VW Toureg has been the greatest pleasant surprise after driving SUVs from all the prominent brands. VW outdid itself... Extremely well-engineered & a remarkable value proposition... Absolutely agree with the reviewer..
Ive owned an ML500 plus three X5s over recent years and I currently own a Range Rover Sport. I recently drove the new Touareg and it blew me away. The ride, above everything else, is truly majestic. The silence inside the car is also noteworthy. The only thing that annoyed me was the “Golf” steering wheel. A bit of a letdown in an otherwise superb interior and huge 15” screen. Very hi tech. To top it off, the price is the icing on the cake. There is no doubt in my mind that this new Touareg is going to shake up this segment big time. Did I mention that it also very nice to drive, very car like with accurate steering and reasonable road feel. It’s on my list but I’m waiting for the 210kw motor and the R Design package which, hopefully, will have a more sporty steering wheel. Otherwise, a hard car to fault.
Captain Dasbomb and cost an extra $20k on what the others in this comparison cost so... is it really still a comparison at that point? Just get a Rolls Royce if price is no object.
This is a better review than carwow. That’s why I prefer review done by the Australians. Down to earth. Straight to the point. And don’t use a stick to poke exhaust.
Just ordered my new Touareg black edition here in UK. Cant wait. Cant beat the price/equipment for what is basically a Q7 in a cheaper suit with more toys.
GLE, then X5 followed by the Touareg for me. The Touareg is an impressive Volkswagen, a good car. It seems you had high expectations for the GLE, and it disappointed, not against its rivals but your expectations. A great review all the same, I enjoyed it.
Interesting test, the new Touareg is a giant leap forward from the last one and nearly lands it in executive luxury but not quite, if you not to concerned over brand it’s good value next to the other two. The over riding feeling when getting into the VW is wow, check out the screens and tech! Where as the X5, GLE and Q7 tend to reek of that next step of luxury, material quality etc, not that the VW is particularly poor but it’s certainly built to and for a different budget. End of the day you’ll have your own set of priorities and usually people buy accordingly (?).
Audi is NOT a luxury brand! When you say premium audi, you only say a8 premium audi and so, the other audi are NOT premium, they just seem to be but they are NOT!
I recently purchased a BMW G05 X5, hopefully it will be delivered at the end of this month. I chose between VW Touareg and X5 and went for X5. I’m driving a 2016 VW R-Line Passat wagon now, Touareg doesn’t give me the feel of “upgrade” very much when I spend more than $100k, I just feel a bit more “plastic” when I sit in the cabin, although it’s got really hi tech dashboard and impressive size of screens, also I don’t like the steering wheel, even my Passat has the R-Line sportive look steering wheel. Touareg is a good car, it is indeed a bargain version of Urus or Q8, but I’m sorry X5 is my pick. X5 is more luxury and interior material is much better.
They tried the most sporty X5, with 22" alloys on run flats, without the air suspension and compare it for "comfort" to the others. Huh. I own a G05 with 20" and air suspension, it's fantastic of comfort, and firm up superbly in sport mode.
I'm so glad badges do nothing for me but damn BMW is damn greedy. Paying for a phone mirroring service subscription. If it was any other company they would be getting crucified over
We can only work with what we're given, and BMW supplied us with the M Sport model without air suspension, but at the very least it has adaptive dampers. In truth, it's the GLE that needed the air suspension to stand a chance in this test, because it was the worst for ride comfort. Thanks Matt
Can you guys lead the way and please, please, please do a caravan tow test with these vehicles (BMW x5 now has 3500kg tow capacity). Happy to lend you our van if you cant get your hands on one for the test.
I own an E70 X5 and I'm ready to upgrade. The G05 X5 compared to mine feels very modern and has plenty of new tech. But comparing its (G05 X5) interior to the GLE, and in particular to the Toureg, it positively looks outdated already.
Volkswagen brand is in a class of its own... it’s placed between luxury and non luxury brands. The quality is on par with the best because people forget that VW owns Bentley, Bugatti, Audi, Porsche etc... so some models share components with those brands. I had a BMW 335i and C320 Benz and non were fun like my Jetta GLI and my current Golf GTI.
You're a fool if you say that! You know nothing about cars and this is visible ! Audi is NOT a luxury brand! When you say premium audi, you only say a8 premium audi and so, the other audi are NOT premium, they just seem to be but they are NOT!
Audi is very weak from all points of view and cannot be compared to BMW, Mercedes-Benz and especially VW, as Audi will definitely lose ! And Audi is NOT a luxury brand! When you say premium audi, you only say a8 premium audi and so, the other audi are NOT premium, they just seem to be but they are NOT!
It's a shame that VW stopped selling the Touareg in the US and instead gave us the comparatively plain and lackluster Atlas. I'm sure the Atlas will sell poorly and the executives at VW will have to rethink what consumers really want to buy. The Touareg had and still has a very strong following here -- let's hope they bring it back.
I’m not surprised…that Tourage is a killer. The new model (2024) is simply the best luxury suv available in Europe due to its origin and what you get for the price.
You are a fool ! You know nothing about the history of the Vw brand! If you only knew 3% of the history of the VW brand, you wouldn't laugh on the internet! Vw became a Premium brand in the true sense of the word since 1996 with the Passat model and then Vw became a LUX brand in the true sense of the word since 1999, at least VW has demonstrated this very clearly !

