It sounds to me like you would prefer the tomatoes that are starting to color a bit in the middle, that's when they start to taste sour. The completely green ones won't taste sour. It's funny, I prefer the completely green ones, I don't like the sour taste of the ones starting to color. I prefer when they taste more like fried zucchini. To each their own I guess.
You can use food products PAST the expiration date. It’s actually a “freshest by” date.
I find flour-type products taste stale after the best-before date, but I totally agree with everything else.

That’s what my daughter says also.
Before you give up on fried green tomatoes try salting and pepper before you batter
I live in upstate South Carolina, I was without power for 5 days and also no internet or phone service. My family and I were lucky to find a condo near the beach to stay in. The first thing I did was watch this video. You calm me down and I always feel peaceful after watching you. Thank you for sending positive thoughts our way. There are whole small towns that are just gone. Know that your smile and positivity make a huge impact on people.
Yummy love fried green tomatoes
Not only did the hurricane cause so many problems, dock workers went on strike. Its definitely going to take time to recover.
I grew up on the farm, I'm 68 now and we always made fried green tomatoes at the end of the season. Just dip in flour seasoned with salt, pepper and whatever seasoning you like. Fry till golden brown.
I’m from Kentucky and fried green tomatoes are a favorite food every year. I’m fifty one years old and I was raised on them since I was little, it’s a staple food in the South, I know that, lol, they’re delicious!
"Fried Green Tomatoes" is also my favourite movie and have watched it soooo many times. I'm on the other side of Canada (New Brunswick) visited your beautiful province in 2022 and it was our favourite trip ever. Love your channel!
I don’t know if you folks are hunters but if you are and can get moose bones, make broth. It’s so rich and yummy!
Love fried green tomatoes. Grew up eating them. I marinate them before breading and frying them.
What do you marinate them in?
You might try salting the sliced green tomatoes and letting them sit to add flavor and remove moisture before coating and cooking.
My grandmother made fried green tomatoes and she would salt and pepper them before she breaded them and she would use a little bacon grease with the regular oil and then as soon as she pulled them out of the grease she would lightly salt them. But I also grew up in the south.
I love fried green tomatoes 🤤
Salt and pepper the tomatoes before you batter them
I made a green tomato pie. Basically you make it just like you would an apple pie. Cut the green tomatoes in wedges use all the same apple pie spices and it’s delicious.
I've only had fried green tomatoes one time and I liked them, but they were fried in bacon grease. That may have been why I liked them!
Yum bacon grease. Will try
I salt and pepper my GT. Coat it in a dry cornmeal and fry until crispy. YUM, YUM
Hi Chelsea, I was born in Kentucky but raised in Texas, I am 57 and have been raised on fried green tomatoes. My mama taught me when I was really young to “season” my tomatoes well, as well as my cornmeal/flour mixture! We like a little kick to ours so I use some Tony Chacheres creole seasoning on my tomatoes and in my cornmeal/flour mixture and then we dip them in ranch dressing for eating! So,so good 😊
Your sunflower decoration is really cute.
We love fried green tomatoes and did not grow up with them. We always serve them with a dipping sauce. Our preferred sauce is remoulade, but ranch and honey mustard work as well…..❤
I must have seen the Fried Green Tomato movie a million times. I still have the DVD. (Now I want to watch it again)
A hint from this southern gal. If you rest your tomatoes after you batter them then fry them you get the most amazing crust! Let them rest for about 10 minutes or so. Just until they get gummy. Also if you're left with a bunch of green tomatoes at the end of the season you can slice them and can them. Then you have them throughout the winter for something warm and comforting.
For your fried green tomatoes, make your own batter and put whatever herbs and seasonings you like in it. Also some people make a gravy to go with it.
Fried green tomatoes were my forever 29 daughters absolute favorite side dish. Actually she loved any and all vegetables and fruits but she could not wait for the first fried green tomatoes every year
I'm in North Dakota and have made fried green tomatoes from recipes I found on line. They're divine! My mom used to also make a pie from them that tasted exactly like an apple pie. It was delicious. Don't give up on the green tomatoes.
