Unboxing 2017 Volkswagen Golf R - The Best AWD Hot Hatch You Can Buy?

  • For our latest unboxing review we bring you the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R. What's the difference between it and the Golf GTI? The Golf R comes with standard all-wheel drive and even more power. Consider it to be VW's current ultimate hot hatch. That power comes courtesy of a turbocharged inline-four with 292 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, paired to either a six-speed manual or the optional six-speed dual-clutch. Both gearboxes are excellent. Performance? Try 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, 0-100 in 11.7 seconds and a standing quarter-mile time of 13.2 seconds at 106 mph. Impressive numbers indeed, but is the Golf R something you can drive daily? Easily, perhaps all too easily. What we love about hot hatches is that they combine performance and convenience; they can serve as both a track and family car. Even the Golf R's fuel economy is darn decent, coming in at 23/30 mph city/highway. However (and there's always a 'however'), the price tag isn't pretty, especially since at its heart this is still a VW Golf.
Base price for a Golf R, without any options, is $39,580. Our tester came with the $1,100 dual-clutch and a few other items for a grand total of $41,715. Considering the Golf GTI costs nearly $10k less and, aside from AWD, offers almost (but not quite) the same performance, is the Golf R still worth it? That's up for you to decide. Enjoy the review!

How do you review an automobile and not test drive it?

Dear Carbuzz, it has turbo lag, really? Did you hear that from someone else's review? From this video, it doesn't appear you drove it!

I own a 2016 GTI Autobahn w/ Performance Package (6-speed manual), fully loaded except for the Driver Assistance Package (which I didn't want). I drove the Golf R a SHITLOAD of times, and it was well within my budget, but I decided with the GTI in the end and I'm glad I did. The Golf R is an amazing car, but I prefer the looks of the GTI, and the fact that you can't get a sunroof in the Golf R is an absolute dealbreaker for me. Further, the Golf R's power increase really isn't that great over the GTI, and the AWD system in the Golf R makes the car feel MUCH heavier (and my GTI's mechanical limited-slip differential does almost the same thing as the AWD system in terms of handling and poor-weather performance, while saving weight). In the end, the around-$10k premium I would have had to pay for the Golf R wasn't worth it.

      @carbuzzcom  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yeah, your opinions are literally the same as mine, except that I don't own a GTI (or Golf R), and that I wanted to keep the focus on the Golf R (as opposed to the GTI) as much as possible. Where I think the Golf R may be more attractive for some is in the grip and rough weather department, in New England, for example. New England winters are some of the worst things ever and having AWD makes a big difference. That's why Subarus are so popular there. Personally, I'd probably also with the GTI because it's incredible in its own right and the savings can't be denied.

CarBuzz - Unboxing Everyday Cars and Supercars Truth. I get by in my New York winters just fine with a good set of snow tires, and, like I said, I won't buy a car without a sunroof, so the R was not a possibility. Stupid decision by VW to forego that option.

The lack of a sunroof is a deal breaker for me too. I'm hoping the Mk7.5 remedies this when it comes to our shores.

Carbuzz dude, it's sounds crazy but your the only person that actually shows physically getting in the vehicle particularly the passenger side and adjusting the seats. I say this because I want to see if it seems difficult or cumbersome to get in a smaller or sporty cars particularly for my gf who's 5'9 but more on the chunky side. More people should show actually getting in the tester vehicle to get a general idea. Good job buddy.

To combat turbo lag in the Volkswagen R / GTI you utilize the kickback feature. When in drive mode depress the accelerate release then hard depress again. This causes the car to drop down to third gear to maximize its power band in that gear.

I have a 16 Golf R and my girlfriend has a 15 Bmw 328xi. After owning my car for a while now I can't stand driving the BMW. We went on a two day trip and took her car. When we got back I hopped in my car to take for a joyride just to get my fix. 😎
The fatigue I get in the Bmw is annoying and I never noticed it before owning the R. The R is a superb everyday drivers car. I never get fatigued like other cars and I never want to get out. It always feels planted solid no matter what the weather brings. In the pouring rain, you can blast down roads with extreme confidence.

Very nice car!! I have an RS, but I also like the Golf R. Understated (exterior and exhaust note) and quality interior. I believe in the next Gen they will conceal the front radar in the VW badge, getting rid of the obvious looking one below the bumper.

Weird that the prices are so different in Canada. If you build them on the .ca domains, you'll see the Subaru and VW both top out in the high 40's, and the Focus is 52k (with Alberta's lower taxes).

Ivo Bosnjak Yeah the R is probably the most popular of that group in Montreal, lots of them around here in the land of leasing. R is also about $5k more than the loaded gti, making it a no-brainer here.

I got 90% of the R's performance out of a GTI Sport for $26,100 out the door. That's a 14k difference. I couldn't justify the extra $ for something that you really have to push your car to enjoy. Unless you live where you need AWD, you won't notice it daily driving. The power bump would be fun, but I can get a APR tune for $700 that gets me the same power. Nice car and if it was closer in price I would've gone for it, but it's really expensive for a marginal performance boost.

At the price point its not really that type of car. I think the main crowd they were leaning on for the sales of these models are 30+ years old. More subtle and less fast and furious which if you ask me is the main selling point. I don't care for the aggressive looks of the RS and WRX "riced out" styling this is more for your mature driver that doesn't care for standing out so much but likes the performance safety and quality feel of a great German car.

I had a 2012 wrb wrx hatch, had fun with it and went stage 2 along with coilovers and wheels, it was a blast to drive making 296 hp and 315 ftlb tq. Last year i turned it in and got a white mk7r over a new sti and honestly I regret it. Its a superior car to the subaru in every way, and easily the most refined car I have owned which is why I initially went for it. But I find it to be so boring. For a daily its great, but for someone who likes to take a car out for a cruise on a sunny day and turn the radio off and just listen to the sound the car makes it puts me to sleep. Its dead silent other than a fake induction noise which for me is a turn off, if I do buy a catback it doesnt realy sound that great (personal opinion) plus they run near 2k for a nice one. Idk I just cant seem to get into it the way I did with my wrx, or even my 07 civic si before that. It handles great, the grip is great, I drive the hell out of it, there is just something missing for me that has me already looking for something else ..

I like the Golf R but for a +40k price tag for a sport hot hatchback i expect it to atleast look more flashyyy and sporty, i mean even the GTi looks better imo, i dont think this car should look understimated considering it's the top performance Golf.

The R is also cheaper than S3 and its available in manual. No brainer. R all the way for me. But I'm sure people will pay $10k extra for the Audi badge. But seriously why pay that much and get a tiny sedan with cramped back seats and a small trunk. Get a BMW 2 series instead if you hate the hatchback style.

Huh... 41K seems steep for a "Golf", so you would get a "Focus"?? LOL!! Ive been in all 3 and the Golf far and away felt more worthy of a $40 price tag and that seems to be the general consensus of the professional reviewers too. But I certainly can see what you are saying if your talking strictly about all out track performance of the RS. But other than the badass hemi soundtrack or just personal preference for the look, I cant see the Challenger R/T. Either way, you'll have fun testing all 3.
