My ILBE Rucksack Rant

  • This video is about My ILBE Rucksack. Don't know whether I love it, or hate it. A bit of both I suppose but I don't think I'll be getting rid of my ILBE anytime soon. Primarily because of the comfort. I can load the ILBE with all my gear and walk for hours. In this video I'll try and convey what I like about the ILBE pack and what I don't like about the ILBE. The lack of compartments which is loved by some, isn't giving me some of the performance I need. Yes, I could put things in stuff sacks but thats not how I always roll. Also, the lid is a bit of a nuisance but that could be from my own lack of knowledge. That's where you, the viewer come into play. If you know something I'm doing wrong with the fit of the lid, or any other aspect of the pack, please comment below. #ILBE #backpacks #camping

Don't have a video... But I am a Marine and have worn this pack in Afghanistan, worn out on plenty of humps and I absolutely love it.
After I got out I went and bought one for my personal use. Absolute favorite pack.

There is a center attachment point on the lid. look for the strap attached to the side of the hood that faces your back, it attaches to a shared buckle used to secure the main compartment. this keeps the lid centered and balanced when packed light.
    hope this helps!

At first I went with the full bucket setup for this pack. Figured why not make it easy on myself with accessing things from the top. What I noticed most is that
A: It hates being lightly packed.
B: it just made pack management a burden at camp.
So I did two things that made a huge difference.
1: I setup the partition in the center. This fixed the tendency for the pack to fit badly with a lighter packout, and with keeping the top portion packed tighter, the lid fit MUCH better.
2: I adjusted the entire fit to suit the kind of packing I was doing (50lb+)
All in all, I learned I'm not ever using this for a day pack. Not even an overnighter or a weekender. This is my 3day+ pack. Anything less just frustrates the hell out of you with floppy space. It likes a tall packout, so keep your bulk items high. The sides can be a pain to access, so anything you keep below, make sure they can "squeeze" a bit to get in and out. Hanging the pack at the site is easiest for accessibility, taking it down is better once you're breaking camp. Out of everything though, I'll say this. This pack makes 65lbs feel like 40.

This is what I know about the ILBE:. The MC phased it out for the FILBE, because the former wasn't designed to wear with a plate carrier, and Marines were sustaining back injuries because of that.
Marines I work with hightailed it to the local surplus store when I told them he had them, and asked their opinion on it.
I got three, complete, with the assault pack, for $225.00, and me and my sons Absolutely prefer them over any commercial packs available. It sure beats my old ALICE pack...

I love the Alice pack as far as pocket placement and layout goes. And it weighs about half as much as my molle 2 ruck. I just hate the frame and suspension system so I modified it to mount to my molle 2 frame with shoulder straps and kidney belt. Now I got the best of both systems lol

I got ILBE gen2, too. It is the most fantastic load out gear I've ever used. It is a heavy load out modular system. I mean you are not just using it properly. This thing is not for a day hike or minimal gear load out. that lid thing problem? If you load this pack to the full, that won't just happen :~) I also attach admin pouches on the pals of webbing to store my little items. you can make your own pack if you want to with this pack. It's a freaking tough heavy duty modular pack can hold up to 120 lbs. that's why so many people love this pack!

Black Squirrel Bushcraft the lid will be always flimsy if u dont fill this pack to the full up top. the lid has 4 compression straps, easily expandable for storing more gears on top, beyond the height of the aluminum stays. that also means its not gonna shut tight. the marines were not using this pack for any sort of patroling or reconnaissance. they got the assault pack for that matter. this thing is designed to carry heavy freaking loads like up to more than 100 lbs!
thats why I really dont see a reason people like minimalists just carrying less than 40 lbs, would fond of this pack.

Out of a Molle II Large Ruck, A Rfilemans Molle II Ruck and the ILBE Ruck Gen II I prefer the Molle II Medium Rucksack, lol. I own and use all 4. Most of the time I take a medium ALICE set up with Molle II straps and belt on a 1606MC frame with a sleep carrier. If I am going oit for a week I like the ILBE with the assault pack, and waist pack stacked. Be nice to have the sustainment pouches in Marpat but good luck. I also like the seal line drybag 65L that is issued with it. The thing is indestructible. The bottom section was for the ECWCS Modular Sleep System. The corps quit using the ILBE because it was incompatible with their body armor. The new armor was rounded and the pack shifted weight to much.

