With today's reaction, I'm jumping into the world of K-Pop for the very first time! Check out my first time hearing the extremely popular girl group from South Korea - Blackpink! K-pop is more of an industry than a genre. They will cover pretty much any genre, often times in the same song. BLACKPINK and BTS are the two that have the most international success.

Just to give you a little background on Blackpink: Blackpink debuted in 2016, they trained for 4 to 6 years before they could debut:
Jennie (1:27): born in Korea in 96 and lived 5 years in New Zealand, she is the main rapper and lead vocalist.
Jisoo (1:34): born in Korea in '95, she is the visual and lead vocalist and this year she debuted as an actress in her k-drama "Snow Drop".
Rosé (Park Chaeyoung) (1:42): born in New Zealand in 97 and moved to Australia is the main vocalist and lead dancer.
Lisa (2:27): born in Thailand in 97, she is the youngest of the group and is the main dancer and lead rapper.
They are currently the music channel with the most subscribers on TH-cam with 69M plus they have 4 songs with more than 1B views, they also have records on other platforms like instagram being Lisa the Kpop artist with the most followers (65,7M).

What is the difference between "main vocalist" and "lead vocalist"? Why are Jennie and Jisoo both "lead vocalists"? There can't be two lead vocalists because "lead" implies only one. Same with "main".

tbh i think it's more fair to say it's Teddy Park that's different from other producers. Because except for their yg style music, my opinion is that their concept and attitude isn't really that unique from other groups besides that they have a lot of budget to spend on extravagant mvs that compliment their flexy vibes

I love Blackpink, the biggest girl group worldwide.
BLACKPINK has an award-winning Netflix documentary called 'BLACKPINK: Light Up The Sky' (released in October 2020), which gives you a detailed look at the group.
Note: It doesn't detail everything that they've done.
As one person has commented before BlackPink and especially the groups that are in YG (their company) have a more Hip-hop and EDM style.
Blackpink are insane they're literally the combination of beauty, talent, charisma spread through 4 aces that can do it all
So glad to see you liked it. So often I think people get a misconception of Kpop on general and make the decision to not give it a try. IMO, that’s a mistake that most realize after they ultimately are exposed to it. Anyway, truly hope you continue to explore Blackpink. You won’t be disappointed. I suggest either to start with their debut songs, Boombayah and Whistle, or jump into the billion bangers club, Boombayah, As If it’s Your Last, Ddu Ddu Du, and Kill This Love (all over a billion views). Kpop is nothing like 90s groups! Their talent and songs and production and choreography are all on a totally higher level!
Agree 1000%. Girl/boy groups from that era never appealed to me, but Kpop takes it all to another level. Not just the eye-candy visuals but the creativity of it all, and the dancing... it's the dancing that sets it apart and makes it really hard for other countries to emulate or catch up to right now, because it takes a whole infrastructure to seriously train hopefuls from an early age. Korea was really smart to invest in all this the past 15 years.

The whole concept of Blackpink is that they have both a pop-y softer "pretty" side (their pink side) and the "savage" hardcore, more hip hop inclined side (their black side).
So going through their body of work you can expect to get different styles and genres but always playing with this dicotomy and delivering sick beats, fire coreographIes, fashion on point and Music Videos production level that will blow your mind.

Most girl groups tend to follow one of two styles: A cute girl concept or a darker and grittier girl crush concept. Sometimes they can also mix. Blackpink tends to be the latter. In K-pop, each group's fandom also has a name. Blackpink fans are called Blinks. The four girls in Blackpink are Rosé, Jisoo, Lisa, and Jennie. K-pop uses a lot of EDM and other electronic beats for the music, though some groups deviate from that and explore other genres. K-pop is kind of a concept more than a genre itself sometimes because of how much the groups experiment with their sound. One noticeably different example would be the seven member girl group Dreamcatcher, who are well known for their dark horror concepts and heavier rock and metal influenced sound, but they do have other elements in their music, including city pop, jazz, reggae, and others. Welcome to the rabbit hole that is K-pop. I fell into it in January this year and I have not gotten out.

