I remember watching this as a kid. Later found out Ed told them not to sing the line “girl we couldn’t get much higher” but Jim did. Ed was so mad he never let them on again.
It's kind of left up to interpretation, but in 1967, the squares thought for sure, that it was a drug use reference, so Ed asked him to change the lyrics but Jim didn't. I always thought, it was ambiguous enough, just to leave it alone.
Famously Jim Morrison sang the line, girl we couldn’t get much higher, against the wishes of the show’s producers. When told that they would never play the show again, Jim replied, we already did The Ed Sullivan Show, why would we come back. ✌️
So the story goes. Only Ray told that story and John and Robby went along with it as it is a good story. Ray never let the facts get in the way of a great story. The Doors did a lot of TV shows and never more than once. They did not want to be the "house band" for Ed Sullivan. They wanted to do Winters show and the Smother's Brothers. They also did not want to make trips to New York with all their equipment, engineers, and producer in tow. I am sure there is some truth to the story Ray told but I never seen anything to prove a ban. Ed's son in law lost his poopy and yelled some things. Sullivan would have had Satan on if it got ratings.
Whereas Mick compensated. .When ol' Ed asked him to sing "Lets Spend SOME TIME Together" instead of "Lets Spend The Night Together"...But during the performance, you can see Mick and Bill roll their eyes during the switch.
@@rockinrobert100 The BBC banned a lot of Beatles and Stones Songs. The Beatles Girl was banned for what they said was "tit tit tit" that was just a T sound that was nonsense.

They weren't banned from television; they were banned from the Ed Sullivan Show. They were asked to replace "higher" with "better", and they agreed. Then when they went on, Jim sang "higher" anyway. He got banned for singing the lyric "higher" when he was asked not to before the performance. Jim decided that No One was going to dictate to him and have him change the actual lyrics. Mick Jagger had a similar situation happen when Ed Sullivan had the Stones sing "Let's spend some "TIME" together" when the real lyric was "let's spend the NIGHT together. The difference was that the Stones wanted to come back to the Ed Sullivan show again, which they did.
Val Kilmer (Doc Holiday) did the Morrison biopic ( and memorized)50 songs-the surviving band members listened and said they could not differentiate between the two! Check it out. Fun fact: Morrison was the son of a high ranking Naval officer who did not approve of some of his antics. Helluva talent, died too young.
I worked in a music store all through the 90s and Jim Morrison (from a tribute band) used to come in and drop off flyers for their shows from time to time. The guy acted, sounded and looked just like Jim (especially with the shades on). It was incredibly amusing and awesome.
This is probably one of Jim's best live performances. Often at at concerts he was so drunk and/or high that he would show up late, forget lyrics, and ramble incoherently. There is another good one, I think at the Hollywood Bowl maybe? But in general, studio recordings are your best bet when listening to The Doors.
The Doors were banned from The Ed Sullivan Show, but not from TV entirely. There are clips of them performing songs live from their LP "The Soft Parade" on public television. Then they appeared on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour performing "Touch Me" and "Wild Child" where they sang live with the instrumental backing mostly recorded, except for the sax solo on "Touch Me" which was live. The Smothers Brothers show (I watched every week) presented a lot of rock groups that you didn't see often elsewhere on TV, such as Jefferson Airplane, Steppenwolf, The First Edition, Donovan.....and a memorable ear-shattering performance by The Who. The Doors generally didn't go for TV dates at that time but they made an exception for the Smothers Brothers. (The Smothers show got censored and eventually cancelled by CBS .) Robby Kreiger was the main writer for the song. He said he wanted it to start with as many different chords as he could cram into that intro.
That same year The Rolling Stones went to Ed Sullivan and were asked to change their line “let’s spend the night together” for “let’s spend some time together”. They did it.
Ed Sullivan featured a lot of “safe” pop bands like Fifth Dimension, The Association, etc that were family friendly. The Doors however were a different animal.

