    I feel like Chun-Li's power is entirely because of her core design. Much in the way that Zangief is defined by his command grab and Dhalsim is defined by his reach, Chun-li has that grounded neutral footsies... and it just so happens that one of the things that usually places characters high on a tier chart is the strength of their neutral.

      That was my immediate thought on seeing the title. Chun-Li is simple in concept and as a result consistently gets well built implementation in games.

    • @renwolf
      @renwolf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      If that was the case, Vega would be top tier in sf4 as well, no? Not being sarcastic, just asking. He's not very top in SFV either. I think Chun is top because they actually give her strong footsies and tools to support that. Like good aa's, reversal, good comeback mechanic(vt in sfv, her sa in sf3) etc. In other words, she gets what she needs.

    • @kevingriffith6011
      @kevingriffith6011 3 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      @@renwolf Vega's gimmick was always his odd approach angles, I thought. His specials are all about jumping, rolling and bouncing around the screen more than they are about maintaining neutral. His reach with his claw is good and so is his walk speed, but his defining strengths come with defining weaknesses: his anti-air isn't stellar and he prefers to fish for a knockdown in the neutral to set up a vortex rather than getting strong neutral conversions....
      At least that's the vega I've known historically, I don't know every incarnation of the character.

    • @YiddishDancingClown
      @YiddishDancingClown 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@kevingriffith6011 Not really. That's only SF2 where his wall dive was relevant. Every other game he's been in besides CVS2 they gutted it and he's been in tier jail for ST crimes ever since. He's a keep out character with tools for dealing with zoners. He's always had good tools, especially neutral tools (see cr.mp) and before V he even had reliable defense options like scarlet terror and his backflips. Good neutral tools only matter in the neutral, which although is a huge part of Street Fighter and fighting games in general gameplay, it's FAR from the only aspect of it.

    For anyone wondering why Chun's weird flip in ST can hit low is because in street fighter 2 lows are programed to hit by where the hit box hits. Its the same reason Sim's air drills can hit low because as long as the hit box hits the low hurt box only it'll count as a low.

    Chun Li's design caters to the fundamentals of competitive sf. Neutral has always been the most important concept in sf and chun li has always had great tools for it. Fast normals with decent range and priority also great walk speed.

    • @magwan77
      @magwan77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In SFV her priorities seem very low to me. If fired off at the same time, just about everyone's super trumps hers, and most people's EX do as well. That dreaded moment where one person activates super and the other does immediately after. It seems like in almost every case I've done this (first or second) their attack lands and hers doesn't. But people who main Chun just have to work harder. You have to land twice the hits and make half the mistakes against much of the cast. Getting through silver was tough. You can be on point and punish a bloody Ken a dozen times, but all he's got to do is spam the dragon punch a couple times to undo all your gains and his dragon punch eats right through EX legs.

      I don’t know, coming from Smash and largely being outside of the FGC, I have always seen Chun Li as “yeah she probably moves around better than Ryu, has some quick moves, and probably has some big and scary kick moves, and those traits remind me of Fox so she’s probably bonkers.” Obviously a reductive view of the character that has been fleshed out as I’ve learned more about traditional fighters, and obviously my perception was fueled by a degree of connection to the FGC that was at least larger than most people on the planet, but at the end of the day I’m not sure if that many people outside of the community think she’s that weak.

    One thing you forgot to mention about chuns super in 3s is that she moves in during the super freeze (during which the game doesn't take block inputs if you aren't already blocking when the super starts) meaning she could punish whiffs from almost full screen if she's fast enough. • @forestsavior

    Chun is pretty good in CvS2 as well. Not quite topmost tier like Cammy/Blanka/Sagat and more groove-specific characters (A-Bison/A-Sakura), but she's absolutely no worse than upper-mid overall. She can link super off Lightning Legs like in SF4, and she has only slightly-toned-down Hoyoku Sen damage/resets from 3S. Her normals are all still great, she has a 2f(!) jab, and she functions pretty well in most grooves. Her best grooves are probably C and N. Both grooves give her roll cancel and guard cancels, and N-Chun really shines because she has run, roll cancel, and only needs 2 bars for level 3 Hoyoku Sen, with a potential 3S-style reset to a lvl1 if she has 3 stocks. She's not as cheesy in A-Groove as the more well-known top tiers, but in C or N she can be a serious threat. Daidoraku's N-Chun is a good example of her potential in that game.

    Chun is free on wakeup in SF4. FA really isn't really the difference maker, it's that she can't stop vortex/safe jump pressure. She has a wide hit box which let's many characters sweep her from combos to set up safe jumps.
    She is still decent regardless.

  • @h.s6352
    @h.s6352 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I feel like she's set back in SF6 for the same reason as SF4. Mechanics like the Drive and Focus systems basically brick neutral and poking, which are always her strengths. Now she's forced to play different stylez, and at that point she's competing with characters that do these styles better. Juri in SF6 is basically a better Chun-Li in every way. The same can be said about Cammy whose only disadvantage compared to Chun is the lack of projectiles.
    The one thing still going for her is her versatility and it is greatly improved by the new stance, but it also means she's much more complex and hard to use, and she has to work hard to win rather than get cheap steals like the top tiers of SF6.

    22:07 Chun-Li is kinda bad in SFV? She's in the top 10 characters in the game! She was broken in S1 then she got nerfed which made her kinda mid tier and since then she just kept crawling her way back to the top. She's got crazy comeback power with her VT2. She isn't Cammy/Rashid/Urien broken tier but she's really strong.

    Chun is top tier in Third Strike and Alpha 2. Not in ST, not in EX, not in Alpha 3, not in SF4, not in SF5, not in the VS series, not in cvs etc. I believe someone like Sagat and Akuma has had a more consistent track record of being among the best characters in most of the games they appear in. But Chun does have a strong base design. So it is rare for her to be low tier in a fighter, SF5 season 2 Chun being one of the exceptions
