- We're back with another Marvel vs Capcom 2 character overview! Today we're looking at Ruby Heart, an original character from MvC2 who is also rumored to be a scrapped Darkstalkers design. But is that true??? Let's get to the bottom of it, and talk about why Ruby is such a good character in MvC2! Hope you enjoy!

SonSon is half an original character. She's the granddaughter of the original SonSon from an old arcade game. She's loosely based on him.

Rejected Darkstalkers character or not, I’d be perfectly happy to have her appear in a new Darkstalkers game! Amingo, too!
May as well include Son-Son too. All three of them fit conveniently well within a Darkstalkers game.
@@Negajoe I tend to forget her since she is tied to another franchise but I definitely agree she’d fit fine in a Darkstalkers game. Supposedly Ghost n Goblins is also connected since both have the Makai as a setting.
I had always thought Ruby was the main character of MvC2 and owns a ship that travels through dimensions which explains the crossover.
That kind of makes the most sense

Maybe the idea yes, but Ruby Heart the character I don't think isn't really for darkstalkers, unless she's a captain of a ghost ship or something.
Her idle also has too little animation to fit the avatar of the other cast members.

I could definitely see her as a hunter pirate archetype. Her hunting ghost pirates as her daily basis to get treasures. Like BB Hood hunting down monsters to get money.
Capcom saw Captain Kidd from World Heroes and thought "we could do that too"
she’s such a cool character. i really hope she makes an appearance in the next MvC game.
Also strong about Ruby is the fact that the ghost chest super, if DHCed just after the chest appears, will continue emitting ghosts during the next super as if it were not cancelled. Makes for a good safe switch DHC and makes interesting combos possible.
I'm banking up tech for this 20? Year old game that I've never played, if I ever end up at a cabinet or tourney, I at least will know what's happening

Same. I don't care at this point if she was intended for DS4 or not. If they ever make a new DS, just add her, Amingo and SonSon. They all fit perfectly.
Agreed. The same goes for Amingo and Sonson as well. Too bad that would require Capcom to care about _Darkstalkers_ in the first place though; at this point Capcom only cares about Morrigan/Lilith and maybe Felicia.
@@MusicoftheDamned I think the biggest factor holding back a new darkstalkers is the morphing. It would be a LOT of work to recreate all the body morphing from the original sprites in 3D models.
My wish wouls be to bring in ArcSys to develop the game with them, as their anime cel shaded style involves tweaking each frame to give dynamic angles.
Because let's be honest, while I like MVC3, there was nowhere near the amount of personality in the movements in Morrigan and Felcia than the original sprites (and Shuma Gorath too)
@@MusicoftheDamned Well, I don't think that it's about them not caring for Darkstalkers. I think it's because they lack faith in it selling well. And by well I mean like 1 million+ units out the gate. This is why they only focus on Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter. I think they should try putting together a smaller team with a smaller budget and get it done. The investment would still be positive. They should do this with all their games they haven't touched in a while. Look how good skullgirls turned out and I'm sure it didn't have a half of SF budget.
@@baddabaddabaddaswing Yeah, I vaguely remember hearing that, and honestly, that animation excuse and the simple "creating games costs *a lot* of money (nowadays)" I can understand. It's the other weird excuses, like Capcom apparently believing it can only have one series per genre existing at any time, that get me. What gets me in the case of _Darkstalkers_ in regards to that particular excuse is that _Street Fighter_ and it barely have anything in common, even in terms of just basic aesthetic, beyond just being 2(.5)D fighters. Given how there's always been a vague niche for a more horror-oriented fighter and only _Mortal Kombat_ and arguably _Skullgirls_ get anywhere near that still, _Darkstalkers_ could probably viable if they wanted to actually try. Capcom just doesn't want to take the risk, which is Capcom's prerogative but frustrating all the time.
All said, it probably wouldn't annoy me as much it does if Capcom also did anything with _Darkstalker_ characters other than Morrigan & Liltih and Felicia. Outside of whoring Morrigan out, which I guess is at least appropriate for a succubus, Capcon has tended to at best _maybe_ use other characters as one-offs if they show up at all and generally only if they're female. If you're a fan of any of the male _Darkstalkers_ characters, then you've basically been out of luck for literal decades beyond Demitri and Jedah making appearances in really crappy games like _SNK vs. Capcom: Chaos_ and _Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite_ like Capcom is channeling some type of monkey's paw; not like Hsieno-ko got it any better in _MVC3_ unfortunately where she showed up as the worst character in the game. You think at least Talbain | Gallon would have shown up in at least one other fighting game by now since he's a martial artist, but nope. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Just like _Darkstalkers_ seeming chance of returning any time soon.
Funny, Ruby Heart and Marrow was a team I rocked back in the arcades with Cable in the back.

I have recently come to own a mvc2 cabinet so i been playing religiously for the last week and after not playing for nearly 20 years Im a bit rusty to say the least. Your mvc2 videos have been awesome. It's awsome to see this game still get the love it deserves after all these years.

