My New 2016 Golf R Intro

  • In this video I talk a little about why I traded my 2015 Autobahn GTI PP 6MT in for a 2016 R DSG/DCC/NAV/DAPR.
    The GTI was an awesome car but I wanted more traction. I also was planning to go Stage III and it really wasn't worth it on the GTI.
    The R feels much more planted and accelerates strong in turns where the GTI would kill the throttle.
    Stay tuned as I upgrade this car!

    Thank-you for your Golf R intro. I am still shopping. Started out looking at the GTI, then the GTI PP, then the Golf R, and then a competitor's car (which I won't mention so I don't hijack your post). I have also wavered back and forth between manual and DCT. Then there is the lane-assist pkge and you sold that. You have answered many of my questions. Much appreciated. Thank-you.

    Enjoyed your video. Much more informative that most. I have the 2015 GTI and was considering upgrading, but....decided against it. From what I've heard and read, the R is not worth it for the average driver like myself. I'm not taking it to the track and 98% of the time wouldn't need the extra traction. It was tempting though... But I'll stick with my GTI for now. It's a great car and I'm really liking the driving dynamic. Probably don't need 300 hp. the final decision came down to the difference in gas milage. I drive 22 miles to and from work every day. My car has to be a practical daily driver/commuter car as well, and the R would take a significant hit on gas.
    But yours looks sharp and I think you made a great choice. Rally like that color too. Congrats.

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Professeur Dufus McPottytush Thanks for the detailed and nice comments. I agree with your reasoning and I think you made the right choice. The GTI is a great daily driver that you can't go wrong with. Not everyone wants or needs more power. I wanted more from it, and after talking to HGP, APR, and IE it was obvious to me that I needed to switch to the R. They all said the MK7 engine could easily put down 450-500HP but to make the application practical I would need the AWD.
      To back up your concerns about fuel economy, I have not been tracking my gas mileage, but I can tell you the gas tank allows two more gallons and yet it seems I am always needing to put more in. The GTI was definitely more fuel efficient.

    • @jojosribshack
      @jojosribshack 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rad Fox Plus, I kinda have a thing for moon roofs. For me, that would be a major loss. I think it might have more to do with weight and balance. Having a huge heavy piece of glass up top might have some effect on the driving dynamics... change the car's center of gravity. not that regular folks like me would think it was a big deal, but it might be an issue for the hard core crowd and purists.
      Fuel econony... yah, makes sense. Weighs several hundred pounds more than the GTI because of the extra drivetrain components to the rear wheels. Plus the extra power. But I guess you don't buy an R for the fuel economy. 450hp is insane! Look forward to checking you out once you get some of the mods done. You seam like a real gearhead. Should work out good for ya

      @RadFox1320  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +irican0710 Are you thinking manual or DSG?
      You know It's sad that we are all trading in our GTI, when it is such a great car, we just want more greatness! All these trade-ins will probably keep the resale low on the GTI, when it does not deserve this, and people will say look at Honda they hold their value better, blah blah blah. You know the Ford Taurus was the best selling car in america, and I used to say, who gives a shit! LOL!

  • @Kamofy

    You probably know this now but you can use vcds to disable ecs and asr completely right? There is also a vcds setting to disable the torque limiter that you described at 2:20. The R also needs vcds to delete esc/aar and torque limiting in 1st and 2nd.

    I had no idea that there were only 4 Fully Loaded Limestone Grey Metallic R's in the US....The second one is in my Driveway as of last Saturday. :-) I had the stereo upgraded this week (low end...I kept the Fender mids and highs) and I'm getting the Stage 1 Apr ECU and new intake and turbo inlet pipe Monday. Stage two will come after 10k miles. Congrats on the new ride!!!

      I bought her in Mandeville LA (I live in New Orleans).
      I had a '13 GTI Autobaun that had a JL W7 Wedge box and a 1000 watt amp that I moved to my R this week. I kept all the mids and highs but unplugged the R's subwoofer. If you upgrade you'll need a professional as integration with an existing system is tricky. The amp, box, woofer and install is about $2k but I love my music and it sounds amazing....you only live once. I had an Apr tune on my previous 2 GTIs and I cant wait until my R is doing all she wants to. I'll put up a video when shes all done.

