previous trip - • Overlanding Linville G...
While on my way from Knoxville back to SC I decided to wander around the hills of North Carolina. While I was exploring I found out that I was rather close to the Linville Gorge area and Old Highway 105 so I decided to check it out. This video originally had more pretty footage of the stuff I saw however it was lost due to technical difficulties. This video showcases more of the boring side of overlanding!! I show what I have for meal on the trail and how its prepared. I show how I navigate from one area to the other and more. I hope you enjoy!

you're one of the only people I can find that overlands/explores the south east, Tennessee and North Carolina and it is very helpful especially with you having a rig that isn't some crazy Baja truck that people have dumped thousands of thousands of dollars into, you show people just starting out places that are relatively easy and I don't have to worry to to much bout breaking stuff and all the hassle of that. Keep up the good work and hope to see you out here in East Tennessee sometime soon!
Glad you enjoy. Thanks for watching and thanks for getting out and exploring
I literally loled at the gas fire “dayuummm”
Hahaha. That was classic!!!!
Just bought a 4runner after watching you for months! Love the videos man.
Sweet!! Glad you enjoy
We just got a Tacoma!
Love your videos and realness!! Good to see you back at it!!
Thanks.
Thanks for sharing this list--good ideas/choices.
Glad you found it useful
I'm hoping to explore in this area this summer!!! Thanks for the video!!!
It's a great area. Lots to see
The solo overnighter trips wandering around are Awesome!! Keep em coming!
Thanks glad you enjoy
Linville gorge is my favorite place on earth.
So glad you’re back on the trail. Please keep it real !
Always
Lodge factory would be cool! Count me in!
Enjoyed. Thanks for the Stanley shout out. I’ve been looking for something similar in size.
Yeah it's perfect size definitely recommend
That clip of you lighting that fire with gas had me cracking up. That fire went all over the place lol. Glad you made a new vid keep me coming man good stuff!
Would love to see the lodge facility! Glad to see you do another video!!
Check out the upside down fire. Great, low maintenance method. Plenty of vids here on youtube.
I'll look into it
Love these videos from you, keep it up. I agree, Montreal Seasoning is awesome. I also use the Chicago Steak seasoning as well. Plus some Franks Red Hot.
Awesome, thanks so much for watching in the support. I'll have to check the Chicago seasoning out for sure.
What a Wonderful camp site you found I LOVE the waterfalls and I will be investing in some cooking utensils and seasoning kit That's pretty neat. Thanks for another good video sir Williams. Great tips😍💯💃💞💐
Glad you enjoy. The waterfalls in this area are breathtaking to say the least
Enjoyed... thanks for sharing
Glad you like it!
I haven’t added an awning simply because I think it would be a PITA. What you have is simple. The more you add, the longer it will take to setup and takedown. A room would be even worse! Had one on an RV and used it like twice. Lotsa work!
You are correct and I agree 100%. The awning is a bit of a pain but after you set it up once or twice you get the hang of it. Never had a room addition so can't speak on it. But in the rain the awning is a a game changer for sure.
Good video, thanks for sharing ✌
Glad you enjoyed
Your lucky you missed the BIG storms we had last week. Tornados and washout everywhere and serious flooding !!
Yeah that would have not been fun at all!
Let me know when you are in NC.I was there in Linville Gorge Monday.Went to Wiseman view..Beautiful sight.
Yeah I had some shots from Wiseman but all the data I shot from phone got lost
Great job makes me want to hit the road.
Do it!!!
Awesome view of Shortoff Mtn. @ 16:10
The first video I did we camped directly across from it. The whole area is beautiful
I told you awhile ago that I would be your chef on a trip..I live in Asheville brohtah!! You woulda been eating like a king!!
So your the guy that burnt the gorge. Just kidding. Your great dude. The best overlanding info on the tube
🤙 the gorge burnt??
@@SirWilliamGoes i think about 5 years ago some of Jonas ridge was on fire. Smoke blew into Charlotte for a couple days
Still some burnt trees down near the south end of old nc 105
Where is the snow?
Good to see the 4runner out of adventures again.
Just missed it!!
Thank you
It seems like when I go camping if it is'nt raining when I get where I'm going , it's because it just stopped raining or it's gonna start raing very soon. What you said is true about camping in the rain, you have to just deal with it. I once heard somewhere that "There is no such thing as inclement weather, Just improper clothing." That person may be right, kinda. I think it's possible they never camped in the rain for 5 to 10 days. I like your 4Runner's set up. I was gonna set mine up similar to yours, but my full size spare has to ride inside. It's to big for stock location, and to heavy for me to go on the roof. I'm looking forward to seeing what camping in nice weather is like, I almost don't remember what camping without a tarp is like. I also look forward to our meeting one day out on the trails.