I grew up with fried half green tomatoes. Mix Flour with plenty of salt and pepper but no liquid. Coat the slices and fry in half bacon grease and half crisco. Mom would chop the ends of the tomatoes into pieces and stir them into the remaining flour and then use that mixture with some milk to make a milk gravy with whatever was left in the pan. To serve, put a slice of white bread on a plate. Several slices of tomato on the bread and cover it in the cream gravy. More pepper. We always had this with corn on the cob.
Green tomatoes fried is a favorite of ours we grew up eating them. I'm sure you're getting ready for a break from canning. Thank you for sharing.
Its also great to can sliced green tomatoes for the winter so that you can have fried green tomatoes during the winter months.
I crave Fried Green Tomatoes constantly. I grew up with them and they are just a taste that I crave. My mom used to make something called 6-hour green beans. She would brown up a ton of Salt pork, then fill a large pan with fresh snapped beans and slow cook for 6 hours. Now that I am older and have grown green beans I realize that it was the end of the season green beans many that had grown too large and that is why they cook like that. Plus it is just southern Louisiana cooking. Try the green tomatoes again, salt and pepper them. egg wash them and toss in flour or corn meal. then fry them. You already know the not-to-hot pan hehe.
Becky from @acrehomestead cans tomato juice and uses it in rice and dehydrates it and turns it in to tomato powder.🍅
I like the fried green tomatoes breaded as opposed to battered. Serve with sour cream. They taste like deep fried zucchini. Cover with flour, then egg wash and panko breading and deep fry. Yum yum
Fried green tomatoes is my favorite movie too ! It's funny I never tried them until I met my husband 23 years ago now I look forward to making them every year 💚🍅
I think you're right about feeling differently about a dish because you were raised eating it. When my Granny made fried green tomatoes she did them completely differently than what I watched you make, and that is the only way I like to eat them now, so don't give up on green tomatoes just yet! Dice them in large chunks along with some chopped onion and even some minced garlic. (If she had squash or zucchini she would add chunks of that also.) Mix a half and half mixture of cornmeal and flour and toss the tomatoes and onions in that (without dredging them in any liquid) before you put them in a hot skillet with the bottom barely covered in lard. Salt and pepper to taste and don't start turning the food in the skillet until the bottom gets a good brown crust. Make sure to eat hot and fresh as soon as they're finished cooking! I hope you try this and let us know if you like it!
Yay!! You have the whistle stop cafe mix!!! That original cafe is from very close to where I live about 50 miles away! It’s delicious mix and makes wonderful fried green tomatoes! And that’s one of my favorite movies as well! I hope you like the mix! And thank you for thinking of the south! All prayers are needed! And yes, it’s a southern thing and I’ve grown up eating them but I use my own recipe for cooking them and I make a sauce that goes great with them call remoulade sauce.
I was raised on Fried Green tomatoes but it was with egg bath and seasoned flour mixture (no cornmeal), topped with sour cream
I totally agree with you on that. I love canned green beans but I have never had a fried green tomato but my husband loves them.
I love fried green tomatoes. Living in the South all my life and my mom being from Louisiana, I grew up eating them with a romaloude sauce. Use all cornmeal or a mixture of cornmeal and flour to coat them (with egg, of course). Season the batter well with salt and pepper.
You can cube the green tomatoes for faster cooking time. They are nice right out of the pan dipped in a thick Ranch style dressing.
Beautiful french onion , I also like keeping some flavor profiles simple for lots of versatile uses
I did grow up having fried green tomatoes.. love them.. also love pickled green tomatoes.. I can plain green tomatoes so I can have them fried in the winter..
Glad you are feeling better
I love fried green tomatoes. I first had them in Charleston, SC and they were delicious!
Watching TH-cam southern cooking videos I made them myself this summer. The recipes is simple, coat your sliced tomatoes in buttermilk, then dredge in self rising flour along with salt and pepper and fry. They turned out really well and you can use a dipping sauce with them also.
I always add a slight sprinkle of sugar on the tomato before battering. You can use brown or granulated.
When you slice your green tomatoes put them on a paper towel and salt them on both sides and let sit for 15 min before breading them. I love to dip mine in ranch.
I grew up having fried green tomatoes and they aren’t my favorite as is but my most favorite thing to have is a fried green tomato BLT on toast with pimento cheese. So yummy!
All you need for fried green tomatoes is flour eggs and corn meal. This is a great way to make it. Just flour your tomato and dip in eggs and then corn meal
Best fried green tomatoes for you.
