this is the single edit....the Doors didn't play live,,,,just live vocals by Jim....as it was usually done on tv those days with only live vocals...the broadcast was live, not the band playing
@@petefilipovits9262 I always thought that, but I just listened to the single edit and the Ed Sullivan show...and you are right. One is never too old to learn
I still remember seeing The Doors on the Ed Sullivan Show...Sunday Nights...with my Aunts, Uncles & Cousins...probably at my Grandfathers home when I was 9 or 10 years old. Always loved it, Jim & The Doors. Thx Doug.
Ed Sullivan did the same thing with the Stones' Lets Spend The Night Together. Mick had to sing Let's spend some time together. Pretty funny watching Mick singing it and rolling his eyes. Check it out.
Ray Manzarek plays a Gibson G 101 and a Fender Rhodes bass. He replaced the vox Continental because it was sensitive and used to break during the transport and gigs
You gotta check out "Touch Me" sometime! It's my favourite, because it's pretty crazy, and in a way that particularly makes me want to hear a composers take. Strings, horns, a sax solo...it's just wild!
I vaguely remember watching this when it originally aired. I was 7. I also vaguely remember The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. Edit Doug, about your comments at the end, we're still fighting that social battle today... and I think we just took a step backward.
Great flashback for me Doug. Remember watching this performance live on the Ed Sullivan show at 14 years of age. Seems crazy that it was taboo to say “higher” in a song back then. My recollection is that it was likewise taboo to say the word “pregnant “ in the movie “Gone With The Wind”. Truly crazy! Thanks for yet another great review!
Seeing Robby Krieger's mischievous grin after Jim Morrison sings "girl we couldn't get much higher" ... yeah, he knew they weren't supposed to do it - and he knew they were going to do it anyway. Greatness.
You should definitely take some time to listen to the album cut. The interlude, excluded from the single cut, is a showcase of the bands ability to set moods and, of course, Ray's genius abilities.
I was always familiar with Jose Feliciano’s version, but The Doors weren’t heard much in the UK at the time (late ‘60’s). They were a superb band, with an amazingly charismatic singer.
Believe it or not, this was the first song guitarist Robbie Krieger ever wrote. He came in with the original composition and the rest of the band collaborated on it.
Mick Jagger, months earlier by singing Let's Spend "Sometime" Together, didn't do what Jim Morrison did in that Show when he sang the full lyrics of Light My Fire.
I saw this episode live and of course, we didn't know about the censorship issue, but when Jim sang 'higher' and I remember my grandmother saying something about 'those druggies' and not acknowledging his talent. lol. Most people who believed what the government told them about marijuana were the ones who drank the Kool-aid and believed EVERYTHING the government told them. Of course, back in the mid to late 60s, the images being shown on the evening news about the 'Hippies" and their culture was so slanted to the negative, not mentioning the basis of the hippie movement, that being Love and the need for it instead of war.
Don't forget Touch Me, also recorded live on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Stunning visuals of the classical musicians behind the non conformist Jim Morrison.
My folks didn't watch Ed Sullivan that much...but I know that I saw one of the performances by The Beatles...keep in mind that I was born in '58. What really gets me is that there were only five years between Morrison's death and the emergence of New Wave.
On the albums they always had a traditional bass track to beef up the Rhodes, but in this recording the key bass sounds great and fills up the low end perfectly
Hei Doug, i found myself over the years thinking how that sound really was. And what is, ir that the Ray's top piano is the bass line of The Doors music, while Rob plays the guitar. Cheers.
Great that this is released on this day. I‘m from Austria and we have our own political issues, so all I can say is hang in there. I love this channel. I‘m a musician myself and it’s so great to see that all kinds of music are celebrated here I‘m a Black Metal guy but The Doors was the Band where I really felt understood in so many ways. There is so much to dive into here. I recommend the Song Moonlight Drive!
You hit the nail on the head Doug with it being ambiguous...a lot of songs with " high or higher" lyrics including John Denver tunes that didnt nessasarly mean getting stoned but could also be a feeling of being high spiritually or romantically etc
His testimony in front of Congress was great. John Denver, Frank Zappa and Dee Snider from Twisted Sister all testified w.r.t the PMRC wanting to put warning labels on albums.
