Just a note for when you do decide to react to the Italian doc., it’s very long, so be prepared to pause A LOT… the person commenting in Italian speaks very fast! It took me over an hour just to get through it, but it’s definitely worth it! There is a lot to read (translations and actual clips of articles). Take your time on this one… no need to apologize for the pausing and/or swearing (we’ve all done it!)… We ARMYs completely understand!!! 💜💜💜

The Italian army version shows how the families from sewol and Liverpool tradgedies met and supported each other. If you can't react to it, you should still watch in your own time. It goes into much more depth and has actual footage and interviews

This is such a beautiful song. It has a special place in ARMY's hearts. BTW Jungkook was not on the ferry. He is just representing a survivor in the MV story.

  • @robwebnoid5763
    @robwebnoid5763 2 ปีที่แล้ว +63

As a few others have commented, Jungkook was not an actual survivor. The video should have been worded a little better, such as "Here, Jungkook also REPRESENTS a survivor, thinking about his lost friends solemnly, seen here in a fictional scene riding on a train."

    • @Bolachas25
      @Bolachas25 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

To be fair, it did state at the beginning that the boys were representing survivors in the mv.

    • @robwebnoid5763
      @robwebnoid5763 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Bolachas25 ... True, but sometimes that info gets lost over a short time, aka short-term memory, such as what happened here with Lee, since he is seeing this documentary for the first time, as well as reading about this tragedy for the first time. It is plausible that JK could have been a survivor since he is around the same age as those student victims as Lee does not know all the history of BTS yet.

The carousel in the MV has the words "You never walk alone" on it. In 2016 Hillsborough families met with relatives of the Sewol victims to share their knowledge on how to get to the truth.

#YNWA : Liverpool paid tribute to this tragedy. As a Liverpool-supporter it’s two tragedy cover ups that comes to mind…
The members are not actually survivors, but they just portray it in the video. Still very emotional, and I believe it really means a lot for them to emphasise with the victims. It doesn’t matter that you misunderstood that, the point and feelings are the same!

oh yes!! and they visited survivors to provide mental support, and there were no publications that year (2014). After this MV came out, the families of the victims and survivors shared stories about the precious attention of BTS and the company at that time. because of the high risk at that time if anyone found out who was on the victim's side...

Spring Day is the queen of all BTS songs. This song has been in the Korean chart since released and during spring it would goes up the chart. This is the breavest and controversial song of BTS. I love how BTS uses their music to raise and spread awareness to issues. This makes me admire and respect them more ti the highest and full level. See how brilliant their mind works? In the Italian channel it has a very detailed explanation but at the same time heart breaking to watch. Though they never really admitted direcrly that this song is in referenced to that tragedy. Jin (the oldest) has admitted that this is about an "event" but did not really mentioned anything other than that. BTS even reached out and donated to the victim's families. This song is a beautiful song ans tribute that can be passed on to generations to generations. Salute to BTS!!! 💜💜💜

  • @shweta7796
    @shweta7796 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

The song is written mainly by RM and Suga. But it was written for the friends they miss or left behind. It has nothing to do with sewol ferry tragedy.
However the music video is. The music video director did make it about the tragedy as you can see in the explanation.
If you see a live performance of spring day at Melon Music Awards 2017, you’ll see that BTS actually did tribute it to the victims and survivors of the tragedy.💜

I know many ARMY will explain even more about the MV for Spring Day. But I would like to say this, so many artists came under literal scrutiny by the government, all but silenced of their criticism. But BTS went forward and wrote Spring Day, gave it this MV, and did so in such a beautiful, subtle way. There is a reason we call her Queen Spring Day. She had yet to leave Korea's largest music chart's top 100. And she is notorious for sneaking up the chart when new releases hit. It is an extremely important song to all of South Korea and globally. 💜💜

As a Korean mom with 2 kids, I felt very guilty....The young victims just looked like my kids.
I never forget the tragic scene... the students confused with fear turned back their seat after hearing the anouncement(keep your seat). Some students tied together not to separate from each other.
Imagine the graduation ceremony without 250 students and 11 teachers.

