    Volvo and Range Rover design aesthetics are so sophisticated, serene and elegant. Especially the interiors. They make anything from the German marques look positively vulgar by comparison.

      Truer words were never spoken. Modern German cars look like nightclubs inside where they once had a private membership feeling. I don’t like the laser lights in the door decor and I cannot figure out why MB, BMW and Audi have synthetic leathers that look like leather and real leather offerings that look synthetic.

      @@LlyleHunter Audi is still pretty much sticking to the older understated German look in the interior. Porsche as well. BMW's iX has a nice interior albeit a bi gimmicky. Mercedes is truly horrible with the over the top ambient lighting and gadgetry.

    “Valid concern about frontal crashes with objects in the front trunk” sure, I guess, but you know what seems even more dangerous to have in a frontal collision? A 250 degree block of metal with hundreds of moving parts and combustible fuel lines. I’m just sayin, if that’s ok, a suitcase probably is too

    • @EVBuyersGuide
      @EVBuyersGuide  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Here's the issue: the engine in an ICE can be accounted for in a crash profile. You can't account as easily for an unknown when it could range from an easily deformable object to a non deformable object.

    • @dylanwhite6539
      @dylanwhite6539 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EVBuyersGuide I mean I understand that argument, but i still feel the primary reason is that it’s a cop out answer for companies that didn’t feel like designing the vehicle ideally in an effort to reuse some existing components

    • @EVBuyersGuide
      @EVBuyersGuide  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dylanwhite6539 Trouble is EX90, EQS, EQS SUV, iX. etc don't share any existing components. If they wanted to put a frunk in they easily could have but they actively decided against it. In a crash situation you want controllable deformation in the crash structure. You have this in an ICE because they account for engine motion, etc. An EV gives extra room and therefore the hope of additional margin for safety but with a frunk you don't necessarily have that since the motion of the cargo is an unknown. The best and easiest way to control that is to limit frunk storage so you don't have cement blocks in there. I use that as an example because I literally saw someone yesterday loading cement deck footings into the frunk of a Mach E at Home Depot. That crash structure won't behave the same way as if it only had a gym bag inside.

    • @protovack
      @protovack ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EVBuyersGuide that doesn't seem to be stopping GM and Ford from putting really nice frunks on their pickups, which are much more likely to have heavy/solid objects in a frunk than crossovers. so it seems its a solvable engineering problem, some manufacturers just choose not to solve it. especially with the volvo having such a large front hood and over hang. they chose to keep the XC90 proportions for some reason. So its not like they shrunk the front hood to take advantage of the EV packaging possibilities and then no room for frunk. there's PLENTY of room in there. and so it raises questions to pay premium money for wasted space. you look at this vehicle and wonder "why is the hood so long?"

    • @EVBuyersGuide
      @EVBuyersGuide  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@protovack It’s more a question of priorities on safety. We don’t know how crash safety is impacted aside from Volvo and Mercedes’ claims as the IIHS and NHTSA do not test with and without items in the frunk. On the EV truck front, the frunks are almost entirely above the crash structure. You’ll notice the same thing in the mini-frunks Volvo has been putting in. As a result while it will clearly impact crash performance, it’s probably less than in an EV where it’s well within the structure. In the EX90 and EQS it’s clear that the companies just decided to leave a big crumple zone up front to compensate for the higher curb weight. It’s an interesting question without solid data behind it. Volvo and Mercedes have indicated that crash protection is the reason, BMW has been less clear with the iX dedicated EV platform, but nobody wants to say “here’s the data” for how it actually impacts things.

There are some that don’t but it’s not like going to a furniture store where you can pick the type of upholstery you want when buying a car and manufactures don’t even specify what the fabric used is comprised of, wear ratings etc. That’s certainly why leather is preferable in most cars although I’ve seen some automakers use pretty bad quality leather too.
