One more thing to add, at that time talking against the government got you blacklisted. So a lot of artists never rose their voice against the injustice ( BTS during this time was not as powerful as they are now…so this song of their was very risky move) they even donated and visited the survivors and their family. That is why Spring Day never left Korean music charts :)

Besides BTS, I really admire Bang si-hyuk, the head of BigHit, the movie art director Lumpens and other people who made this song and MV. They were so brave but the best part is that they concealed the meanings deep inside so artistically. Thanks to that, the song was able to have the universality like misses friends and loved ones far away. In the COVID-19 era, a new meaning was added to this song. Now for people around the world, "Spring Day" is the day when COVID-19 disappears.

The song actually about missing friends. It’s the initial meaning of the song. Of course songs evolve and people give it more meaning. But the video itself is solely about the tragedy. Of course people who lived thru it will forever miss their friends. So all the meanings still stand together

There’s another explanation video of this song done by Italian ARMY and it has clips of actual footage of the parents of the children at the sinking ferry begging the Nation Guard to save their children and shows how fishermen tried to use their boats to save the children but were stopped by the government and their cries and screams for their children who were dying literally haunts my dreams. It’s one of the most tragic things I’ve ever witnessed.
The government even sabotaged the divers who wanted to dive to save the children by cutting their oxygen lines and making it unsafe for them to dive. It was literally the most disgusting thing.

It is a huge trauma for Koreans. The worst is that we watched the scene live when the ship was sinking. The students and other survivors were staying deep inside the ship, we couldn't see them with our eyes, but during the live broadcast, the ship slowly sank over several hours. We were so shocked at the thought of the people who would have fought in it, and felt so angry at the way the government handled that accident. So huge-scale candlelight protests lasted over several months and the president was stepped down.(It looked like her term was expired, but it was no different from resigning. She is currently in prison.)

@@claudiamanmej805 You know what? If you are deep inside of the ship, you'd better not wear the life-vest because it makes you float up to the ceiling, so maybe you can't go through the door down in the water. You have to wear it when you are around the deck. They wore life jackets, but the captain repeatedly said "Keep inside your safe room (deep inside)." But the captain and the crew were the first to be rescued because they were on the deck, but they didn't say a word about the passengers down there at that time!!
The accident water area is notorious for its cold & fast flow rate and poor vision. The rescue process was actually really dangerous, so some divers were sacrificed even if they were well trained marine corps, and some divers were killed themselves after some time because of the trauma. The tragedy went on and on 😢

I know many people prefer this video because it’s a softer approach to the tragedy but it also has a lot of associations with the MV that don’t necessarily fit. Italian Army actually went to Korea to find out more about the tragedy and built her video on her research. So it fits better and makes more sense but it is also a lot harder to watch because it doesn’t hide the harsh reality of the tragedy. Especially a parent will not be able to get through the video but I still recommend that video.

Spring Day has been the longest charting song on Melon (biggest music platform of S.Korea)
There are more symbolisms in the MV which weren’t covered here, an Italian army also compiled a video which is more thorough but since it covers the Sewol Tragedy in much more detail it might be hard to go through it esp for a parent..
One of the instances skipped was when V n Jin make the hand motion of camera it symbolizes the children inside the ferry recording messages for their family members as they were waiting for help to come that never did. The recordings are still present on TH-cam bt they are heartbreaking and I personally couldn’t watch them
What happened was made worse by the fact that the children could have been easily saved if govt actually tried to do something rather than just cover up their own sins
At the time BTS were just starting out, they did not have the power that they do now nd the govt was blacklisting all the artist who supported or helped the families but that didn’t stop the guys, they pledged financial support to the affected parties nd also met with the survivors along with Bang Sihyuk. They are genuinely Good (something which has become so rare) and I couldn’t be more proud of them

On the day in question it was made to travel despite a fog warning and it carried more than double the amt of cargo ( around 2000 tons despite only 900 tons being allowed) that too without any of the safety guidelines followed. Politicians n businessman literally lined their pockets with innocent lives. N even after the disaster struck to save their image no unfavorable press coverage was allowed ne even false reports were issued that all have been rescued while in honesty minimal effort was made to rescue the children cuz they just didn’t care. After this a lot of corruption in the Koran govt was exposed and even the president at the time was forced to resign. But all of it was too little too late..

