Someone on a dbd fb group tracked the survivors he encountered from his last 500 games, heres some data: Total survivors: 1800. - 540 male Survivors, most popular survivor: Dwight Fairfield with 78 encounters. - 1260 female Survivors, most popular survivor: SABLE WARD with 229 encounters proceeded by FENG MIN with 107 encounters. Notice how Sable ward doubles the 2nd place encounters and almost triples the top 1 male survivor. This should be taken with a grain of salt since it is anecdotal evidence but it really tells you dbd playerbase really be hating on popular survivors.
It's not anecdotal, it's actually quantitative data. Anecdotal data is "I feel like I see sable everywhere". So it's a pretty legit study. It's incomplete data because it's only 1 segment of the dbd population but still useful to make some conclusions
It's the same thing as Wesker. People like them and then they get bored of constantly seeing them. It's fair enough to feel that way but people often take the hate too far.

That's exactly why I hate her. The character attracts a certain types of players, and that's all there is to it. It's the same case with how Neas are associated as tryhards, and Leons are associated as useless.
I was totally unaware that Sable was hated. In fact, I thought most people absolutely loved her, which makes me think the hate spawns from seeing her so often, the same way it did with Wesker. Beloved out the gate, but grew tiresome quickly due to the lack of variety.
I think the only ppl who hate her are the ppl who made she getting so many skins. You see the same thing in OW2 also, ppl hate mercy and kikro bc they get skins alot more than other characters.

As bad as Mercy is right now, her res is one of the most annoying abilities in the game, and Kiriko being safe 100% of the time just sucks. I genuinely despise when people will complain about something "nuanced" that doesn't actually exist. It's almost like... The Unknown.... is a monster that takes voices from its victims... and doesn't necessarily have to have a uniform appearance? It's literally in the name, we don't understand what this creature is or why it does these things, it just lures in victims by using the voices of other victims. Them having a male and female form means nothing, it doesn't make it trans and it doesn't make any kind of statement that trans people are monsters, because it isn't trans. My only issue is that Mikaela's lore already established her roommate Julian in her backstory as a big supporting figure for her and how *his disappearance* is what motivated the story she told the night the Entity took her. Having Sable suddenly introduced as this character that was apparently always Mikaela's best friend (who was never mentioned before) was a bit odd for me
It's probably because they didn't have Sable in mind when they originally made Mikaela's backstory, and they decided to make her a part of Mikaela's backstory after the fact. Either way... does it really matter that much? It's not like Sable being Mikaela's friend in the lore affects literally anything. And realistically, who says Mikaela can't have more than one close friend? Maybe Sable wasn't around when Julian got taken and Mikaela stared telling stories.

He also said this is an “issue” when it literally doesn’t affect the character at all or anything else, really. People only hate her, for the same reason they have always hated the most popular characters, and that's because she is one of the most played characters, and most survivors are terrible at the game, so 90% of the time you have a Sable on your team, that player is terrible. Sable is 2016 Claudette. Claudette was so hated, that even after Nea came out and took the number one spot, the Claudette stigma stayed, and it's still a stigma in 2024.
This is not a new concept for the gaming community guys, popular characters will always get more cosmetics. Lets not forget Feng min guys?? It has nothing to do with favoritism from dbd itself its fully on the financial side. What sells, what do more people play, what had more excitement the second it hit dbd. I love Haddie players and I HOPE you guys do get more cosmetics its the same thing I feel for Meg and Zarina but we all have to just wait and see where DBD is willing to spend their time and money. Let's all be reasonable here and understand there is a financial side to these companies that give us these cool licensed AND original characters.

People just hate her because she’s popular. Even more popular than Mikaela. DBD has a big queer audience and, surprise surprise, Sable Ward dressing more alternative than most of the cast appeals to that queer audience. She looks fantastic and people like her a lot, so of course Behaviour is gonna make more cosmetics for her.

