    I like the idea that some of the Chaplains have figured out who the Companions are, but some of them accept it. The Unforgiven have spent ten millenia hunting their brothers, because they cocluded early that tyey too share the responsibility for their crimes and that they have no authority to offer forgiveness. Grave punishments for all crimes, and only the Lion can. Now, with his return, the hunt continues, so that the Fallen are delivered for him personally.

    Lion was super violently angry about not being there to protect the Emperor, so mad I fact, he wanted a fight to the death with Leman Russ. So after driving the traitors into the Eye of Terror he returned to Caliban very short of temper and ready to fight anything that looked at him wrong. Que the attack and only Luther's inner circle knew the truth, but Caliban fired on him and he went full exterminus on everyone. He got a time out slept on it and has come back older and wiser ( I would say the equivalent of 50) and is now ready to play nice with the other kids admitting there was alot if mistakes and such on both side especially him.

    I worry that as more and more Primarchs inevitably return, they will feel more or less like glorified Chapter Masters and not much more. Lion is already failing to make as big of a splash in 40k narrative as Guilliman has, and this will only get more and more apparent as other Primarchs return.
    Primarchs are ancient, mythical demi-gods of immense power and charisma. They each commanded armies of space marines during the height of humanity. Every time one of them returns, it should completely change the status quo of the 40k universe. And I can't see GW writers ever pulling something like that off in a satisfying or convincing way.
    For example, will Corax's return feel so special when there are like 6 other loyalist Primarchs already running around? Will his return meaningfully the status quo of the universe? Probably not. Hence, not feeling like a demigod, but just a glorified chapter master...

    • @DetroitTyler
      @DetroitTyler 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Dude just woke up as an elderly man from a long nap, give him some time to change the setting. As mighty as these Primarchs are revered and their repuatations precede them remember they are only 1 man, and 1/3 of a thousand point army on their own. Reorganizing his chapter and supporting his successor's is what a good leader would do. He knows he's nothing without his legion, and by changing some protocols he might actually be circumventing Guilliman's 1000 Marine rule. His Chapter plus all the redeemed Fallen. So expect the Dark Angels to make a splash play.

    • @Cakesadamant
      @Cakesadamant 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I feel you, but I also feel like the majority of each primarch's power lied in their legions. If we keep getting primarchs but continue the current codex compliant chapter system then yeah, the primarchs might as well be glofied chapter masters since it defeats the purpose of them being around in the first place. That being said... 40k with primarchs and legions might as well be 30k but .. grim? 😂

    • @thundercrash4775
      @thundercrash4775 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      In some ways yes, in other ways, I think no. It's probably really going to depend on the Primarch in question.
      Guilliman having a massive impact on the Imperium makes a lot of sense, because logistics, managing vast resources and running an empire is quite literally his thing. He was exceptionally well-known, the Ultramarines and their successors are exceptionally well-known.
      I would expect a similar impact if Dorn were to return. He was well known as the Praetorian, THE defender of Terra. Guilliman and Dorn would have a large splash on the Imperium, because their reputations and Legion successors are pretty deeply involved with the Imperium.
      The Lion? He's just not. Never has been, probably never will be. His impact is far more going to be felt by the Imperium's enemies, because he can literally just appear out of nowhere, mess up your day, and then be gone just as fast.
      I think the Lion's greatest impact on the Imperium is going to be how *inconvenient* he is for the Imperium. In a lot of ways, Guilliman plays into how the "modern" Imperium expects him to be. He has to, in order to do what he does best. That is NOT going to be the case with El'Johnson. He does so when it serves his purposes, but when that is not the case, push comes to shove it's not going to be the Lion who blinks first.
      Plus, the Lion has only appeared in essentially a book and a half. Guilliman's had, what, 10 books to himself? I could be wrong, but I think the current timeline hasn't even caught up to the Lion. So he literally hasn't had a chance to have a major impact on the narrative.
      In a somewhat tangent, it's also just kind of a problem with 40K as a narrative setting. At its core, 40K is a big picture stalemate. NOBODY is allowed to win, NOTHING can ultimately change. That's not a setting that is conducive to big narrative splashes. Yeah, Guilliman had a huge impact, and they had to literally rewrite the lore in order to pull it off (look up the FIRST 13th Black Crusade from I think around 2006 to understand that).

    • @ShadyOakMinistries
      @ShadyOakMinistries 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think we're seeing a very consistent narrative paralleling their contributions to the Heresy. If Imperium Secundus is being rebuilt with Guilliman, Lion, and Dante, the rest have very important roles to play. Corax led the scattered legions cutting off supplies to the traitors and single handedly prevented the creation of daemon engines until the very end of the Siege of Terra. Corax can pick up fighting where he's needed as the elite of the elite against Vashtorr and the bugs. Russ led the charge against Horus, so Russ can be the challenge to Abaddon that Terra needs like Ragnar was to Ghazz. Vulkan and Khan used the webway to reach Terra at its greatest time of need. Perhaps their return will be an answer to the bugs or chaos getting too close to the home world like the War of the Beast. There's lots of options to counterbalance the return of the Silent King and similar Primarch level threats everyone but the Imperium has at their disposal.