As a mother I get you when you immediately think "what would I even DO if this was my child? " it's what I thought after I learned about it. It's hard enough for me to trust other people with my daughter for a day but to think that people whose literal job is the safety of those kids were the first to abandon them? Makes me want to homeschool... But I don't want to smother her either. Being a parent is fucking tough. After seeing some comments on the music video I watched this and the one by Italian ARMY. Italian ARMY catches a lot more symbolism and dives deep into the details of the tragedy if you want to know more about what happened on your own time. There are also documentary videos on TH-cam. I thought it was crazy I had never heard of it since not only was it a mass tragedy but it even impacted SK on government levels and lead to an impeachment of their president. You would think that would be HUGE but I never heard of it.

This is perhaps one of the reasons why this song is so loved by Koreans (other than the fact that this is a ballad song). Spring Day is now the longest-charting song on Melon Music charts (Korean music chart) and is still charting on top 100 until today, until this moment when I'm writing this comment. This song is just soooo loved by many people because of its meaning.
Also, fyi, BTS donated $100 million Korean won (approximately $85,000) to the Sewol Ferry Disaster 416 Family Council in 2017.
“Their donation is especially meaningful as it was recently uncovered that there exists a government blacklist on figures in the arts and culture industry. Supporting the families affected by the Sewol Ferry disaster was one of the reasons why people were placed on the list and discriminated against.
This is not the first time BTS have been involved in providing aid for the Sewol Ferry disaster. Back in 2014, BTS’s fans donated relief goods to families right after the incident occurred.
A representative of Big Hit Entertainment confirmed that the donation had been made, but stated that they hadn’t originally had any plans to make it public. They said, “From what I know, they planned to keep the donation private because they believe that you don’t make donations so that you can tell people about it. The members of BTS made the decision [to make the donation] and because we see this is a personal matter, we don’t think it’s right for us to speak on the matter in depth.”

Thanks Anthony! First thing I did after seeing this was to watch 'Snow Piercer'. We have some pretty sick and evil 'elite' people in this world and based on my personal political research....much is at the expense of children. I would also recommend the Italian explanation as well, but it's a bit more difficult to watch...not only because she speaks in Italian very fast and reading to keep up is difficult, but she also used a lot of live footage, on the scene....parents breaking down, footage of the kids in the ship (they were texting and face timing with family til the end). She does explain more of the political side, the reason the boat sank, the politicians who were held responsible (finally). People say there are two stories to this song....the lyrics (perhaps a love story) and the video (the telling of the Sewol). It is said that BTS had to be very careful in how the story was presented, so lyrically and visually they may have intentionally made it difficult to understand....it was VERY risky to go against the government during that time, but they stood up to the injustice the best way they knew how. They truly are geniuses. ARMY grandma

Honestly .. BigHit, BTS, their crew, their writers, their MV and performance directors are pretty much like activists but they give the message and symbolism thru their music and music videos .. that's why if an MV is part of the BU (bangtan universe) you have to pay attention to every detail, even a simple graffiti means something .. that's one main reason why i fell for them and the fandom because the amount of thought that they put on their craft is amazing, the fact that they don't even have a large budget on from 2013 to 2017 (their 1st billboard award was after YNWA was released) plus ARMYs have very keen eyes, very smart people because they figure out the symbolism that nobody will be able to do if they don't put the same amount of effort to research .. plus, BTS let's us interpret the music, lyrics and the symbolism of the MV on our own. until they officially confirm all our theories when they released their Webtoon. thank u so much for making an effort into understanding them as artists Anthony 💜💜💜

Yes this songs is absolutely amazing. When BTS sang “Spring Day” at their “WINGS CONCERT”. I totally lost it. Here a very much “Older Army” could not hold back my emotions. Not only do I get chills, they are so bad that I am eternally cold inside and shaking. Just happened again watching your reaction.
I will never be able to truly explain the feeling of hearing them sing this song along with 60, 70 thousand ARMY’s in one place. This tragedy should not of ever happened. But those cowards that left them all alone to die. I saw some of the raw footage of some of the young children calling home and letting some parents know what was going on. And the parents telling them to listen to the Adults. So very tragic.
    I LOVE BTS!

0:24 You can also watch the Italian Army explanation video for more in-depth information about the Sewol Tragedy, it's, really really heart-breaking and it makes the video all that much more impactful and meaningful. This song and this video are really ingrained into the hearts of k-army who saw the tragedy and suffered it.
I cry a lot when I listen to Spring Day, so it's a song I only listen to sporadically because of it. I've lost around 15 people in my life since 2010 and the lyrics hit me too hard.
13:22 It really applies to so many people. LGBT+ people who live in fear of being killed. Women. People of colour. Kids. Poor people. People in developing countries... It really is heartbreaking how society is not equal and how people in power care more about staying in power than about those they're supposed to protect.