TOPIC: BLACKPINK JENNIE
Her full real name is Kim Jennie (김제니), but other Blackpink members call her "Jendeukie." Sometimes, she is also called "Nini. She was born on January 16, 1996 in Anyang City, located in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. She is the only child in their family. She is the 2nd oldest member of the group. Blackpink members voted Jennie as the best cook among them. She spent five years growing up in Auckland, New Zealand. As a result of living abroad, she became a fluent English speaker. Jennie started her training after moving back to Seoul from New Zealand. A talented high schooler at the age of 14, she became a YG Entertainment trainee in 2010. She trained in YG for 5 years and 11 months becoming the member with longest trainee period. Same as the other three members of blackpink, Jennie came from a wealthy family, where her father owns a hospital and her mom is a business woman. Even though she grow up rich our girl manage to take her own path and she auditioned in YG Entertainment, one of the Big 3 or the biggest Record Label and Entertainment Company in South Korea. After more than 5years of training she debuted in August 2016 as the main rapper and lead vocalist of BLACKPINK.
The American record labels and Korean record labels are completely different. In America, a label will scout you and pick you up as an artist. In Korea, you audition at a company in hope of being a trainee. If you pass and become a trainee, you train for years in sing/rapping and dancing and other things to debut. The company will then decide whether or not they’ll debut you in a group or as a solo artist. You debut with people you’ve been training with or you'll never debut at all. Blackpink started training together since they were 14-15 years old, trained for 4-10 years and they debuted in August 2016. Blackpink when signing contract in their company it states that they are fobidden in 6 things----- drinking, smoking, clubbing, driving, plastic surgery and dating. But in late 2018, Jennie and EXO's Kai were reportedly dating but in early 2019, SM Entertainment (EXO Kai's Agency) confirmed that Jennie and Kai broke up, in order to focus on their personal careers.
WHY PEOPLE LOVES JENNIE MORE AND MORE:
HER LOVELY PERSONALITY
she is a pretty, lovely, humble and sweet person but she can be savage and funny at the same time. She's fierce on stage, yet she's really sweet behind the camera. The proof? She has a gummy smile that is as soft as cotton candy! Another side of Jennie that you probably didn't know about is her warm, bubbly, and adorably cute personality. Jennie is such a beautiful person, but she's also a normal human who gets frightened by creepy things, startled by horrific objects, and cries like a poor baby. As what their In House Producer and Senior Teddy Park said in their Neflix Documentary Light up the Sky, Jennie she is a perfectionist, she is very clear about her opinion.
HER PASSION and DETERMINATION
jennie is a kind of person who get out of breath, get hurt and get tired easily. one time on their concert she sprain her ankle while going down the stair, but she just continue to do the show and stays strong for the the blinks. during also on their concert she's not feeling well but she continue to give her best and would never give less, but the staff want her to feel better that's why the members continue the show without her and told the members told the fans that jennie just not feeling very well and she's thankful for blinks to make it to their concert.
HER BEING INDEPENDENT and GREAT ROLE MODEL
she is an only child, being strong indepent she is, i really admire her for that. she goes to korea to train all by herself because she has the passion to reach and achieve her dreams. we all know blackpink members are rich even before they became blackpink but they didn't look at theirselves higher than anyone and when you became a trainee you just have yourself, trainees are ostensibly allowed to communicate with their parents, the nature of the beast doesn't leave much time for it. Trainees' phones are taken away for almost the entire day because they usually practice 12 am to 12 pm a day. Actual visits from family members occur rarely, if at all, and only with approval from management supervisors and once on their life when still a trainee they lived in a small dorm together, and they only do grocery one a month where at some point they have to only eat scramble eggs and strawberry jam, they didn't want to ask money to their parents and revealed that they once live with cockroaches. Blackpink and Kpop Artists as a whole experienced the same situation and it's not easy at all even if you are rich there is no exception and even some other kpop artist are not supported by their parent to became one but they did it all by theirselves because they has the passion to do achieve their dreams but haters is just cruel and always gonna hate.
HER THOUGHTFULNESS
During their 1st Private Stage with Blinks. She really wants to perform for blinks other than performing their song, so she ask help from Rosé and the member of their own concert band to teach her how too play guitar so she practices it until the end of their world tour concert before the private stage.
HER GOOD HEART
BLACKPINK have donated 40M KRW (34,000 USD) for restoration of the highland and to help support the victims of Sokcho forest fire. According to the Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association, on 8th April, Blackpink members Lisa, Jennie, Rosé, and Jisoo donated 10M KRW each to their organisation. When the wildfire occurred on the evening of the 4th, Blackpink said, "we sympathise with the pain of the residents of the Gangwon area," they also cancelled their comeback press conference meeting which was scheduled the next day. In Dec 2018 they were awarded prize money of 20M KRW (16,790 USD) by Elle Styles Awards, but being angels they are they donated the amount to low-income and single-parent household in South Korea. And they donated another 20M KWR.
HER BEING GRATEFUL and APPRECIATIVE
Every fanmeets, concert or other events they would always got expensive gifts from fans. But you know what, regardless of the price, the girls would still jump for joy getting gifts from fans. There's no gift too grand or too simple for them. But sadly, In October 2021 YG Entertainment release a statement saying that the girls won't accept gifts anymore only written letters from blinks, they want their fans to use their money for good cause like donation or charity.
BLACKPINK is the best or one of the best most multilingual speaking group in KPOP industry. Below Lisa who speak 5 different languages Jennie rank 2nd as member who speaks more languages, she speaks korean, english, and japanese fluently and currently learning french with Lisa. She is the 2nd most followed KPOP Idol in Instagram with 55.2M followers and the most followed Korean Kpop Idol. She can play guitar. She is a singer, rapper, dancer, composer, song writer, model and she is also a fashion Icon where she models, represent, and she is the ambassador of the following famous and luxury brands:

As an American looking at it from the outside, I can safely say that there isn't anything "typically Kpop" in terms of the music. Blackpink is one of the groups that tends to draw from a lot of trap, EDM, and hip-hop influences, but they aren't alone. What defines Kpop, in my mind, is the concentration and focus on the performance aspect - the wardrobe, the choreography, the cinematography, the personalities - all of that is just as important, just as relevant, as the music itself.
While I am a huge Blackpink fan, here are some other representative girl groups to check out:

"Oh My God" - (G)-IDLE
Blackpink is huge - they have 4 music videos with over 1 billion views each - and "How you Like That" is only 6 million short of joining that list. They debuted in 2016 with "Boombayah" and "Whistle". They played Coachella in 2019. There is even a Netflix Documentary about them - "Blackpink: Light Up The Sky". If you’re delving into “Kpop”, I suggest going at your own pace. There’s lots of different groups with unique styles to most of them. I would suggest sticking to one group first and get a feel for them before listening to a different group as it could help you adjust to their style better. Personally I prefer BlackPink’s visual and sound the most as well as how deep their song lyrics can go. Aespa is also the second group I prefer. Most importantly don’t forget to have fun, I’ll look forward to seeing you check out more of their stuff.

This is the first time watching one of your reactions so I have no idea of the type of music you prefer, but the Korean music industry is so diverse that you will find many songs and artists you will like. Even the same group will usually have music spanning lots of genres. I highly recommend two of the legendary groups - Bigbang and SHINee.

Yes, PLEASE, more BlackPink! I personally recommend starting at the beginning of their discography but you don't HAVE to do that (it is your channel after all).
BLACKPINK debuted in 2016 with two songs, and one of those is THE ONLY song they have as a group where there is CGI involved in the Music Video. ALL the rest of their Music Videos so far have been real sets and effects all the way around.
Their debut songs are Boombayah and Whistle.
Boombayah is a heavy dance beat worthy of any rave or clubbing experience and it is complete with some of the hardest choreography the group has ever performed. They hate doing that choreo because they always hurt afterward.
Whistle is lighter, more airy, really chill and laid back. Both are very happy and care-free songs.

When people reference the western boy/girl group eras of the 80s-00s they mostly reference the industry practice of companies arranging groups. While Kpop did take a lot of influence from that in the 1st Generation, it's evolved over time into its own unique global industry. It really is a generic term for pop and pop adjacent music coming from Korea so it covers a lot really. There is a group, idol, and band for every type of style from cute school kid concepts to hip hop/rnb. You have Blackpink who's western friendly sound plays super well globally and are fierce, you have idols like Jessi and CL for more rnb and rap, Twice Itzy G Idle and more for more straight kpop, and Red Velvet and Mamamoo for reknowned uber versatile groups that are hard to categorize by any meter other than they're some of the best music talent in the world. Just depends on what kind of music you want to hear from kpop and a fan group can connect faster than a train to Busan. Kpop is generally known for being heavily concept driven, visually bold, quick changing, featuring mixed music styles and heavy beat changes/bridge/dance breaks.
