Kia EV9 vs Volvo XC90: Who makes the coolest family SUV?

- The all-new Kia EV9 is a fully electric SUV with six or seven seats and ultra-modern styling. It's a great car, but for the same money wouldn't you rather have a Volvo XC90 seven-seater?
That's what Vicky Parrott sets out to answer in this CarGurus UK review, in which she compares the fully electric Kia with the plug-in hybrid Volvo. An apples to oranges comparison it might be, but with the recently updated Volvo offering up to 40 miles of EV range the theory is that could be enough for many families to do the majority of their driving on electric power.
In this video, Vicky compares the two cars for space and practicality, quality, technology and infotainment, driving impressions, performance, purchase price and running costs. There's a strong case to be made for either, but which would you choose?

Ev9 best looking ev suv
Both are cool but the ev9 is more impressive. Because it’s not a luxury suv. And cmon that kia looks fire 🔥
EV9 does NOT have air suspension and it DOES have wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
How the hell did she get this information, such a basic thing to know about a car and makes people think it has a very expensive and relevant feature, which is not present. very bad!

Volvo XC90 Recharge ultimate is over 101.000EURO and still options to be chosen and fully loaded EV9 82.000EURO , no idea why you have such a price difference

I have both, you are wrong.
That is just not a valid comparison. The only thing those two cars have in common is that they are large seven seaters.
What about the Maxus Mifa 9 which is also a 7 seater EV?
The EV9 does not have Air Suspension.
It'll be a nightmare parking either of them at Sainsbury's on a Saturday afternoon. Both vehicles look hideously frumpy. Ideal for the North American market.
You do know the XC90 has been around since 2002 its not as if its new.
Should have compared the kia with Volvo Ex90 not the XC90.

I don’t understand this comparison…other than 7 seaters, they have nothing in common.
Our local Kia dealer has 3 of their EVs on show in our shopping centre today, the EV9 was one of them. A very striking car to look at, but didn't look huge stood next to the Sportage PHEV. The dealer rep came over while I was looking at the EV9 and asked if I liked it. I said liked the way it looked a lot and the interior, then I asked (already knowing the answer) can I get one with a 3 ltr turbo diesel engine? With a wry smile, he said, "I'm afraid not".......
"it won't charger any faster than that", incorrect the car supports two-phase charging so you can get a full charge in 3 hours.
Not really comparable imo. One seats 7 adults, one is at most a 5+2. You should compare the X7 or GLS.
Quite unfair to compare an 8 year old car model with a brand new one. I am looking forward to the test with the new Volvo EX90 and Kia EV9. Promise that you will come with this test duel
If they are about the same price that is what counts to most. IMO
I thought it’s only turbo charged and They removed the supercharged in 2022

The EV9 is next generation tech, even ahead of the EX90's 400v architecture. The old XC90 looks like it's from 10 years ago and doesn't offer anything except the predictability of an old fashion petrol engine to go with some of grandma's leather livingroom chairs.
Presumably as an EV the Kia tank is free from road tax, while merrily contributing to tank like pot holes in UK roads as I continue to pay annual road tax for my Peugeot 106?
EVs made before 2017 from 2025 will be charged £20 road tax, any EVs made after 2016 will pay £165 road tax .
Cars in general have got bigger larger and heavier, yet according to people like yourself the roads are crumbling because of them as well as fear of multi storey cars parks collapsing 😂🤣😂.
In reality EVs are a couple of hundred pounds heavier than their Ice equivalents , but as I've previously mentioned one look on the main roads you'll see no end of SUVs and cross overs ( all of which make no sense to me) that are far heavier than cars we drove ten years ago .
P.s currently in the *road tax" is actually a emissions tax hence EVs pay nothing because there are no tailpipe emissions.
But to me we should be making EVs lighter and more efficient, but unfortunately the trend is for bigger larger heavier vehicles ( irrelevant as to which fuel they use ) .
EVs are around 2-3% of cars on the UK roads , but people like you believe they are causing all the damage ( not the fact local councils have neglected roads for years now ) 🤣😂🤣.
No such thing as road tax (and hasn’t been since the 1930s), it’s vehicle excise duty, which goes to the exchequer and is used to fund public services and infrastructure, it’s not hypothecated for roads. All EVs however, will be liable for VED from 2025 and the tank like potholes are caused primarily by heavy goods vehicles, 40 ton lorries tend to be slightly more damaging than 1.7 ton EVs, or even 3 ton combustion engine range rovers.
Damage to the road is the 4th power of axle load. It is the lorries that are the problem. I do agree, most SUV, are stupidly big and heavy.
So you have to access the rear seats from the road side 🤷🏻♂️

2024 vs. 2010
I saw the EV9 driven off a car transporter. It's massive and looks far better in front of you than in pictures. I think it's designed for the American and Asian markets, where they love the larger SUVs.
Volvo looks so dated next to the KIA
How far fully loaded KIA with 7 passengers on board will go in avg 70mph, if it is electric? How many stops you will need to do in the journey from UK to Spain in December or January? Those are the questions more important. I don't see a point of buying a family SUV, whose range will be around 200 miles top in the cold season. Taking into account also the factors of practicality - Volvo XC90 is much better.