Fried green tomato BLTs with a remoulade sauce are the bomb! The sauce is good on crab cakes, too.
I can't wait to.hear how you liked them. They are one of my favorites in the summertime. I eat them as they come out of the skillet. Yummy.
I’ve never had fried green tomatoes but I loved the movie too! I love French onion soup !
When I make my fried green matos we soak the tomato slices in some buttermilk with seasoning first, then we batter them.
Your videos are the greatest. I feel like I'm in your kitchen. Thanks for sharing🥰🥰
We’re not fussy about fried green tomatoes, but we do love fried ripe tomatoes. We just coat them with a little flour with garlic salt and pepper in the mix. Hugs
❤❤❤ I salt then pat dry my green tomatoes (no blush is best). I dip in egg, then saltines broken down before frying... like I do with eggplant. And yes, I grew up with fried veggies.
I love them. You do need to season them…salt pepper garlic onion powder paprika then dip in batter, fry and make a remoulade or use ketchup as a dip. However, with the seasoning you really don’t need a dip. 😊
Chelsea I’m also Canadian a sixth generation Canadian and I’ve never tried a fried green tomato before either and I’ve never tried grits either although I’ve often heard it compared to porridge or cream of wheat which I have had but definitely not something that I look forward to having I think it may be a childhood thing as well??? Also white sausage gravy that they eat for breakfast in the south, not something we have we always enjoy good brown gravy. I think it’s a difference between the North and the south?? I definitely am going to make some French onion soup to be canned!!! Looks amazing! Thanks for the idea, God bless! ❤️🥰🙏🏻🍁🇨🇦🙏🏻
Prayers for all those affected by the hurricane. ❤️🙏🏻
I used to be like you when cutting onions. Not anymore. I put a fan up blowing right at me and no more tears. None. It really works
Fried green tomato blts are delish! I don’t eat meat so I leave the b off and it’s still delicious!
I cut up a big bag of onions with my food processor & vacuum seal them on my back porch. Mine are for the freezer but the method would work for soup as well. Hint: press the bags flat before freezing so you can break off what you need for cooking later.
I’ve never used a batter for fried green tomatoes. Eggs, flour, breadcrumbs and corn meal each seasoned with salt and pepper and Cayenne pepper. Dredge in flour egg then breadcrumbs and corn meal.Hot oil should almost cover when frying. You can dip in your favorite dressing or hot sauce.
Yea my granny always did a slow fry with the tomatoes to soften the inside and they would melt in your mouth…, unless you like the crunch 😊
Feel better!
Thank you!
I make green tomato relish with mine. You can not tell the difference if you use cucumber, zucchini or green tomatoes. The relish is called million dollar. Very easy to make.
We usually dip our fried green tomatoes in a sauce, like ranch.
Fried green tomatoe on a bacon Sandwich is delicious. Its a Blt with fried green tomatoe instead of a red tomatoe. It is delicious.
Green tomatoes also make a great bread and butter pickle.
I love fried green tomatoes. I cut mine like French fries sometimes. I dip mine in real buttermilk & 2 eggs beaten then dredge them in flour with pink Redmond salt, pepper, garlic powder & onion powder . Then fry in avocado oil with some bacon grease. Then salt lightly again. I make a homemade dill ranch dressing to dip them in. I also do mild & hot banana peppers. Also mild & hot jalapeños I do zucchini & onion this way too. Fresh Green beans ,Broccoli florets & cauliflower florets too. I cut zucchini like French fries I cut the hot peppers strips no seeds & all mild in rings. We also do dill pickles breaded & fried. We do all these as a fried vegetable baskets for everyone to choose their favorites. At the Indiana State fair & all county fairs they sell baskets of these vegetables with a ranch dressing. We just choose to eat them at home. GOD BLESS from Julie west Central Indiana USA Farmland
I also can up my tomato water. It's very useful!
I usually season up my fried green tomatoes pretty good to give it flavor.
you can season the green tomatoes with what you like, dip in ranch dressing, I like it with pimento cheese. We have a restaurant here that serves it with a corn salsa and chipotle crema.. I've also had it on a Bacon sandwich with avocado and a remoulade, it was delicious.
Chelsea, hint from Alabama. You need a light horse raddish sauce to dip the tomatoes in.. HEre in the south we eat them with field peas, collards, corn, and cornbread.
