I enjoyed the review. The shoulder sewing on the shoulder cinch strap was my only dilemma. I’ve had it for 9+ years and it’s gone JMT, PCT, and various traveling (in that time). Cool thing is that after it tore, I realized that it was reinforced twice more. It held up mid trek. I added some HillPeopleGear hook straps to the internal (radio pouch) loops, and it’s held up well. I thinks it’s a matter of knowing the craft. If you carry light or for random backpacking trips several times a year.. this may not be the pack for you. But no flack = optimal heavy load tramp ruck 👍🏽

The stitches on the load lifter are unnecessary for civilian use. They are there because the ILBE is rated to carry over 120lbs. With them in place though, the lifters don't function like they are supposed to. It prevents the lifters from being at the proper angle.
I cut mine and the lifters function properly now, lifting the load off the shoulders and transferring the weight to the hips.

You gotta cut off that bartack. It will give you much better load lifter angle. Believe me it causes no problem.
I also did cut out rubber material on the sides. It was definitely an overkill. 725? 750? denier nylon is durable enough. I did a couple of modifications to my ILBE packs. I love em so much so i got 2 of em-one is brand new, another one is used.

It’s more comfortable when you cut that part of the strap so it’s only held by the top stitching. Mine broke 2012 and I still have it with no issues.

as a former marine i can tell you those side handles were life savers. if you ever tried to put that pack on by the shoulder straps with 80-100lbs you would hurt yourself. they work the best with lots of weight. my issued ILBE was in way worse shape than yours and i was able to use it to its full ability. Also the waist strap is removable to be replaced when it was worn. they are still pretty cheap.

Thanks for the view , I really liked the ilbe it was a very nice bag for the money and tough as nails , I ended up getting a new one in never used condition but then sold it to get a mystery ranch bag , but I still do miss the ilbe!

I dont know if they have any more (they also didnt come with the accessories I dont think) but Sebarms in Edmonton had a lot of FILBE rucks for less than 200. The frames are garbage though, putting them on a MOLLE 2 frame solves the cracked frame issue though. Personally I prefer an external frame myself.

The problems now? 1, Waist belt don't look buggered, seems like you want that to fail..! 2, Don't tighten it, sorted if not then get your sewing kit out and sort it. Does have a ton of strap's to lift with. 3, It's a load bearing system, bound to have faults.
Fair play on your views by the way.

also i must note to all ilbe owners and future owners fully release tension on load lifters before mounting it on your back then once pack is on and shoulderstrap are tightened then tighten load lifters to your desired position. fully realease load lifters after use. this will increase lifespan of the stitching

Many guys cut those threads on the weight-lifter straps so then they pull at a 45° angle, like on other packs which makes them much more efficient.
The ILBE pack, if heavy, should be placed on the ground with the lid at your feet, & then you grab the side handles & pull it over your head & slip your arms through the shoulder straps. That way there is no excessive force on the shoulder staps.
As for the waist belt, I can't see anything that some nylon thread & a needle wouldn't fix but if you're not handy with a needle then you can pick up another belt for under $20 on ebay which is probably cheaper than having it repaired professionally.
Thanks for pointing out these problems anyway as there are virtually no updates of how these packs are standing the test of time.

You're compliant on the versatility and design wasn't meant for you... It was meant for the USMC uses and needs.

Yes but as a surplus buyer I have to give a civilians views on it as its discontinued and the rest of these packs will most likely be purchased by civilians or ex military
