Yeah you are wrong he is playing a double foot pedal on a single bass drum... Go to 0:35 there clearly 2 pedals one hi hat and one for the double bass pedal and he has his foot on the second pedal
+Stever Wilmers I've said before that playing someone else's kit is like wearing someone else's underwear...it might do the trick, but it just don't feel right!
Reporter: "Mr. McBrain, state your profession." Nicko McBrain: "Drummer." Reporter: "Mr. McBrain, state your hobby in leisure time." Nicko McBrain: "Drumming." Reporter: "Mr. McBrain, state your first love." Nicko McBrain: "Drums, are we done here? I have to go to the park and play The Trooper on a Hello Kitty drum set. Thank you.'
And THAT, ladies and gentleman , Is why Niko is one of the best!!! Playing barefoot and a single-bass jazz setup and does more than most other drummers!! awesome!!!!
You must not have watched many drummers. George Kollias, Samus Paulicelli, and many others do way more than this in terms of technique. I'm not saying what Nicko does is bad (far from it) but don't go making ridiculous gatekeeping claims.
Nicko does stuff no matter what size the drum kit is. That is a natural thing for him to do with his sense of rythem and timing. He has a God given talent amazing my favorite drummer.
For us drummers... notice how Nicko's technique is unusual. It's not properly a heel toe, not a slide, and not everything else come in my mind. It's just a personal movement that changes a little bit even when he's playing faster or slower double strokes. Notice how he litterally Strike the Ball of the first finger of the Foot in the pedal to produce the fast gallop in the solo and then return to a much more normal Angle, straight to the pedal, in the riff. Amazing. I believe he never studied any Tech to play bassdrum, he just felt that was the right one for him and keep practicing this one.
You're right mate, he has created for his own purpose that kind of movement. And watching a video from his son you can exactly notice that he was taught by his dad, Nicko, to use just the first part of the Ball of the Foot. Infact the power of the stroke increase a Lot in this method, i'm learning this variation right now and it's great to generate exactly the same power from every single stroke of the fast doubles. It's Incredible. Ian Paice? Mmm. I don't know. But for sure he uses his own Tech. He's basically a Self taught for the first decade (or two) of himself as a drummer. And like Nicko and some drummers of the time, a truly Self taught genious. Drummers in theese days were able to litterally create styles, like today maybe, but i think even more than today.
I'm not a drummer and i know nothing about it. But what impress me compared to other drummers is Nicko seems to use his wrist more then the hole arm. He looks so relax, he makes it look so simple, like he could go on for ever. When you see someone cover his work it looks like they have a pulse of 175 and the exhaustion is near.
Yes, that's because Nicko is basically a jazz drummer. All his rudiments are the ones largely used by the big band drummers like Buddy rich, Joe Morello and some funky/jazz big names like Billy Cobham. The difference is that while Paice rely a Lot on the rebounds for the double strokes, like jazzman do, Nicko was one of the first to traduce theese rudiments in quite only single strokes roll. Like most of the rock drummers do now and then. Bonham, Appice, Powell etc. Nicko is truly the only metal drummer Who is not metal at all maybe, but his style is unique, even if the timing is not so "in time" :-) strangely, it works for him and make his drumming only more interesting...
One of the fathers of modern drumming, in one of the largest metal bands in history, loved by everyone, has no haters, is a bazillionaire, and gets any/all chicks he's ever wanted ... Yet he's underrated? Dafuq?
Mike Dandraia From Wikipedia: "He is known for not using a double bass pedal, with Bruce Dickinson commenting that he refused to use one on "Where Eagles Dare", considering them 'undrummerish'. He claims to have only ever used a double pedal once on "Face in the Sand", from Dance of Death, preferring to use a DW 5000 Accelerator single pedal. Since switching to the DW pedal in 2000, McBrain plays barefoot, stating that it gives him "more freedom.""
i remember read an interview of gregg bissonette, first david lee roth's drummer, saying that he can't play in double what nicko used to play in single...
