  • The USMC ILBE pack Is an amazing design that has an equally amazing story. In addition to a very detailed review and demonstration, I will share the unusual history of the ILBE.

    If you are interested in viewing additional videos about this amazing pack, PLEASE Visit Renaissance Marine's TH-cam Channel. During my video, due to my lack of actual training with the pack system, I did not know the USMCs instructions to attach the assault pack to the main pack. The Renaissance Marine covers the correct way to attach the assault pack in the second video in his series on the ILBE. After watching these videos, I am certain you'll want to subscribe to his channel.

    When I was in the Marines this was one of the few things I thought was a great product, and not just something some officer wanted to waste money on.

      I used this pack exclusively from October through May this year and last. "IF" this pack were being produced commercially with the same materials, specifications and materials, I would buy another one (preferably in Multicam, I'm a Multicamaholic) . It is truly a fantastic pack. There are a few (and very few) things I would change (most very slightly) but it is in my humble opinion the finest general issue pack the United States of America EVER issued!
      Brother, I'd like to thank you for your service to our GREAT Country! I pray blessings upon you and your family! God Bless You, The United States Military, and May God Bless America By Saving Her! I believe he is and will!

      Yep I love my ILBE that I got, I did like using one on the Corps also, though sometimes I still break out my large Alice pack, for old times sake, haha. The Alice is a great pack for when it was developed, though they suck when heavily loaded down, haha. I carried one of those at first.

      For sure man…where in for the change, from the older flak jackets to the ridiculous monstrosity that was the MTV? So damn heavy, haha. My medium was 55lbs with no mags in it, that was just the vest and plates, and empty pouches it came with. And it came in a damn plastic bag, all disassembled, in huge amount of pieces, haha. With no instructions, for the cable pull apart system. It was a nightmare, haha. But yeah when we got it, I was like what do they want us to do with this thing, fight tanks?

      @@boonedockery7220 The only thing I would add is a zipper at base similar to the FILBE to reach sleeping gear without turning out the rest of the pack.

    I'm after a new pack, multi-season, multi-weather, basically a mix between a hunting pack and a BOB. I swear man, there are 10,000 sponsored videos that absolutely suck. They don't dare go into a negative about a specific pack and a great deal of them straight up sound like shills.
    I've been watching these vids for almost a month now and I STILL don't have a pack.....bc according to packtoobers - they're ALL fantastic....okay. I've watched TWO of your vids and I just ordered this pack surplus, undeployed, complete, and I have zero doubt about my purchase. I'm a gear head but I own nothing if it doesn't work and doesn't last.
    Just wanna say thanks man, I love the stories and I love that you seem to be super enthusiastic about this stuff. You're a credit to your community. Please never change into Demolition Pack Channel or something equally absurd. Keep it real.

    Great review. I got to use both this pack and the coyote brown colored FILBE when I was in. I went through boot camp and infantry school with the ILBE and was issued the FILBE when I got to my unit in 2012. My main gripe with the ILBE was that the day pack mounted to the back and being a grunt we were always loaded to absolute capacity. The daypack on the back put a lot of weight on the back of the pack that pulled you backwards. The FILBE mounts the daypack on top that I found to be more comfortable.

    • @boonedockery7220
      @boonedockery7220  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for adding your experienced insight! Having never used either pack in the military, your comment was very educational and enlightening. I felt the same about the Large ALICE pack. Once you stuffed everything in that pack it looked like you were carrying a green whiskey barrel and it was as about as comfortable as doing so. We all looked like Quasimodo (Hunchbacks) Humping that ruck! I'm going to have to break down and buy a FILBE.

    • @matthewtaylor3301
      @matthewtaylor3301 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@boonedockery7220 It's a bit of a toss up who you ask amongst those that have used both as to what pack they liked more. If you do get a FILBE, I'd reccomend trying to get one with the 2nd generation frame, which has more reinforcement. I've seen failures with both packs - A strap that broke on me mid-hike at infantry school using the ILBE, and some frame cracking with the FILBE in extremely cold weather (I was in a cold weather unit 0/10 would not reccomend).
      To be honest, I'd be happy with either pack. If you're not going to be carrying more than 50lbs or so and keep the daypack light then the ILBE should be just fine!