Gabe and Sable have the exact amount of skins right now. What you showed was a misconception of the fact that Sable has more 3 piece outfits as a whole than gabe. But gabe has more one piece skins that extends the list and make it seem he has more. Which right now, he doesn't. They are actually tied with the # of skins they have

they are just clueless, have more problems with ada dam there was one match, I got tunneld by the trapper (not a problem for me) and my last chase would be SO good like - last gen is finished and the other can escape good BUT, this one ada was watching us. and I was thinking, ok maybe she want to take a hit for me or runs for the people no... she want to lift up the dropped pallet, I was vaulting all the time. then she starts lifting this thing up, blocking it for me to vault, blocking me in my chase too, and trapper got me. She was the only random survivor we had in this match, and shocking - the 3 man escape was after this stupid move a 0 escape

For example: I have been sandbagged so many times in the past week by people playing Sable, therefore Sable players must sandbag a lot and I hate that. So when people say "I hate Sable" what they really mean is "I hate the way people who use Sable play DBD." I think that point is ENTIRELY gameplay dependent and is almost exactly a 1:1 of your Skullmerchant example.

Nah, I hate playing against certain Skull Merchant players, yes. That doesn't mean I hate Skull Merchant as a character though. She's got great skins and I've had a lot of fun games against her. I've had a load of miserable games against her for sure though. All depends on how she's played and if I'm solo queue or swf. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Just as with association therapy, skull merchant automatically gets associated with those who play her and vice versa. There is no forgiveness in the afterlife for those who played skull merchant.

Personally, in my experience, Sable survivors Sandbagged me and tried looping horribly often and as killer were always super chadlike god tier players that i just could not bother chasing for whatever reason. Now shes just my auto target if i get the chance. Ya know?
I'm personally just annoyed by the games art direction. The way bhvr chose to portray Sable's character to me shows abandonment of the "horror game survivor character" aesthetic. This does not mean the design itself is bad, or people who make the new survivor models are idiots ore something. She is very pretty and the designs (both offical and fan made) are actually stunning. But I'll say this: Can you imagine bhvr dropping a skimpy bikini outfit for Feng/Meg in like 2018?

Personally I never hated Sable, I moreso hate how BHVR has handled its first alt character. Sable was designed to be part of the alternative fashion scene. It's very apparent. But as someone in that circle myself, I just view how they did it to be incredibly flawed. She's supposed to be goth yet most of what she offers simply isn't gothic. At all. Her base head cosmetic is more akin to scene than goth, I've never personally seen someone in the alt scene were high top sneakers. The bug cosmetic outfit we have is the closest thing we have to something that is ACTUALLY under that umbrella along with one of the release alternate hairstyles which falls into the trad goth umbrella. Her lore is painfully stereotypical as well. Enjoying graveyards and being obsessed with the occult and spooky movies aren't...parts of being in that community. Many of the people I've met in the community actually don't even like horror movies and I have yet to meet someone who unironically loves the graveyard. It feels stereotypical and kinda condescending imo. The last nail in the coffin for me was the Dev stream where they said they wanted Sable to be goth, but not "too goth" because they didn't want her to be "scary". This to me read as BHVR just not wanting to commit to Sable as a character and instead made her a product. Which sucks. Hating on her because of popularity is stupid. It's a dumb thing to hate a character for. Especially in a moment like this when it's a community contest focused on the talent and skill of those in our community. Even though I don't personally like the Sable skin, I still think the artist is a good artist and that should be acknowledged. This entire situation is wild to me, even as a Sable detractor.
Just letting you know, in her lore it literally says she doesn't label herself. She doesn't call herself goth. It's a super common misconception even in the real world that people mistake alt for goth and she's a prime example of that. That's why I love her personally, she's a alt girlie who doesn't label herself and that feels so close to home for many people, myself included! I understand wanting her to be goth and have this trad or other subculture goth vibe about her but she's not and people push that too much about her imo! She's just alternative, and that works well!