I met Nicko once in Germany. We drank a couple beers and shot the shit about Bruce's incredible piloting skills. I'm certain he couldn't have given less of a fuck about me or my life but he asked questions and bought a couple rounds. That was 10 years ago and I'll never, ever forget it. Always loved Maiden and Nicko is a great guy. THANKS!!
You can see two future drummers becoming inspired right before your eyes in this clip(the two five year old's off to the side). You know thirty years from now they will be talking about how this day made them become drummers....or not! awesome footage!
Can you imagine how cool it must have been for this band to have Nicko just wander by and decide sit in!! What a humble man freakin awesome. And hats off to the drummer who stepped aside to watch and let him play... not like he wouldn't, it's Nicko but hey ! You know what i mean....
This song will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first song that got me into Iron Maiden. Been a fan since I was 6 and been loving it ever since.
You clearly hear modern shit, go out and find the music you want. It's out there, where drummers, underrated and hidden underground don't need gloves lol.
You just know the following conversation took place somewhere at this gig:'Yo dude the drummer sounds just like Nicko''Nah he's shit. Not fit to lick Nicko's drumsticks. I can play paradiddles, I know my shit man'You know it happened :)
That little kid standing behind Nicko is witnessing one of the true heavy metal greats in terms of “Iron Maiden” as a band & Nicko Mcbrain as one of the giants of heavy metal/hard rock drumming hands down imo!! :-) \m/ ~ CHEERS FROM Windsor,Ontario,Canada :-)
+Thorpe741 he's using the heel toe method which you can only get two notes out of, essentially the same thing as a "diddle" on a snare drum. it involves hitting the pedal first with your heel then flattening your foot to make another note with your toe using the rebound off the bass drum head. although it is a very difficult technique to master on his level, it's definitely a technique any drummer can pick up. i personally suck at it and can barely do it at all lol. but if you wanna see some ridiculous feet look up all that remains' drummer he is absolutely nastyyyy with his foot work.
William Moses you can get three hit out of it if you follow it up with a slide, heel, toe, slide. All about the control. Fairly easy to do, really hard to get it really tight.
+NickStuff more then likely that is how his set is set up and its all muscle memory and on his set there is where the cymbal is and he just does it without think about it.
maybe if someone could kick the vocal positionist in the nuts really squarely? he may go up to the right key to sing one day!! tight background vocals tho. lol
0:39 kills me every time, you can tell the vocalist gave it his all
Nearly impossible to copy Bruce lol. Now I'm laughing 😂
Not because is great to be frontman on stage, only with a mic, you should sing.
He kinda sounds like Blaze
Thanked the guy for bringing him a beer and never missed a beat. Nicko's the man. (At 1:52)
I know right! That was the baddest ass part
The monster of ONE FOOT pedal!!!!
Master Nicko !!!!
Tiago Andrade this is what happen when you spend all your money on toms
Nope, he just plays with one single foot pedal.
Yeah you are wrong he is playing a double foot pedal on a single bass drum... Go to 0:35 there clearly 2 pedals one hi hat and one for the double bass pedal and he has his foot on the second pedal
Carl Andrews ..... No man. you are wrong rsrs just watch other videos... Niko just use one pedal.
So his knee goes up but the Hi hat does not move?
Oh.... I use to have a cymbal there! 0:19
Same hahaha
TerSan actually dude, that's a trick, and a very cool one I might add
Aye, muscle memory is a big factor, I find it hard palying other peoples kits
I would have lost the stick. Always happens when I hit in the middle of nowhere
+Stever Wilmers I've said before that playing someone else's kit is like wearing someone else's underwear...it might do the trick, but it just don't feel right!
Nicko McBrain plays The Trooper, featuring Yosemite sam (with the flu) on vocals ;-)
StevensVarietyShow bro I imagined ol Yosemite 3'2 standing there singing at the top of his lungs!!
lol
Holy shit, Im laughing my ass and balls off LOL xD
StevensVarietyShow HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAH
LMAO!
That right foot technique is off the chain!
Yes if only he did double pedal
i love that he always has a huge smile on his face. just the love for music, not fame, not money, i love it
You can always tell a not only a good muso but a good hearted bloke , he thanked the guy that brought him a drink