Green tomatoes are an acquired taste, but we love them in the deep south. You def need more seasonings in the mix. Paprika, garlic, copious amounts of black pepper make all the difference. We never eat them by themselves. Either on a BLT, 'scrambled' with cornmeal, flour and spices in an iron skillet with yellow squash and zucchini mixed in. My fav is pickled green tomatoes with banana peppers and garlic. Yum!
Ive never had fried green tomatoes but the movie is my faborite and has been since high school. I planted music garlic last year and it grew massive bulbs easily twice the size of the other 2 garlics i grew i saved the biggest ones to replant this year so i have high hopes for next years garlic
All you need to do is slice up, I use cormeal salt and pepper. Batter Them and fry in hot grease. I do them like my grandmother
Looking so cool in those goggles!
My favorite are fired zucchini! Although I like fried green tomatoes, NOTHING comes close to fired zucchini! Yummy! Just slice them, dredge them in egg, then in flour with salt and pepper. Fry them up. Add a lil more salt after they come out of the grease. Good eating for sure!!
Both my husband and I grew up eating fried green tomatoes. He absolutely loves them. I can't stand the sour taste. I found that if I slice the tomatoes and soak them in buttermilk for about 20 or so before I batter and fry, they turn into a much more pleasurable beast. Most of the sour taste is gone.
I normally eat fried green tomatoes w/ a mayo-based sauce. Sometimes a spicy red mayo sauce and sometimes more like a 1000 island dressing.
I think the only time I’ve made fried green tomatoes we used egg and breadcrumbs like when we do zucchini. Then of course the kids dipped in ranch dressing.
I had them for the first time in a Restaurant 3 weeks ago just to try and they were amazing, coated with a nice batter and topped-cooked with a parm cheese !!
I've made green tomato cake that my family enjoyed.
I was that someone, who reminded you of picking your purple beans 😃- I am glad, it worked 🥰🤩
I had fried green tomatoes in the 80's so didn't grow up eating them. I love them but what I use is cajun seasoning on them them put them in a batter using buttermilk. I also make a dip which is a copy cat to the blooming onion dip. Also use that dip for onion rings. I only ever use tempura batter for onion rings and also dip onion rings in flour before you tempura them.
We grew up with fresh green beans, l still eat them cooked and raw
I love fried green tomatoes. Grew up eating them. My mom only used cornmeal salt and pepper. 😊
I LOVE fried green tomatoes but I didn’t grow up with them. I do season the tomato directly though. And sometimes just use a light flour dredge.
Fried green tomatoes, go best with pimento cheese
Salt and pepper green tomatoes before batter. Also using a dry coating of seasoned flour or corn meal is better in my opinion than the batter recipe.
I have only been eating them since my 20s about 40 years. One of my favorite summer meals. Craved them during my pregnancy lol.
I love fried green tomatoes but we rolled them in flour and fried them in bacon grease. YUMMY!!! I so do wish we still had green tomatoes... I may have to find a farm market and get me some green tomatoes if they still have some.
We eat fried green potatoes on sandwiches with pickles and roumelade sauce!
Love the Whistle Stop mix but in Louisiana we fry them in half oil and half butter and season the mix with “Slap your mama” seasoning mix and they are delicious
Fried yellow squash is good too!
My grandma would make green tomato pie. Surly she used sugar to make it taste so good. 😊
You need to season your green tomatoes. Let them sit about 30 minutes then dip them and fry them. I love them, especially to make a sandwich.
The green tomatoes are usually served with a sort of remoulade sauce or even hot sauce. Also, definitely important to salt the tomatoes. - maybe it’s not your thing though and that’s okay too
Blue skies today . Was raking up dogwood berries
I love fried green tomatoes and yes I grew up eating them. I also prefer canned green beans over frozen I never had frozen green beans till I was very grown up .
Me, too! Frozen texture is off.
Salt pepper and some Lawry’s style seasoning salt will help with taste.
Grew up with fried green tomatoes and love them but they need more seasoning than that mix gives. I add onion, salt, pepper and garlic to the tomato slices before battering.
Fried green tomatoes are best when served with a remoulade sauce.
You have to dip the fried green tomato in Ranch. :)
The tomato juice makes a great Mexican rice.
The funniest think is it rainny and little bid cold today
