I've watched several of these 'DIY' TH-cam remove/install videos and by far your video is the most comprehensive and a great tutorial for someone that has the means and tenacity to do the job themselves. I recently acquired a 2001 Mercury Marquis w/54K miles on the engine that has a CARFAX that reads like a juvenile delinquent's rap sheet. The engine was flushed at 34K and the thermostat and top & bottom radiator hoses were replaced at 50K). The one original owner (Mesa, Arizona) had this car maintained by her dealer and it was obviously garaged over its life time while she had it. (Yeah, the 'Church Lady' rarely drove it 'cept to church on Sundays) So now I find out that I have this ticking time bomb that makes me leery when it comes to road trips. For now I commute roundtrip 20 miles and 30 roundtrip to town from my rural ranch here in Arizona to town for groceries. QUESTION... I feel I should just get the replacement part and have my local Ford dealer install the replacement intake manifold before the OEM part fails, do you agree? Of course I expect the dealer may bump up the labor cost to a minimum of 4 hours just because they can which means the entire cost if I want their parts and service warranty means I'll likely have to rely on their replacement part putting my final out the door cost, I surmise, to be near $700 to 1,000 dollars. Choke, Cough, GAG! What say you?

wrdmndan akdude I found that I could change both gaskets both valve covers left and right when the intake manifold was gone. I didn't have to drop the engine or do any goofy stuff. Very glad I did because mine was leaking like crazy right onto the exhaust
Was the passenger side actually doable with the intake off? I changed my driver side like a year ago it was the only one leaking... tye passenger side was literally impossible without moving the ac box
Great video. It's a big help. I'm in the process of installing this intake on my 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis LSE. I noticed that on the part sent by 1A Auto, the 10 mm intake bolts fit about 1 mm off center through the intake. There's also some overhang where the spark plugs are located. So far, these things have not been deal-breakers. The bolts fit snugly whereas in an OEM intake I imagine there would be more play before torquing. There seems to be enough room for the spark plugs to fit, although ideally the part would be a perfect fit. Considering this intake fits a variety of Ford 4.6 engines, I am not surprised that there is some imperfection. I will let you all know how things look once I'm finished.
40 minutes I go I thought I’d make a video of doing this job. Nope, this video is perfect. Wont fix what isn’t broken, any video I’d make would do this one a disservice. Thank you for making this.
LOL!!! Lower plellum... 21:37 Well, enough of that. I used this vid as a guide to replace my intake manifold and it was VERY helpful. Thumbs up! It was particularly handy during re-assembly when I was tired and might have started to make mistakes without the step by step guidance. Thanks for that - plellums and all...
I just followed this tutorial all the way through. Got it done! Be careful tightening your throttle body if you are doing this job, the new fasteners are very cheap, lube them up with wd40 before installing throttle body
Just an FYI. When removing the heat shielding bracket ( between the fire wall) on the driver's side just before the fuel rail removal. There's a possibility of having a smaller bracket on there just before the main bolt/nut. You will have 3 1/2" nuts on the back side to remove.
@@larrydalba3031 I followed the video and did just fine. Everyone always chimes in. If it was easier they'd have done that. There's a reason they didn't.
@@adamcrownvictoriacarrepair7105 Some year models can have small differences such as this. Good to put these things in the comments so people can know what to expect
17 minutes in and though it has of course taken me a bit longer since grabbing tools etc in between which you guys cut out(thank God), so far so good. Just finished the night with taking off throttle body. Don't have the quick disconnect tool. Might be a good quick add on to explain how to get off if you don't have one. I'll keep ya posted!!!! 👍
I done this on 2 of my crown vics.I never disconnected the fuel line.I just pulled out the fuel rails and pulled it out and sat it upside down on tje passenger side.
This is the best video I've ever seen by a step-by-step instruction of taking apart every screw and every ratchet to use simply awesome explanation this should be in every automotive technical School

