2016 Golf R MK7 First Oil Change After Break-In

  • I have about 3,200 miles of hard driving on my Golf R so I decided to do the oil change. I choose Motul Specific oil and bought a service kit from www.ecstuning.com . I had a little bit of metal debris in the oil but it was actually very little compared to what I expected. Now that I have the oil changed I can focus on my next upgrades!
    I wanted to note that, I think it's very important to keep the oil changed at an earlier interval than the factory spec if you have a tune and or if you are running an aftermarket air intake that uses any type of filter other than paper.

    Now that was a perfect video for me for my first 2016 Golf R oil change. I purchased pucks to lift the car up on the jack points and saw you did not lift from the side seams and I got ramps. I'm alone and will not drive up on them, but will lift the car up with floor jacks and yes use my new lift puck and place the drive on ramps under the front wheels and of course chocks behind the rear wheels. Thanks!

    Just wanted to give my 2 cents on these cartridge filters. When you unscrew the cap and pull the cup; it's not pushing down on the flow-back valve thingy anymore. So whatever amount is in there will drain to the pan immediately. It's the same on Volvo and every other brand using this type of setup. Not a bad location for a filter, best place I've ever seen to date.
    The tech you had sounds like a nincompoop with Parkinson to spill like that. A ratchet to the face is in order!

    Hey guys I just stumbled across this video. Great video by the way very informative and easy steps to follow. One thing i wanted to touch on is that I've seen in other oil change videos that they always start the car then check the dipstick level.. of course it's going to be LOW after starting the engine as the engine will have pulled oil through the engine making the dipstick level read LOW.
    Would it not make sense to take car off the jack stands and top up the oil level when on flat ground and have it perfect on the dipstick the your good to go

When you flash to stage 2 you are going to love 3rd gear in that car, you probably already do. When you shift into 3rd the car is an absolute rocket! It pulls so damn hard. Hell if you go Stage 3 with the IS38 turbo you will be in heaven!

      +Rad Fox my car only has about 300 miles on it right now so I'm gonna wait and save up to put a new clutch before I tune it. I saw your clutch install video. would you recommend me getting it installed or doing it myself?

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      WHENZLUNCH ya, you know what's up. A clutch is a lot of work on a FWD car especially if you do it on jack stands. lol!. Once you have done one you have done them all. If you have never done one before you might want to have someone who's done one before be there to help you. The clutch is a pricey mod. If you have to pay for installation it gets worse. I bought the RSR for $1000, but there are stronger more expensive ones out there. My dealer wanted about $800 for the install. I have heard of shops doing it for $500. For me, I was like hell no! $800 is a lot of fun money.
      People like the feel of the RSR, because it is almost like stock except the engagement point moved to right off the floor. Everyone who drove my car will stall it on take off. Lol! My stock clutch was holding pretty good with stage 2 but I would never downshift for engine braking and I had figured out a very quick engagement during launch. Then I let someone else drive my car while I was out of town and they took it to the dealer to get a flat fixed and then I came back and the clutch was instantly slipping on moderate acceleration. If you baby the stock clutch it might hold for some time, but if you want to get on it, and shift up and down through the gears you need a stronger clutch for sure.

      +Rad Fox I made an appointment a week of head of time and told them I need a loaner/rental car so I can get to work the lady was ok sounds good... Oh, you don't need to change your oil till 10,000 miles. I was like I know just want to change it as the engine is now broken in etc... The day before I was supposed to drop it off she calls to remind me and I ask did you get me a loaner/rental.... Oh, I called everywhere and no cars are available. (Wtf I was pissed!!!) the went on to say I don't need to change my oil and wanted to know if I was still coming in. I told her I would like to as I was going out of town and wanted to change it before I left town!!! Anyways I called back after I got off work to drop it off and no car was available. Told her to fuck it I'll do it myself and hung up. The lady was so dumb and couldn't figure it out. Ordered the motar kit from ecs and changed it at 3000 instead of 2000. Lol that's my rant...

    Good advice Rad. I changed mine at 1200 but in super OCD. I normally go about 4,000 on motul 8100 or motul X clean 8100. I really want to run that Motul 300v but unless you buy 10 or more 2liter bottles it's way too expensive. It's still a lot even then.

      +Meat Amigo Damn, you are a connoisseur of fine oils! Hey, do really think that the 8100 is better than Specific for a VW? Isn't 300v really meant for motorcycles with wet clutches?

    • @meatamigo3428
      @meatamigo3428 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rad Fox Hey Rad I got that 11 today at the drag strip (11.977). I'll put up a video I made but some of the runs didn't record. Unfortunately I didn't have anyone with me to record from the outside but at least I got some in-car.
      As far as the motul I always ran the 8100 before I knew there was a specific. As much as I'd like to run the 300v I can't see the justification unless I get the Big turbo. If I could afford to I would run it always since it is a much better oiling ester based or whatever that is. Supposedly much less friction. Comes out to a bit over twice the price of 8100 for an oil change.

    Good video RadFox. Your weather seems more forgiving about going under the car where you live. Winter has lost its mind up here in Toronto Canada. Since you like to wrench, consider this oil funnel, I bought it the second I saw it. www.turnermotorsport.com/p-2795-oil-filler-funnel-tool-for-bmw-vw-audi-mercedes/ Another tip if you like, coming from the guy who must change oil in sub zero temps, buy a Pela 6000 oil extractor, it pulls the oil through the oil dipstick pipe using a manual extraction pump, you can also then pull all the oil from the oil filter housing which holds a few hundred milliliters due to a check valve near the oil pan sump. I have completed at least 20 successful oil changes this way pulling out more oil then gravity drain. Saves you going under car to remove the bottom engine cover. Good luck and continue the cool informative videos. I need to keep working on the wife that her next car is just like yours ...R...

    nice video! today im changing the oil for my golf r line 2016 i use castrol 5W30 long life oil... is it motul a bettery option??

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Castrol Edge Profession OE, is the factory oil. Here is a link at ECS for it, www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-Golf_VII_R--2.0T_Gen3/Engine/Oil_Service/ES2776767/
      I am not sure how the long life compares to it.
      As long as the oil you select meets the VW spec(s) then you should be good.
      I choose the Motul Specific, just because I think Motul has some really good oil and the 'Specific' was specifically created for VW engines. Since they made it specifically for my car, and took the time to go directly to VW to specifically find out what VW's needed I think/hope I can trust it. Motul has a couple more oils that are probably even better, one that is a lot more expensive, but some say is the best oil there is, Motul 300V, I would need to do some more research before I try it.
      When I do my next oil change, I'll be able to take a look at the oil again and see how well it has been holing up.

  • @DerSpanier86
    @DerSpanier86 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    is itnormal to change the oil only with 3200 miles or well that is 5150 km ...? better for the golf r? and another question please, what's the "average temperature" so to speak... of your oil while hard driving ??

    • @RadFox1320
      @RadFox1320  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I changed the oil early just to get a look at it. When the engine is breaking in, little pieces of the bearings will wear off into the oil. Since I had tuned the engine early and had been driving the car pretty hard I wanted to see if there were any signs of excessive wear (too much metal in the oil), there wasn't excessive metal so I feel confident that my bearings are good and that the engine has broken in correctly.
      If you are tuned and running a CAI, you should consider changing the oil every 5-10k miles. If you are stock, you could wait longer.
      I have never noticed my oil ever going over 212 degrees. We could check my drag videos and see if it ever goes any higher.

    • @mariodr1067
      @mariodr1067 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      212 degrees even when pushing it? I have a cupra 290 with the same engine as the Golf R, and mine goes up to 225-230 degrees, mind you I live in a really hot city.
