- Two neighbouring languages, two neighbouring cultures - from a distance, they might seem identical - but they are not. In this video, we explore the cultural, historical, and linguistic stories of these two very important languages of India - Odia and Bengali.

Hi. There are a few things I would like to point out in this video being a native Bengali.
1. Dariya is not a part of our daily vocab. It's mostly used by poets and lyricists. Nodi is our go to word.
2. We don't call pomegranate Anaar. It's Bedana.
3. Our CM is not our go to as well. She is not even a decent representative of us.
I was going to comment the same. Anyway, it is a very nice video
I call it bedena because my mom calls it bedena.. although dalimba is the more common term in Odisha😅😅😅
Strangely we call it Daalim in one of our Bengali dialects.
what an irony its called bedana but all it has is dana
We call it Anaar here in Bangladesh.
I'm bengali from West Bengal, I traveled Odisha many times and understood odia quite well. whenever there was a cyclone in the bay of bengal, I preferred to watch Odia news channels over bengali, because of better updates, and I never had any issue understanding.
Hum odias bahut achee hote hain❤❤
Well
Bengali, Orissa and assamese are same language. British wanted to divide these Powerful people from language perspective too. We three language have common literature named charjyapad. Even Chittagongian and Sylheti dialects of Bengali language is more different than orissha and assamese language.
This is a little knowledge about video.Talking on, Odissa without Madhusudan Das, whom Gandhi and Nehru have accepted is showing poor knowledge on Odissa. Similar the HK MAHATAV AND BIJUPATTNAIK are leaders having lot of contributions to nation.
I am Telugu but I love to see odissi dance. I like to visit Puri Jagannath temple and konark
Sanskrit had टठडढणषळ right from the beginning. From where did u get this that Sanskrit got these words from Tamil and Telugu? Pl do authentic study . Otherwise you will lose your viewers. And also Sanskrit is the mother of Telugu language and all other Indian languages
Some of the missing points:
1. Odia is considered as one of six classical language of India
2. It descends from Odra-Prakrit during 9th to 10th century AD
3. Inscription of Easter Ganga Dynasty used Old Odia(10th to 13th Century)
4. Works of Saraladas is considered as the first work of Odia literature
5. Jayadeva's Gita Gobinda
6. Upendra Bhanja's works were the milestones for modern odia.
There are older works in Odia as well, like 9-12th century Madala Panjis, 10th century AD koilis etc.
@@infinite5795 I wanted to mention that too but since I already mentioned Old Odia of Eastern Ganga time and Odra Prakrit, I thought it will be too much of History stuff instead of a comparison between two languages as the topic of video .😅

I am a bengali Guy but feel very unfortunate that slowly we are losing culture while the Odias are preserving . Yes as bengalis we are bold and we know to present our thoughts and views but preserving the culture is also boldness for which to all my Odia brothers hats off.Odias are Giga chad to me,who stick to and know and understand its roots.
you are definitely wrong .we odias are unfortunate that most of the odias specially the english medium school kids don't want to study odia. Bengalis on the other hand are known to preserve and protect their culture. Thatswhy the language has always thrived.

@@AchyutChaudharyThat’s where the debate begins my friend. Bengalis try to understand hindi, try to help an hindi speaker with even his broken hindi when they visit here but then when we go to hindi speaking states they not only don’t cooperate, they make fun of our hindi accent, our language. At least we are trying na? My MBBS batchmates who were from Haryana and Rajasthan spent 4.5 years here, never ever bothered to learn the language and then during internship used to ask us to interpret what the patient is saying. As a Bengali , can understand Odia in 5he interview, Odia is one of the classic languages spoken in India.
The strongest bond we Odias and Bengalis share is Lord Jagannath. 🙏
While traveling to Odisha from Delhi I had to change terminals and while entering the terminal gate, a proud Indian army personnel who was from West Bengal approached me for my documents. After seeing my documents, he was friendly after realizing that I was from Odisha. And he said the below which I will never forget in my life.
He said: "Mein v bhagwan Jagannath ka chela hun".
These words made me happy, then we talked for a while and I left. :)