I just purchased my first part from 1A Auto. I'll be doing the intake manifold on my 2000 grand marquis tomorrow morning. 1A had a price that couldn't be matched, along with free next day shipping. Looking forward to doing business with them again.
I realize most people are not going to clean their engines, this one is filthy. It makes me feel like cleaning. But I think you've made a very good, solid guide here. As always of course.
No need to remove the belt & alternator. Just remove the top bracket. Also, if you live in the rust belt like I do, you may not be able to remove the EGR tube from the valve, even with penetrating oil or heat. Alternatively, I unbolted the EGR valve from the throttle body, and just left it in place, and worked around it

Just another comment.....This video was awesome and saved me big dollars at my local shop. I am NO mechanic but I am good with tools and such....show me a video and I can do it. THIS VIDEO was the best I have seen out there. I have 08 crown vics and though slightly different, the video captured the important stuff......thanks guys!!!!
The rear bolt on the heat shield over rear drivers side fuel rail is no joke. The harnesses back there and one is on the stud running through the nut you need to take off to remove it. No room at all, very very very tight fit. It’s not a joke and it has to come off if you plan on torquing the intake correctly . If you don’t have a extended ratchet like the one he used in the video with a multi pivoting head. Don’t even attempt it without one owning one .

Yes outstanding presentation. When I pulled my thermostat housing off to get to the thermostat , the big o-ring for the intake runner had pushed its way more into the cross over than what was still under the intake runner. One thing I would suggest, to anyone doing this reair, If you noticed both the thermostat housing bolts were oxidized very bad. Take them to a bench grinder with a wire wheel on it and clean them up. Then take a smear of dio-electric grease and apply a very thin film on the shoulder portion of those bolts. Or the next time you try to remove them you wont. They will snap off in the lower portion of that cross over.
Very detailed and excellent video. I think that is the problem with my Crown Vic. After watching this I feel confident I can replace the intake manifold if that is actually my problem. 1A Auto Parts Hi A1....I have a problem I can't figure out and can't afford proper mechanic. I have a 1998 Merc Grand Marquis with 160k mi. The engine cooling fan works sporadically. If it's under 90*F outside I have no overheating issues. What it does is lets say I have AC on and come to a light, within 30 seconds the fan kicks off and the temp skyrockets....unless I get on freeway real quick and do 70 mph with AC off I'll be in big trouble. Once temp is back down to normal I can kick AC back on and drive 30 miles with no issues if there is no traffic on freeway. I have replaced the radiator, thermostat, ECT SENSOR, COOLING FAN RELAY AND ABOUT 3 years ago I replaced the fan with aftermarket one but it has been fine up till now. The fan connector and harness have no burnt or melted connectors.......I'm totally at a loss..........PLEASE HELP ME...
This video is amazing! Thank You 1A Auto Parts. Anyone that gave this a thumbs down did so by mistake as we all have done. You set the bar for DIY video excellence!
Thanks 1A Auto...man, couldn't have done it without you. Many many thanks! One thing I would add is to make sure you don't over-torque those 5 throttle body bolts. I made the assumption that they should also be torqued to 18 foot-pounds, and broke one of them off. This isn't something that the video told me to do...I was just sort of lost when told to hand-tighten them...probably my misunderstaing. Anyway, keep up the great work, and thanks, again!
The video doesn't mention it, but the replacement manifold comes with a piece of paper that recommends replacing the fuel injector O-rings, which are NOT included with the replacement manifold. I had already begun disassembling my engine before the replacement manifold arrived and had to get a ride to the local auto store to get the O-rings.
Can you answer what you did in regards of the Throttle body elbow Torque specs? He just says snug the bolts up reinserting the throttle body elbow but never says if they are torque to any specs or just snugged up good
I love your videos!!!! Complete details including tips to make the job easier. Thank you for actually showing us what to do when removing hard to disconnect parts like hoses, egr, etc and not just mentioning it and then fast forwarding or skipping through video. It is a huuuge help to see the technique being performed. Thank you A1 Auto. Furthermore... Let me say this.... I have bought a lot parts and repaired many different vehicles. I have NEVER received a defective part and every one has fit perfectly and some have lasted longer than the oem from my vehicles.