If I need to run a assault pack I attach the Arbor Arms Tradesmen pack to the main pack using the buckles and a little modification. @@boonedockery7220 Once a Marine, always a Marine albeit a bit older and slower lol.
      A bit of info on the F1 mainframe which primarily is a hunting frame. The F1 has the ladder rack system in it to adjust for ones upper body but also I like it because I still like to run a war belt as opposed to just a pack and chest rig (ranger rack). I can adjust the bottom of the F1 to ride at canteen height on the back of the belt. When I run the F1 in this manner I remove the hip belt from the Mainframe. No quick release on the F1. Being older the F1 is the best way (comfortable) for me to haul heavy loads. As well if I don't need a lot of gear I simply remove the ILBE and attach the Tradesmen to the F1 with a couple of Eberlystock batwings. Also I like the modularity of the F1 as I can haul game, wood, ammo, fuel etc If you can figure out how to lash it down the F1 can haul it.

      @@azprepsteader1803 This is great information! ! I only ever used the ALICE LBE when I was a Cav Scout but as time went by I've tried many vests and rigs. Even though I'm comfortable with some of the chest rigs and have made multiple systems with them, I am still drawn back to the LBE. Simple and functional. I really like the British PLCE system. The cost of the higher end rigs are fair but, shipping is outrageous! So, I guess I'll just go back to what works for me and I can acquire Without a Kings (Or Queens) Ransom.

    I just received one of these as a gift. It’s brand new and 100% complete with original hydration system. It has the instructions in it and all the factory tags. At first glance and once over I was really excited and impressed as I have a nice backpacking pack and a nice hunting pack. This was a great video! I really enjoyed the history part of it. I’m not too versed on this pack just yet but as it came from the factory the assault pack is strapped on different than you have it. If you undo the outside flap on the front of the pack that you showed us, the assault pack lays against the front of the pack and the flap goes over the assault pack. The clips on the flap, clip into the Corresponding clips on the pack. The strap at the top of the flap will clip into one of the female ends at the top of the pack near the main opening of the pack. You can cinch it down as tight as you need. Then the lid clips into place (as it would normally) over the assault pack effectively securing the assault pack into place. It fits snug and does not Protrude too far out. Again, this was a great video, I enjoyed it thoroughly. Thanks!
    Edit: I just saw your video on how to put on the assault pack. Also, mine came with the large beaver tail. Does that make it a recon pack??

    It`s a sad story for the Marines. But not as sad as the Army`s story when they were treated with UCP... 😀 some military decision makers must be corrupt or morons. Or both.
    I love my ILBE, had 2 of them shipped to Germany when they were still cheap (around 100 bucks)... and kept the better one. I still use it every time I go on an overnighter with the boys. And it`s my BOB of course. Sometimes I wish I had the Recon version for more space (esp. in winter). Only change I made is a Kifaru waist belt, which is both lighter and more comfy.
    Thanks for the comprehensive video, I enjoyed watching it!

      UCP was pure corruption! Our government needs an enema! Currently the level of corruption in every area of our government is both obscene and palpable! Please excuse the rant.... I'm glad you own an ILBE and appreciate it as I do! The recon ILBEs are rare. The near mythical ILBE sustainment pouches go for more than $100 each IF you can find them. The last one (single) I saw on eBay was $125.00.

    The ILBE is effectively a Arc'Teryx's Bora on steroids so the foundation was there in their expedition grade rigs. It was born to succeed. I liked mine a lot. I moved on to a FILBE which I also like for different reasons which is Mystery Ranch's take on the MOLLE II, but with all the issues the MOLLE II design had addressed and it carries way better in my opinion than either the MOLLE II or the ILBE (not that either pack didn't carry great).
    Either rig is over-engineered for civilian use. No one is ever going to wear them out just backpacking a typical recreational load and they make the best BOBs and are perfect for extended hunting outings. They're like budget Kifarus or other high falutin packs. I used the IBLE Assault Pack as my EDC bag for a decade and it's been through 6 states with me. Bombproof. I still have it.

      Have you been pleased with the items you've purchased? I know when I first started getting into contemporary wild camping, I purchased quite a few things based on TH-cam videos that wound up not getting used that much or replaced. I realized that I had to really do my homework for a while before I bought items in excess of $100. I would really feel bad if someone made an investment on an item because of one of my videos that wound up not working for them. I do things very differently and I use gear that others don't or wouldn't use. I know what works for me, and why. I hope the kit(s) you build become personalized ergonomic systems that work for you, as mine has for me. I pray you have a very blessed day.