None of the members were apart of the tragedy. The song spring day isn’t for the tragedy but for all tragedies. The music video however definitely is a tribute! The families of this attack also visited the Liverpool attack families. BTS released this song and music video during a time where artist were being blacklisted by the president at the time for speaking up. BTS spoke up because they knew how unfair and unjust it was. This song has never left the charts in Korea and in a way this shows that the people who lost their lives will never leave Korea’s hearts.

Even in the fun songs and movie videos every word, every frame, every item in a scene is not wasted... it all has meaning. You notice when the mv starts before Big Hit Music is displayed it says music for healing... check it out. Wait till you watch the DNA video, watch the explanation first. BTS also recorded a song You'll never walk alone... they reference other songs in their video... it pulls an album together connecting the dots. Genius, RM thinks this way very poetic. This is why they stand out more than any other kpop group or any other boy band in the world, they made up their mind to encourage, and help heal their listeners. They don't waste words. Dynamite, Butter, and Permission to Dance were given to ARMY during the pandemic to encourage them/us, and they did. BTS references Snow, Snow Flakes, Crystal Snow a lot in their songs. I personally love Crystal Snow live - Army is the crystal snow. Give it a listen.

Pls remember the song itself RM and Suga wrote about loosing a friend, so expressing their feelings of loss…
The MV is theorized (but with a lot of evidence that we know) to be about the tragedy.
So the song itself you can interpret however one would like and doesn’t need to be about the tragedy. The music video though is most likely connected to the tragedy.

This is why BTS has a fandom the size & heart of ARMY. This is why the US president invited them to the WH. They THINK. They FEEL. They’re are the voices a lot of us thought would never be heard. They are more than just their music and performances - they are the hope for a better future where instead of carrying around things our ancestors did, we learn and grow from it instead. To me, they don’t feel like celebrities, they’re friends. Brothers that want peace, love and equality. They want a world where kids aren’t left afloat while the adults decide on things that only benefit them and not the following generations. I had almost entirely lost my faith in humanity, I felt bad for bringing my daughter into the dumpster fire this planet currently is, but then BTS & ARMY came into my life and now I see that there is a glimmer of hope.

There are many things the Italian Army explanation adds to the explanation here as well as taking a somewhat different tack on the meaning of certain video elements. I think taken together they make a rather strong analysis of video aspects, exposing the likely meaning of the mv. I think If viewed for no other reason, the Italian Army explanation adds emotional punch and real-world context. It uses powerful actual video footage from the event and from the aftermath connecting it to the mv relatively seamlessly. Watching it allows one to realize the level of genius that went into the mv's construction and messaging.