just finished changing my intake manifold following this video, great guide three things i would add for anyone else thats going to do this: 1. only buy the ford performance/racing manifold, all others, while cheaper, are garbage 2. you dont have to take the hose off for the thermostat, just undo the two bolts and move the whole thing aside attached to the hose 3. the back bolt on the plate over the drivers side fuel rail will be a bitch to get to
Dude you are awesome. I followed your instructions to the letter and it went smooth as silk. The fuel rail crash bracket gave me hell bit I eventually got it .
I've been procrastinating doing this job for several months because of that fuel rail bracket. I've go back and forth as to whether this would stop me from getting it done. How difficult is it? Do you have to perform 'magic' moves to get it off? Do you have any tips before I take this on.
"When I remove it, you'll see where the ratchet is. You should be able to find it no problem." Finding that mofo and removing that mofo are two completely different things. One is like "oh, yeah, there it is ". The other involves running out of curse words and making up new ones. Lol
The gentleman had a soothing voice not to mention he must be a hell of a mechanic I didn't realize it was that much work involved excellent video I don't think I could remember where all the parts go once I took it apart oh well I guess I'll take out my phone and take pictures of everything I do
Your video is well done and has helped a bunch of people I'm sure. As is always typical whenever I work on a car these days, THE most difficult part of every job is the B.S. trying to figure out how each different connector unlocks, followed by struggl9ng with the @#$!*&$ to come apart even when done correctly. These damn things are the worst part of any job now. The videos that I need, are the ones that have not been made yet - videos showing how to unlock each and every one, and how to do it without breaking any. I can handle the rest. I no longer enjoy wrenching on cars that have these.
Thank you for listing all parts and tools needed for the job. I did one on my 2002 Grand Marquis 12 years ago and didn't have a item list to go by. It took all weekend in my driveway to replace. Now I have to do it again on my 2003 Grand Marquis. The plastic intake got so distorted and warped that it leaks pretty good. Now I have your item list and planning about 5 hours to do it on a Saturday afternoon. Thank you!!

Great video, thanks. I’ll be buying manifold from you guys and installing on my exact same car. thanks. Also, I grew up working on 70s&80s vehicles, so I take many pics on the later models when taking them apart, cause of all the extra crap they put on the cars.
Great video just did my 2004 town car, video was down to the tee on everything only problem i had was the crash bar at the back of the driver side fuel rail. I just remove the windshield wiper motor assembly & had plenty of room so my suggestion would be take the assembly off before you start & put back when finished
It should be noted that this after market intake manifold is NOT suggested for the 01+ year Modular engine. In 2001, Ford introduced the improved, larger heads, which the application shown in the video has the smaller ports for 1998-2000. For years 2001+, it is advised to stick with the OEM Ford Racing intake manifold.
I had a mechanic replace my intake manifold on my 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis LS. He also replace one of the coil packs because of a misfire in the #4 cylinder . I had the spark plugs replaced with new double platinum plugs .Ford calls for platinum plugs The plastic cosmetic cover no longer fits . I smell gas from the engine bay but I cannot see a leak . Those cars even with low mileage had some gas smells but not strong. The engine idle is not always consistent when in drive . At times it is like it wants do die but does not. Old cars become money pits . I had both front power windows fixed . The blend door actuator replaced for $1,000. They had to take off the complete dashboard . The part is about $20.00 part . The labor is the problem. My brother has two Prius cars both with about 140,000 miles . Neither one has had any problems so far . I like the car for its size and highway driving . They are very old school cars. Only one wheel drives the car . Very old school. Merc only has 72,000 miles on it .
gas smell is usually the emissions valve system under the gas tank when bad you will smell gas. or the gas coupler line has failed in the engine bay. or the mechanic did not replace the injector seals when replacing the mani. There timny little rubber donuts. Its a must for this very reason. Sniff around where the injectors go into the mani. See if you see any weeping gas around the seal. They sell those rubber seals on amazon.
I am about to tackle this exact job, on my 2007 Lincoln TownCar. The heater hose connection, broke..which is part of this entire part..which means I hafta do this job. BECAUSE of this video, I feel 100% comfortable and confident that I can do it. Thank you for this video, it's free and THAT aspect needs to be applauded so much more. Man thank you a one auto this video is awesome I just replaced a intake on a profit car I found out the intake was cracked after I purchased it when I heard something about that crack where the heater hose go into so i replaced the intake rather than sealing it and saling it to someone like that the only problem I had was the mounting bracket for the alternator did fit the new intake I think I'm going to have to drill some holes

