    This was really a test run to see if the idea would work. The thought was to roast a whole chicken horizontally in a Zebra billy can bush pot over the Folding Firebox 5" Campstove, slowly rotating the pot as to cook it evenly with a pan below to catch the drippings for gravy. I bought some instant mashed potatoes, which I cooked over the Folding Firebox 3" Gen2 Nano. The meal turned out darn good! The chicken was moist and tender, I think the smallness of the oven was a good thing!
    I fueled the Firebox with a small Swedish Fire Torch which provided heat for well over an hour without the need to even think about my fire.
    The meal turned out great! Winner, winner chicken dinner! Great fun outdoor cooking!
    Thanks for watching, please like, share and comment on this video.

    I've been cooking for 40 years and I don't think I could have done any better in my kitchen than you did in nature on your stoves, Steve. Especially that gravy, which you nailed!
    I just ordered my 16mm Billy pot, bag and coffee grinder yesterday, so I am looking forward to doing more/finer cooking on my Fireboxes soon as well!

    I enjoy watching the metamorphosis of the chicken cooking.
    I've been trying to go in chronological order with the videos.
    Your scientific method of discovery, is the bomb.
    Hopefully this month of June 2021 you will have the folding tables in I'm looking forward to that. Thank you so much for what you do and have a great day.

      We are hoping to have that table the end of June but it all depends on the manufacturer, they have had to push back that date a time or two. Thank you as usual for the kind words, it is appreciated.

    Steve, you amaze me with the continued and seemingly never ending cooking options with the zebra pots. I can't wait to fire up my stove and try out my 16 zebra for our Sunday dinner! one thing I love about the firebox is even if your not camping you can use the firebox in the backyard and not heat up your kitchen on these hot Texas Summer days :o)

    Well, it was a year ago when I first subbed to your channel after been amazed at cooking a chicken in a Zebra. You asked me to let you know how I got on doing the same. A year later, it happened last night !!. Wow, absolutely fantastic. Used the Trangia burner in the Trangia Triangle along with the simmer ring right from the start. The chicken was taken out fully cooked after 1 hour 20 minutes, and even then it was a little overcooked for my liking at 82 degrees C internal temp. I used English methelated spirits (like the US Heet) and only used 1.5 burners worth of fuel. Now that amazed me again considering you used 8 oz. Thanks again for the inspiration, will be doing it again many times into the future. Cheers, Neil.

    Steve! I got everything I had ordered from you guys - the GSI folding table, the Oli pot holder, the Zebra 16cm pot with the steel clips, the Gen 2 Nano, and the adjustable fire grate for my Original Firebox! Thanks! So I roasted not only a whole roaster chicken, but I also tried it with a pair of Cornish game hens. They all came out wonderful! I wanted to share a couple things with you...
    For the chicken, I used half of a quartered onion, and 1 large celery stalk cut in thirds. I salted and peppered the chicken inside and out, then stuffed the cavity with the onion and celery. I coated the bird with olive oil, as well as the inside of the bush pot. I used Match Light coals in the Firebox (the torch method doesn't work up here at altitude). Came out perfect!
    For the game hens, I used a generous coating of Old Bay seasoning inside and out. Olive oil on the outsides of the birds and insides of the pot. Was incredible!
    I caught all the drippings with the bush pot's pan like you did, but I added butter and flour over low heat from the Gen 2 Nano, using alcohol for fuel. Kept stirring and it came out delicious in both instances.
    So I wanted to ask you if you might consider making high-altitude versions of both of your stoves? Both of them have trouble with airflow up here at 9,800 feet above sea level. There's just so much less oxygen in the air, that there isn't enough airflow from the holes to get a torch burning at all. And most of the camping that I do is at around 10,000 feet above sea level. I'm sure I'm not alone in this. Even the Gen 2 Nano, using 99% isopropyl will burn orange and sooty because it doesn't have sufficient airflow to feed the flames up here. They work great when I come down to around 6,000 feet or so - but up here, they are struggling to stay lit with the amount of airflow the holes currently feed.
    Thanks for everything!
    BLESSINGS!
    Sam

    • @fireboxstove
      @fireboxstove  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ace1usmc Wow! Sounds awesome! Did you take some pictures?
      As for the air flow question, The Nano can run with the Fire Grate up, the sticks being fed through the sides support the fire but all ash and coals drop allowing free air flow. As for the Firebox I realized the need for a center hole in the Fire Grate, just for running the Fire Torch pre-fuel method. Watch for that in the future.
      I've never had good luck with Iso. I stick with ethanol or methanol.
      Thanks so much!

    awesome, zebra pot has been on my list for awhile, but I agree, that waiting was worth it, because it looks like those clips are a added bonus. try wrapping your chicken in aluminum next time, and you can do it without the lid, it will be like cooking coffee can chicken. if I had a zebra pot I would show you myself how to do it.

    How do you deal with the pot cleaning and care?

    • @fireboxstove
      @fireboxstove  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Long Thanks David, I'm actually quite new to this Zebra pot method, but what I've learned so far is to be careful to only get the pot as hot as needed, too much heat can warp the pot and heat will lessen the stainless steel's ability to resist corrosion so I clean my pot with a maroon Scotch Bright and leave a light coat of oil on it to keep it nice between uses.

    If you add some of your dehydrated potatoes to the gravy, it will help thicken it.just dont over add or it wont taste right

    I forgot to ask you Steve, what was the weight of the chicken you used? Total cooking time? Thank you!

    • @fireboxstove
      @fireboxstove  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paul Gibson I don't know the weight, I chose the smallest one thinking it might be a tight fit, which it wasn't. And cooking time was about an hour and twenty minutes. I didn't time it exactly. Sorry for the lack of info, I was shooting from the hip on this one.

      Generally, I use what I can find. I prefer Mapel, Juniper or Scrub Oak. We don't have the real good Oak varieties here.