I think that drum kit needs a cigarette after that...
Yeah and a round of shots.......... 😂
That’s pretty good.. lol!
Or two😂😂😂😂
Having fun with the fans, being very humble and what a classy act. God bless you, Nicko.
And THAT, ladies and gentleman , Is why Niko is one of the best!!! Playing barefoot and a single-bass jazz setup and does more than most other drummers!! awesome!!!!

The kit has a double pedal to be fair.
@@nebularain3338 lmao George Kollias. Nicko is at least musical
One of my fave Maiden tracks, absolutely murdered by the vocalist!!
Master at work.
0:19 that muscle memory
haha yeah also noticed that
True xd
Nicko does stuff no matter what size the drum kit is. That is a natural thing for him to do with his sense of rythem and timing. He has a God given talent amazing my favorite drummer.
I love seeing the 2 boys totally checking out the drumming! I bet they will always remember this!
Whoa, that was close, I almost forgot to watch this today
Give me a unique sound and an amazing pocket over insane chops any day. Nicko is the man.
He was on his game this day! I think he likes the sound of that little set! Aren't too many "unique" drummers like this anymore!!
Incredible the way he seems to play so effortlessly.
For us drummers... notice how Nicko's technique is unusual. It's not properly a heel toe, not a slide, and not everything else come in my mind. Yeah, that's for sure.
BFTEAM CESENA Bill Ward was a jazz drummer as well. And Paice did rely on double strokes mostly to rely on dynamics of a song (especially live).
That right foot from 2:24-2:50 is a reminder I need to practice A LOT more. Jesus.
One footed gallop,. Awesome. Get to work people!
Heel-toe!!
He was probably a huge Bonham fan growing up... drilling those 16th note triplets.
wow. thanks for pointing out. though not much a fan of his tom rolls.
Nick doesn't need a double pedal. He is the double pedal
Nicko is such a great cool guy!
One of the most underrated drummers.
Nico is underrated? He's regarded as literally one of the fathers of metal drumming.
underrated? are you insane?
One of the fathers of modern drumming, in one of the largest metal bands in history, loved by everyone, has no haters, is a bazillionaire, and gets any/all chicks he's ever wanted ... Yet he's underrated? Dafuq?
How the fuck is he underrated?, you’re thinking of someone else pal.
He's one of the best drummer humankind ever seen
First Rate drumming!
Amazing how active he is. Listened to him for years but never envisioned what it took to get his sound.
godz... what was that, open mic day?
It must’ve been the fry cook 😜
@@mosh7697 He had 2 jobs: hit 3 notes accurately and cook the food. :(
Never thought I'd hear someone worst than blaze xD
NIKO iS THE BEST
You can tell he loves what he does. Awesome to see someone so passionate.
One of the most melodic drummers of all time! Yeesssss!! 🤘🏻
0:19 Niko and his signature invisible crash cymbal
ฉาบเขามันใบเล็ก ต้องใช้ฉาบเส้นผ่านศูนย์กลาง1เมตรกะลังพอดี
Fucking awesome drummer- Nicko's so underrated! He hardly moves at all yet produces so many complex patterns and infills- more like a master class!!
And has never used a double base kit.
with a simple set, he's great!
Of course hes using 2ble bass
Mike Dandraia

Love the base drum work!
Are we going to sit here and NOT talk about his fucking ridiculous right foot on that kick pedal during the 2nd solo?
Nicko - Drum god.

@Keenque The actual video is just of Nicko. It focuses on him from an angle not often recorded on video.
At least one of us is living the dream. Go Nicko, luv ya mate :)
Never has there been a better drummer fitted for such a great band as Maiden.
Superb performance. A master at work.
Nicko toca muito... Uma lenda que técnica de bumbo

Raoul Vega obviously not his kit
It's called muscle memory
No he didn't. He had his hand there ready since it was a free beat.
Watch it again
To be honest that cymbal looks pretty fucking high
for me: one of the best rock drummers in the world, nicko mc brain
Pedal duplo incrivelmente feito com apenas um pé.
pqp
Ohhhhh the right kick during the guitar solo melts my face!!
The legend says that the bass drum pedal got pregnant...
Very nice of him to do these low key performances for the fans. He gives it all too 👍
Barefoot beast.Today's drummers need gorilla gloves, high tech shoes, anti slip grip sticks,a nurse and 4 roadies before they sit down😂😂😂😂
Alex Scott and an ankle brace 😂
Dont forget triggers
I'm 22- only thing I use out of this lot is some good gloves. all that other stuff is a bit excessive
You clearly hear modern shit, go out and find the music you want. It's out there, where drummers, underrated and hidden underground don't need gloves lol.
Nicko needs only a beer 😂😂😂
@natasdrummer No, it was a party Nicko was hosting at his restaurant for the 1 year anniversary of its opening.
