Overlanding Trails in Appalachia - From Tennessee to North Carolina
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 16 ต.ค. 2024
- I randomly came up with the idea to try to make it from Ocoee Tennessee to Asheville North Carolina on dirt roads, forest roads and other back roads. I found this to be rather challenging with all of the closed roads in the Appalachian mountains. To add to the challenges was camping in the rain. Overland travel is not always a piece of cake and this video shows just that.

@16:09 "No reason to try to grow a sack out here. In the middle of nowhere" 😂 FACTS.
🤙 for real!!!
"I'm gonna try it out and see what we got" - best quote in an overlanding video. Goes to the heart of it all
🤙🤙
What I love about this channel is seeing what can be done with a stock rig, basically. Mine is also my daily driver, so I can't afford the mpg loss that comes with larger tires, steel bumpers, etc.... Anyway, all the best. Great channel!!
Glad you enjoy. Many folks under estimate their rigs for sure.
Thanks for taking us on another adventure. Bummer you had to keep re-routing, but as a novice off-roader here, I appreciate you showing the reality of what can happen on these trails. 5:30 mark - historic Hiwassee Meeting Hall - I visited that area last summer for the first time (Reliance, TN) and tried to explore some forest roads around there, but guess what - the gates were closed on almost every one of them (and it hadn't even rained). 16:33 - think I would be freaking out at that point (seeing the ledge beyond those boulders), but you were totally chill. Your videos are encouraging me to start exploring more. Thanks!
welcome to North Carolina, the land of the gates and non-accessible national forests. where we have lots of national forest but it is ether permanently gated or closed for the season
yeah that sux!
So true.
Why is this?? Who would be best to talk to about this issue and/or the reason(s)?
@@ArbitraryLifestyle it is Nantahala national forest. And they are the ones that closed it all.
you really think they care what I have to say about it .?. I’m clearly not the only with this concern, there was lots of resistance and yet it was still done. Most of the closures are permanent and will never be reopened. Even the seasonal roads are now all just dead end road with only one way in and one way out. Some of the roads are still there and there is just a gate small section in the middle that has been closed to make sure there is only one way in amd one way out
I enjyed this video. Looks like it was an awsome adventure. Your skills at making videos are improving with every episode. Keep up the great work! Don't give up. See ya out on the trails.
Thanks man.
anyone tearing up,trashing, or littering on the trails are probably not watching your vids. Great as always. Damn you nature!
Hopefully. I think sometimes people don't realize they are doing harm when they do things like go off trail or spin up mud or play in the ruts. The folks leaving trash I doubt watch for sure.
Isn't it just absolutely crazy that humans cut off entire swaths of our mother earth to each other. What a lost society. On a better note...Great video! Your patience and diligence was a great teacher for me in this video. I would have gotten bent out of shape and ruined my adventure with anger and frustration after hitting all of the dead ends. Thanks man.
That is a valid point about cutting off parts if earth. Ive often considered the exact same thing. Its right next to the thought of why are we the only species that pays to be here?
name this episode: "Sir William finds every closed gate in the appalachian"
Right!!!
Bruh... when you get close to Asheville EVERY FUCKING GATE IS CLOSED. I don't know why, but that area has ruined many a trips for me.
Chainsaw and loopers are essential. I love the 20v dewalt chainsaw. Put a 16” Oregon bar on it with a 9ah Dewalt battery and that thing can put in some work.
Pucker Factor!!! Ocoee is my back yard! found your video looking for good overlanding spots in the south east! Recognized those Tellico trails!
Great instructions for the use of the transmission for speed control on decents. I've found that brake usage always causes the front suspension to compress, raising the rear end. Four tires on the ground is good.
Great job. That was a true adventure.
Pictures and video never show what trails are really like. Great video.
Dude, I was under the impression that you need a Titanium Nut Warmer in order to be a real Overlander!
Brother I'm impressed by your resilience, also you showed that you don't need a expensively build rig or fancy equipment to go explore and overland, of course it helps that you have one of the best 4x4 on the market lol you don't need a group either, just the will to go out and see nature! Subscribed
Thanks. Yeah man fancy is nice but not necessary
ALWAYS carry a saw of some sort, even if it's just a manual one. I recommend Silky brand, but I personally carry an Echo 2511T ANYtime I go off roading.