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey post up a video of that stereo install!
      Did you amp the fender speakers, or do you think they are loud enough?
      I have had several high end systems that were used as demo vehicles at car shows, but I can't justify spending that kind of money anymore, but $2k is reasonable!
      Fosgate and JL all the way!
      YOLO!

    • @eddiemcdonald4461
      @eddiemcdonald4461 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rad Fox I left the mids and highs alone. I did take all but 10% of the bass out of the EQ on the R's stereo so the kids and highs aren't working nearly as hard. Once you take the bass out of them, they get loud while staying clean. I too spent my youth (and a lot of money like you) on whole car systems. But this one, just like my GTI, doesn't need it....And I'll make sure to include the stereo install in my video. Here's a link to the Wedge Box if you're interested.. www.jlaudio.com/ho112r-w7-car-audio-h-o-wedge-subwoofer-systems-93112

    The adaptive cruise control is one of the main things I hate about my GTI annoys the crap out of me. But under heavy de-accel on cruise control the brake lights will light up on they're own as its for safety.

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MechRider89 Can I ask what it does that annoys you? Are you in the US or Canada? I see you have a Talon, I used to have a built up 90 Talon TSI.

    • @MechRider89
      @MechRider89 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm Canadian, we get the same spec GTI's, TSI etc here. The adaptive cruise control annoys my because I'll be coming up on someone or someone will turn in front of me the car will; brake hard in the middle of me changing lanes to just go around them. Sure I'm not used to it yet so that may be the reason but as right now it annoying me to no end.
      Well....I had a Talon TSI AWD until a little over a day ago when she was stolen while I was in the city. Came home to see it gone and glass all over my driveway.....The only good thing is I think I know who did it, just need to find the car and prove it. just put a brand new forged 6 bolt in it plus 1000CC injectors, FP 68HTA, and wil-wood big brake kit.....15k of parts and hard work gone.
      Maybe I should do what you just did, go upgrade to a R line golf.
      Did you like your Talon?

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't think the US 2015 GTI had an ACC option. Damn that is a shame about your Talon. Insurance probably won't cover hardly any of those upgrades. I had a friend who's Eclipse was totaled and he showed all of his receipts for his upgrades and he was able to get some of his money back, and then he bought the car back, stripped it, and built another car. I hope you find who ever took it and can get it back. I really liked my Talon I had it for almost 9 years, which is a long time for me. I had lowered the compression to 8:1, ARP studs, metal head gasket, big 20g, 550 injectors, VPC with GCC, external wastegate, 4 bolt rearend, ACT400 clutch, was running 30psi in the end. When the boost was around 22-25 PSI I was running low 12's at 5000 feet elevation. At 30 PSI I am sure it was in the high 11's. Sold the car to a friend who I think still has it. I sold the car because it was just old and loose compared to most newer sports cars. I went into a supercharged S2000 and was super happy with it.

    • @MechRider89
      @MechRider89 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      My GTI's technically a 2015 as the build dates in December but my dealership got it mid January as a 2016 unit of course.
      But your more then likely right all my mods on my talon wont mean anything to the insurance people, they'll give me as little as possible for my car. If its found then they'll just give me my car back whether its destroyed, falling apart or fine and just be like "here's your car back....enjoy" no pay out for damage or anything. I'm really conflicted tho, I've put a lot of work into that car so I kinda of want it back but at the same time I don't want to have to fix everything again either. If it isn't found in a month then insurance deems it a write off and I'm payed out.
      I totally agree, the 1g's were cheaply built to begin with but age hasn't exactly helped either, its kind of the reason I opted for the GTI over a focus ST or WRX STI. I had a car that was a blast to drive but the interior was not exactly luxurious and accommodating for long road trips, so why get another car that's going to be the same way.
      Are you planning on doing a FMIC on your R? I'm curious to see there the radar unit ends up lol

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree totally with everything you have said about the GTI vs. the other cars. Yes, I will be installing a larger intercooler, but this time I will be swapping the stock one with a thicker aftermarket one. Probably an APR one.

  • @jmsma6234

    Rad Fox.
    Thanks for the walk through. I was fortunate to trade in my 2012 TDI - yes TDI - for a 2016 R Manual DCC - 5 weeks before the Diesel controversy. I bought the car as a daily driver and to track it - hence the manual. My tracks have some sweet twists. I'm looking into an APR Stage 2 after the first year.
    My question is about the monitor. Does your particular car have a performance monitor? In car mode, it gives the VW "think blue" feedback. I noticed in a TH-cam review by Nick Murry on the 2016 GTI PP, he highlighted the performance monitor which shows turbo data. NOT IN THE R. Where else would you expect to see this? I'm hoping that it's as simple as a software update. Is it on your car?
    Thanks.