I understand how hard it must have been to edit and post this, but you have helped keep the memory of Sewol alive and maybe others who do not know of it will learn of the tragedy. I feel that you have reacted to this song with such respect and understanding that I want to share with you a comment to another reactor from a survivor of the Sewol disaster..
I would like you to hear from him just how BTS has healed him through this song and the messages they have: His name is Chilo Abellon - and this is his public comment in full - unedited - from 6 months ago..........
"I remembered when they rescuing us its so tragic when you see your classmates/friends stuck asking and hearing them scream for help, the screaming and voices of people asking for help while the ships is sinking the scream slowly vanished. When you can’t help them because the water got deeper and deeper while they rescue us slowly. The time that i got rescued only 3 of us survived, my two classmates and i in our and my other classmates stuck in the ships hoping they’re still alive but when the time i heard the news that they’re all gone. It slowly sinking in that all my friends and the other class are gone and will never comeback. I feel guilty when I survived, I’m thinking am i lucky? Or is it not right that i was alive and not them? Do i deserve to live?.
Feeling depressed, having suicidal thoughts, every night you can’t sleep because i keep hearing those scream a scream people needing a help but you can’t because your weak and got broken bones. Everything time I struggled to see what life is all about, thinking what if all of my friends survived and they with me survived. It would be dream to see that happening. I struggled to make a good life that i can be proud of because of that incident happened but when i found out about BTS my life changed me because of their music they changed my life the way that i can be proud of and I started loving myself by little by little and finally the day I realize life is so short and the incident happened 7years ago impacted my life to be a better person and all of our hardships are just a big task for us to make them done and the outcome will be 100times better the incident happened 7years ago thought me so many things.
The biggest one is don’t forget they might be gone but don’t forget them put them on your heart and like life all of your hardship and your mistakes will not lose or fail you it’s always a win win situation because we always learn from them. Spring day is my number 1 fav song of BTS because I reminisce the things happened 7years ago while watching the mv and it always help me to keep going in life and do not give up on things that i want to achieve
    - My name is Chilo one of the survivors of the sewol ferry incident."
I truly hope he does not mind me passing on his public comment - but this best shows the power of BTS message.
Some more information about Spring Day:
    1) RM & SUGA started writing the lyrics for this song after a long conversation they had that was sort of a bonding experience for them too. They were speaking about friends each one of them had lost contact with, for different circumstances, and about how much they missed them... How they missed when their lives were more simple, when friendships were more innocent, pure and uncomplicated. For example, they lost contact with childhood friends when they moved to Seoul to become artists; later on they felt betrayed by other friends who criticised their decision of becoming an idol group; they also hadn't been able to see certain current friends in a long time, due to their life-style of constant traveling, etc. (It is also speculated that Suga's rap verse is about the same ex-friend that he speaks about in the last track of his mixtape D-2, song called "Dear My Friend".)
    2) Spring Day music production took a long time to finish. Something didn't seem to be working out, and it was finally finished when a foreign producer got involved in the track. This song had many many edits. (Even more than usual.) V also showed us an snippet of the demo of his own version that he submitted during Spring Day writing process. (I think RM's demo was the one that was selected though.)
    3) When Spring Day was released, as one of the few additional tracks in the repackage album called "We Never Walk Alone", the song became a huge hit in Korea. It has remained on the Korean charts for years. From it's debut on 2017 to the current date, it has never dropped from the top hot 100 there. (I don't remember if Gaon or Melon charts.) Admittedly, ballads are a very popular music genre in Korea, but... The main reason for this local success was because many people found comfort on it, specially the familles of people who had passed away, due to illness or accidents or suicide. The song is about losing and missing loved ones... So the people related it to the feeling of longing for those who aren't here anymore.
    4) It was reported, many years later, that BTS and some crew from Big Hit, made anonymous donations to the families who lost their kids during the Sewol Ferry accident, and even visited some of their homes to give their condolences. This was earlier in their career, by the way.
    5) ARMY's nickname for this song are "The Eternal Queen" and "Queen Spring Day". There are many running jokes about how this single is competitive and how it stubbornly comes running to rise higher again in the music charts, every single time BTS releases a new title track or single.
    6) The mountain of clothes in which BTS members are sitting towards the end of the video, is a clear imitation or reference to the art installation called "Personnes" (People) or, alternatively, “No Man's Land,” a work by the French artist Christian Boltanski, that was installed at the Park Avenue Armory in 2010. That project was meant to make the public reflect about life and death, about the arbitrariness of death and survival. The mountain of clothes can be seen as a representation of the lives that were lost or that are struggling to survive. His work in general has recurrent topics in relation to preserving the memory of people.
If ARMYs remember some facts more accurately than me, feel free to correct me on the comments. You can add information too. :)
    - The ferry was carrying more than three times the weight it was originally designed for to make extra money per trip. Most of the illegal modifications placed the weight at the top and when it shifted it made the ferry tip over.
    - It wasn't the usual captain that day. He had raised concerns about the safety onboard and had been removed for it.
    - The captain on the day is currently serving 36 years for murder and several crew members were convicted of murder, negligence, violating marine laws, etc. (This is all from the very detailed and graphic Wikipedia page on the tragedy)
    - While it's true that the song wasn't written about the Sewol tragedy, the video, album cover and title definitely refer to it.
    - Recently in Esquire interview Jin was asked about Spring Day. Quote from the article:
Fair enough, but there is an undeniable allusion, in both the song’s video and its cover concept, to a specific incident in recent South Korean history. “Spring Day” was released just a few years after the sinking of the Sewol ferry, one of the country’s biggest maritime disasters, in which a poorly inspected, overloaded ferry toppled in a sharp right turn. Hundreds of high school students drowned, having obeyed orders to stay in their cabins as the boat was going down. According to some reports, the South Korean government actively tried to silence entertainers who spoke out against it, with the Korean Ministry of Education fully banning the tragedy’s commemorative yellow ribbons in schools. I ask whether it was about a specific sad event, and Jin tells me, “It is about a sad event, as you said, but it is also about longing.” The song kept the disaster front of mind for young Koreans and for the media, indirectly leading to the impeachment and removal of then president Park Geun-hye
I always say... You can argue about their talent, their sound, their image, you can claim that other groups and artists are "better", but you can't take away who BTS are as people and what they have done for others. Even if their music wasn't for me, I couldn't ever hate them knowing how good people they are. Spring Day is only one of the many reasons why I have so much respect for these men: songs like Baepsae, Am I Wrong, N.O, Strange, even their debut No More Dream; their Love Myself campaign, their donations to charity, their support for BLM and SAH, them constantly encouraging the younger generation to take action and to speak up, them delivering comfort and hope... There's just so much more to them than "just the music". They stand for something. They've always had a message to spread. And ARMY, with all its flaws and apparent "toxicity", has become much more than just a fandom of a boy band.
So whenever I see someone talk shit about the boys, I just assume they either don't know anything about them and what they've done, or they're just generally not good people. Because how could you possibly hate someone with such a good heart who only spreads positivity.