Yeah I have a silky but there’s some stuff you just not gonna attempt without the correct tools or size of tool.
it is...........what it is. keep up the great work Sir W.
Indeed!! Thanks.
Awesome video. I would love to do those trails soon!
I grew up with Wampler's Sausage, having been from the Loudon/Lenoir City area. Good stuff!! Thanks for the videos. I always enjoy em!
It's great sausage says so right on the package!!!! It actually was good! Glad you enjoyed.
Did the Rainbow Trail through the Sangre De Cristo Mtns. Sixty miles on the CanAm had to clear out 5 trees, definitely got our exercise in.
Sounds like it but sounds fun
Another awesome vid dude I know fallen trees can be a pain but it's all part of the adventure. And I'm glad your doing more and more outside vehicle footage instead of just go pro inside view.
Yeah part of the adventure. I've been trying, sure does take alot more time.
Yeah keep it reaL. looks like a mostly stock rig. great to see what it can do and the wise choices you make with it and where you go...
Thanks for following along!!
Nice video, thanks for sharing 👍
I have to assume the roads are closed due to all the rain in the area, fallen trees and possible Mudslide. This seems like a very frustrating trip, but you got out there and didnt die! Good on you for having the patience to keep pushing brother. See you on the Trails some time this summer. By the way, I got the Cheap Ebay Awning and changed the arms and legs with the ARB arms and Legs and it has worked great for 8 months. I have about $150 invested in it.
Nice!! That's probably a better option for real
I got my ARB 2000 awning for $240 on Amazon. It's been one of the most useful purchases on my rig so far.
Yeah if I get one I want to get the little room attachment to I think that's what makes it over 500
@@SirWilliamGoes it would be money well spent, a buddy has the ARB with the room attachment and it goes up fast and easy. I have the front runner awning but no need for the room since I also have the front runner roof top tent.
I couldn't stop laughing and not because of your travesties but because this just happened to me at Talladega national forest. I gave up and got a airbnb lol. Then I went back to the trails. Rain and more rain and closed gates.
Lol air bnb would have been great!!! These damn closed gates are wild right!!
Really enjoyed the video. Headed down there myself here soon. Got a new subscriber!
Awesome glad you enjoyed and welcome!! You'll love the area Iv know I do!!
Heading around this area next week. I won't be spending too much time there but will definitely check it out. Do the USDA road closure alerts (mainly for those gated trails) help? I know there isn't much reliable info you could get for fallen trees in real time. Also, what was your set up for getting reliable navigation off the grid?
I use Gaia for navigation. Here is a link and discount bit.ly/2I1McCG
good overlanding in the Francis Marion? looking for some weekend missions for the family.
I have'nt been too much just camped there along the way one time. From what I hear there is tons of good trails to explore
Bolt cutters should be in every trail bag!
Really enjoyed the video. Do you often go on solo overlanding/camping trips?
I want to get a 4runner and I've been thinking about taking solo trips. Non of my family and friends IRL are into such things.
Yeah I do a lot of solo trips as you can see on the channel. I like the solo ones just as much as the ones with friends.
I’ve been thinking about getting a chainsaw for use on trails and I’m leaning towards a battery powered model. Mainly because it wouldn’t be used that frequently, and you avoid having to carry the fuel/oil mix necessary for a gas operated model.
Battery power is for twigs and branches, better get a gas one
Yeah I have seen those and thought about them too
@@popcorngJG Not strictly true. I live in the boonies & I've hacked down small trees with them, say 6" or so. The problem with them for overlanding would be that the batteries don't last long at all: you take down one 6" diameter tree, that battery is DONE, and not being very techy I haven't found a way to charge them in the truck. The spare batteries seem to go dead even when they're not being used, and they take a long time to charge back up. "Long time" as in ALL of an overnight sleep. I was like Jethronius & thought I'd get one to keep in my car, since I live in the vicinity of Chattanooga & yes, trees come down here constantly from the rain. Unfortunately they just don't work for that. I wish they did, b/c I'm disabled & have trouble pulling the starter on a gas one. 😞 That being said, with 2 freshly charged batteries I think mine would have handled the trees in the video. You just hve to be strategic in how you do it.