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Congrats on the new car and I hope you have a lot of fun taking the R to the track. I have checked and I do not have "sport" option in the car menu that turns on the special gauges, like boost, etc... I did a lot of Internet searching on this today and from what I have read there is a special code that the dealer can enter that will enable it but that the code is supposedly different for each car and they have to get the code directly from VW.. If it's a code, we should be able to do it with the VCDS, but someone will have to figure it out.

    Nice review and info in the vid! Great color for your R. BTW, your sales guy is not completely accurate re: the moonroof. I've taken the R out here a couple times for a test drive in Dubai, and the Euro version comes with the moonroof, LED tail lights, opening arm rest, and 19" Prets. So it mos def does come with the moonroof...just not in N. America. :(
    A buddy of mine in Canada bought the '15 GTI and now wish that he sprung for the R.
    I'm on the fence regarding a year old R or buying brand new...This thing is a rocket!

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Christopher Fehr Thanks for the nice comments. It is now obvious that my dealer was completely wrong. I found out yesterday that the moonroof R's are made in the same factory as the US non-moonroof cars, in Wolfsburg. So the only thing I can think of is that its some silly US regulation or safety inspection that VW did not want to bother with. I miss my GTI moonroof, that thing was sexy when it was open and it really helped me to not have to run the AC all of the time. I live in a high desert environment ~5000 ft elevation and during the summer it sits around 100F. I am sure Dubai is hotter but I would guess you have more air there, I will have to go look up the altitude density for Dubai and compare it to here. It really sucks that they did not bring the moonroof to the US. Maybe someone, super qualified, will offer it as a MOD, wouldn't that be funny.
      Regarding new or used, if you can find a nice used one you should be able to save some cash and use it for upgrades. I am assuming that by previous year this means a 2015 MK7 R, right? Can you even find them used over there?

    • @RadFox1320

      I rarely use lock-tight on any screws unless I specifically see factory loch-tight residue on a screw that I remove. I think you have to consider what the screw is doing and how serious an issue it would be if the screw comes loose. I rarely have any issues with screws loosening.

      Sorry to have to disagree, but we get the DSG to smoke the RS. You can spend your time shifting and making excuses as to why a car with 50 less horse power beats you. :-) On top of that I'm tuned so it won't even be a contest, you will have to race with the ST's. You need to do more research on the RS AWD, it always Overheats and it can't handle any more power.

    Thank you for the Great Details. Can you share your opinion/experience on DCC vs non-DCC option? Is the DCC option worth it since the Base car has already came with 3 modes (Normal, Race and Individual) vs DCC Option (2 additional modes: Comfort, Eco)? Thanks.

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +For Li I have only had the car for a week tomorrow so I have yet to figure out all of its nuances. I can tell you that you have to have the DCC system for those settings to actually work. There are really only three settings for the DCC; Comfort, Normal, and Sport (I will shoot a video of this). When the car is in sport mode, the suspension is very firm and you are much more connected with the car, to me its almost like the car feels like its under pressure, like its all pent up, and very precise. In the comfort mode, the ride is noticeably smoother, and feels more relaxed. I drove several hundred miles the first day and left the car in comfort on all of the long straight-aways and it was *very* comfortable. In addition I love these seats I had no leg or back cramps after hours of driving. Having the DCC according to other reviewers makes a huge difference in the handling performance of the car, I have yet to push the car to its limits so I cannot commit. The DCC can make 1000 adjustments per second at each shock to control vehicle row and lean. Take a look at this review jalopnik.com/the-2015-volkswagen-golf-r-is-proof-vw-doesnt-really-ha-1682403610 where the reviewer says the car has noticeable understeer without the DCC system and that it is a must-have.

      +Rad Fox I'm all across the board as far as driving mode. I'd say that I'm 50% in Race manual. 50% everything else. I put in the 034 Motorsport dogbone insert as well and that is a no brainer upgrade. Very little if any additional vibration and over all snappier. The DSG tune is worth every penny, it really refined the car back to how it was before the tune but with more power. I ran without that tune on a stage 1 apr tune for a long time and wow what a difference. I got the CTS downpipe, APR tune and dsg tune as well as the GFB diverter valve and APR intake all at the same time and the car is nuts. LOVE IT!