Awesome video! Helped a ton and successful replacement of the intake manifold. My biggest issue was related to the heat shield with the "15mm" bolt in the back near the firewall. What a pain in the "you know what"!!! My 2001 also had a 13mm nut holding some wiring plate. There was NO WAY I was able to get that 15mm bolt back in place let alone the 13mm. Just going to hope one bolt up top will do the trick.
I am about to do this on a 2003 Police interceptor ,does your part match up for that year also ? I don't believe much was changed between years . I really gained a ton of knowledge watching your video thank you Outstanding video
+Jason Bowers Thanks for watching! As long as you have a 4.6L engine and the 8th digit of the VIN is "9" or"W" it will be exactly the same! Here is a link to the part if you need it: www.1aauto.com/intake-manifold/i/1aeim00012?TH-cam&CTA+Comment&N0Rq03Sj_k
If you have pitting marks like that around the water passage way, then I would recommend carefully using JB Weld original cold weld formula to fill in the debits. I did this to a neighbors car about three months ago, and it has been holding up fine since then. I talked to a couple of guys who work on Fords full time, and they said that if you don't address those debits around the water passageway, then the gasket may fail again a few weeks or months.
Thank you for sharing you make it look easy as for leaks mine had a plastic thermostat housing when someone puts the gasket in wrong it cracks for anybody else that has that issue

I got an 04 GMQ too. Love that car. It need a new mani soon after I bought it. Got a racing mani from amazon 100% better performance. the other thing is keep the steering column universal joint well lubricated. Its in the engine bay.
Thank you. I read in forums and some shops even suggest purchasing that same one piece gasket and throwing those individual ones away. You say they will seal better. I will go with your word. But why are people disregarding these ?
17:33 heat shield back bolt is the most difficult part of this job. My 4.6 2002 Crown Vic had metal plate with a 13mm and 15mm sandwich between the plate that's bolted to the block. There's a wire harness back there that blocks your view of the bolts. I ended up loosening the 15mm enough to allow me to remove the fuel line injectors. I guess make you have more than an open wrench for this part of the job.
is that a dorman intake ,i've watched several videos on this process , this video is definitely the most concise and informative , that said is this car similar to 07 mercury grand marquis

Man i hate those fuel fittings,i am refreshing a intake and a electrical harness on a 4.6 at the moment, intake has been replaced with the proper aluminum piece but it was done by a amateur , all kinds of bolts loose, just a mess so I'm doing it again the right way and putting some new injectors, one of the fuel fittings came out fine, the other was a nightmare and i have 3 different kits to pull those devils out, if you pull one out you can actually "swing" the fuel rail out of the way but my car is much simpler than this one here, the idea of individual coils was a awful one,i have the coil packs, much more economical if something goes south and from what Ive heard on several coworkers that have cars and trucks with multiple coil packs they keep a few spares handy,a little rain here and there gets thru and your in trouble, excellent video BTW, thank you.
Excellent video. I went back to it several times while I was doing the job. Only one question... The insulation under my intake manifold is in terrible condition. The plastic housing surrounding the insulation is deteriorated and insulation is spilling out. I noticed the one in your video was cracked a little and you were able to re-use it. Mine is much worse. I'd like to replace it before I install the new intake manifold, but I'm having trouble finding a replacement. Any suggestions?

