  • Shout out to Galpin VW, here in SoCal. Took care of the car, really treated me well, I appreciate it.
    Basically my view or impression of the car after a solid month with it. As I mentioned most things are pretty nit picky, but they are the type of things you'd pick up on owning it for some time.
    Mods are: tint, folding mirrors, Euro led tails, paddle shifters

      Thank you, I appreciate it. Its something that bugs me each day, but the pros outweigh the cons for me. I should say everyone is different. My brother remarked yesterday after about 100 miles trip that he loves the seats, they hold you upright and firm... others have commented being felt squeezed.

    Great review, I have a 2015 NAV/DCC in the white as well. A couple of features that I love that might not have noticed yet: Rain sensing and speed sensing wipers, Headlight cleaners, Radio/Nav unit senses hand proximity, Momentary Blinker for changing lanes. Mode Adaptive Exhaust (2 or 4 tips are used depending on Mode). I had a 2013 GTI DE and loved it, but climbing twisty roads is something special in the R. The R is not priced much more than a Loaded 2016 GTI with the PP and is worth the additional cost. I have 9K on mine, I average about 25-26 MPG, and I drive very enthusiastically. I can't recall thinking that GTI had a different turning radius, but I haven't noticed the R is any worse, however I came from a 2500 HD Crew Cab, so anything is better. And the most important thing, My 4 year old loves the car.

    DSG tunes were available for the Mk6 Golfs. I had it installed and as a result rarely use manual mode. You may want to keep an eye out for it on the Mk7. This is after I also purchased a DSG steering wheel and paddle extenders.

    Very nice Scharn. I bought the S3 instead of this car here in Canada. There were none of these available to test drive and would take several months to get. The S3 is very similar and had a moon roof which I wanted. Anyway they are both great cars. Enjoy your ride.

    • @scharnscharnhorst7626
      @scharnscharnhorst7626  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +david dykeman Congrats on the S3. I was very very close to getting one. After 3 months of searching for the Golf... i was getting irritated with the amount of work, and the fact I couldn't even test drive it; yet i could go to almost any audi dealership and have my pick of S3s. I really liked the S3, upgraded interior, sunroof, etc... i just needed a hatch for my life at the moment.

    • @seinsmeld13
      @seinsmeld13 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Scharn S, I preferred a hatch but for a little more cash I bought the S3. I still have my 07 GTI hatch which I love. Anyway...

    I live in Santa Clarita and drove to Corona to Cardinale Way VW and bought mine at MSRP ($41,295). I have the DCC/Nav, Drivers Assistance package and the DSG. By the way you can unlock the center armrest so you can use it. VW locked it in place for some safety reason. What did you pay for the tail lamps and what was required to do it?

I am curious, how did you go about upgrading to the Euro LED lights? They look great! The steering is variable ratio.
    So technically if you turn in a car park and turn the wheel fast it will have smaller lock.
    Or put the steering in race mode.

      +El Antifeca historically speaking the Rs have actually held their value very well. One of the other reasons I decided to pay that extra for the R. I had a chance to get an SRT magnum for few grand more, and settled on the RT instead... looked years later at the resale value; no question i should have gone with the SRT.

    Thanks for review. I'm 4 months into this R-phoria with a LaPiz Blue Manual. I have two questions:
    1. Looking to install the euro taillights. Found them on Deutsche AutoParts for $700. Is there another source? Did you install them yourself?
    2. I recently noticed on a TH-cam review of the 2016 GTI's where the display includes a "performance monitor" not the less than helpful Think Blue monitor. I run the car at a local track, and would like to have the software updated. The dealers mentioned that no updates are currently available. Do you have a performance monitor in your car?
    Thanks.

    • @scharnscharnhorst7626
      @scharnscharnhorst7626  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jm sma I bought mine off ebay with the harness for I think $850-900. I did most of the install myself. Only thing I didn't do was the putting the trim pieces back on as I was going to the shop for APR intake, figured just let them do it. Personally, I'd just pay the shop to do it, let professionals handle it if i was to do it over again.
      No R has the performance monitor... who knows when we'll get an update for that.

