Nirvana: Nevermind 20th Anniversary [Jon Stewart interview] Part 1/7

  • Daily Show host Jon Stewart will hosting a Q&A session with the surviving members of Nirvana on a SiriusXM broadcast celebrating the 20th anniversary of their landmark album Nevermind.
Grohl and Novoselic also recalled how Nevermind felt like a dream come true. "It didn't really seem like this would happen. It was almost like a scam." That might explain the band's frugal living conditions during the recording: Nirvana's members split a room in a $70-a-night hotel. Then again, rappers Kid 'n Play were fellow residents of the Oakwood Corporate Apartments, where Grohl apparently met them at the free breakfast buffet; also among the hotel's denizens were "The Final Countdown" rockers Europe.
The interview was held in a "town hall" style, where the live studio audience and callers at home could ask questions. Other topics discussed, according to Newsday, included the use of a click track (at Vig's request, Grohl used a metronome for his drumming on "Lithium" and "Something in the Way"), alternate producer choices (along with Vig, candidates included Neil Young producer David Briggs and R.E.M./Smithereens producer Don Dixon), and, of course, Kurt Cobain's absence. "I wish Kurt was here," Novoselic said. "There's a big hole here."

This album changed my life forever , I got the tape from my friend and started playing it . When I heard Lithium I got goose bumps , and couldn't believe how fucking good this music made me . It was like taking a drug , a Nirvana drug lol
After that I started growing my hair long and dyed it blonde , and played the guitar for hours a day . Those were the days as a teenager , now we are all grown up .

The 80s was a battle where 4 piece rock bands and acoustic instruments were less common. 80s synth pop music tried to silence great indie rock acts such as REM, The Paul Collins Beat, Willie Nile, Long Ryders and The Replacements. In the 90s, mainstream alternative corporate rock threatened to silence all other music. Grunge, punk rock and indie rock pumped new life into music.

I'll never forget the first time I heard Nevermind at a party when I was 16, it was the day it came out. I already loved Bleach but Nevermind changed everything. It was one of those defining moments in music history, like the first time the world heard The Beatles or the first time they heard Led Zeppelin.. so great, so rare.

honestly only krist is the original founding member here. Dave was brought on because kurt loved his drum timing but they were from different musical branches. Kurt was more dilly and dave was always octane. They spent a month in silence thats not normal.. even joking.

I love nirvana because no matter how heavy or metallic or punk the sound could be.They had a more satiric edge, cobain never took music that seriously.A guy who could write a song like sifting then turnaround and hear something like hairspray queen. And that element makes the music more powerful than the sound garden, pearl jam and Alice in chains.

I just posted this to someone else, but here you go again:
Indie is not a style of music or a genre.. It's like saying Soft Cover Books is a genre. It's an approach to art, to do things independently. Nirvana was an indie band for most of its existence, until they switched to DGC. Kurt says many times that those "indie" days were the best of the band's career, right before they got famous.

Why are people arguing over Nirvana and AIC? I finally see people on a Nirvana video not spamming it with Justin Bieber or One Direction, and actually keeping it in the genre. Before anyone can comment I was not alive during Nirvana, I was born in 96,but I still think Nirvana and AIC are two of the greatest things that ever happened to the 90s. If we're keeping it in the genre, why argue? Not many people respect grunge for what it is.

Don't stress so much on wanting someone who sounds like Nirvana. Maybe we should open our minds and understand that if bands started sounding like those of the past that we knew, still know, and love, it would be quite a bland world. Its all about originality and music from the heart. Focus on movies for example: If the world started making every movie some sort of dramatic romance story that lasted over 3 hours, it would definitely get old at some point.

they told me to pick one. then came the sub pop singles club, and I thought, this combines all the music together.
      awesome.

agree. i, as a listener, even stopped looking out for new bands and new music because it's too frustrating. there's still some real talent and good music out there, but it feels like one has to listen to 100 mediocre/bad songs to finally find one good one. that's the bad side of the internet, music kinda watered down. i much preferred to go to the record shop, listen to 5 albums and buy 1. even if it meant that i eventually had to let the big bad record industry decide what's on the shelves :)

Same here (93') and trying to make better music for us to hear. I'm told that my style is very much original, but every now and then you can hear how I've been influenced by Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Alice in Chains. If more bands drew their influences from previous bands and made it their own, just like those bands did i.e. Nirvana, then we wouldn't have to settle for "some good new stuff".

so agree, bakers. i am a die hard nirvana fan, but i started "backwards" after kurt's death. when nevermind was released, i only had MTV access and loved in bloom: the song, the video, everything about it, but i didn't "know" the band. after kurt's suicide/murder/passing, my cousin (a pissed of nirvana fan @ kurt's death) let me play In Utero. Dave's guide clicks and Serve the Servants changed my life forever and I moved on to music. unless you have a steady drummer - use a click track.

I'm sure there are youth who haven't been swallowed up with the rest of their peers in the mindless movement their society in general seems to be in right now. But there was so much more thought and expression in the 90's, and a lot of that took its cue from the music that permeated culture. Look at how diverse top 40 radio was back then if you need proof. Mariah Carey, Soundgarden, Hootie & The Blowfish, etc. all sharing top billing at the same time.
Do you think that would happen today?

thats your opinion tho thats fine and i agree the mainstream quality may not be the same, but to me great bands arnt great because of how much radio play they have. nirvanas fame is only one of the many reasons why they are interesting to me. our views on what makes music might differ, my view on the mainstream might be a bit warped compared to yours. i find it incredibly complex, but i get if you dont understand. but to say nothing is good is deluded. they just made great music for the times

Nobody even makes their main profit off of whole albums anymore just because of the internet so idk what you mean by good albums with all the singles flying around.

Of course, but that's a media fallacy. Like Grunge. There never was "Grunge." Nirvana was just an indie band from Olympia anyhow. The media just needs a narrative. Same thing with "indie rock" today..
I just wanted to point out though, that there are tons of brilliant independent bands around these days, maintaining the spirit of bands like Nirvana/Beat Happening etc. You just have to look harder because most learned what happens when you go major (ie: The Nirvana Model of Success/Failure)..

But anyway, I thought you were referring to indie rock, not to independent things :P

The underground scene today does not compare to any previous decade. Not even close. How many truly great bands have come out in the last 10 years? Might be a few, but they're few. It's either disco-pop, post hardcore (i.e. pseudo punk rock) or pseudo post-punk indie music. Nothing around is actually good, it's all mediocre.
Do remember also that in the 90s, the good music was mainstream. All the great hard rock acts were culture defining, not culture defying. Where has that gone?