Wait! You missed a super! I think it's HK, LP, down, HP LK. She droops a barrel on you then you throw swords into it with lp and lk I think. It's pretty useless but fun to style with.
You can actually combo otg from a dhc into it with crouching lk hp i think it is. I watched too many Jwong videos.
Was going to say, the pop up pirate super has a bunch of uses and can do stupid damage if you get lucky

@@fakeigniz13 THANK YOU! I was going to mentioned it based on a children's board game game, but I could not remember which one. Never got more then 3 myself, but yeah looked like it could get crazy damage.
@@ReikuYin yeah it doesn't fully connect, but they go in hard knockdown and you can combo otg as soon as they land, the knife throwing thing is indeed inspired by a childrens game where you have to stick knives in a barrel hoping that the pirate's head inside it doesn't pop iirc.
Also the super is a 50/50 each time between lp and lk, so it should be 1 out of 16 times you get full damage :)
She also has this weird glitch where she can leave like an invisible ghost on the screen that makes her opponent go into a block if they hold back even though theres nothing to block so it messes up their movement options
FG development history is my second fave thing to hear veterans talk about, right behind tournament stories.

Oh Im seeing why Marrow is good... She put in some work here and there for sure. I love how you mix it up and use a variety of characters, and showcase a lot of lesser used ones. Here's hoping you show of some of the sauce SonSon has.

this game came out around the time of Skies or Arcadia with Dreamcast's release. There was a famous Famitsu interview in Japan a year before. I think that's what it was since the game was made with the official Naomi SDK (e.g. they were in close contact with Sega devs).
TLDR she is the long-lost SNK character ripoff version of a Skies of Arcadia character
When I saw her forward dash my brain automatically thought of I-no and the fact she had anchor and pirate ship is giving me I-no/May strive vibes
I main Ruby heart. A big thing she has going for her is that her Fireball Super sets up into the infamous sentinel dhc giving access to easy TODs off basically any hit. She can also bring the opponent down with her super and solo combo off of it into whatever she wants, including snapback, which is cool because she also has solo guardbreaks on incoming!
Ngl normally I root for your opponents to win but since today you were playing Runy Heart I was rooting for you to win
My favorite thing with Ruby is to pair her with Blackheart and just spam the pillar moves. It's actually a surprisingly good lockdown tech.

I love ruby heart her pressure is good and projectile too also the assist As well whenever she on the screen as long you good assist to back her up it ever dangerous not bad for a strong mid tier I really hope comes back her design so sick.

Ruby Heart does exist in an another game. She's in Sentinels of the Multiverse series but under the name of La Capitan!

Ruby Heart was basically also supposed to be a slight nod to Pirate Ship Higemaru. The pirate that appears during the barrel super (Tour de Magie) looks similar to Momotaru, the protagonist of that game. Another thing that somewhat supports this is that Capcom has the Shadaloo Research Institute, one of the characters on there is named Ruby and looks almost exactly like Ruby Heart, and is stated to be from the PSH universe. Momotaru was also almost put into SFV as a playable character, further supporting this.
SonSon in this game is the original SonSon's granddaughter. She likely was actually meant for Vampire Soldier (which was the working title for the 4th Darkstalkers game) due to her weird moves and being a monkey-woman, same way Felicia is a cat-woman.
Amingo, jury's out on him. Some say he was supposed to be in Vampire Soldier, others say he was from a cancelled rhythm game Capcom was planning. I think on the rhythm game front, people are confusing that with Sega's Samba de Amigo, which came out I believe around the same time as MvC2. If there was a cancelled rhythm game by Capcom, I would have known about it lol.
She is the sister of the pirates from Higemaru. It makes sense for her to be considered a Darkstalker since the pirates go to a version of Makai (Demon World/Realm) that has monsters from Ghouls/Ghost and Goblins enemies.

Now that i think about it, Ruby doesn’t really do any transforming or have any Zany stuff in her moveset like the rest of the cast (+Amingo). So i don’t think she’s a dark stalker either.

It sucks that Marvel has become such a bloated mess with Disney at the helm. We'll never see all these characters in a Capcom fighting game again because the characters IP's are so valuable, and DISNEY owns them, so it's just financially impossible for that to happen. I wish, but it Disney will never allow these characters to be in a fighting game that they don't outright own the profits of.

He means original characters as in "the character didn't exist before MvC2". Since Cable and Marrow existed before MvC2 (they are Marvel characters) that means they aren't "original"-ly from MvC2

ruby heart+doom or ruby heart+cable are both good and pretty easy characters. Then you just need a good assist like captain commando, cyclops, sentinel, psylocke, etc

I still find this seemingly sudden _MVC2_ resurgence rather weird as someone who hasn't been paying attention to the FGC lately, but I am definitely here for the Ruby Heart love. She was always my favorite _MVC2_ character, and the fact that she's rather good was/is just a bonus really. That said, I still find it funny that she has three really good supers and then what is arguably the single worst super in the game in the form that stupid Barrel super that I think is also a Lv. 3 for some unfathomable reason. I also remember being rather surprised, when I got to play this game again randomly after so many years, at the deceptively short range of her c. HP, at least as it's starting up.
Sigh. This is making me wish she showed up in another (good) game. Even as much as the "she was meant to be a _Darkstalkers_ character" claim has always been a bit dubious and uncertain, she (and Amingo and Sonson) would still rather easily slot into that series. Too bad that would require Capcom caring about _Darkstalkers_ beyond Morrigan/Lilith and maybe Felicia first, which seems unlikely given how many good series Capcom has just sitting around unused. (Shout out to _Dino Crisis_ and _Breath of Fire_ among other series. I'm glad that _Devil May Cry_ escaped such a fate.)

honestly what is even like.... going on with her. Like she is cool don't get me wrong but like how did they even come up with this random magic pirate lady that doesn't exist. Like amingo makes sense, he actually does seem like something just made up on the fly, like if you had to make a random fighting character in 5 minutes a Mexicans cactus balloon sounds like it would be more likely to appear than whatever ruby heart is.