I can never watch this video without crying. I heard when creating a film, usually left side (from our view) represents past and right side represents future. In the last scene, I can definitely see that. JK looking at the merry-go-round on his lift side means he thinks about the past, then 7 members walk to the right direction=future, to the tree. But then again Jimin looks up the tree on his left side, holding a pair of shoes (of his friend who passed) meaning he is thinking about the past and he will never forget about it. At the end, we can see the sunshine. We have hope.
Also Anthony made a good point that I never realized - when a member is singing, the video shows another member. Wow that's why I like watching reaction videos.

Music really transcends all walls of language. The first time I heard it, without even knowing the lyrics or understanding the video, I felt really overwhelmed and I was crying, I didn't understand what was happening to me while listening. I looked the lyrics up and the explanation for the MV and it hit me even harder as I understood my emotions.
The same thing happened when I heard Serendipity and Lie from Jimin for the first time.
This goes to show the power of their music and conveying their message.
This song is really special to RM and SUGA, cause they actually wrote it thinking of the "friends" they lost while choosing the path of becoming BTS, then after everything that went down in their surroundings, it turned into something bigger.
This is why BTS will remain one of the greatest, they don't turn a blind eye and they make sure their message is heard.
    💜

Agreed about the ItalianArmy video too. There was so much more corruption and coverup by the government than was portrayed here. The coverup was because the ferry was overweighted - I think by almost triple it's actual capacity - and divers were begging to go rescue the kids but were turned away and told they were handling it. So many unnecessary deaths that could have been saved. The washing machines represent the portholes of the ships the kids would have seen from the rooms below-deck as the ship sank. It's a heart-wrenching story, and so much of it wasn't told in this video. I highly recommend watching for the full impact of what BTS did here and the message they put forth with this song. I will readily join Patreon if you post your reaction to it there! I'll be back with a link!

Recently discovered you and this last week I have watched almost all your BTS videos, its been fun watching your journey discovering them. When you first reacted to Spring Day, I so wanted you to delve into it and its true meaning. Thank you for taking the time and learning more about its actual message. She is the QUEEN and deserves to be peeled back and honestly understood. As others said, watch the Italian ARMY version and you will understand the risk that BH and BTS took in writing this song and bringing it to life in a MV. Recently it came out that our boys went and spent time with the families when it happened. If that ever got out back in 2014 they would have been blacklisted to never work in the industry again.
    The lyrics:
I miss you (I miss you)
How long do I have to wait
How many nights do I have to pass
To see you? (To see you)
To meet you? (To meet you)
Pass the end of winter's cold
Until the spring day comes again
    Until the flowers bloom again
Please stay, please stay there a little longer
It took 3 years to raise the ferry and its said these lyrics are symbolic in asking "How long do we have to wait to collect the bodies of our family and friends that are still down there, season after season". It was raised in the late Spring, May 2017, 2 months AFTER Spring Day was released.
This song still makes every ARMY cry, no matter how many times we have heard it. It is also the reason it is so beloved by the Koran people.

Somehow I never thought of watching a video that explains this song, probably because I got so overwhelmed by the sheer quantity I had to catch up to, so I only knew that it had something to do with this huge scandalous accident in Korea. And still Spring Day had been the reason why I became a fan of BTS because I still got the message and knew that there were lots of messages and complexity hidden inside - from the moment I saw V lying down on the train rails, I knew it was about suicide. It was the first time for me to see such great production quality in combination with such a bold and explicit reference to this "taboo" topic. I'm five years older now and looking back to this song and the explanation of everything, just proves me what I already felt without any explanation back then. Damn. Can't help but be proud of them. They are one of the biggest choices, I am glad that I decided on.

Also, the artistry is augmented by RM's dedication to finding and creating lyrics through his reading....Omelas.

You know what beautiful abt bts and army? This. This is. Every comeback, there's army that will explain abt the lyrics and mv. They will give other armies explaination and we that got the explaination will appreciate everything from BTS, producer, composer, Mv director, stylist, Mv set settup and everything behind the song. Everything abt bts is so special to me. They are a brave artist. This tragedy is sensitive topic at that time. But bts with them fight together. And thanks anthony for this reaction. 💜

I love the thought and empathy you bring to your reactions Anthony, thanks for sharing with us. I always enjoy rewatching BTS songs from another person's perspective - and you always have a few new thoughts for me. That opening scene, I think V is listening for the train as you also wondered in your first reaction. The longing for someone lost runs so strongly all through the song - I feel V is listening hard for the fading sound of those who've travelled on where can't follow. Leaving him alone in a cold, silent world (or place).