i remember one of mintskull's vids pointed out how haddie and gabriel as coloured characters who released during anniversaries were immediately overshadowed by the white thirsttrap original survivors that released after them, being vittorio and sable. nobody bought haddie or gabe's outfits because they sucked hot ass. neither of them had green rarity skins on release (haddie at least got this changed, gabe still doesn't), haddie's purple was a set and gabe's purple was so limiting in terms of mix and match that it may as well have been a set, whereas vito and sable both launched with two green outfits and two unlinked purple outfits. i suppose people look at these two examples and draw the conclusion that sable and vittorio were hand-picked to be popular moneymakers while haddie and gabriel were left to fend for themselves with what little they had. it's almost as if a survivor does better when bhvr gives them a full wardrobe of unlinked cosmetics on release

And characters like sable and Vitorrio released with 2 greens while characters like haddie and gabe either had to wait or STILL don't have any greens
In-terms of full outfits: 1 is a deep rift, 2 are time locked (Halloween and Anniversary), 2 are sets, and a time-locked sweater (I think you forgot some skins are time-locked) So for a character that has been out for 2 years she has 5 full cosmetics (not counting a green re-color), and 2 shirts (iron maiden and a dog shirt). This doesn't lead to good mix-match options. And the internet LOVES their version of "Goth" which sable fits Vittorio who released after her and has 9 cosmetic options, not counting recolors, and has 0 sets, and 2 time locked halloween/christmas shirts If you're new to the game, it just looks like Vittorio has more stuff. This isn't even touching how David, after he was announced as gay, didn't get skins for an entire year, which is incredibly weird when he IS a most played character, and after an announcement. Kinda hard to feel like it's not intentional, especially when Mikaela hasn't not-gotten a skin this year per update. I know BHVR's a business so "release skins for played characters = money," but no one will play the other characters as they fall further and further behind on customizable skins The hate on Sable is a bit much though, and people need to give proper critique's to BHVR's actual skin-line development, more importantly their management. Personally, I don't care, but I head-canon Sable as trans, so to me she is a minority getting cosmetics. I understand that's not canon though

The only thing that I hate about Sable is that I don't think I've seen a single Sable that was actually good at the game. Pretty much every single Sable that I saw is below average in terms of skill. I don't recall any amazing plays from any Sable and she's easily the most popular survivor. Almost every time I see a Nancy or Ace, they are quite solid
I think sable as a character is fine, however the players sometimes give me the ick, where they just kinda fetishize her. Of course that isn't everyone who plays the character, but I'm not a big fan of people seeing her as just gooner bait. I think this is a problem with other characters too, sable just has the most vocal people I guess

It's not anecdotal, it's actually quantitative data. Anecdotal data is "I feel like I see sable everywhere". So it's a pretty legit study. It's incomplete data because it's only 1 segment of the dbd population but still useful to make some conclusions

That's exactly why I hate her. The character attracts a certain types of players, and that's all there is to it. It's the same case with how Neas are associated as tryhards, and Leons are associated as useless.
I was totally unaware that Sable was hated. In fact, I thought most people absolutely loved her, which makes me think the hate spawns from seeing her so often, the same way it did with Wesker. Beloved out the gate, but grew tiresome quickly due to the lack of variety.
I think the only ppl who hate her are the ppl who made she getting so many skins. You see the same thing in OW2 also, ppl hate mercy and kikro bc they get skins alot more than other characters.

My only issue is that Mikaela's lore already established her roommate Julian in her backstory as a big supporting figure for her and how *his disappearance* is what motivated the story she told the night the Entity took her.

It's probably because they didn't have Sable in mind when they originally made Mikaela's backstory, and they decided to make her a part of Mikaela's backstory after the fact.
Either way... does it really matter that much? It's not like Sable being Mikaela's friend in the lore affects literally anything. And realistically, who says Mikaela can't have more than one close friend? Maybe Sable wasn't around when Julian got taken and Mikaela stared telling stories.

