Nirvana: Nevermind 20th Anniversary [Jon Stewart interview] Part 2/7

  • Daily Show host Jon Stewart will hosting a Q&A session with the surviving members of Nirvana on a SiriusXM broadcast celebrating the 20th anniversary of their landmark album Nevermind.
Grohl and Novoselic also recalled how Nevermind felt like a dream come true. "It didn't really seem like this would happen. It was almost like a scam." That might explain the band's frugal living conditions during the recording: Nirvana's members split a room in a $70-a-night hotel. Then again, rappers Kid 'n Play were fellow residents of the Oakwood Corporate Apartments, where Grohl apparently met them at the free breakfast buffet; also among the hotel's denizens were "The Final Countdown" rockers Europe.
The interview was held in a "town hall" style, where the live studio audience and callers at home could ask questions. Other topics discussed, according to Newsday, included the use of a click track (at Vig's request, Grohl used a metronome for his drumming on "Lithium" and "Something in the Way"), alternate producer choices (along with Vig, candidates included Neil Young producer David Briggs and R.E.M./Smithereens producer Don Dixon), and, of course, Kurt Cobain's absence. "I wish Kurt was here," Novoselic said. "There's a big hole here."

Dave wanted to record the new Foo Fighters album in his garage. But he hired Butch because (I feel) he ultimately didn't want it to sound that way...kind of like a safety net to give it SLICK appeal. If he REALLY wanted to bring the "garage sound" to "Wasting Light" AND keep it in the family, he should have hired Steve Albini.

Cool to hear Heart Shaped Box was written at the Posies rehearsal space. Another great Seattle band.

What you have to remember is that Kurt was very sensitive about being perceived as overly commercial. So, in media interviews, he could be very scornful in regards to anything that made him or his band appear or sound very commercial or mainstream. His main complaint about Nevermind was that it was "overproduced" with too many sound effects, dubbing, etc. He actually said later on that he found himself more emotionally affected listening to Nevermind than In Utero.

Ha...Krist is funny! Good sense of humor. A lot of that is lost when people look back at Nirvana but they are funny guys. Kurt was too! My Dad couldn't believe that there were only 3 guys playing on Nevermind too! Such power for a three piece n they proved it live. Great performances alright!

Great interview, Thanks for posting, but Surviving Members ? Damn, I was not aware Aaron Burckhard, Dale Crover, Dave Foster, Chad Channing & Jason Everman had all past what a cursed band

FNAZIPUNKS they say that because they only experienced success with Dave on drums. None of these guys were put in the hof either. Dave does give them credit for their contributions though.

@sowutsurpoint I suppose I was looking for that unpolished appeal/ that they were just gonna throw up a few mics and record the entire band in the same room, with little sound reinforcement. The fact that the album sounds to me as if it could have been recorded in any pro studio is revealing of the excellent skills of Butch Vig, and a testimony to the relationship he has with the band.

what's sad is that the band didn't like the released work and kurt hated it (if i recall). i believe his favourite work was on In Utero. Still - props to Vig and the Guys for shaking shit up.

Well if he hated it it was his own fault, he wrote the songs.

@touretteEd2 more to the point, I would have expected Dave to go with a producer who has more of an ear for a stripped down, live garage-band sound, rather than a producer who tends to take a more glossy, technically slick sounding approach.

@toastyplatters70 In the end they did everything they would have done in a full scale production facility. It's really probably less to do with how the album sounds, and more to do with Dave just not wanting to leave the house. ;)

This video can be improved if either the video was available or the name of the person talking was displayed. I rly get confused with voices even if they sound completely different :/ Dave was the one I could identify the best (probably cos I listen to foofighters)