I think The Velvet Underground & Nico needs to be done as one-sitting. The songs individually are excellent, but the whole thing as a piece is really mindblowing. I'd be especially interested in Doug's reaction to this - considering what an atonal, druggie mess the album is. Often out of tune and/or out of time, but damn - it just works so well.
Ed Sullivan asked the Rolling Stones to change the lyrics to Let's spend the night together by Let's spend some time together. They didn't and Ed was livid...
Crazy to think there were so many hang ups about drugs at that time when the bluesmen of the 30’s and 40’s were big heroin users and had massive issues with addiction. All legends.
Two artists I know of have been compared specifically to Jim Morrison: Michael Hutchence of INXS, and the lesser known Jeff Martin of The Tea Party. Jeff has a similar look, has a deep, kind of haunting voice and their band uses some middle eastern and North African sounds in their rock.
Love you show. You always help me put meaning into music that I like but wanted to know more about. A suggestion for a review "The Rumble" by Link Wray. Released in 1958 and the only instrumental banned from the radio. Look for Jimmy Page listening to it.
How things were changing back then. A bit over a year later (Dec 29, 1968) Sly & the Family Stone played "I Want to Take You Higher" on the Sullivan show th-cam.com/video/WG_xmmllfFw/w-d-xo.html and I have not heard of any negative reaction to that performance.
Those days mainstream society hated the youth of the 60s and our rebellious attitude towards one dimensional parents and strict rigid authorities. The Doors and many others helped us to challenge them.
Hey Doug. Epica just released a live performance of their song The Ghost in Me (with orchestra and choir) that is based on Danse Macabre of Camille Saint-Saëns. It would be a Huge shame for us to pass on that, don't you think? 😉
the song is about a fire of love between two people, the Sullivan people just assumed the word Higher was a drugreference, but that is not at all clear in the lyrics
Is there a request procedure for the Daily Doug channel? I've got a billion and one songs that I'd love to see covered, but I don't know how to make those requests in a respectful manner and in a place where it will get seen. Is it through Patreon? Is there a minimum tier required for it?
I’ve always equated The Doors with Nirvana and not just because the lead singers died young. I’ve never understood the adulation they received. I liked some of their songs but never thought “that’s amazing.” Obviously, a lot of people thought there was something amazing to their music.
Slightly off topic but here in the UK, although has similarities of Doug’s narrative after the video… was the fact that this hit described below went to No. 1 of the ‘organised’ charts by BBC Frankie Goes to Hollywood became infamous when their first single, 'Relax' was banned by the BBC in 1983 for its overtly sexual lyrics and homoerotic video. The video was set in an imagined BDSM club populated by Leathermen and drag queens.
Probably unwittingly, you have featured "Light My Fire" on 5th Nov, which is bonfire night in the UK. 😅. I actually prefer José Felicianno's cover better than the Doors' original. The bosanova rhythm has stuck with me for over 55 yrs - maybe because I used to dance to it during my uni years.
Such stupid (attempted) censorship, but remember, networks couldn't even show Elvis Presley's hips back in the day, because his moves were deemed too suggestive. 🙄 The album version of this song is 🔥.
I don't think it is that at all, I think it is a fall in line or else mentality that still is an issue unfortunately. A lot of people talk about freedom, in nice terms because that is what you suppose to do right? but it seems most people don't want it, either completely or not as much as freedom demands.
Thank God for people who push boundaries....good Ol Jim !!!
This is close to the single version. The studio version with the extended keyboard and guitar parts is so much better!
this is the single edit....the Doors didn't play live,,,,just live vocals by Jim....as it was usually done on tv those days with only live vocals...the broadcast was live, not the band playing

The Doors are one of those bands who I prefer in the studio. The full length studio version is the one you need to check out.
Live in Boston and Live in Detroit are also phenomenal versions, they're very long though. I think Detroit is close to 20 minutes.
I vaguely remember watching this when it originally aired. I was 7. I also vaguely remember The Beatles on Ed Sullivan.