The EGR vacuum solenoid must be moved on a 2001 Crown Vic otherwise you may break it when you go to reinstall it. There is a plastic fin that sticks up from the IA aftermarket intake manifold that interfered with the original location of the solenoid.
Hey I noticed the knock sensor in the valley under the intake, would it be wise to replace that while you're in there? I'm not sure how prone they are to failure, but it sure would s**k to have to remove all that again!!, Nice Video, btw. Great closeups and instruction!
Great video. I have a question. I own a 2006 Ford Crown Victoria Police. Two of my coils have bolts that keep spinning wether I try to loosen or tighten the bolts. So now I can't change those coils or plugs. The mechanic in the dealer where I bought the car stripped either the bolts or the bolt holes in the intake manifold. So now I have no choice but to replace the intake manifold. So my question is. How do I know whether my vehicle requires the intake manifold with coolant heated pcv or not? Thank you for your videos and help.
Thanks so much for posting this, is the process similar/the same for a 2006 P71? I understand I have the drive-by-wire throttle body so it's easier to remove than the old cable driven one.

@@dennismorgan354 were you getting liquid in the spark plug wells?
Well, enough of that.
Removing the throttlebody assembly starts around 9:45.
I just needed that part of the video.
THANK YOU!!! Great video.
Thanks for watching our video! +jimisnotunique
Just an FYI. When removing the heat shielding bracket ( between the fire wall) on the driver's side just before the fuel rail removal. There's a possibility of having a smaller bracket on there just before the main bolt/nut. You will have 3 1/2" nuts on the back side to remove.
Okay so where are they cuz that's where I'm at
@@larrydalba3031 I followed the video and did just fine. Everyone always chimes in. If it was easier they'd have done that. There's a reason they didn't.
I found them way after watching the video that lil plate almost made me quit haha tugeye but I got it so it's all gravy after that

Absolutely the best video ever what's the description of every size socket and every size ratchet to the detail absolutely epic
if you dont have one its almost impossible to do... a set cost less than 20 bucks and any autoparts store...
I done this on 2 of my crown vics.I never disconnected the fuel line.I just pulled out the fuel rails and pulled it out and sat it upside down on tje passenger side.

I just purchased my first part from 1A Auto. I'll be doing the intake manifold on my 2000 grand marquis tomorrow morning. 1A had a price that couldn't be matched, along with free next day shipping. Looking forward to doing business with them again.
How much was it?
I realize most people are not going to clean their engines, this one is filthy. It makes me feel like cleaning. But I think you've made a very good, solid guide here. As always of course.
Terrific communication skills. It's interesting how many cool projects people are doing with those old crown Vicks nowadays.

All your videos you give details the size of the ratchets and tools to use absolutely the best put in schools to teach students

Really good and clear video, gives me a confidence to do job by myself. Thank you 😊
Yes outstanding presentation.
Thanks for the suggestions and for watching! +Ed Norton

Doing mine this weekend. I filed the rough plastic edges down everywhere I could on that dorman intake. Smooth, non turbulent airflow, Yes.

Every 4 years this video becomes priceless. Thats aboit how long these manifolds last if you dont drive too hard.

How much were they?