BTS songs have very deep meanings that’s why Army’s encourage people to have cc’s up to see the lyrics. And that is also the reasons why Army’s get a little upset when new content creators dismiss BTS as just another bop boy band. Thank you for reaction again. 💜

While this explanation is excellent, the Italian ARMY version gives you more information about the actual ferry disaster. It also explains the the ties to the Liverpool disaster. Even if you don't do an official reaction, you might want to watch that explanation too.
Fair warning: you will need to pause a lot on that one. There are English subtitles for the narration, as well as for the news clips that are included, so there are two narrations going on at several points. Also, it really tugs at your heart strings.

This is one of bts must songs. It is also known as the Queen Spring Day because ever since it was released it hasn't left the charts. Not only because of the amazing tribute they pay to the victims of the tragedy but also for the courage and determination the boys had to do such song. After the tragedy, the government black listed reporters, journalists, artistis and pretty much everyone that tried to show or tell the truth. At this point, bts wasn't as influential as they are now, they didn't care and made spring day because they always have fought for justice and truth, even though they knew they were in danger of being black listed as well.
I am sure other armys already told you about the italian army analysis, it is a thorough recollection of the events and how each scene of the MV relates to it; it is quite heavy and emotional, but worth it. It is an excellent way to appreciate how beautifully the music video is made and it also allows you to see all the details and references that were used to tell the story in such an artistic way.
Staning an artist that actually gives a damn about people is one of the many reason why bts is where it is now, the love, the positive energy, the willingness to even risk their careers to speak against injustice is simply unbelievable.
As a final thought, one of the reasons this song and MV are so precious is because, as usual in bts music, it does talk about sad and hurtful things but ends up with hope and an invitation to army and the rest of the world to keep moving forward, together against injustice.
    #YouNeverWalkAlone 💜💜💜
It is lovely to see you walk through the bts rabbit hole. Tons of love ❤️

As a fellow Liverpool supporter (shit weekend btw), seeing the connection between the Sewol family members and the Hillsborough survivors was really interesting. I had obviously immediately noticed the title of the album “You Never Walk Alone” but didn’t actually think it was intentional. The Italian Army video talks more about it. This is such a hard story to hear about.
Also I’m sure it’s been mentioned, but the video is trying to say that Jungkook is pretending to be a survivor for the video. Thankfully he wasn’t really on the ferry.

The story of the Sewol and all the corruption behind it is something really terrible, the way those involved let those innocent children die. I remember watching a documentary of the incident where one of the rescue divers who was pulling out the bodies of the children, couldn't take the pain and took his own life. He said that when he heard the birds singing, he imagined they were the children asking him not to leave them behind. It's so sad and this tribute from BTS made them earn the love and respect of Koreans even more.