Note-Panasa is a pure Sanskrit word as well, with Dravidian origins( Dravidian loanwords)-8:32
2) Odia has grammaticalized clusivity with its verbal conjugation, Bengali has no concept of clusivity absolutely.
3) Odia uses complentizers abundantly like Dravidian languages, such a concept doesnt exist in Bengali.
4) Odia language is unique in the Indo-aryan languages to have no schwa-deletion at all which helps Odias to easily predict the origins of many words.
5) Odia is also unique to be written in a brahmi derivative, in its initial centuries of Christian era, its called "Kalinga" Brahmi and it was used in old temple inscriptions and palm leaves/copper grants, until 12th century CE. Eastern Gangas adopted the Kutiļa or Siddhama script, by the 10th century AD, which overshadowed Kalinga Brahmi later on.
Plus, this video got me wheezing, because it felt like you wanna go more on the cultural differences, rather than the profound linguistic differences, be it grammatical or otherwise.
Of course if you are gonna go culturally,
1) Odias are vastly different from Bengali, we are purely fervent Vaishnavaites since times anon such that, it is commonly said/believed in Odisha, Shiva-Devi have to take help from Sri Jagannatha to get worshipped in Odisha( our kings have always promoted Vaishnavaism), even Durga puja is a new age phenomenon for us.
2) Odias don't keep Durga or any Mahavidya pics in their houses, because we believe that we are not well versed with Shakta worship, Shaktas requires blood sacrifice traditionally which Odias absolutely abhor( due to profound Vaishnava influence) and it might bring a sense of negativity in the house. We do have our local goddesses, but most of them have always been considered benevolent forms of lakshmi and Gaurika. Contrast to that, Hindu Bengalis are hard-core Shaktites, even today after Sri Chaitanya's influence.
3) Odias are not that keen on non-veg as Bengalis, even the voracious have at most 2 to 3 days max, when we eat fish, fowl or duck, not almost everyday like Bengalis. Odias also leave non-veg entirely in the Kartika month of the year, Bengalis dont have any such concept at all.
4) Also, Odias follow the "Hawaiian" kinship system and Bengalis( both Hindu and Muslim) follow the"Sudanese" kinship system.
5) Architecture of both is different as well, Bengalis have mostly characteristic "chala" type where the roofs are thatched, with turrets, resembling kuccha houses of rural Bengal. Odisha on the other hand, uses black stone to create Kalingan architecture or Deulaw, more boxy in shape and a single Odia temple has 3 spires/divisions traditionally, natamandapa, bhogamanadapa garbagriha. Odissi is traditionally done in these natamandapas and was born in the Nata mandapa of Jagannath temple itself.
6) Odissi, the cultural dance of Odissi is only based on Vaishnavaite themes like most Odia arts, most dances of Bengal if not all are modern or folk and have secular origins.
Hey, may I ask where you are from? & any idea on where he got the century wise evolution of scripts from? (The pic)
Ummm...Bengalis do eat Veg on Auspicious days. Everyone eats veg on the Days of his/her favourite deities. like many people don't consume non-veg along with garlic/onion on Mondays because it's Auspicious Day for Lord Shiva.
@@DRAGON_BBX Odias don't eat non-veg on Monday (for Shiva), Tuesday( for Mangala/Vimala- traditional Odia goddesses), Thursday( for laxmi), Saturday(for Shani), these all are compulsory. Some even some leave it on Sunday( for Vishnu).
@@DRAGON_BBXI think the OP wanted to highlight that most Odias refrain from eating non vegetarian food in the month of Kartika.

As a proud Bengali, I feel embarrassed that some of those Bengalis had attempted to literally erase Odia as a language. Bengalis have given their lives and shed blood to save their mothertongue. We, of all people, should know best the value of matribhasha. And extend our solidarity to every other language on the planet.

I think Bengali words are much similar to Assamese words.
Odiya is a bit different from Bengali becoz it has some influence of Sanskrit which Telugu have.
It depends on the region of Bengal too.
As a Bengali born in America, I hadn't really thought much about other regions in India as it didn't really concern me at the time. However, during covid, I met a girl online who I learned was from Orissa. She learned that I was Bengali and we both decided to send voice messages in our respective languages and it was really cool how we could both understand each other (though admittedly she understood me more than I understood her). I just thought this video was really interesting understanding more context and history between and regions and languages :D
I love how knowledgeable and well-worded your videos are. They have a sense of peace to them. One thing I have noticed however, is that you avoid mentioning Bangladesh whenever speaking of Bengal. I hope you do not hold any prejudice against the realm as in the past the entire Bengal was united regardless of the boundaries now. Want to add a little cultural tidbit here. In Bengal, totally an anecdotal evidence btw, if anybody pronounces a "sh" sound as an 's', they're usually considered to be rather "uncultured" ™, since it might betray the fact that they're not much learned , have a speech impairment or worse, God forbid, a non-B*ngali. The superimposition of the differences between the 's' sounds in the languages and in this video, the notion that is portrayed that Bengali somehow overshadows Odiya, made me ponder upon this. This isn't much acknowledged but like, sorta implicit in our culture.