Can you answer what you did in regards of the Throttle body elbow Torque specs? He just says snug the bolts up reinserting the throttle body elbow but never says if they are torque to any specs or just snugged up good
I love your videos!!!! Complete details including tips to make the job easier. Thank you for actually showing us what to do when removing hard to disconnect parts like hoses, egr, etc and not just mentioning it and then fast forwarding or skipping through video. This is a great video to replace this manifold. Thank you.
just finished changing my intake manifold following this video, great guide
three things i would add for anyone else thats going to do this:
1. only buy the ford performance/racing manifold, all others, while cheaper, are garbage
2. you dont have to take the hose off for the thermostat, just undo the two bolts and move the whole thing aside attached to the hose
3. the back bolt on the plate over the drivers side fuel rail will be a bitch to get to
I have to agree on number 3! I took the windshield wiper motor out just to get to it.
What an informative and well-executed video. Thanks for all you guys do.
Jonathan Wright how did u get the bolt off
Right on step by step tutorial you save me lots of money you guys are awesome.
"When I remove it, you'll see where the ratchet is. You should be able to find it no problem." Finding that mofo and removing that mofo are two completely different things. One is like "oh, yeah, there it is ". The other involves running out of curse words and making up new ones. Lol
That was the hardest part of this whole job
The gentleman had a soothing voice not to mention he must be a hell of a mechanic I didn't realize it was that much work involved excellent video I don't think I could remember where all the parts go once I took it apart oh well I guess I'll take out my phone and take pictures of everything I do
So what improvements were made to ensure i won’t have to do this repair again in 100k?
Good question
The manifolds are plastic. Perhaps invest in an aftermarket one if they exist
There are improved intake gasket designs. The better gaskets are about $60 instead of 20.. Not sure what to do about cracked intake manifolds.

I just paid a guy good money to replace my intake manifold on a 99 Ford CV. Now I know why. Great detailed video. Glad I did not try this myself.
Thank you!!

Great video just did my 2004 town car, video was down to the tee on everything only problem i had was the crash bar at the back of the driver side fuel rail. I just remove the windshield wiper motor assembly & had plenty of room so my suggestion would be take the assembly off before you start & put back when finished
Stuck figuring out how to even stick a tool in the back of the driver's side fuel rail. I'm finding I might have to do this too.

Thank you...thank you...thank you! I made the repair and my 02 Grand Marquis is back on the road again.

+MJ Dennehy Thanks for the feedback and tip!
is that a dorman intake ,i've watched several videos on this process , this video is definitely the most concise and informative , that said is this car similar to 07 mercury grand marquis
+wrdmndan akdude This particular intake is not made by Dorman. We have a great source for these and also offer a lifetime warranty on them. Thank you for asking. 1aauto.com
yes the dorman sucks. go with the ford racing manifold huge improvement in performance. And metal inserts on the cop hold down screws.
Good time to change valve cover gaskets as well since injectors and coils are off
excellent video, I just did it on my Lincoln town car and everything is looking perfect!!

Just buy the Ford Racing manifold on Amazon it will fit your car perfectly.
Thanks so much for posting this, is the process similar/the same for a 2006 P71? I understand I have the drive-by-wire throttle body so it's easier to remove than the old cable driven one.
I would also like to know
How much difference is this to a 1999 crown vic? I have to replace same part. Excellent video, very thorough, feel like I can actually do this job. Thanks 1aauto!!!
+E. Ozzy Thank you for checking us out. While we do not have a video showing the replacement on a 1999 model, there could be some similarities but the sizing and orientation would be different. We recommend visiting other videos specific to the 1999 model, or an automotive forum where other owner's share their experiences. 1aauto.com

Wow you make it look so easy but I bet it's a pain in the ass. I might have to do this to my 2004 Lincoln town car. It's learning from the rear of intake manifold.
It's learning or it's leaking?
I have a 2001 crown vic with PI heads..the all plastic intake is cracked under the thermostat...I have heard that the Ford racing intake is best but it cost more...have also heard that the Dorman is not good because it is smaller and restrictive..is this one you sell comparable to Dorman? I apologize for not showing sources for what I "heard" but just remember seeing reviews
