I use the black primer Rustoleum galaxy blue color shift for the shell and silver for the triggers bumpers and the piece around the Xbox button. came out almost perfect considering it was my first attempt.. for some reason only had a problem on the d-pad.

Do you sand the joysticks before you spray primer on them? Also, do they lose their silicone-like grip feeling after you apply a clear coat? Another also, do you sand the entire joystick(s) (including both the shiny and rubbery part)? Im very interested in doing this to my controller and dont want to mess up a single step. Personally, I don't like when the buttons, sticks, bumpers, and triggers don't match. I also like when the handles and the faceplate match. I did a custom woodgrain with aluminum controller. I wanted it to be modeled after the interior of my '70 Chevelle. I did a hydro dip for the woodgrain parts, but I custom made the back plate, triggers, bumpers, d-pad, sticks, and buttons from aluminum. It came together quite well after a few failures with the aluminum, but I really wanted that cold metal feel to it instead if plastic.

Very nice, I am a huge fan of Batman. If you are a fan of Street Fighter, you should totally do a purple shell with red Heaven kanji. I have an Xbox 360 version that I made as a prototype when I had no experience. It wasn't the best but it was ok for a beginner.

Awesome video but I have one question. Just as a note, I had my volume muted so I couldn't here. But what was that clear spray that you were using around 6:06?
6:06 is sanding and then primer. The Clear spray is called "Clear Coat". It protects the paint from scratches, oils in your hands, dirt, etc. It also enhances the color of the paint and really sets it off.
How well has the paint held up over time? I painted one white and after a while it began to pick up grime and dirt from my hands. Maybe I didn't let it cure enough so I was just wondering how others turned out. Also how do the triggers and thumb sticks feel after painting? I am thinking of eventually trying to make my own elite controller instead of paying Microsoft $150.
Travis Huberty It looks great. Clean hands = Clean controllers. lol. You'll have to wipe them clean from time to time as you would anything that you use often but the paint looks great and the buttons work just fine.

assymcgee1097 Yes, Primer is one of the most important steps. Spending the money and having a permanently awesome controller is better than cheaping out and having a permanently Fugly controller. If you want to spend as little money as possible and buy super cheap paint, super cheap primer and super cheap clear coat ( dont skip the clear coat either) then expect super cheap results. If you put your money into your paint you will be very happy with the end result.
Alright thanks i seen alot of videos where people dont use primer and the results are decent. But i want mine to look as nice as possible just like yours.

+trayslay718 ok i imagine the spaz is a translucent paint so in order for it to luster it needs the chrome paint. Not sure what the high gloss black is for. TH-cam Spaz stix paint and see if you can find a tutorial on it. Thats your best bet. Looks like its gonna be pretty cool though!
the cube freak me too haha...best option is to sand the bottom circle area while covering the rubbery joystick. Allowing the plastic area to be in your desired colour
+Mizan Choudhury yeah that would probably be a good idea, and I resently found out that there is aftermarket joysticks that are already pre-colored. and they sell for really cheap on ebay.
Breakdown1020 yeah thats odd. Ok first lets make sure you have clear coat made by the same company as your paint. If you do then its possible you are adding too much.

I havent had anyone tell me that their controller doesnt work right from painting anything I say to paint. Ive had the occasional " Ooops... I totally broke my controller" comments but thats due to their own error and nothing I could do to help. XxKoolKatxX it wont rub off at all if you use a clear coat. Paint rubs off because of oils in your hands. Clear coat protects against those oils as well as scratches and other things that cause paint to lose quality over time.
Eric Anderson you gotta use the same brand and same style of clear coat, Brother. If its an acrylic paint you gotta use acrylic clear coat. If you did this and you used cheap paint then that is another issue. The best thing to do is let your project dry for 24 hours and then lightly sand out the wrinkles with the 2000 grit sand paper. lightly reapply the paint so it covers up the sanded parts and then reapply with the correct clear coat.
GUYS WARNING!!!!!! I would not suggest to take off anything except the main front plate, the back plate, the battery case and the 2 side parts. I have learned it ruined the glossy affect
OH! right lol. I did another video on an xbox one controller thats on my channel. Its Fallout 4 themed and I did paint the buttons but ended up using purchased ones because the paint was too thick and it caused the buttons to stick. So if you want to paint them you should maybe do only 2 coats of a thinner spray paint. Just dont use Rustoleum american accents paint on the ABXY buttons and you should be fine.

***** Yes... I apologize. You must be using a mobile device which doenst allow the annotations. Annotations are how my menus work too. Anyway, After realizing my mistake I made an annotation with the correct sizes. I assume you bought a whole kit of torx bits so good for you! At least you had the correct bit. Small flat blade screw drivers can unscrew the controller also if thats all you have or want to save the time and money.

I'm having issues when I add the clear coating. It turns the paint purple. Am I either adding too much or am I too close?

OH! right lol. I did another video on an xbox one controller thats on my channel. Its Fallout 4 themed and I did paint the buttons but ended up using purchased ones because the paint was too thick and it caused the buttons to stick. So if you want to paint them you should maybe do only 2 coats of a thinner spray paint. Just dont use Rustoleum american accents paint on the ABXY buttons and you should be fine.

***** Yes... I apologize. You must be using a mobile device which doenst allow the annotations. Annotations are how my menus work too. Anyway, After realizing my mistake I made an annotation with the correct sizes. I assume you bought a whole kit of torx bits so good for you! At least you had the correct bit. I am sorry for that though.