  • @johncampbell335
    @johncampbell335 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Great overview. The MMSS [modular military sleep system] fits perfectly in the lower compartment. I use two MRE sustainment pouches on the outside for easy access to small items. I bought this bag for winter camping and it worked out great. My only complaint [as you pointed out] is the lid not staying closed tightly. I've tried adjusting it every which way and I can't get it to stay sealed unless the bag is filled to the very top. Otherwise, 10/10.

I bought mine new in-the -box with the Assault Pack. I am 6-3" 258 lbs and 68 yrs old. I tried it on flat ground and went a couple of miles with 30 lbs of stuff inside. It did not seem to comfortable for me no matter how I adjusted it. I bought a larger padded belt over the standard size and still had problems.. I have a military background and I have been backpacking many times with other packs with no problems. Still, I will try it again sometime but presently to go more than a couple of miles with this thing is not comfortable. My normal pack is a Osprey Aether 85 AG and that is very comfortable.

  • @Pellagrah
    @Pellagrah 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Military rucksacks are optimized for heavy loads. Everything that makes civilian packs more comfortable and convenient--lighter weight, internal organizers, minimalist frames that 'mold to your body'--this actually makes them really bad at hauling lots of weight. Lightweight fabrics will tear and fray, little pouches will be ripped to shreds, and that flexible, ergonomic frame will sag and bend until you wish it wasn't there at all.
With all of today's lightweight hiking and outdoor gear, not many people will be loading their packs heavy enough to actually reap the benefits of these surplus packs. That's the real reason why lots of people say military gear is garbage. You know how a pickup truck is really good at hauling things, but not very good at carrying people and light-duty domestic tasks like grocery shopping? Same principle at work.

When I was in I hated it, but to be honest it's the best pack I've ever used. I never hated it because of it's function, it was the part of walking at a high speed for 12+ miles that I didn't like. We call it the "ILL-BE" pack rather than spelling it out though. It's designed to take our cif and some other gear with us, so I'm not sure it would be perfect for a civilians typical gear list. I've humped out hundreds and hundreds of miles with this pack from 08-12. Some of your thoughts on it might be based on the weight and gear you are carrying, considering the standard carry is up in the 100lbs range. The pack was designed to carry a massive load for long distances. It's pretty overkill for what your load is, but you probably won't find a better pack in my opinion.
Another thing we do is waterproof the bag with compression sacks and a larger waterproof liner, and can use the bag as a flotation device. Getting further into your video, we did put our sleeping system at the bottom of the bag in it's compression sack. Your gripe around the 15-16min mark has a lot to do with what I said earlier as well, it's meant to carry a LOT of shit, so it won't work completely as intended until you fill it up completely. We use the assault pack for the load that you are carrying.

The only bag I did not get with it is the Hydration pouch. So there is more than the main big sack. I usually carry about 60lbs, gear and water. The pack rides pretty good, I like it.I also have the Molly Bag from the Army with the external plastic frame which I don't like as much as the Marine ILBE. My thoughts and Opinion.

Just watched a video from the Outdoor Gear Review comparing the ILBE gen1 and gen2 packs. He says that there is very little difference between the two but does say that the accessories for each gen are not interchangeable. You appear to have a gen 2 pack because the waist and shoulder padding is coyote brown and the gen 1 is black. You may have a gen 1 lid on a gen 2 pack. Just something to consider. Thanks for the video...I'm in the market for a gen 2 and its good to see the pros and cons

Good video and review, but I think you missed its value. I use a medium Alice pack, down east frame and molle shoulder and waist belts for warm weather. Then load up your cold weather sleep system in the bottom of the ilbe for colder weather or longer stays. The ilbe can be lightened by 2 lbs easily by removing all the straps and sleeves that you don't need. Just give it some real thought and load it how you want it first before you remove material. This pack is gr8 and equal to the bora bora arc teryx in quality and durability for way less money. JMO

I’ve found that around 42lbs. Seems to be a sweet spot on mine. Which is a good cold weather load out here in n fla. I looped the straps on the back of the lid thru the straps on the back on each side which gives you more area to work with. I also got a sharp razor blade and cut anything I thot I wouldn’t need off of this beast. It’s turned into a very versatile pack for a long trip. Hope this helps.