You should listen to the full-length version of the song. This is basically the radio version which is WAY shorter. The keyboardist is playing the bass lines with one hand and the melody with the other, if I learned correctly, and the full version has a long keyboard part, and I feel like the song is incomplete without it, just like it's heard here in your video. They've got so much great material in the short time they were relevant before Jim's death in 1971.
I remember seeing an interview with Charles Mansion when I was in my late teens/early twenties, and he sang and danced to this song in the interview. ☹️ Omg…it creeped me out so bad I couldn’t listen to this song again for a long time.
A couple of things: 1 I believe the Doors (or at least Morrison) were/was posers. They started a rumor that they were the first band to smoke marijuana. 2. If you watch the Stones singing the song "Let's Spend the Night Together", you'll hear Jagger sing Let's Spend "Some Time" Together and resenting it every time he sang the lyric. All that being said, when I heard the "Light My Fire" in 1967 till now, it's a favorite!
A 24 year old Jim Morrison on Ed Sullivan, what a great scene that is. In the movie The Doors, they depict this scene, and that is the part of the movie where it gets silly. Jim was awesome in this performance, its iconic. If you see the movie, you will see what a gross misrepresentation Oliver Stone did of Jim during this scene, and the rest of the movie. The Doors were not banned from TV, they did other appearances after this, most notably they sang "Touch Me" on the Smothers Brothers, a year after they did Sullivan. The Doors were one of the greatest groups of all time, and to think they were really only together for 5 years, playing together with Jim before he died.
You know the rule "Don't interrupt a guitar solo," but there's another one, "Don't interrupt the organ solo," particularly the best organ solo of all time. Well, you'll have to listen to the studio version - the long one.
Love this song. There has been many covers of this song. Since you play what the people want, how about Sunny and the Sunliners called “ Talk to Me” a Texan from San Antonio.
You seriously need to see Oliver Stone’s THE DOORS (1991), starring Val Kilmer, who literally sounds exactly like Jim and sings as Jim. It’s a very trippy movie.
Great one Jay, one little suggestion to help this channel, just interact with us, it does not have to be often but just once in a while, where we will learn what songs you really like or which kind you really wanna review. AND if you like suggestions after we know a bit about the music you wanna review, where we can make those suggestions. I get it making suggestions could get over whelmed because everyone will send you one, so its better to interact with us here on the day you recorded the new ones. You Jay will be surprised of MANY more great songs you never heard.
❤️ this song. In my senior yr of hs, there was a boy i used to "talk" to who used to always greet me every day with "Hi, Gorgeous". 😍 He used to sing this song to me. 🤗💕

This song holds a special place in my heart. It sounds creepy but I had a 7th grade teacher who would sing this to me when he saw me in the hallway. The meaning for him was that I was extremely shy and he knew I was smart so he wanted me to shine. I saw him when I was in my 20's and he reminded me how he tried to encourage me to come out of my shell. Today he would probably get fired for singing that song to a student.

PEACE FROG is a GREAT song by the DOORS!
He used to sing this song to me. 🤗💕
have the double live 🥰 🤘 🔥
Love it. Hope your doing well.
The movie was called The Doors. Val Kilmer played Jim Morrison.
Jim Morrison got in trouble almost everywhere he went and got arrested multiple times. He was the brat child of a Navy Admiral.
Watch the Doors movie. It’s a good introduction to them and their story. Val Kilmer sings the songs and even sounded like Morrison. Good stuff.
Check out the live version of Touch me
Please react to Primus - Tommy the cat
Wacky song (as usual) but the bass and drum work are so killer. Either the studio version or live at bonnaroo 2011 would be awesome!
Lots of good live Doors stuff on youtube. You have to see Jim live. He was one of a kind.
Check out the Rolling Stones on Ed Sullivan singing "Let's Spend the Night Together".
You may be one of the first larger reaction channels I have ever seen that has never reacted to Dimash. Wow!
I have listened to a few of your reactions today... Nice channel.
(If you decide to react to Dimash... start with SOS (2021)
Jay- now you gotta watch Jimmy Fallon doing him in this same get up but singing Reading Rainbow , Doors style!!
No autotune. Tinny recording - and they still blow it out of the water.
7:06 (album version)
2:52 (single version) US Billboard Hot 100 peak # 1 , was there for 3 weeks at number 1
You would definitely love Riders On The Storm. Very atmospheric. There’s a wild version of this song done by Mae West.
🤘 " riders on the storm "
have the double live ... 🔥
