  • The US Marine Corps ILBE backpack may be the optimal starting point for your Bug-Out Bag. The ILBE (Improved Load Bearing Equipment) is tough, comfortable, roomy, expandable, and well camouflaged.
As a backpacker, I understand the philosophy of a Bug-Out Bag: carry everything on your person that you might need to survive in an unforgiving environment for a limited amount of time. If your environment is more rural than urban, an ILBE may be an excellent place to store the gear you would need.
Late 2013 is a prime time to purchase an ILBE ruck. Prices are dropping to unexpected lows, and you really won't find another pack that provides so much capability for so little money.
Make plans to visit the next Back to Basics Show, a 2-day survival expo that features the gear, services, and classes you will need to adopt a more self-reliant lifestyle!

Oh, yeah. I forgot to mention that. I got them with the packs; just haven't found a good use for them yet. Except as an insane-looking hat.

I took 2 of the MARPAT radio bags & took them apart at the seams. I then cut material out of then, so that it would cover the bottom of the bag. I then used a seam repair glue to glue the pieces on the outside of the bottom of the pack. This created a double thickness layer for the bottom of the pack. I love the pack, but I thought the bottom was not durable enough, due to the 750 denier that the pack is made with. The only other dislike is that the straps & belt absorb a lot water and sweat. Its a great pack all around though, especially for fall or winter use. I got a new ILBE, 3 day assault pack & water carrier, bladder & hose, all brand new, for about $200 about 2 yrs ago.

That's pretty brilliant. I have a couple radio pouches still kicking around, come to think of it.

Wow,... I paid $40.00 for ILBE, at a yard sale,... However I had to buy a waist belt for at a later date, but still paid only $15.00 for that,... I guess that a matching assault bag is next,... go figure,... (lol)

If you have been wanting to build a DIY Bug-Out Bag, late 2013 may be a good time to start. One of the biggest expenses is a decent pack. The USMC ILBE is a phenomenally tough and versatile pack, and you can pick one up in Very Good Condition right now for around $75 from Sportsman's Guide. (Check around, too. You might be able to find one in Excellent Condition for a similar price.)

If you're going to shop online for an ILBE, be sure to look for a site that uses the correct language to describe the pack. Surplus goods come in an array of conditions, and each condition has a precise label. You're looking for "Excellent Condition" or "Very Good Condition". Anything less is going to be a fixer-upper. Also make sure that the belt, shoulder straps, and lid are included. Advertisements for the ILBE "Ruck" typically just sell the main pack. No straps, lid, or belt.

I love mine. But just one thing, I don't like the way the sleep system doesn't have its own zippered compartment

Late to the party but, mine has 2 zippers with rubber pulls down each side, this exposes the bottom of the pack. I believe mine is the gen. 2 pack. Love it, heavy but bombproof.

Yeah, they're getting rarer now & it's harder to find one in good condition. Back in 2013 tens of thousands of them flooded the market after the Marines changed to the FILBE packs & for a year or so, you could pick one up for around 50 bucks on ebay in excellent condition.
