      you have remember that such sites are all over the place, they have thousands of them, so it's not practical to conserve them all, while the same old remains in Germany or the Netherlands would be quite unique and rare, and kept as treasures, in Turkey or Italy they just have too much of it.

    Not sure if you are headed that way but Kusadasi was pretty great, was there in 2006. Ephesus was incredible. Talk about Mark Antony and Cleopatra walking together on the same streets. Its a great story how an ancient city was found by a couple hikers climbing around the hills.

    I came across your channel almost by chance, I imagine because I have beef researching Turkey and its history. I am fascinated by Turkey, the Turkish people and their incredible history, a history that does not seem to be cared for or preserved. Other countries would be making sure that these sites are preserved as a legacy of a very rich past. Perhaps their religion and economics have something to do with this neglect, I don’t know. In my opinion, they could benefit
    by preserving these Turkish sites for tourism, which at the same time and ironically, will rescue them from the neglect that they are in. Thank you for posting these, I have enjoyed your videos.

      It is a bit sad that this ancient site while it is supervised by the archeological authorities and in fact you pay a ticket to see it, it is not clean enough and has no information signs for visitors. other sites in the same region was much cleaner and you dont need to search google for info about them.

    • @Blackadder75
      @Blackadder75 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to remember that centuries of vagabonds have camped and made fires in those old tombs. the original burials most likely had been plundered 2000 years ago already. So if a damaged column has survived all these centuries it's not very likely that it will suddenly collapse in 2020.

    If you haven't try a Turkish Bath Hamam, you should def try it! It was 35Euro for me, the owner even pick me up/drop me off. I don't know if the price is different for men/women, they will scrub all your death skin cells off your back lol follow by deep massage. I just can't stop giggling during Hamam.
    0.48 on the furthest part of the hills, I can see my Gulet/yacht travel agent office, all the Blue Cruise/Gulet starts here. Also at the end of the pier near the hill, is the ferry office to Rhodes and the custom check point before boarding the ferry. Sweet memories all returning. My hostel is very close to the white mosque, so just 15 min walk across the street, up the hill is the Lycien Tombs. Just before I had to catch my ferry to Rhode, I took a quick walk up the hill for some pictures of the tombs, because the ticket agent actually pick me up on time to the custom/ferry.. I only stayed 2 nights in Fethiye and continue with the rest of my journey. I did the 12 Islands tours, it's so easy to joint any boat tours from the kiosk along the harbor.
    Gabe, I hope you will get to see the turtle hospital by Dalyan river, it's a charity run by a British lady, she's been on other documentary for saving the turtles. It can only be reach by joining a boat tour up the river. I did a lot of research but I run out of time to see it. Are you going north to Marmaris after this? Did you try the Turkish ice cream? it's very thick, it's made with some plants base extract.

    It's quite possible those family tombs contained valuable possessions which have since been looted, including gold coins to pay the ferryman. They may even have been lined with gold. I guess wooden ladders would have been used to provide access to the tombs on the cliff face. They might have had locked heavy doors. Certainly tombs of members of the Greek or Macedonian aristocracy. Possibly, tombs of those soldiers who joined Alexander on his expansion east.

    Hey Gabriel. How did you get around these areas? Did you rent a car? I'm trying to avoid renting a car. Is there a bus or anything that can take me around those areas?

    Gabriel:
    I have watched all your videos and have one question for you: How well do you sleep in all those budget hotels you stay at. I heard you say that the place you were staying at only costs $25 a night. I picture a rock hard bed, lots of street noise, people yelling out in the hall, and a generally uncomfortable setting that would make sleep nearly impossible. How could someone sleep when you move from one budget hotel to the next with the stress of being in a unfamiliar setting and mattress all the time?

      @GabrielTravelerVideos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The room was really nice actually. A little street noise but not bad and the room itself was great. The Turkish lira is weak right now so that makes everything cheaper than it normally would be. I've had four star hotel rooms for $50. I'll show more of my rooms in future videos.

    From 6:15 you see only the flags and perhaps don't think anything special.
    But these flags have a special meaning. This is a symbolic act. All over turkey, young man have to make their military service when they are 18 years old, if you're not studying.
    These are the flags of those young man 18- 25 year old, who were martyrs and will always be known as brave hearts in war for their land and family.
    It's really emotional when a family delivers the message of the martyr of their 20 year old son. For that reason. Remember the next time if you see a flag on an old building with no toilette. This is the homeland of a young man who is martyr. They will always save this beautiful , and historical so meaningful country.
    And on 9:40 you can see that, there people who lived in this region where absolutely independent of any other country.
    Only the ancient hellenistic historians defined them ass greec. But in fact they were lyciens or Ioniens with their own country. By the way homers ilias and Odysseeus has its ancestry in this region of independent people. They never defined themselves as greecs, because they were anatolian

    our happy place 20 odd visits in the past 30 years always having different things to do. Not to sure who would take advice from someone just passing through and not spending the time needed to soak up what the area is about.
