    Hollow kingpins break constantly. The reason is the hollow metal kingpin is not strong enough to support skateboarding . The kingpins are made of a harder steel than the aluminum baseplate. When a hollow kingpin breaks inside a baseplate it can deform and lodge itself inside the baseplate because it's a harder metal and can push the aluminum aside.
    If you have a hollow kingpin that is broken inside the baseplate I will replace the truck for FREE. Just pay to ship the truck to me. I need these trucks for research and for future videos.
    Steps to remove a broken kingpin:
    1. File around the broken edge of the kingpin bolt.
    2. On hard ground, hammer the kingpin down until the head of the bolt is hitting the ground.
    3. On grass or soft ground, hammer the kingpin out the rest of the way using your new kingpin on top of the broken one. The soft ground allows the kingpin to come out of the bottom of the baseplate.
    4. Push the new kingpin into place. Line up the splines of the bolt and with the grooves in the baseplate. When you push the kingpin bolt in, slightly turn the bolt until it lines up with the splines. You should be able to feel them connect.
    5. Put the socket over the kingpin bolt. It's important that the kingpin be able to go all the way inside the socket as the kingpin gets hammered into the baseplate. If the socket is not long enough, the bolt will not go in all the way.
    6. You can use duct tape to hold parts in place.
    7. On hard ground, place the socket end on the ground. Use another socket or kingpin and place it on the head of the kingpin. Start hammering on the socket to push the kingpin bolt inside the baseplate. This requires some very hard hammering to get the kingpin in all the way. Use a piece of duct tape the socket and the ground for some traction to help keep the socket from sliding.
    If you have any further questions send us a message. We'll get back to you within 24 hours (usually within an hour or two depending on time on your time zone).

    Soft bushing make it easier to turn but have slower rebound. Rebound is how quickly your board will come back to center. Hard bushing have a reverse effect. Tall bushing have quicker rebound because there is more mass deflecting/pushing. Short bushings have less mass so they are easier to compress but have less push/deflection.

    For the most part all bushings fit every truck, with the exception for some longboard specific truck bushings. Longboard/downhill trucks have barrel bushings that are little tall for street trucks.

    That is an issue that has puzzled skaters for decades. Some manufacturers have tried to fix this problem with new designs, while some have not. If only the nut is sticking out you can get softer bushings and tighten the nut down, and still have the same turning ability. See if that helps. If it's the actual kingpin bold you can try to file it down. The bolt tends to stick out because it is a harder metal to grind away than the aluminum truck hanger/axle.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I got your message about them being cruiser trucks. This is normal for your trucks. If you want looser trucks without having the kingpin fall off, get softer bushings. This way you can have the loose feel, and tighten the kingpin nut down.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    We've done some testing that has not been released yet. In our opinion and testing Bones bushings are not good. Their recovery time was low. This is how quickly they can compress and return back to their original shape.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Find yourself some "vice grips". These are pliers that lock tight. They really help to loosen stripped nuts. If you're in the US you can find some for about 5 bucks. Definitely an awesome tool to have for lots of other things. Lots of people have then so ask around.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your instructions are a little hard to read, but I think I know what you are talking about. This is interesting. I'll give this a shot.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @archzurfer The reason for grass is that the ground still provides resistance to hammer hard, and still allows the kingpin to come out completely into the ground/grass. There is a chance the carpet might work depending on the truck and how long the broken kingpin is. I doubt it. Two 2x4s can do the job too. See how I was talking about the old hexagon kingpins and hammering those in. You can hammer the kingpin out that way. You can lay the 2x4's flat, instead of how they are seen in the video.

  • @2ndAveScents
    @2ndAveScents 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    If you freeze your new kingpin overnight sometimes you can press it in without hammering and when it warms to room temp it will expand and lock in place. Tolerances aren't very exact in the skateboard world so some might require some hammering but it will still be easier the colder you can get the pin. I'm aware cold makes metal brittle but the temperatures in your freezer won't be extreme enough to damage your kingpin, especially since you won't have to hammer the shit out of it to get it in your baseplate.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Add some pressure behind the nut, as if you are prying it off. As you do that try to turn the nut. If that doesn't work you need to inspect the kingpin. Try to tighten the nut back down. You may need to file a thread or two no the nut as a correct path of threads to come off.

    Colors represent different durometers/hardness of bushings. There is not a select color that represents a certain durometer, so each brand uses a different color for each durometer. For example, a red bushing that is 90a for one brand might be red and 85a for another brand.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    No mechanical damage at all. It's just friction from the truck rubbing on the bushings. It can be pretty annoying. We are currently working on this video.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes it will fit. Pretty much all street trucks use the same size.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You probably need to get a new nut. It could be the threads inside the nut or on the kingpin. The nylon (plastic) inside the nut is used to apply pressure on the kingpin. This is how the nut stays on without unscrewing by itself. The nylon may be worn out and is not longer helping to keep the nut on. See if getting a new nut helps. Your local shop should have one for you. You can also try using a nut from an old truck if you have one.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    149's are a little too big for an 8 inch board. Better to go with 139. The rule of thumb is to not have the axle sticking off the edge of the deck. Sorry for the very late reply.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @K3V1NKR3W-Since the kingpin is broken inside use a new kingpin to hammer it out as I showed. Start hammering on grass instead of a hard surface if it's flying after you hit it. If on a hard surface that might be why it's flying. A cause might be the angle that you are hammering causing the bolt to bend. You could have a rare problem where there is a damage inside the baseplate, where a piece is jammed. You could hammer the stuck piece in and then try out. It might loosen, let me know if works