I live in Asheville I can't tell you how much it irritates me with all the rds they close hurricane Creek is pretty much my only off-road option or I just drive 40 east and go to brown mtn and 105.
Bring a silky saw to deal with small trees. They need a way for users to make notations to the gps maps to let people know what is closed down. Welcome to NC, my home.
The silky is my go to, I love it.
nice channel, and video! Liked and subscribed.
Thanks, glad to have you follow along!
Great excursion! Love the fact that you didn't let "a little bit of rain" stop you. Keep them coming. BTW, what map software are you using?
I use back country navigator and Gaia, i tend to use Backcountry navigator more because I like the accuterra maps
@@SirWilliamGoes Thanks!
@@SirWilliamGoesare you using free version? There is one for $14.99

Just curious what GPX files you used for this trip and if available, where can get them.
I made my own route with the map
But some pvc pipe and tarps. Make your own portable awning.
great video! what gps program where u running on the samsung tablet? do u need cell service for it?
I was using back country navigator then but have since switched to a far better program called Gaia. With the premium version you can download maps for offline use. Here’s a discount www.gaiagps.com/discounts/?fp_ref=william25
@@SirWilliamGoes cool thank you : )
Sir William great video and it has gave me some ideas for trails to check out. My friends and I are riding up to Coker Creek, Tellico area this weekend. Can you advise me the name of the road/trail at 12:00 of the video that you took from North River Rd to Indian Boundary Rd/Cherolala Skyway. I cant find it on Google maps. Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks for watching. Not sure where just kinda came across it.
Wondering what tablet and phone mount you are using.
Tablet holder. amzn.to/2F9PbGl
The phone is a mix of different things pieced together from other broken mounts.
Mmm. Wamplers sausage in the bush. BTW, its pronounced wohmpler lol
Just curious if you ever got an “official” answer as to why lots of gates get closed?
No!! Never got a call back. That reminds me I need to try again!!
I need "it is what it is" on some merch soon
I gotchu! Coming soon
Thanks for the videos...DeWalt makes a great battery powered chainsaw. I use mine all the time!
I'll check that out
Hey it looked tough but You the Man nice Hey get an electric saw You don’t want to be smelling the gas fumes.🐟🐟🎣🎣
Yeah I think that's what I'm going to do. Tho if it weren't for the trees I wouldn't have found those bad ass trails!!!
Hi bro, what navigation gadget you use on your adventure. New subscriber here. Thanks!
I use Gaia bit.ly/2I1McCG
A lot of the reason trails are closed in the winter time is due to the freeze thaw cycle. It causes the soil on the roads to be softer than normal and makes it really easy to destroy the roads even when your taking your time. If they didn't close them during the winter cycle then they would all be closed due to damage and erosion.
Interesting makes sense in high elevation I guess.
Dude you know you had fun ....lol.
Always
Wamplers Wamplers it's great sausage made right here in Tennessee. Don't say sausage; just say Wampler's for the best in quality.
That was a wolf spider. Harmless
Dude, I've been in Tenn for a few months guess what's all I eat? Whamplers!!!! It's great sausage,!!!
@@SirWilliamGoes th-cam.com/video/WthicQqKYBg/w-d-xo.html
Can you not go through the gates if they are not locked?
These were locked
Unreal
Dude, you need to get ya some Neese's sausage. Made in Greensboro
Yeah man gonna have to try it.
Is there a way to find out why the trail roads are closed? Or a schedule of when they are open/closed.
A lot of them close in winter or when there is excess rain.... We have had a lot of rain this winter... The government shutdown backed up the road clearing also
They try to update the websites from time to time that's the easiest way
You can always check in at ranger/sheriff stations. Anywhere they do search and rescue there's a good amount of people they can radio happy to pass along road conditions
I talked to the Pisgah Ranger.. The rain, government shutdown has caused the biggest reasons for the closures
Yeah sounds about right
pop up tent will go over the whole rig bro
People who rely on their brakes down a steep mountain will end up destroying their breaks and finding themselves jumping out of their vehicle that they lost control of and is about to veer off the side.