I just got the new Touareg here in NZ 3 weeks ago. Absolutely amazing car. Phenomenal what it can do. Super happy!!

The vw is beautiful, if I had the money that's the one out of these three I would buy.

I definitely agree, if I had the money for any of these I would pick the VW.
The VW is my pick. I will be stepping into my own by next year hopefully
Well done VW
The upcoming premium version of Touareg also offers rear wheel steering
VW Touareg all the way
I’m sure I would have chosen the Touareg myself thanks for a cracking review
So basically if the 6 cylinder Mercedes with air suspension was available it would have won. Hhmm
Captain Dasbomb and cost an extra $20k on what the others in this comparison cost so... is it really still a comparison at that point? Just get a Rolls Royce if price is no object.
Not necessarily. But it certainly would have been a better match.
Cheers

Volkswagen's new designs and quality in their vehicle is amazing, the Touareg would be my pick, it is just perfect !

Wow, I really like how you displayed the safety features. Clearly displayed a lot of info without it being overwhelming. 👍
The Volvo XC90 should be compared... heck do a mega test with the XC90, LR Discovery, the equivalent Lexus and of course the Audi Q7

Loved this video. Personally I'd take the VW only because it costs the least amount. All three will be reliability nightmares and future money pits
Thanks for the feedback!

the review wasn't accurate as the BMW X5 used wasn't fitted with the optional air suspension, and air suspensions always going to be smoother

Mercedes-Benz used to be the ride quality king but with GLE and GLC they can't do this anymore. That's really sad. They lost their mojo baby.
Got one already & a V8, love it!
where do you get carsguide merch?

Do the Touareg rear seats recline? How about towing capacities ?
yes it reclines and 3.5 tns with eather the 2 v6 tdi powrr output engines that they offer. The 4 litters v8 tdi towes more tns
Touareg is the Comfort & off-road king SUV
What about the Haval H9? That is just as prestigious and much cheaper to buy.
The exterior of the Touareg reminds me of a arteon
I really love the Touareg , but there is no way it beats the magnificence of the X5 and the lavishness of the GLE.
Max Mahinda ....but it does anyhow....
I like VW Touareg . But I want to a shirt Carsguide.Where can I buy that? Please let me know? Thanks!

How can you compare a 4 to a 6 here? Rather don't do it then. The X5 is also coming with a base 2 litre.
I’ll take the BMW.
the vw is very nice tho but it get lots of plastic part in it. but Mercedes is still the best

Vw toureg for me
The new Q7 should beat all of them
And the Porsche Cayenne should beat all of them including the Q7

C'mon guys - warn people about MASSIVE turbolag in tuareg.
It’s not massive at all. If you ever get into trouble due to the ‘lag’ then you are taking far too many chances pulling out in traffic period.

BMW most comfortable
Mercedes most sporty to drive
VW even plusher than BMW

Q7 or X5.

Not in this test!
Matt
No one really buys it outside of the US.
this American and their lexus brain. Anyway a lexus cannot compare with this 3 legendary cars
Man that Touareg designer literally cannot draw a circle or curve...it’s literally nothing but a bunch of straight lines ...lazy design
Why no audi q5?
Q5 is the size of X3/GLC, not X5/GLE.
Jaspii1 the selection was explained at the start of the video
That screen used in the gle is so hideous and shows how lazy the designer/s lack imagination.
VW luxury....hahaha....