      +Rad Fox No plans as of yet for stage 3, maybe after a few years. Spending some cash on lightweight wheels this spring as well as some custom vinyl wrapping. I do shift through all of the gears quite often. Its just so dang nice especially after the DSG tune. I would also recommend getting a P3 gauge. The V.I.D.I model is amazing, it tells you just about everything and everyone thinks that it's stock because it looks so clean. I have my bumper, hood, fenders, door cups, mirror caps and rear bumper by the hatch clear bra as well. I LOVE shifting through the gears of the dsg with manual shifting, always flawless.

    what clutch is used in the golf r vs the gti. Do you know if you would need to upgrade the clutch on golf r with stg2 tune?

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +JIMBO SLICE I had not researched anything about the manual R clutch, but I would assume that the R clutch has to be stronger than the GTI's. I took a look on a performance site, and the GTI and R clutch and their part numbers were different.
      I am not sure how long the stock manual clutch will handle a stage 2 tune. In a lot of cases it depends on how you drive it. If you like to do aggressive up shifts and downshifts, it probably won't last long. I would definitely upgrade the clutch. You could do the tune, and then buy the clutch as soon as you can and be ready to put it in when your clutch starts slipping. That is what I did for my GTI.

    • @RadFox1320

      Yes, it has launch control and it is pretty awesome. You need to re-flash the TCU so that you can enable 3 RPM launch options instead of the single factory one. The one tricky thing that you have to do is press the brake pedal really hard to activate the launch control. If you just barley press it like you would during normal driving the launch control will not activate.

    I pretty much did the EXACT same thing as you for the EXACT same reasons. Traded in my GTI PP 2015 to a Golf R 2016 .. to the exact same color too :) I upgraded to Stage 1 + DSG (+ many other little mods here and there) Have you found yourself using launch control on regular basis to make up for that loss of power on the low end?
    I don't think APR and VW limited the torque and power on the low end on purpose. Pretty sure that's just turbo lag and physics....

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never really use launch unless I am at the track. I don't need it. I have found that decreasing the spark gap has added a lot of down low torque. I talked to APR about this and they said I was crazy, but i have done a lot of experimenting with the plugs and gap and it is for real. I can still feel that there is some kind of loss going on when I do a launch. I talked to APR about it and they said that they were not limiting anything. It might just be that what i feel is the AWD switching over to 2WD after the car gets going. Although, my GTI PP also did not pull hard until 3rd gear. Not sure what is going on maybe at some point I should just dig into the ECU myself, not sure its worth the effort. I just think i need to add more power to make up for it. Hey, do you notice any throttle response/acceleration issues at higher speeds up over 60 MPH?

    • @ultramoo
      @ultramoo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never updated my sparkplugs to a lower gap. Seems APR recommend 0.024, what did you set it to? Does this really make that much of a difference? Not noticed any acceleration issues from high speeds though but then again I do most of my accelerations between 20mph to 50mph. I also use PedalBox set to City mode +2 .. totally converts the way the car accelerates, for me much better throttle response.... your not getting clutch slip are you? I think you would have noticed that, eg manual drive to third gear and full throttle from lowest speed possible (while staying in 3rd) if its not smooth you might need to add transmission oil.

