- With Summer temperatures (and unfortunately limited rain) a continued trend in Pennsylvania, I decided to make the trek to Western Maryland to fish a true gem in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic - the Savage River Tailwater. This 5mi. long stretch of water (below a cold-water lake) remain icy year-round and produces Brown, Rainbow, and Brook Trout. This is easily one of the nicest Trout Streams I have fished in the Eastern United States. Over the course of a day and a half, I managed 7 or so Trout. No luck fly-fishing, but will definitely return.
Way better than a comedy show, when in need of a few laughs I always check out these videos. Laughs for days
I dig the videos bud. From York so I regularly check for new places to fish. Keep after it
Yeah, one of the major tricks to the Savage is to go in October when the brookies spawn- if you can get a male brook trout they're really stunning, but what's REALLY impressive is how the MONSTER brownies hang behind the spawning pairs and eat eggs. Glo-Bugs will get you into BIG trout. btw, you need AT LEAST felt soles to keep from falling into the Savage River. No joke.
I may be mistaken, but I’m pretty sure felt soles are illegal in the Savage
@@briancorrick9130 I think you're right- I just read the reg. That squares- I haven't been back since the 90's, so WAY before the regulation. The chance of slipping and falling into the Savage with rubber soles is very near 100%.
I do enjoy the savage. Some of the holes have really big trout. Like 15 16 inches big
5:07 “even though I could use treble hooks…” Not on the lower Savage. Single hooks only; no trebles. Special regulation that applies only to the lower part of the Trophy Trout section.
We fish the savage a fair amount. Incredibly difficult but rewarding stream. Every time I try to make a video there, I never get enough content haha.
That looks like summertime. You're gonna have a hard time there past about June 1 or so. The water is just too warm. Most of those fish back out to the North Branch when the Savage gets hot. Try it again between March - May or in the fall. It's a fantastic fishery. It is technical though. It can be tough to figure out.
When you are fly fishing, specifically nymphing, are you fishing an indicator, or just watching your fly line? Seems like you have a lot of line on the water, and that will negatively impact your drift by pulling your nymphs (typically) faster and up in the water column.
That rainbow towards the end had par marks, I'd say it was wild.
Cherry run this weekend baby
Poppin cherries and drinkin beers
Cool
Yes, "touch 'em and it counts".
I thought the all river water is public even if it goes through private.at least I think that’s how it is in Washington state
Depends on the state. Some states the landowner owns the bed of the waterway even if the water is a public good.
Nice brown trout you caught! Do you ever take stream temps? It's the first thing I do when I get to a given stream. Water temp will often dictate trout activity for the day. My best wild trout days come when the water is right at 60F, or slightly above.
No treble hooks on the Savage. Upper Savage is Flies only and lower is artificial only. Check the section of the Savage you are on for regulations. They change as you travel up and down the Savage. The Savage is not a popular place to fish if you are from the area as it is fished so hard by out of towners and the fish are very educated. If you catch a couple trout in an outing, feel lucky.
Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeesh
The most boring river for kayaking, but really good for trout at least!
I think you would have better luck maybe using a treble hook with some corn or pieces of Hot Dogs. You'd probably catch bigger fish too.
Illegal
