  • In this video, I do some much needed maintenance on our ancient Lortone lapidary saw I have named Lazarus, because I have brought it back from the dead so many times. Here I clean out the accumulated muck from cutting banded iron and red jasper and put fresh oil in it. Then I cut a geode to test out how the rock saw is working.

Hi Mike, I must admit - you gave me a few chuckles watching this clean-up video. When I cleaned my 6 diamond saws - it was an all day affair! I scraped everything out with a putty knife. No bricks in my saws. Re-filling the 6 saws took 26 gallons of diamond saw oil from Shell. I had it delivered in 55 gallon drums. Looking forward to the filtering video! Thumbs up! Jim

I don't know anything about this, but what about using chainsaw oil. Might be cheaper if it works. Also that movie was Airplane, but I saw it on HBO in the 80s. I had a very strict family and got in a ton of trouble when I got caught watching that. Laughed too loud, they came to investigate lol.

Interesting. Looking forward to seeing what you use to filter the sediment out of the oil. I'm thinking something along the line of a fine meshed cheesecloth. I had a Great Uncle in Wisconsin who made maple syrup and that (or something like that) is what he used for the final filtration before bottling it. Brings back some memories. Now I'm suddenly craving pancakes!

Couldn’t you just use water or a water based coolant? I know oil discolors some stone so oil isn’t used. Other than voiding the warranty and a little rust what could go wrong. I’ve use a water cooled wet saw all my life.