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have no clutch slip, it is a tuning issue. That pedal box sounds interesting but it might mask what I am about to talk about. I have thought about trying it out just to see how it affects my issue but haven't pulled the trigger. My 2015 GTI had a really bad acceleration issue that drove me crazy that APR never fixed, then I buy my Golf R and guess what, it had the same tune issue but just not as bad. I have always believed it to be elevation related. I cant tell you how many times I called APR, logged for them, and emailed them about it. We discussed the fact that I had the stock plugs in the GTI but not once did they say, hey maybe you should decrease the gap and see what happens. On the R, I swapped in the IKH24 with the .024 gap and the car ran irregular, they were just too cold, but when I ran them I noticed that sometimes there were moments where the acceleration was AMAZING and the car would slam you in the seat. When I put the stock plugs back in, i left the stock gap and then sort of forgot about it for awhile and was irritated with the acceleration and tried to again work with APR. I had logged many times and never saw more than a few single misfire counts ever, never enough to trip a CEL. Then one day I was bored and was thinking about the erratic acceleration when I had tried the IKH24. So I pulled the stock plugs and regapped them to .024 and the results were instant! Amazing acceleration, super hard shifts (due to the 034 insert actually binding up from the extra torque), absolutely ridiculous if traveling under 60 MPH and then getting on it. But what I found was that this gap also affected acceleration response at higher speeds up over 60 MPH and that it is temperature and DA dependent. After many many regappings and test drives I settled on .021. There is still a response issue up over 60 MPH but I have learned a fairly effective work around. It still pisses me off that supposedly no one else has complained about this issue and yet I have had two brand new cars with APR tunes that have had this issue. I have even called other APR dealers in Colorado (+5000ft just like me) and no customers have complained. I have always tuned by the seat of my pants, without a dyno, I am very sensitive to acceleration differences. The problem that I have found with the APR tunes (at my elevation) is that more and more pedal does not translate into faster and faster acceleration and there are sweet spots in the pedal positions that offer superior acceleration. I am sure there is a simple fix, maybe a little more fuel, maybe a little less aggressive boost, maybe a little less aggressive initial timing, hell I don't know, because I cant adjust the tune myself and APR is so damn secretive and hierarchical that you cant ever talk to anyone that actually will kick out immediate adjustments for you to try. Needless to say, I have been shopping my options for stage 3 and am leaning towards United Motorsports for the tune, just not sure on which turbo yet.

    • @ultramoo
      @ultramoo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems that your sensitivity to detect the differences of the acceleration is much higher than the average person hence why nobody complains (maybe?). So your're quite certain this is a elevation issue? The problem I'm having is inconsistency during acceleration. My 0 to 60 accelerations jump between 4.0 seconds to as high as 5.2 seconds using launch control (Do you notice that problem?). I can't even get the 3.6sec mark which so many have claimed. I've tested in zero elevation and cooler temp, still the same problem. DSG, AWD system, tyres, all good. I'm keen on changing the spark plug gap, will try it on Monday and let you know, i've love to see how this affects the acceleration at higher speeds too.

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I have seen this. For me, when I changed to the IKH24 and I did some 1/4 mile runs, the first run was always the worst. I dont remember the exact 60 mph times, but i could feel it and sure enough the measured times were horrible. The car had crappy and inconsistent acceleration until after multiple full throttle runs, then if the car cooled at all, the inconsistency would come back. Normal city driving, which is very spirited for me, could not generate enough heat to keep those plugs happy, so I went back to the stock plugs. So this sort of makes sense, my air density is lower up here so my engine does not make as much heat thus does not need to run the colder plugs. One thing that APR did mention to me, was that maybe I should try one range hotter just to see what happens. I think I will try this to see if it fixes my part throttle acceleration issue. Using my dynolicious app, my best 0-60mph during the summer was 4.0 seconds, but this was before the inter cooler and with the stock plug gap, not sure if it will be better now but I will probably need to wait till it heats up to try again.
      For you, maybe the stock plugs are to hot and you need to run the IKH24. Have you ever looked at your plugs to see if you can see any metal specs on the insulator or if the metal looks like it is breaking down?
      I am going to post a video as soon as I can record the intro about a problem I had with the coil pack bolts being out of round and eventually stripping out, so be very careful with those bolts.

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ramon Taveras $35k for a GTI sounds too high, I only paid $32.5k for my 2015 GTI Autobahn PP 6MT with lighting package. Don't forget that once you flash the GTI it accelerates like no other. The only problem with the GTI is launching and traction control during launching if you get the PP model.
      The Golf R starts at $36.5k and goes up to ~$43k. If you buy an R, you need to make sure that you at least get the Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) otherwise the handling of the car is sub-par. Then it's either manual or DSG. Then Nav with fender audio. Then to DAP or not.

If both cars are in stock form I would guess that the M3 might be more fun to drive on the track but I am pretty sure the Golf R would beat it. The MK7 Golf R is sort of funny because it is so unassuming and casual about what it does. Check out my drag videos and you might see what I am talking about. No burn outs, no loud exhaust, and it doesn't really look like its moving that fast compared to the other cars yet it passes them and beats them in the quarter mile.
