X5 was impressive. It didn’t have any type of off-road mode or diff lock. Xdrive reacts surprisingly fast.
This video shows the exact difference between crossovers pretending to be a tough SUV and the real SUV
All of these (other than the G Wagen and FJ Cruiser) are pretenders. Electronic systems with open diffs can get you a couple of hundred metres in an emergency but if you need to go a kilometre or more every one of these will break down long before you get there. The brakes will be completely shot and everything else in the drivetrain and suspension will be in need of major service.
As I look at all of the contenders trying to make it up a hill. There is room for improvement across the board. Eventually someone will come up with a way to drastically improve their performance. They just need to think outside of the box.
@@guidedmeditation2396 There is no reason to increase the performance for vehicles that are never actually going to do this. Most people who buy G Wagens never even leave dry pavement.
It's simple and not even expensive to add locking diffs and in the case of multiple-motor EVs software modes to keep the motors in sync. But there's no reason for manufacturers to do that when nobody needs it.
All of the people buying crossovers and most of the people buying G Wagens would be much better served by an estate/station wagon or minivan, or even a standard sedan. The whole point of crossovers and SUVs for manufacturers is higher profit margins, and for most buyers is to be high and mighty.

Honestly the G wagon is the best 4x4 out there since it has all 3 locks since it came out. If it cost as much as a jeep even in 2nd hand i tell you they rather get the G63 with their insane v8

@@sooooootamad7539 While I agree that G wagon is very good, I'd say Jeep Grand Cherokee WK with Quadra Drive 2 is pretty much equal, since it has lockable transfer case and front/rear lockers (yes, those ELSD's can create 100% lock). And at least here in Finland those WK's cost a fraction of a G wagon, so in a way it's a clear winner. But G wagon certainly can be modified way beyond WK to make it just a monstertruck with portal axles and enough lift to allow grown man crawl on all fours under it 😂

I know that this doesn’t count but how about electronic locking diffs? The G05 X5 has that option. 10.3 inches of ground clearance and under body protection.. pretty good off-roading on paper. This channel hasn’t tested that specification yet*
@@aidenp5768 Manual or with and Electronic switch is still manually locking. Some use motors to lock, others air or vacuum. No matter the mechanism if it locks it manually then this is the best.
Look at all the AWD systems here struggling on these baby steps.

The FJ Cruiser is a very good off-roader too, and much cheaper than the G

@@whatdidyoysay7036 Its not the power that makes the G Wagon the King, is the solid axle suspension and THREE diff lockers. It could have been the 286hp G350 Diesel and the result would be the same.
The X5 did predictably well. XDrive is quite intelligent and always does its job.

The Touareg here ha really impressed me. Especially considering that they used the 2.0 Turbocharged Petrol and not the 3.0 Turbocharged V6 Diesel which has loads more torque and horepower. Leave alone the Turbo-charged dieel V8.
I'd be interested if the other 2 would do any better, because I doubt they would. Weight matters.

It can do so much more. Went to a off-road track a while back witb a few buddies of mine. They all had pick-ups. Theh all laughed at me in the beginning. No-one laughed at the end... I own previous model. Think the new one's TC might react a little faster

I'm from Lesotho I wasn't surprised with the Touareg, I have a V6 3.6 .
That car can climb every hill, cross rivers, drive on Snow it's the best car ever.
Touareg did very well, I'm definitely impressed.
Im amazed with the Gwagons performance, many people downplay it's off-road capabilities but man a car that does off-road that well with a ton of luxury? I want it
i've never heard anyone downplay it's off-road performance? it's a beast. perhaps it's been downplayed by people that are not informed, but that's probably about it.
@@zoopa999 Well, that is the thing, a lot of people are clueless and misinformed. Whenever you see a promotional video on a g-wagon or a review about them, there's a huge list of people commenting how bad it performances.

It’s an off road master. Range Rovers may be equal, or very close. Problem is, they are highly likely to break down. The G-Wagen probably won’t. Major downside to the G, is the fuel tank range. OK people who can afford one are maybe not bothered about fuel cost. But having to stop every 300-350 miles might be a pain for a long road trip - especially off road.
don't forget, this was the the sport AMG version, which is supposed to be worse offroad than a regular G500

Those will leave you stranded out in the desert. How are you going to recharge them? A 120v outlet off a generator? At least you can carry a spare tank of gas with you with a ICE car

@@SUVBattle I don't know about the availiability where you are, but I'm really curious about how Lamborghini Urus would perform, especially comparing with other VW group cars like Audis. Torsus vehicles should be very interesting too, like the Terrastorm. Also, I'm a huge Suzuki Jimny fan (I've got one brand new and this years it completed 10 years with me). And it was really interesting when you compared a "basic" crossover like Nissan Murano against other more off-road oriented crossovers/SUVs.

Would love to see how my Suzuki Escudor all grip model does on here. I have driven off road a bit but mostly in snow. It will comfortably drive through 40cm deep snow, but never had in on a course like this. Would be nice to see how it compares to others

@@SUVBattle I don't know what vehicles you get over there, but a large suv test with things like the infiniti QX80, Toyota Sequoia, LX 570, Cadillac Escalade/Chevy Suburban, Lincoln Navigator/ford expedition, etc. Also we don't get a lot of vehicles or engines in the US that you guys get, so I'd love to see some of those.

@@SUVBattle Wow! This is going to be a great battle! Both vehicles have very good ground clearance and plenty of power. I think it will come down to electronics and function. I think the RR has the better terrain management system. Mercedes traction control system seems slower to activate. But the G63 does have 3 locking differentials. I think the RR will win in regular drive mode. G63 in off road mode. And the RR with the overall win.

Hello from Canada. Love what you are doing here. Tests like this are more relevant, most people don't have custom tires etc. This really shows the off-road ability of these cars for the typical weekend adventures. Please keep up the good work. Tesla did better than I thought. If it wasn't for those silly doors (can't have roof rack) I would consider one.

All depends on what aspect, in some cases the X5 has better clearance.. but overall obviously the G wagon without the AMG package is a better off-roader. The G wagon has front diffs and center diffs that the X5 doesn’t have. But the G05 simply is more stable off-road it does most of the off-road safe and easy. The X5 is lighter as well and more balance and depending on the obstacle it will handle that better too.
It would be really interesting to range rover sport against G wagon..
Nothing beats 3 lockable diffs.

It's a 2017 G-Wagen. It hasn't seen a real change since the 1970's.
If it was a 2020 model however, then you would be right with your point, as it has been redesigned completely.

The G wagon is in a class of its own. i mean on pure street tiers and factory suspension it outclases all the cars in this video. It also has by far the best engine sound with that deep V8 which dosent even rev during this whole segment.. Just amazing.