Fishing boats in the area stopped and pulled so many people trying to help. Bless those boatmen for showing that humanity and heart. And bravery. Showing that though this situation should never have happened. That between the crew of the Sewol telling people to stay out while they saved themselves and then the government trying to hide it and cover things to downplay it (which unfortunately happens a lot between companies essentially owning the political game) that there are some people that simply want to help. That there is still good in the world. And that each life the saved were given a second chance because of them. Not just a number.

I wanted to throw in my own request for you to react to the explanation video by Italian army. Both videos are good but in different ways and this one is probably the better one to start on since the Italian army video is more intense. If you do react to the Italian army explanation I have a few warnings:
-There will be a lot on screen and the text goes fast and often changes places from one scene to the next so you will need to pause a lot.
-It contains actual media footage of the event and interviews of people at the time.
-Some of the content the video covers is very rage inducing so prepare for a lot of emotions!
Even if you don't react to it, I am still grateful you watched at least one of the explanation videos.

Tip: BTW, you will have to pause a lot because they speak fast and everything moves fast! You will connect immediately even more based on what you shared about the previous tragedies. I wouldn’t wait a week. You can watch it, film it now and put it out next week but you need to see the the full picture plus the aftermath. In my opinion. Thank you again. I love your insight. #youneverwalkalone

BTW yes BTS was on the previous govt blacklist for this song and their MV plus donations to the victims. They’ve always used their music making social or political commentary. On the same album as this song was another feature track “Not Today” which starts with the line “all the underdogs of the world unite, today we fight” and the songs chorus uses a quote from Martin Luther “if you can’t fly then run if you can’t run then walk if you can’t walk then crawl but keep moving forward”. When I get upset about all the failures and corruption of Sewol etc I listen to Not Today. But yes they have many/most MVs just chalk full of symbolism and references with the Queen Spring Day having some of the most. This explination doesn’t even cover them all.

The train track/suicide theory has never ran true for a lot of people, and honestly, to me, feels like a big stretch.
It's a pretty common thing in history to put your ear to the tracks to listen for an approaching train. Many believe that this is simply Taehyung listening for the arrival of the others coming to him.
This, of course, does not negate the other observations made in the video.

This particular video did not go into a lengthy explanation of the laundry room I'll give you a short synopsis.
Of course the label on the washers say don't forget/never forget. The doors on the washing machines represent the portholes on the ferry and the clothes inside represent the students that were trapped and couldn't get out. As Jen leaves the laundry room even the clock on the wall has significance. The time is 9:35 and it is approximately the time that all the electronics on the ship stopped. Sometime between 9:30 and 9:40.

#YNWA is deeply referencened in the Italian Army version. The families of both tragadies met, this is a great explaination video but it does not go into great detail as the other. I had noticed the sign behind you before and wondered if you would get to this song. I am happy that you did. After I looked at the expaination video, I watched documentaries and old CNN reports and cried the whole damn time. President Park and several others were removed from office and arrested along with Capitain and some crew. Just devistating, they literaly did nothing and watched the ferry sink with all of that life to fend for themselves. Greed in the long run.

So please watch that! The BTS ARMY will be here to watch and listen to your reaction and comments because we’d like to hear your opinion on certain things especially when it comes to BTS music videos! My hope one day that the famous Director creator of “Snowpiercer” and “ Parasite“ will do a movie that tells the ins and outs of the tragedy not only the corruption of the South Korean government officials! Even the president of South Korea and the mishandling of everything by the Media of the”Sewol Ferry Tragedy “ this movie needs to be made! 💜🙏🏼 Thank you for your opinion and your reaction!💜

Your first experience of each song should be the official music video. Just take it in and enjoy it for the music first.
Then explore the lyrics and images, forming your own interpretation, like everyone else does when these songs are released.
This way, you'll get to form a relationship with the work as art, first and foremost.
Then check out explanation videos to compare notes with others.
In other words, feel the art first. Learn about the colors and brushstrokes after.