    Do you know if the R has the same turning radius as the GTI? I have the 2016 GTI and thought the radius was rather good compared to my old Sentra.

    • @scharnscharnhorst7626
      @scharnscharnhorst7626  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mkygod looked at the vw tech pages and they list them as being identical the GTI and R, 35.8ft. Which is what I felt when I drove the GTI, and the R. As I said in the review, that isn't a horrible turning radius... but it isn't great either, and for how the car drives the rest of the time it just feels like it should have tighter turning radius.

    As a 2004 R32 owner I find your disappointment on turning radius interesting. It's the exact same as my car, which is respectable considering the '16 R's 4.4" longer wheelbase. Also the MK7 R is only 1.2" greater than a 2016 Civic and 4.8" greater than a 2015 STI. I'm curious to which car you're benchmarking against.

    You mention it has -ok- sound, check out the Helix Soundbox, it's a VW accessory 5 channel amp/DSP that is plug and play, subwoofer mounts in spare tire wheel well. Got it it in a new Jetta, made a huge difference with stock non-Fender audio (if yours didn't come with Fender audio)

    • @scharnscharnhorst7626
      @scharnscharnhorst7626  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did the custom sub box on vortex forum; and that is is significantly deeper and harder hitting than than the helix. Given the ease, and expense, was a no brainer. It is a significant difference over stock. If you are a bass-head though a shall mount sub is never going to do it; but for me definitely fills in the bottom end. The fender though in general although clear, the imaging/soundstage isn't great.

    Appreciate your review. I'm surprised by the lack of rear passenger leg room in this iteration - The front seats weren't in the full rear position? The 2 door MkV Golf was very roomy in the rear.

    • @scharnscharnhorst7626
      @scharnscharnhorst7626  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sek101 Its pretty good legroom. I'm 6"3 and although driver's seat wasn't all the way back, its pretty far back. In hindsight I wish I had gotten in on the passenger which would show rear legroom from a more typical front seat position.

    Good video! In regards to the steering, you may have had it in sport mood which stiffens the steering. Switching to Eco mode can lighten the steering therefore feeling like the car is turning more? It may be a placebo thing.

    • @scharnscharnhorst7626
      @scharnscharnhorst7626  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the US it is convenience, normal, and sport. convenience being Eco mode. And no, that doesn't make a difference.

  • @supercooled
    @supercooled 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are you a heavy fella or are all leather seats inherent to creases like yours? As someone who has never owned leather seats before I am curious. For seats that are 5 weeks old, they look like they're a year or two old, imo.
    Love the car though. I'm thinking of trading in my Kia Forte5 for one. Where did you get the folding mirrors? I saw some for $200 on AliExpress but I don't know about the legitimacy of that.

    • @scharnscharnhorst7626
      @scharnscharnhorst7626  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +supercooled got them on ali for $250 or so. Yeah real leather does that. Most manufacturers these days don't use "real" leather. Pros and Cons. Soft leather like this can easily be scratched as well.

    The car has adaptive steering, hence why only 2 turns of the steering wheel lock to lock. Also, the turning radius is slightly worse because it is 4wd. Might be it, if you are used to other rwd cars for example. I find the turning radius excellent in mine though, a lot better than most cars ive driven.

      I know it will downshift for you in manual mode, and I believe it will hold red line. Gotten close but i've never tried it for any extended period of time. DSG takes a little getting used to (understanding how it equates when it should be selecting the next gear ahead, or next gear down), once you get it it is hilariously fun.

