    From Wiki- This is a some of the approximately 40,000 caves , which provide an important tourist attraction for the country. There are such a high number due to karstification in the west and central Taurus Mountains. Karst is a topography formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. It is characterized by underground drainage systems with sinkholes and caves. It has also been documented for more weathering-resistant rocks, such as quartzite, given the right conditions. Subterranean drainage may limit surface water, with few to no rivers or lakes. However, in regions where the dissolved bedrock is covered (perhaps by debris) or confined by one or more superimposed non-soluble rock strata, distinctive karst features may occur only at subsurface levels and can be totally missing above ground.
    The study of karst is considered of prime importance in petroleum geology because as much as 50% of the world's hydrocarbon reserves are hosted in porous karst systems.

    So my theory is, this area is instrumental in the development of human civilization. Because of the abundance of easy caves in the area, and hopefully there were more rivers there in the old days with fish, and the mild climate, this area attracted a large number of early humans. And was maybe one of the first bigger population centers. Leading to our early signs of more organized civilization, such as Gobekli and the Anatolian farmers.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably some truth to that, except that Gobekli Tepe is 12,000 years old so probably existed before the civilizations that carved out the caves in Cappadocia. Many of them were created during the Byzantine area, less than 2,000 years ago, although many are much older, such as the temple I showed in the previous video which is apparently 4,000 years old.

    • @saratemp790
      @saratemp790 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GabrielTravelerVideos Okay true, many caves are younger. But I am sure there are a lot of natural caves there, not just there, but in wider areas of Turkey, because the whole of Turkey has many cave areas due to the geology there, that were used by ancient man. And one thing to consider, maybe some of those caves were older, but then recarved out and enlarged more later, once the tools got better. So they appear younger, but aren't.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@saratemp790 Yes, those are all relevant points. As far as I know it's quite unknown when exactly the first people started living in caves there so it's certainly possible that they were there 12,000 years ago or even earlier. Either way it's mind-boggling history.

    • @saratemp790
      @saratemp790 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GabrielTravelerVideos Yes I believe it must have happened earlier. We always hear about 'cave men'. Well, here are the caves. Plus the weather is good. Maybe they have underground water there. This is the place. Or at least one of the main places.