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ClowninAroun You can lay the board down and push down on both trucks to one side and feel if they are even. You don't need them to be even. A lot of people like their back truck tighter. It makes the board more stable for landing tricks, and let's the front truck do most of the turning.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If it is stuck do to rust, this will be the only case where we will recommend using WD-40. If it caused by damaged threads then you need to tighten the trucks and try to remove any debris in the threads, or fix the threads as much as possible using a file perhaps, and then try to remove the nut.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure exactly what is happening without seeing it. You could use a magnet to putt it out. You may need softer bushing if you like your trucks super loose. You got to keep that nut on. You may also need a new nut that doesn't come off so easily. Let us know if that helps or not. We can look further into the problem if this didn't help.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes you can rethread it if you have a die. We doubt you have a 3/8ths die. So it may be cheaper to just get a new kingpin. As stated in the video, removing a kingpin can be done but it can also be tough. What brand truck do you have with a titanium kingpin?

    Hammering actually was way easier to do. I tried this method and although it was working at first it got way harder as I screwed the nut more. It may have worked for trucks you got, but certainly not for the truck I had. Regardless, if it works for you that's awesome.

    Kingpins snap at random times, it was already fractured before it broke doing a flat ground trick. Were you able to get the kingpin out?

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you didn't live in Indonesia I would have you send it to us. These kingpins pose a lot of problems and are extremely difficult to remove. You may need to actually replace the truck if you can't find the right person with a lot of muscle strength to hammer really hard to get it out.

  • @RatVision

    I'm not sure how you cut the kingpin, but it's probably not budging because of a tiny piece of the metal. You'll need to hammer it back in, file around the end of the kingpin and any damaged area, and then try to hammer it back out. Buy harder bushings so you don't have issues with the washer flipping.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @fmskates You had an axle break off? Any chance you still have that truck? This truck was not actually mine. I needed an old truck with a broken kingpin, so I picked one up at the local shop. It actually had a crack in the center of the baseplate too.

    Vice grips. This is the best tool for clamping onto stripped nuts so you can turn it.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @comptonkillacpt Yes, but hallow kingpins can be even harder to remove because the broken end in the base plate can deform and wedge itself in the baseplate.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @TheSignatureK Only one truck? If you don't have a pair it's probably not worth keeping. You could use some of the parts such as the kingpin, nuts, washers, and bushings.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @csaw12 You can use a small socket. As long as you are hammering straight on the old kingpin you should be fine. I've never ruined a new king when hammering out an old one.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    There could be a couple problems happening. If you have a hollow kingpin then I can go into that later. If the kingpin did not break inside the baseplate, and you were able to hammer it down enough before the end goes inside, then there is probably a tiny piece of metal not letting it go down. You'll need to hammer the kingpin back in, file around the broken end and then it should be easy to hammer it out. Or you may need someone with bigger muscles (seriously). It can be really hard to get out

    They are really all made the same. The shapes play a big part, but that's too much info for a reply. We have a detailed video coming out in the near future about bushings. Right now just choose the right durometer you like. We are in the middle of testing and don't want to recommend a bushing at the moment until we know what the best are. If you want to know a little more send us a message.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    We have been asked this question a few times and it seems very odd. It usually ends up being that the person has cheap trucks. What brand do you have?

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Pivot cups are not something that a shop usually has available, because the trucks are usually replaced before a new pivot cup is needed. However, with downhill/longboards pivot cups usually need to be replaced before new trucks are purchased. A skate shop usually has old trucks floating around where they can take a pivot cup out of and give it to you. You can find them on the internet of course. There are 2 sizes. All street trucks use Small (5/8" Outer Diameter), or downhill Large (3/4" OD).

  • @RatVision

    @Scottde420 In the video the white parts are bushings. Since you are new to skating you should know that colors are different hardnesses and not just for looks.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @TheGrantorino72 This is an increasing problem with Thunder's, or any brand, that have a hallow kingpins. I need to do a video on this. The problem is that the kingpin is hallow to begin with. It's not as strong as a solid one. The baseplate aluminum is softer than the steel kingpin. When the king breaks the ends become wider lodging themselves inside. Think of flattening a tube. That's what happened. So they are near impossible to get out. If u are young have someone older try to get it out.

    I snapped my thunder hollow light kingpin, was only 5months old. Going back to ventures for sure.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @andersonjesse97 -- I've pretty much done the same thing. If you ride your trucks really tight it's easier for the kingpin to break, because too much stress/force is being applied to it. Over time the metal weakens and gets fractures, and just doing a simple trick like a shuvit, or even hitting a crack, will snap the kingpin off.

  • @SHAGGYL33T
    @SHAGGYL33T 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You need to press down really hard to get a hold of the nut so you can turn it. Try using vice grips too. After you get it off use harder bushings instead of tightening the nut down so hard.

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Mattdaskater69 You can try hammering it out. If you have 3/8th die you can use that to rethread the kingpin. If you are not going to reuse the kingpin use a file to fix the bad area.

  • @RatVision

  • @RatVision
    @RatVision  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The obvious answer is the bolts aren't strong enough to handle skateboarding. It can be the truck geometry that causes too much stress, and really tight trucks or hard bushings that cause too much stress as well, and the kingpin breaks.

  • @kester135
    @kester135 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I would have recommended partly assembling the truck and tightening the nut to pull the king pin through, little mechanics trick for replacing camshafts and such.