I have one of these and I know it is a better pack than I understand, so I am also in search of the manual before I start cutting a bunch of stuff off that I might regret after watching one of the pack mod videos. I, like you, am also in need of the Large hip belt. If anyone knows of a source, I am all ears. According to the manual they made the medium so it would fit 95%... so 2.5% small and 2.5% large means there won't be all that many of them out there I guess.

Good video. I have many of the same opinions of the pack. I'm no expert on the ILBE, but I have the gen2 pack and I have a different lid on it. The lid on my pack does not have the molle on the underside of the lid. I don't know if that signifies a difference in generations of the lids, and how they fit the packs, or I could be completely wrong. The lid on my pack does fit better than the one you showed. And you are right, it would be nice to find a decent manual, or better to have a Marine that carried this pack do a video.

I bought my ILBE from eBay piecemeal for a total of $57 plus $13 total for shipping. Love this pack! My biggest complaint is that it weighs 9.5 lbs empty! However with my entire winter gear, food, two one quart canteens at approximately 38 lbs plus the 9.5 is so easy to carry because of the incredibly efficient waist belt. I attached three matching Fieldline bags to the molle's and secured an Ontario SP-8 machete in one sleeve and a Schrade SCHF9 knife system with a Gerber multitool in the attached pouch in the other sleeve. In the Fieldline's are essential tools and first aid items. That lid issue was also a PIA when hiking in the rain. I solved that by running 550 paracord from the underside of the lid through the top of an opening in the back plate and secured the 550 with a Mad Max snake bracelet braid. Worked like a charm. There was one other minor issue with me in that it was "straptacular" as Chris of Prepared Mind 101 puts it. So I followed his lead by cleaning it up by removing unnecessary straps, buckles, etc. The long remaining straps I used 1inch Gorilla tape to shorten and secure them. Don't give up on your ILBE...Arcteryx sells a civilian version for around $500+

The only reason these packs wound up on the civilian market so early was the Body armor mfg. and the pack mfg. were on two different pages. Marines made adaptors that worked out great, submitted them to Propper. Democrats controlled the purse and ordered the runner up system to refill their bank accounts and satisfy the bureaucrat's grabbing at their ankles. The Corps lost a great piece of equipment and the civilian public found yet a n other piece of Marine Corps Legend to hang on their walls. Light weight gear can turn it into a great BOB/Weekend hiking/camping pack. 10 C's fit great inside the lid, add a change of clothes in a water proof 9L bag. Light weight sleep system oor ranger roll maybe a light weight tent or tarp system and your good 40lbs carries great for us old timers who will never March to War again. NOT Water Proof; but it is made water resistant, light coat of scothc guard will diminish water weight worries. Your lid is sliding back because its fairly empty; if you notice the straps under the lid, you strap your poncho or hydration bladder and there ends the slippage issue. I find many rants on the pack should be rants on the user, your body weight will contribute to any "PACK FAILURES" an exercise program is necessary especially when we get older. Body Strength is key in any and all survival situations.

You could sew a zipper or something onto one side of the lid

That is a great idea! I have since sold my ILBE for a smaller pack that works better for me. I am working on a video of that pack now, stay tuned!

You have the lid too tight loosen the front straps so they don't pull too hard

Yea, I tried that. The problem seemed to be more about coverage than a given tension amount on the lid. I have it on somewhat good authority that the lid was not the right lid. In any event, I have since sold the pack and have a replacement. Video coming soon. Thank you for watching.

Your waist belt is way too small, and you have the wrong lid.

Jeffrey Smock thanks. I've looked around for a different lid and can't find a suitable substitute. Do you know of a reliable source for lids? As for the waist belt, I'm a big guy so that's why it may look small. It's comfortable though...

I bought mine new from black star surplus but I don't see where they are selling the parts separate, amazon does have parts you may try there. it has been mentioned, but this is not a day pack, I use mine mainly in cooler weather when I need the room for layers. the lid you have will fit better when the pack has more in it.