      That pretty much eliminates most sports cars other than hatches or an SUV unfortunately...unless my dog would tolerate the trunk area of a vette! Lol. But anyway, golf R looks like a great choice if I can find one without getting slammed with markup

  • @scharnscharnhorst7626

    Quick story: Sister is interested in a new SUV, i'm the car guy of the family so i go doing the dealership crawl looking at different cars; basically a nightmare everyone hates. We finally get to VW, and she likes the tiguan, but its too small (2017 tiguan going to be great!)... on the test drive with the salesman, he gets to me asking what car I have. I say a Golf, "what kind of golf" I reply with, 2016 Golf R, "omg you realize that car is damn supercar?!?!" etc etc etc. Me and the guy go back and forth about the car... my sis who thought I was crazy getting a VW who doesn't know what kind of car the R is was stunned.
    The exact same thing happened to me at the LA autoshow. Everyone crowding around the R, before I know it i'm talking to 10 people about the car and the vw rep. In a way it comes down to top of the line VW, or bottom S audi. Neither is a wrong choice as anyone who gets a chance to experience them knows.

    • @lic2kil007
      @lic2kil007 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Scharn Scharnhorst So what did you sister get? If nothing yet I like the XC60 & 90 for the new power they have. I needed a new small SUV cpl of yrs ago and went with the 2.0 ecoboost Escape just for the +250hp/+250tq. However, since gas is down thinking of trading back up to an SRT8 Grand Cherokee.

    • @scharnscharnhorst7626
      @scharnscharnhorst7626  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +lic2kil007 Driven several SRT8 Jeeps... they are awesome. The new XC90 is quite impressive, but was outside of the price range. Went and saw the fords, they just haven't upgraded the interiors in quite some time. Drove the new explorer, expensive, but once again bland interior, same with the edge. She ended up going with the Jeep Grand Cherokee V6. It is a solid, and popular choice with an impressive interior (when optioned up). Personally I thought the ride quality was meh, no power, and notorious for some electrical problems. I would have waited for the new Tiguan, but wasn't up to me.

      +Mk7R_Chris Thank you. Shocked they had the balls to markup these cars so much... VW pasadena wanted 12k markup!! They don't me that with a straight faced, i almost keeled over laughing. It is a nice car, a very nice car, but it isn't THAT nice. I was very very close to an S3, the money factor wasn't the big deal. It was having a hatch is a bit more practical for me, and the idea of having a top of the line VW, or the baby Audi.

As for how it feels, that was definitely a big concern for me; when i first got to take it for a drive before i bought it I was worried... until i hit the first bump, then pothole; and i realized I felt it, but the chassis and suspension did an amazing job of balancing everything out. It isn't a jarring sensation, you don't feel it in your teeth. At the same time it isn't a luxury cruiser either which would glide over things with nary any feeling. I'd say it is a good compromise.

    • @scharnscharnhorst7626
      @scharnscharnhorst7626  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Corey Grimm was it ask comfortable as a GTI, no. It was definitely a tad harsher. My R has DCC, and even on comfort is more harsh a ride then say a normal GTI. Now the trade off, when i put the R is sport mode, the suspension tuning I find fantastic. It feels glued to the ground, with body roll very limited. Feels much tigher than the GTI. Performance wise the gti is no slouch and definitely has more than enough pep for everyday stuff; only when you get a chance to drive close to the limits does the R really feel different

    • @coreygrimm
      @coreygrimm 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I drove a 2016 R w/DCC this week then jumped into the 2016 GTI w/DCC for same run and best I can say is the R absorbed road bumps much better in all modes. VW Sales guy and I looked over everything and we noticed the R's components are heavier which I think makes the car feel more solid when driving. I think if there was a 7th gear on the R it would be the perfect mix between track and commuter car. Im on the fence between a R and a S3 for my daily commuter.

    • @scharnscharnhorst7626
      @scharnscharnhorst7626  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Corey Grimm 100% agreement about needing a 7th gear. On road trips, cruising at 80mph it is a tad loud, and gas mileage suffers. I went back and forth on the S3 and the R for awhile. Chose the R because a hatch was a bit more practical to me.