People only hate her, for the same reason they have always hated the most popular characters, and that's because she is one of the most played characters, and most survivors are terrible at the game, so 90% of the time you have a Sable on your team, that player is terrible. Sable is 2016 Claudette. Claudette was so hated, that even after Nea came out and took the number one spot, the Claudette stigma stayed, and it's still a stigma in 2024.

dam there was one match, I got tunneld by the trapper (not a problem for me) and my last chase would be SO good like - last gen is finished and the other can escape good BUT, this one ada was watching us. and I was thinking, ok maybe she want to take a hit for me or runs for the people
no... she want to lift up the dropped pallet, I was vaulting all the time. then she starts lifting this thing up, blocking it for me to vault, blocking me in my chase too, and trapper got me.
She was the only random survivor we had in this match, and shocking - the 3 man escape was after this stupid move a 0 escape

I'm personally just annoyed by the games art direction. The way bhvr chose to portray Sable's character to me shows abandonment of the "horror game survivor character" aesthetic. This does not mean the design itself is bad, or people who make the new survivor models are idiots ore something. She is very pretty and the designs (both offical and fan made) are actually stunning.

Personally I never hated Sable, I moreso hate how BHVR has handled its first alt character. Sable was designed to be part of the alternative fashion scene. It's very apparent. But as someone in that circle myself, I just view how they did it to be incredibly flawed.
She's supposed to be goth yet most of what she offers simply isn't gothic. At all. Her base head cosmetic is more akin to scene than goth, I've never personally seen someone in the alt scene were high top sneakers. The bug cosmetic outfit we have is the closest thing we have to something that is ACTUALLY under that umbrella along with one of the release alternate hairstyles which falls into the trad goth umbrella.
Her lore is painfully stereotypical as well. Enjoying graveyards and being obsessed with the occult and spooky movies aren't...parts of being in that community. Many of the people I've met in the community actually don't even like horror movies and I have yet to meet someone who unironically loves the graveyard. It feels stereotypical and kinda condescending imo.
The last nail in the coffin for me was the Dev stream where they said they wanted Sable to be goth, but not "too goth" because they didn't want her to be "scary". This to me read as BHVR just not wanting to commit to Sable as a character and instead made her a product. Which sucks.
Hating on her because of popularity is stupid. It's a dumb thing to hate a character for. Especially in a moment like this when it's a community contest focused on the talent and skill of those in our community. Even though I don't personally like the Sable skin, I still think the artist is a good artist and that should be acknowledged.

Just letting you know, in her lore it literally says she doesn't label herself. She doesn't call herself goth. It's a super common misconception even in the real world that people mistake alt for goth and she's a prime example of that. I understand wanting her to be goth and have this trad or other subculture goth vibe about her but she's not and people push that too much about her imo! She's just alternative, and that works well!

I just don’t like Sable because it’s pretty obvious what they were trying to do when they designed her and I just don’t feel like it belongs in my horror-themed competitive tag party game
they made a girl who dresses alternative. so that the huge amount of alt dbd players have a character they can identify with and cosmetic options they actually like. not our fault horny mfers want to goon for her.

It is misogyny and the fact that the official subreddit of this game allows these type of posts tells you how much this community hates women. People were literally attacking her for wearing the bikini outfit and showing feet, yet not one comment is said about the shirtless men and the Felix guy showing chest hair? Recently went into a match and the killer said they targeted Sable for playing Sable? People think people who play her are pervs because the style is associated with e-girls, it's so unfair. Guys never have to face this.
I was going to argue with your point about how it's "pathetic to hate a fictional character" but then learned that you were talking about a context entirely different than what I was thinking.