You don't need no speed sensor on the trails...
What GPS software are you running?
Gaia Premium, here is a discount code for you Gaia : bit.ly/2I1McCG
You sir must be a glutton for punishment. :) seems somewhere there would be within our efficient and organized “gubment”, maybe ? someone, somewhere could say --- hey, there’s a BUNCH of road closings in this “whole” area “right now cus of all the rain,,,, or whatever. I dunno..... I probably woulda self destructed & done something real stoopid along the way !!!!!! LOL-cool vid bro.
They close roads for all sorts of reasons and are pretty lax about updating the closures especially when they can't figure out if they are working or not due to funding. I plan on talking with the NFS one day to discuss this very topic
Sir William Goes- Go sic em’ Sir, but yeah I can see allot of peeps / tourists that aren’t prepared, at all, getting lost in “dem thar hills” and then the State’s employees have to bring out the dogs & every body gets paid overtime. (Except the local wheelers that enjoy doing good deeds & wheeling. 👍🇺🇸
Do you have some sort of signal booster for your tablet?
No it runs offline with Gaia www.gaiagps.com/discounts/?fp_ref=william25 there are also some free apps I like the options with Gaia.
I carry an 18 volt Milwaukee chainsaw with me when I hit the trials, 2 good batteries and it will will cut all day
I've heard about the DeWalt being real good too
@@SirWilliamGoes
Go with Milwaukee.
@Glenn Holcomb really!!
@Glenn Holcomb dang that's the first I've heard of any bad
Is it really considered camping if you're parked and sleeping in your car? I don't think anyone would care or notice during the off season.
Kinda how I look at it too. This is one of the primary reasons I love my setup is because I have the ability to do just that.
cool
Check out my DIY awning videos. Don't have a build video, but you should be able to figure it out from the walk-arounds. I need to do a new one because I just recently rebuilt it with new hinges.
Nice will do.
i was gonna let ya know, lots of work and good places to live around Columbia and spring hill Tennessee...wish i had the gps tracks you got there. do you have a place i could download them tracks from? was just wondering man, thanks
No tracks I just marked dots on roads I had found. But didn't save the follow me route. Had to clear for my trip to Death Valley
@@SirWilliamGoes maybe keep those tracks and sell them online? sort of like guthooks or the guy that made the TAT
@@jrbroadway0077 Yeah I thought about saving them and making them available to patreons
@@SirWilliamGoes thats a great idea. im starting to get into the scene and to me the hardest part is finding trails and camp sites off the beaten path. I would definitely pay for a route specially from a TH-cam ive watched go down the route. Great videos you got a new sub!
How many miles did you travel ?
I wanna say it was around 700+ in total but I went to Chattanooga first then back
Hey brother Im from Asheville!! I would love to ride a trail with ya, Hurricane, whatever.... Im also a chef so the food would be better ; )
Nice!! I'm recording for my series Camp Cookin' bring your favorite trail recipe
Did you end up in Chattanooga? That’s where I am
No I ended up homeless!!! Sorta!!! We travel full time now!
Do you have the map files for these trails?
I don't, typically I just pick an area and venture through the roads
5:29 Reliance, TN :)
J5?
Way too nice of a Toyota to be tree beating on the trail!
It was made for this!!
It's not a pavement queen! It's a bonifide yota! King of the trails...4wd Action in Australia will show just what these rigs will do!
Only issue with the chainsaw idea, the Feds have a chainsaw class they require you to take before you can use one in the national forests.
Wow I had no idea I'll have to look into that.
that location is 10 minutes from my house..
Beautiful area
Why so many ads?!?
TH-cam auto places them
I got my awning from Amazon for $120
Great decision!!
I thought you had a Chevy Colorado
I do. And the 4runner
Ok good, so let’s see more of it lol lol
@@georges4562 don't worry you will!! Starting to get it set up now, a video with it will be out within about a month

Gotta be!!