      +YM M Definitely turbo lag. To me though it just makes the driving experience more engaging and more fun. I've driven other turbo cars that have WAY more turbo lag, remember this thing gets most of its torque around 1800 to 2000 RPM; so pretty low compared to most turbo cars. It makes it engaging that you have to realize where you are in the RPM band.
      What makes it fun is the pull of the car at about 1800 RPM. It comes on quickly and before you know it you are going faster than you thought. It just flies.

    • @numbereightyseven

      I have Toyota Blade Master: 3.5L 206kW V6, in a front wd Corolla / Auris body. Sure, it's got its limitations, but the acceleration under about 2,500 rpm is as good as in the '16 Golf R that I also just bought. The big engine torque from a fairly blunt basic car, matches the turbo lag in the R.
      Ps. The Blade can only get 0-62 in 6.5 seconds. Obviously the R's party piece happens above 2,500rpm.

      Unfortunately I sold it, and I do miss it a lot. They hold their value so when someone offered me 33k for it with 17k miles... and coupled with the fact I only really drove it on the weekends when I could. The reality is my commute is pretty heavy traffic each day in LA and the R just is not meant for that, and I felt a disservice each time I would subject it to that.
      I went with a Kia stinger gt, which has been a more comfortable cruiser. It is NOT the golf r.

    • @statrap122
      @statrap122 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scharnscharnhorst7626 They definitely hold their value, especially ones with under 50k miles as I am well aware haha. Would you say the stinger is a better commuter than the R and that the R is a better weekend ride/ better overall sports car? Just curious on your thoughts.

    • @scharnscharnhorst7626
      @scharnscharnhorst7626  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@statrap122 yes absolutely. The stinger will eat miles up like it is nothing. V6 has plenty of punch around town and at speed. The 8 speed is very smooth, which is great in traffic, and coupled with adaptive cruise you basically can set and forget. However, I have some of the best canyon driving around me where Porsche everyone takes their cars and the stinger is nowhere near the R there. More body roll which is expected, no dsg which you feel, and especially in undulating corners the stinger becomes... hard to describe but loose. So you don’t carry the same confidence.

      +Ray Custodio I had read that before. I bought the car knowing everything about it, including that it did not come with a spare. What is odd is mine came with kit/can of compressed air, which isn't filled with sealant (at least not any where on the bottle or kit). Sure that it would work in a pinch, with a small hole for a short distance. Either way that commute happens to be in a first world country, in one of the most densely populated regions on earth... Though i'm sure a spare could always be added if purchased separately and with some minor modifications. But hey I would opt 3rd party roadside assistance package; probably get 3 years at least of coverage for the cost of one spare.

    I ran into this video from related reviews and I gotta say with budget still playing a role, it'll be a tough call between a GTI vs a Golf R after my 2016 GLI's lease ends in 32 months. I'm trying to keep my monthly payments low but I'd like to buy off a vehicle at the end of the term. I can already predict that NOBODY will lease a Golf R without reaching Audi A5 territory vs the GTI which is more reasonable but you miss the 4Motion and extra tech the R carries with only $5-7k extra.
    I got my GLI from Prestige in Burbank who in turn, got a great rate from Neftin VW in Thousand Oaks. Because this is my first car and I've only had 6 revolving lines of credit (credit cards, 3 with 0 balance), they (the dealership and my broker) MADE sure I got the car after VW Credit was busting our balls.
    I'm mostly in the cesspool that is East Hollywood. I'll only take my car out and open it up on the weekends.. Sooooo...maybe a GTI would work out better for me?
    I plan on moving to Canyon Country in 5-7 years which was why I wanted the R if possible. Any opinions/advice for a young man saving for a house and studying/working full time at 24?

      To me its the GTI and it isn't even that close. With the GTI you will likely save some money on insurance, it gets significantly better gas mileage, and you will get a better deal on one; BUT it also gives you 90 to 95% the same experience.
      You really have to drive at the limits to feel the difference between them.
