quoted would have quoted how they did for that repair. On the other hand, if you don't know, you don't know and there's probably a reason for it (and I dont mean that in a negative way).
So usually the customer will drop a machine off at a dealer and want a service special (different names for it, but a yearly service). The tech discovers an issue that the customer may or may not (usually not) have mentioned. Rather than spend time (because time is money) figuring out exactly what the issue is, they will figure worst case scenario as best they can. In this case, given it's a Briggs and they have a nasty habit of cam failure, they quoted for the cam being replaced. They would have tried adjusting valves first and if that fixed it, half hour labor and everyone moves. If it didnt fix it, they've already quoted for the cam replacement and they can proceed with that without having to get the customer back on the phone and try to explain why the valve adjustment didnt work and so on.
I always try to give both scenarios and what it will cost both ways and let the customer decide. If it's just one of those things that you won't know until you get into it, then I tread lightly with an estimate and get them agree to an hour of labor for me to get into and then go from there.
It can also depend on the service manager/service writer. Sometimes they do a bad job of quoting things.
But again, with it being a Briggs, it's usually a safe bet that the cam has failed. But as easy as a valve adjustment is, I'll squeeze that in and fudge my time a little bit to make sure before I start quoting things. But everyone is different.
I normally give customers the full deal before doing anything. I'm pulling a valve cover before quoting a very expensive repair every time. Four bolts, two minutes and I have real answers. With only 200 hours on the machine, no way I give them the $1,300 quote (what dealer quoted) without further investigation or talking to them about all the possibilities. I know we all have different processes just think anyone worth their salt would have taken the time. Thanks for watching!
I would have replaced both coils
Me also. All we do is estimates for the customer and go with their hearts desire
Can you tell me my land mover star but wen I take off the brake it turn off
Probably seat switch or another safety switch
how can i repair a stx 38 JD mower wheel spindles
Putting new wheel bushings
@@IndRepair it is the spindle itself- no way to get it off
Have the replace the whole front axle. They are still around used new is extremely expensive
@@IndRepair thx
I'm thinking the dealer was just lazy. I hope they weren't trying to soak the customer for a camshaft.
I really hope that is the case also. Unfortunately this is about the 5th time in the last year seeing a similar thing happen from the same place. Thanks for watching!
Most of the jd small engine mechanics don’t know much of anything period, I’ve had a lot of there jobs in shop and I’m disappointed with what they charge and still didn’t fix it, but customer learning now
You can get the same kind of cranking problems if you install a lower CCA battery. Don't ask me how I know... 😭
You know, I don't see this too often but you are absolutely right! We use 350cca battery on everything we replace
You were wrong when you said the decompression relief is on the intake valve it is on the exhaust valve.
Top valve on these is the intake valve. The manual is not correct
Sounds like a coil
No on this one I do not believe

Nagyon szépen köszönöm az infót.
Glad to help!
For a dealer to miss the most basic diag. That is very disappointing! Just saying, the old school guy
Can you please elaborate so the rest of the class understands?
Sometimes nobody understands these places depending on who run them hire the cheapest unskilled labor and only have one actual "mechanic" it is indeed very disappointing!
@@IndRepair For a hard start or no start You must start with the basics Fuel, compression and ignition. A first test would be compression If compression is not to spec, is it losing compression or not making compression. Poor compression would lead to valve lash. Reset valve lash and compression will return. Now to the ignition. Test for proper spark at each plug. In this case only one cylinder was firing. Further trouble shoot each coil, wire, and spark plug. Some simple, not expensive ignition tester proves the issue. Just saying the old school guy.
@@danoakes8680 Absolutely the truth! Takes no time if you know what you are doing. They are charging a diagnostic fee but not doing any actual diagnostics, just guess work. Thanks for watching and for educating!
