  • Snake Pass is located in the Peak District National Park in the United Kingdom. It runs between Glossop in Derbyshire to Ladybower Reservoir in Derbyshire and then continues to Sheffield in Yorkshire. The name Snake was adopted due to the winding and serpentine-like nature of the road as it crosses the hills and moorlands of the Peak District.
I rode my motorcycle along the road on a wet and windy day in February 2024. The weather conditions where challenging, however in good conditions you could easily get carried away and caught out by some of the bends as they tighten up. The road can be challenging and offers an exhilarating ride in the beautiful landscape of the Peak District.
Snake Pass is 26 miles (42km) and rises to a height of 512m (1,679ft) above sea level and although there are no physical speed camera's it is widely know that police use unmarked cars and mobile camera units.
You should absolutely ride Snake Pass and it should be on every Bikers bucket list.

Hi Lad . Liked and subscribed.. Just realised , not done the Snake pass since 1985.. Happier days when visiting Holmfirth to see Nora Batty about some wrinkly stockings she sold me on e-bay :))). Checking the weather and next weekend looks like there will be hole in the rain clouds.. Thanks for the beautiful vlog and some nice off bike footage as you journey on to yonder hills .

I walked it in around 1975. We were three school lads from London. There was a blizzard, and the snow was 2 feet deep in places. When we reached the Pennine Way, there was a BBC van filming the blizzard. They gave us a cup of tea! Then we trailed down to Glossop for fish and chips before heading up to Crowden and a freezing cold Youth Hostel! Those were the days.....

Nice video 👍 The roads reputation has little to do with the road and more to do with the questionable driving of some along the route. It's a great road, ride, enjoy, and be safe.

Going to the Snake pass via Buxton is a very long way round. You need to go to Glossop and start from there, or go to Sheffield to get to the eastern end.. I should know having lived at the Manchester end since childhood and driven over the Snake countless times to go walking or rock climbing in the Peak District since the 1960´s. Never mind your satnav, get a map out and get yourself orientated and acquainted with the lie of the land. Erwood reservoir and the Cat and Fiddle are miles from the Snake with a good chunk of high moorland in between.

Hi, I lived at the start of the Snake Pass in Glossop for over 15 years. A great road to ride on. But just be aware of the blind left hand bends. Especially just past the Snake Pass Inn when going towards Sheffield. Same coming the other way but righthanders instead. That is if it is still open. Moved away nearly 20 years ago. Still it was bags of fun on a sunny day as long as you take care and do not try to do it going hell for leather. You might find hell sooner than you would like if you do. It is a pity that you did it in the rain as the road is definitely not at its best in the rain. It is also a pity that you did not mention that from Derwent Reservoir you can turn right and go to Castleton(Where the Blue John mines are), Edale and Hathersage where it was reputed that Little John came from. All really nice places to visit on a sunny day.

You should have gone over the Strines , mortimer road then over half of the woodhead and back across the snake or vice verse 😊

  • @stephenrobbins9901

Thanks for the video, look forward to seeing more😊😊😊

I've been riding the Snake for over 40 years and never had any real issues TBH. It was a much better run back then before the double white lines appeared everywhere and was an absolute blast on a decent sports bike. I've seen way more trashed cars up there over the years than bikes. In recent years it's been plagued with landslips resulting in closures and roadworks. The drop down into Glossop is still one of my favourite rides these days.👍 Occasionally the plod have a radar patrol down on the long stretch alongside Ladybower.

Fantastic, really enjoyed the video and enjoyed accompanying you on the ride! I’ve chalked Snake Pass up for a return visit this year after watching your video.

  • @thepeakybiker

Everyone should ride snake pass but it’s nothing special real but a must

  • @stevedunn5546

I've ridden it a couple of hundred times on various bikes no problem and very enjoyable only live down the road from Glossop in Holmfirth. Doing Snake pass and the strines is a good ride out.

  • @richandiben

    Good stuff mate. Subbed 👍

  • @mickwilkinson87

I really enjoyed that brings back a lot of fond memories, my 69bonny was a dream to ride over it thanks for the memories, please go carful ❤

  • @leeholden8658

A537 which you mention from Macclesfield to Buxton is challenging, especially for a new driver. my wife hated it 😂 Especially when vehicles cut the corners

  • @Banditmanuk

Of course you should. I prefer a warm dry day very early in the morning then call by the Glossop Café for a breakfast. All twisty roads that attract bikes can be dangerous and I've seen some absolute idiots riding up in the Peaks that inevitably contribute to the statistics. The road in it's self isn't dangerous.

  • @GWAYGWAY1

I drove up there in my Motorhome. What I noticed was the bike safety posters and speed cameras on yellow poles along with the 50 mph limits.

  • @Bob-ts2tu

i've done snake pass from glossop towards sheffield quite a few times, and usually then cut back northerly towards penistone just after ladybower, and as with all roads snake pass is only as dangerous as you make it. It's ok for a main road i suppose, but yeah, do it at least once to find out what the fuss aint about, but when in the peaks you can find many more roads you'll enjoy more im sure. GL

  • @micla6221

Looks like an excellent place to ride.

  • @monnerbiker

Nice vid mate, just subbed 👍
