The TH-cam channel The Charismatic Voice did an interview with David Draiman years ago, and he said he had a lesion on his vocal cord but didn’t want to cancel their performance on Conan. David was disappointed in his performance that night. I must say, he’s the only one disappointed by that performance. He was amazing!!
Growing up in the 60's and 70's, I always loved the original S&G version. Recently when my adult son asked me to listen to the Disturbed cover, I was hesitant - how can anyone attempt to cover a masterpiece? I was wrong. Listening and watching David's emotions and passion come through, it became clear that the S&G version was a sad warning to society of their concern about ignoring and not caring about what was really important in life. They were seeing it beginning in the 60's when this song was written. The Disturbed version seems to express the anger and utter disappointment that we didn't listen to the warning, and it's only gotten worse as we chase after the things we made more important. This is a perfectly appropriate and very well-done cover. MAYBE we will heed their warning now? Anyway, so glad they did this cover. I've listened to it countless times now.
The awareness to acknowledge one’s maturity/ “different opinions “, in a review of who we are and who we “where “ is insightful and intelligent. Love this Doug, Rock on my guy!!!!
Always loved David Draiman's voice since Disturbed's first album dropped, and they all really are incredible musicians. Can't wait to see them live again, and hope they play this song.
I remember you reviewing this , also your first Maiden and Devin Townsend. Hadn't realised it's been that long , how time flies when you listen to good music. Doug thank you .
Congrats on 2 mill. Another GREAT cover by a metal band is Five Finger Death Punch doing House of the Rising Sun, changing the time signature front 3/4 to 4/4 in order to change from a folk sound to a rock sound. You should check it out too.
Super congrats on 2 million views on SoS. i have been here for the majority of your journey. Love your reactions and insight to the music. Keep up the excellent reactions.
There is another live version out there from a concert where he duets this song with Miles Kennedy. They sound great together and you get some of the classic harmonies with the new style.
I watched that reaction back in February 2021 and thoroughly enjoyed it, around the time I subscribed to the channel. I also very much enjoyed this reaction to that reaction. I also joined your Patreon later in 2021. So, Doug, thanks for all that you do, and thanks for bringing us along for the ride.
I know the performance from Conan is very popular but I think their performance with Myles Kennedy is even better. Definitely worth checking out, maybe when your original reaction hits 3 million!
There's a version with Myles Kennedy?!? OMG I'm checking that out now. I bet David and Myles' vocals would be a fantastic blend. Edit: Just heard it and yes indeed their performance is amazing! The harmonies❤❤ Sound of Silence Disturbed ft. Myles Kennedy Live: th-cam.com/video/H3By4DZyTNM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Iwop7xjhhVSd-pJH
Such a fabulous presentation of that song either way. David's voice is extraordinary. I have a particular fondness for those lower voices. Thanks for visiting these 2 versions.
Looking forward to THIS video getting a Doug reaction when it hits 2 million, so Doug can react to himself reacting to himself reacting to this song. 😂
Great insight as always. I agree music is a journey and hopefully along the way we may gather new insights, understanding and wisdom. There is much I am glad to have given a second or even third chances and not all of it is music. On a different topic how do you like your Meze headphones? I have had a pair for about 2 years and I really enjoy them.
It’s interesting to hear from Simon and Garfunkel their reaction to this cover. They actually wanted their version to sound closer to what Disturbed did instead of the version we got which is what their label wanted.
This was great, Doug. I will say that I don't mind the pauses. I kind of prefer them actually so you can get your thoughts out without distraction from the music. But backing up a little after the pause to get the context for what's coming next helps. Cheers to the 2M.
If you haven't done so already, it would be interesting to see your reaction to the Disturbed/Myles Kennedy live version of this. I think it's the only time they've done it with a guest vocalist.
One of the problems with the live performance is that the TV show producers insisted he was autotuned. Even if it's not heavily processed, it colours the timbre. He was pissed about it but didn't have any say in the matter.