    Thanks for the great video, I enjoyed it.
    I find that I very much like the new Lion; he still has his basic character traits that always seemed to make him pop off the page whenever he showed up in a novel but whether it's age or pragmatism, he's stopping to think for an instant before reacting and the results of this consideration have been very impactful to his story. For example, the Son of the Forest book could have been a bloody revenge story but by hearing out his lost sons for a moment and stepping back to view the bigger picture, Lion instead managed to round up a small strike force of his sons and did some good while establishing his protectorate.
    From his codex, I get the feeling that he's employing the same approach; he's not rocking the boat too much; rather, he's observing his current-era sons, getting their measure, consulting with them to learn what he needs to know of this new era and planning his next moves. It's as if he's taking a triage approach to many conflict zones and stepping in wherever he is needed most while letting Azrael, (who he seems to favor as he let him keep his old helmet) conduct the broader operations of the chapter. I would say Azrael is akin to Corswain when he was Seneschal to the Lion. Lion is still The Boss, but Azrael runs the day-to-day under the authority of his sire. I'm keen to see where they go from here; as a DA fan, it's just so cool to see the story finally moving forward !

    I love lore videos like this! As someone who doesn't really play the game any more but still enjoys the lore and modeling aspects of the hobby I sometimes feel guilty that most of the time I just put on your videos in the background as my offering to Algo, the great TH-cam Chaos god. I hadn't heard this information anywhere else, though, and having the new Dark Angels lore distilled in this format is a great help. Cheers!

    Guilliman broke Lion's Hexagrammaton, the system which made the DA switch specializations within the battle seamlessly.
    Roboute meddled in what was not his own.
    The Lion was the Emperor's Exterminator, his arbiter, a role which exists outside the nominal system, to do what is needed when it is needed, when you cannot wait for how the system would handle it.
    Guilliman is the Emperor's Governor, his societal systems builder, a role to perfect the nominal systems of the Imperium.
    This was the Emperor's plan, one to create a system to align doing what is wanted with what is needed. And one to do what is needed when what is wanted isn't in alignment.
    Guilliman committed heresy in systematizing that which was supposed to be outside his purview by the Emperor's design. And while Lion and Roboute may be more lenient with each other's actions (Lion will probably set up a new Legion system), its the Imperium which may react to cause a civil war which neither primarch wants.

    I kind of feel like GW is slowly working on redeeming the Imperium as a whole, changing it from something that is unending horror into an actual functioning society, and the current state of the Lion's lore seems to fit my hypothesis.
    As for the bit with Luther not "giving up" that Lion was still alive: my guess is that he *did* and his interrogators didn't believe him. And if the torture was being at all effective, Luther would have stopped insisting on that detail very quickly if they didn't want to hear it. Because it is *very* well known that torture isn't very good at finding out what the victim actually *knows*, it's just good at finding out what the victim thinks the torturer wants to hear.

This type of thing is not his strong suit to figure our, meanwhile the fallen run and hide like rats, many are old , many have went through to very bad stuff maybe suffering ireversable damage that can afect theyer mind and some even fallen to chaos or to rebelion. When he can judge the character of a fallen him self or a redeamed can vouce for them sure, maybe that how the redeamed got so big so fast, they can go and seek theyer fallen personal friends and judge them if they are salvageable or if they are unrecogniseable. Most of the times tho, the best corse of action is to just scrap the fallen , harvest the gean , make new dark angels under Lions guide it self.

The siege of Terra was the absolute perfect opportunity for him to secede if that’s what he wanted, since every available imperial military asset was too busy fighting Horus to travel across the galaxy to crush uprisings. I'm still upset that they decided to make his awakening a "he shows up millions of lightyears from where he's been canonically for millenia" instead we could've had a very interesting moment of the Lion waking up, shocking the entire Chapter, probably cussing out quite a few people in his own way, and then going on to do whatever it is he wants to do while silently reforming his Legion to do his job. Also Caliban being remade just feels wrong. Hunt still makes sense for his character, and being in the shadows is kinda his thing sometimes, but come on it's the Lord of the First. I don't get the same feel I did from the Heresy era with him anymore and that makes me rather sad.

    I wonder if the lore might evolve to see Lion El'Jonson reforming the legion, not as a singular organization but as a bunch of cooperating chapters, each with their own base etc but also coordinating very closely, to the point of crosstraining and seconding troops to each others' task forces. Though I suppose you can already paint an army with squads in different chapters' liveries.

      You must really be new to Dark Angels lore, or new in general.
      The Unforgiven *are* a legion, with just enough autonomy between chapters to keep the High Lords from breathing down their necks. If a Chapter has too few numbers, others will donate to inflate the wounded one until it stabilizes, or they’ll just keep them. They even sent Company Masters to a few successors when their own company commands were lost and there weren’t qualified candidates for promotion.
      Every time the Fallen gather en masse, it’s not one chapter of the Unforgiven hunting them. It’s several. The Massacre at Darkmor saw companies from 6 Unforgiven chapters. Idolatros (where the Lion returned) saw 3/4 of the Unforgiven’s ranks unite. Now, not all 18 chapters were present, only 3/4, but that’s still a significantly large force of marines.
      There’s your joint ops bub