I'm guessing that you've never driven a recent Hyundai/Kia/Genesis. The quality of their vehicles is certainly comparable with VW. The Genesis vehicles are comparable with Lexus and the mid range Mercs and Audis.

IMO vehicle manufacturers need to keep hybrids around for as long as possible. Pure EVs have so many issues with charging, cold-weather, infrastructure, software issues that break the cars, and host of other issues including the pollution it takes to make them and the issue of disposal once they’ve run their very short life.
I recently saw a post from a Kia Ev6 owner. The car had covered well over 100,000 miles and still had 99% battery health. So when you say short life...
Also, this is a UK review. We don't have problems with winter charging due to our mild climate. I suspect you are referring to frozen Tesla chargers at -30. In case you aren't aware, you may have problems with an ICE car at those temperatures, too.
Really interesting comparison and kudos to Kia that they can now compete at this level. I'd find it hard to choose as I love the Volvo brand and that interior vibe is just so lovely. However the Kia is so awesome looking with its distopian Sci-fi vibe, it's hard to resist. Cars from the Far East date tend to date quickly but apart from that, if I was in the market for this type of car, I would probably go for the Kia. The fact that the Volvo holds up so well in so many areas though is testament to the strength of the original design and the nip and tucks its had over its lifetime. The XC90 (in both generations) has been a class defining car.
I own a Volvo and have always loved the brand but I mean the Kia is the only real option here surely? Look at it! 🤩

@@JohnLee-db9zt it isn't bland to me. I think the design inside and out is smooth and easy on the eyes like myself. I don't want to be the loud flashy person in the room. I like chill and professional with the ability to hit a switch and put a mf in their place when necessary.

Looks alone, I'd go Volvo, not sure if the Kia is a bit too futuristic and 'concept car' for me but i can't afford either so it's a moot point!

In the uk there is a large tariff on import cars from China, that is why chinese cars have such a price hike here.
I have zero interest in either of these cars (especially that Kia, which really did have a hell of a fall from the ugly tree!), but Vicky is such a quality reviewer, I enjoyed the videos regardless. Cheers!

Almost the exact opposite of the XC90 where after 3 years you are playing russian roulette with maintenance/reliability…. Definitely a car to lease or dump after a 3 year PCP

Get the Volvo, ok it a older car, but all the problems have long been sorted plus, build quality is superior and dealer back up is better, and long term value will be a lot better.
Build quality superior, nope. The Kia is rock solid and had a much better warranty.

Cool suv would be the svt explorer the later aero noise one and a few others these 2 not cool at all that kia is a pos and uglier than a pontiac aztek.
The Kia is cool and sporty for young buyers. The Volvo offers solidarity, a high degree of luxury and unmatched safety. The two have nothing in common besides both having 4 wheels. The later suits my more mature tastes better so I’ll take the Volvo.
That Kia really impresses - incredible use of space and the interior looks very luxury - however I feel that the price is too much for a Kia - they have a lot of work to change the brand for me

Why would anybody in their right mind buy an EV?
Much better tech, doesn’t spew noxious fumes, far cheaper to run (assuming you have home charging), much more efficient than an ICE vehicle, more fun to drive - the instantaneous acceleration never gets old, pre-heating (or cooling if summer) - it’s great being able to get in a warm car on these cold mornings. Not sure why anyone wouldn’t buy one tbh, as long as they can afford it, which given how prices in the second hand market have come down recently is much more doable than has been the case.
Work hard get it as a company car. 2% BIK baby! It's an absolute no brainer.😎

exactly. Pricewise its far beyond reasonable. Practicaly smaller car than the EV9 that EX90 and alot more expensive. ALOT. And what I saw the demo car on tour the EX90 has lost all of its basic usability. Buttons have just vanished and its annoying as hell. Especially if you think you got up to 6 loved ones on board and you cant use the fully touch infortainment cause everything ins inbedded in the screen.

A kia EV9 cost almost SGD400K in my country, which is way overpriced. Definitely not worth the high price for a economy brand.

Kia is a budget brand with luxury prices. Would rather buy an Audi or Volvo for those prices.
There’s nothing budget about the top trims on the EV9. It’s luxurious and it’s a better value than its only direct competitors (Tesla Model X and Rivian R1S).
Just hope you don't have an accident in the kia, or keep it for more that 5yrs either way it will end up a piece of garbage Volvos for life