Honestly have never met a good Sable. Theyre either ass or forgettable. Thr hate clmes from the fact theyll alwaus be a detriment to your team, getting in the way during your chases, insta dying on theirs. This mainly comws from the fact shes super popular so all types play her abd drag the reputation down.

i remember one of mintskull's vids pointed out how haddie and gabriel as coloured characters who released during anniversaries were immediately overshadowed by the white thirsttrap original survivors that released after them, being vittorio and sable.
nobody bought haddie or gabe's outfits because they sucked hot ass. neither of them had green rarity skins on release (haddie at least got this changed, gabe still doesn't), haddie's purple was a set and gabe's purple was so limiting in terms of mix and match that it may as well have been a set, whereas vito and sable both launched with two green outfits and two unlinked purple outfits.
i suppose people look at these two examples and draw the conclusion that sable and vittorio were hand-picked to be popular moneymakers while haddie and gabriel were left to fend for themselves with what little they had.
it's almost as if a survivor does better when bhvr gives them a full wardrobe of unlinked cosmetics on release
literally this. i love gabe so so much but I don't play him because his cosmetics suck So Bad. I really wish he got the haddie treatment of giving him more skins, and giving him good skins. haddie herself still needs more skins but atleast she's gotten more attention after everyone pointed out how awful she was being treated in the cosmetics department

The reason haddie is the 3rd least picked is beacuse since survivors are basically just skins the outfits they have determine if someone will invest in them. If someone likes two characters but one of them gets nice cosmetics you can mix and match with vs one who's stuff should basically be a set with how un-mixable it is (looking at you gabe) the player is going to go for the character with the better cosmetics simply because people want to look cool or cute in games. And characters like sable and Vitorrio released with 2 greens while characters like haddie and gabe either had to wait or STILL don't have any greens
In-terms of full outfits: 1 is a deep rift, 2 are time locked (Halloween and Anniversary), 2 are sets, and a time-locked sweater (I think you forgot some skins are time-locked)
So for a character that has been out for 2 years she has 5 full cosmetics (not counting a green re-color), and 2 shirts (iron maiden and a dog shirt). This doesn't lead to good mix-match options. And the internet LOVES their version of "Goth" which sable fits
Vittorio who released after her and has 9 cosmetic options, not counting recolors, and has 0 sets, and 2 time locked halloween/christmas shirts
If you're new to the game, it just looks like Vittorio has more stuff.
This isn't even touching how David, after he was announced as gay, didn't get skins for an entire year, which is incredibly weird when he IS a most played character, and after an announcement.
Kinda hard to feel like it's not intentional, especially when Mikaela hasn't not-gotten a skin this year per update.
I know BHVR's a business so "release skins for played characters = money," but no one will play the other characters as they fall further and further behind on customizable skins
The hate on Sable is a bit much though, and people need to give proper critique's to BHVR's actual skin-line development, more importantly their management.
Personally, I don't care, but I head-canon Sable as trans, so to me she is a minority getting cosmetics. I understand that's not canon though

I voted for it bc I think she deserves another cosmetic personally. However. I wish a different one made it to finals. There was this pastel looking one that I adored but didn't make it sadly

Who said you HAVE to vote for something "creative" and "unique"? Something being creative or unique doesn't mean it's inherently good. As much as some people would want to believe it is, fashion/beauty/art is NOT subjective for the most part. There is such a thing as objective beauty.

The only thing that I hate about Sable is that I don't think I've seen a single Sable that was actually good at the game. Pretty much every single Sable that I saw is below average in terms of skill. I don't recall any amazing plays from any Sable and she's easily the most popular survivor. Almost every time I see a Nancy or Ace, they are quite solid

I think sable as a character is fine, however the players sometimes give me the ick, where they just kinda fetishize her. Of course that isn't everyone who plays the character, but I'm not a big fan of people seeing her as just gooner bait. I think this is a problem with other characters too, sable just has the most vocal people I guess

I think the hate against sable is because with her being such a popular survivor, she really is just a stand in for hate against toxic survivors.
Kind of like how playing a hated killer will automatically make certain survivors have a negative confirmation bias to anything you do in the match.