David Draiman stands out as a great vocalist because of the nuances of his NATURAL voice. Autotune and Pitch Correction brings singers like David Draiman down to the level of lesser singers.
I laughed when you were freaking out about stopping the music. I feel that way every time a person who is doing reactions videos, does that! It's like "Stop interrupting the music and listen. It will tell you the story!" I love this version of the song more than Simon and Garfunkel's version. I think David showed the frustration that people didn't get the message from the first performance by S&G.
One of my favorite songs sung truly beautifully. That is the hallmark of genuinely great songs…they can be sung in different ways and sound tremendous. I love S&G and will never say it’s less than Disturbed’s interpretation. Each tells the story of the song differently, and I’m grateful to have each to listen.
2024 Doug reacting as I did to the 2021 Doug video. Oh well we were in lockdowns. Simon & Garfunkel's version are more of a silent (heh) introspective. Disturbed turned it into a song of protest.
Totally. It's very difficult to always be 100%. Nuance is the key here. Kudos to David for doing this, despite being sick. Plus, the band is excellent. And to hell with autotune. P.S. Why say "from" and not "by"? I'm curious why the grammar has changed... songs have always been "by" a band, and not "from".
Doug you should listen to the band White Lion. The guitarist Vito Bratta in his melodic phrasing and his memerable solos and I think you would really enjoy them
One song I'd love to hear your take on is "Underground" by Cody Fry. It's one of the first songs I ever listened to that truly left an impact on me and was actually what inspired me to get into composing myself. I think it's truly a beautiful track and, as I said, I'd love to hear you react to it and discuss it. Anyways, thanks for all the great content! You're probably my favorite music reaction/analysis channels
I'm sure it's already been said, but the fact that David Draiman had high fever during the Conan O'Brien performance adds even more value to his incredible performance. One of the best metal vocalist on earth
Sorry I had to drop, power cut. Doug please check out Corvyx’s cover of Sound of Silence . Please I have asked before and I know you’re busy but it’s worth a watch I promise you that. ❤
Please react to "Sogno di Volare" by Christopher Tin from Civilization IV, it's a classical composed masterpiece for the most famous 4x-game from Sid Meier. ❤❤❤
He stopped it way too often back then but at least he didn't insist on inserting a box of rice into everything. The herb is perfectly acceptable but I have often left a post due to the cereal.
My only issue with this song isn't actually the singing, its the instrumentation. The Sound of Silence really effectively uses its soundscape- it almost stands equal to the singing itself. Honestly the production in general is a driving force behind what elevates the song. The studio version for DISTURBED was, in my opinion, trying to be a bit too grande in its instrumentation and didn't use space as well. I think that flattened the song out for me. However, I had never heard the live version. Now I wish there was a version that was half way inbetween the two (and with studio production) because I think I'd actually really like that version of the song.
Just think, in three years you can do a reaction of you doing a reaction of your reaction. All kiding aside, this is a cool idea. Going back and crutiqueing yourself.
I love this cover but he blew one word, substitutes "on" for "of", a little liberty taken but you should not change perfection. Other than that, its great! Congratulation on 2 million views Doug! PS he fixes it in the live version!
I don't quite remember when I started regularly following your channel -- must be some time in 2021. This is the oldest reaction by you that I watched according to my TH-cam history.

David stated that during the live performance of The Sound Of Silence on Conan O'Brian .... he had a lesion on one of his vocal cords - hence the notable difference from the studio version vs the live performance .... Of course this would explain the differences between the two recordings. I still think the live performance is unequivocally the best live version of any song in existence.

I do like this new style of letting the music play all the way through. It's funny, the videos on The Charismatic voice are about the same length, and the way she does it with the pauses, I think you lose a bit of something from it - the vibes, though maybe that's better for in-the-moment vocal analysis. Anyway, like I say, I prefer it this way with the backstory at the start and the summary at the end. Also, great song, despite what I think of David.