There is some truth to that about the clothes but man it sux!! You need to get a carrier for that tire and get it outside!!
@2:45 Elvis emerges from the sani wipes container.
Oh mama!
Dude, I would have joined you! Give me a shout next time you go.
Thats my getaway place!!
Perfect spot for that. I love it up there.
You need to get a Toas-Tite man, makes all kinds of killer stuff, just be sure to get one of the old ones, not a remake.
I'm a new subscriber and I've enjoyed the content. What's the longest trek you've taken so far? Any big plans for the new year?
Longest has been 34 days. I plan on traveling full time starting this year at some point that will be by far the longest trek!
“Normally I don’t make fires”? Whachu doing out in the woods then?
Drinking and eating!!
They have a pop top roof for those Toyota’s SUVs.
Where!! I've been considering something like that. Do you have a link
I'd love to find a setup that used the sunroof for entry into a rooftop tent from inside the vehicle.
@@ReimerKeith same here
@@theMekanik yeah those folks are in Australia in the site doesn't come upI haven't found anyone in the states that does it yet but I'd be willing to work with them hand in hand and not only the production but marketing and sales of such a product as well
@@SirWilliamGoes solarrolla.com/ these guys are in Oregon USA :D
Hey, do you sleep in your suv in the summer? If so, how do you deal with the heat?
I have screens that I put around the windows and leave them down. I try not to go places where it's extremely hot at night. As long as it's around high 70s or below it's not too bad. If it gets too hot just crank up for a bit and cool down
Is there anything a little bit more challenging up there by Lenoir? Old Highway 105 is great, but not exactly the most challenging. Have you done Maple Sally or Old House Gap?
I think the road on the other side I did is called old house gap. There isn't much for challenges in this area that I know of or really anywhere that's FS roads. More of the challenges are found in parks or designated orv areas. This is more get off the beaten path and explore pretty areas.
I guess we don’t live in Colorado...
That’s fine. I’ll let you know if we find anything worth investigating!
@@eanbass3941 Most of the FS roads get real challenging after a serious thunderstorm rolls through. 105 Has been pretty rough this fall, but the FS take pretty good care since it has so many people and its a forest fire suppression road.
I was thinking this myself... I drive that road and so do a bunch of Toyota Prius 🤣. It has 2 spots that are potentially a little tricky after storms or high traffic days, but mostly fine for anyone.
Great vid bud! Good to see ya back at it 👍 need to add you a QuickSet 9281 to your gear. Makes perfect relaxing area that can be enclosed if you want
I'll have to check that out
We go camping. Let me take care of the fire and you can leave that fuel at home. 😆 You dangerous man!! 😆
Lol deal!!
Sir William, I am currently preparing to do the TAT when I retire and looking for advice/tips. I live in Lexington, SC where I think you are from. Maybe we could connect sometime in the future to discuss my plan.
For sure
@@SirWilliamGoes Let me know when you're in town and we could possibly meet up.
@@steelerfansc4155 yeah man will do
1: A cortisone shot in and of itself is not bad for you. If you get 3-4 a year, that can be problematic. But a one off shot, you’re good.
2: How can we connect with you should we ever want to join you on these trips? I’m also in NC and am always down to explore.
Good to know. Check out Facebook and Instagram as I often put info there about when I'm going places.
Its a steroid shot, they don't do cortisone shots anymore
@@popcorngJG oh really? I'm not sure that's just what the doctor told me he was giving me 🤷🏽♂️
@@SirWilliamGoes It's what we say they are called as that's what most know them as. Technically @Popcorn G is correct. Either way, getting one here and there is a non-issue, especially if they last ~6 months.
What settings do you use on Gaia?
Great question. I use gaia topo as base, mvum, and then public lands layer on top. Depending where im at i will also use nat geo maps
Give up the Sweet Baby Ray's crap from Wally World, it's loaded with sugar. Try the "Stubbs BBQ Sauce", it has no sugar added and tastes 10 times better.
I'll try it out, thanks
Hey Man isn’t the reason for a fire is so You can the smoke in Your clothes huh 😁
Your first campsite GPS showed a marker on thr north shore of Lake Tahoma, which is private property and not inside the national park. How did you end up getting permission to camp there? There are private homes where your GPS showed you were...
Not sure what you’re referring to but i assure you there are no homes where i was camping!!! There are some homes at the beginning of the trail where you get on off the highway which i may have marked but that would’ve been a marker indicating where to turn off. Also if i remember correctly that road is gated the majority of the year and i was able to catch out when it wasn’t.
After watching I see what youre talking about. I had already traveled a good bit down that road as indicated by the blue line on the map. Where i was stopped you are correct there are houses around that pond, its also the first available cell service thus the reason I stopped and started trying to plot where to go next.