    About the time you posted this video, I found a batch of complete ILBE marpat systems (all three components) in new unissued condition. I paid just over $500. At that time I was seeing the assault packs (used) going for ~$200. I don’t regret buying it in the slightest. That said, I have an Eberlestock Skycrane 2 that I use for most of my excursions. I will never get rid of my ILBE though. I may end up setting it up specifically for hunting trips, or I might just keep it around for an extra pack in case of insert-scenario-here.

    • @boonedockery7220

      Thank you! I glad I was able to provide some useful information. I really like MARPAT! It is a fantastic pattern and even works well in my neck of the woods. The Marines used the base pallet (with minor changes) of the venerable Woodland Pattern. I was issued woodland when I was in the Army. The color pallet was really tweaked to be used in Europe, that leaves it a bit dark for about 1/3rd of the year. With the tweaks that The Marine Corps made it pushes the "Dark Time" to about 2 months a year where I live. Unlike the Army, The Marines save a lot of money by NOT making much of there gear in MARPAT.
      I do not own a sleep system so I have no idea how the system would be packed or attached. I would contact Renaissance Marine (on TH-cam) He taught me a few things about the ILBE that I didn't know after I posted my video. I'm sorry I could not answer your question. Have a fantastic evening!

    Im sure u remember me I watch this video every once in awhile. I love watching videos about all the packs I have here and there. Today I saw this video pop up on my TH-cam menu so I thought id watch it again. I also own the ilbe as u may remember but I also own the large molle 2 rucksack in ACU camo. I have to say I actually love my molle rucksack. I have strapped up with 70 to 85 pounds or even more closer to 90 to 100 with groceries. I don't have a car right now so ill take the bus to the store and buy a few weeks of groceries no joke. One time I filled my bag up with 9 pop 2 liters and food too. I've Done this s million times so heavy i cud barely walk. And if I sat down I'm not getting back up again. No joke. On the bus I'd have to lean against the railing. But my point is this pack has been put thru heavy loads and camping and rugged work. It's pretty comfy and very very strong. And I did most of this in dead of winter in Minnesota. And no breaking Nor a chance to. It's sooò rugged. Don't sleep on ur molle rucksack it is tougher then u may think. And with the square frame it's soooo sturdy especially at high weight .that square design is soo how it shud be. Better support and power. Give it a chance!!!

    • @boonedockery7220
      @boonedockery7220  ปีที่แล้ว

      I really enjoyed using that MOLLE pack. I never had any major issues with it. The issues I discussed on the video were relayed to me by combat veterans that were issued the pack. They all were in early enough that they could still use the old ALICE packs. Being infantry (82nd Airborne, U.S. Army Rangers and Army Special Forces) they used and abused the MOLLE and they actually preferred the the old ALICE pack to the MOLLE. Most of the issues they had with the frame breaking was from being thrown in and out of vehicles. The broken frames made them unusable. Tours in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq in very hard use and rugged environments were the basis of their opinions. For our civilian use, when we are in total control of the pack would negate most of these issues. Whereas the MOLLE pack is a great civilian use pack, The combat Veterans I spoke to that used them in the field found them lacking as a combat pack. My understanding is that the Army and USMC have addressed the frame issue by completely changing the material and basic design of the frames and have drastically reduced the occurrences of braking. I personally liked it. However after using, Mystery Ranch, Kifaru, and Granite Gear military packs, I found the MOLLE to be much heavier and overly complicated when decked out with the complete pack system components. All that being said, It is a good solid pack and for the price I paid for a complete system, I found it to be an incredible deal. Anyone that has the opportunity to purchase one can rest assured they own a well made, heavy load carrying pack that is incredibly comfortable. I personally LOVED using it in Winter as all of my winter kit is VERY bulky and heavy! At the time it was the only pack I owned that could handle the load.
      Thank you VERY MUCH for bringing up this point as it is very deserving of a deeper discussion and many that read these comments will glean useful and beneficial information from them! Thanks Again! I hope you have an excellent evening!

I'm always interested in other opinions, tips and tricks, hacks, mods, you name it as far as packs are concerned! Please share if you any info you can! Thanks again!

    There's a replica of this ILBE Pack (main + assault) a brand called Flyye. They have lots of colors/patterns to choose from. Works great as the original. Not sure with the quality but it would work the same purpose as the original.

    i wish there was a video on how to adjust the shoulder straps. just pieced one together (didn't want to pay 300+ so got everything separate) and trying to figure out how to adjust it all. My kid and her husband both just got out of the Marines but they both used the FILBE system so no help there.

It sounds as if you may have intimate knowledge of this pack and the videos may be moot. Thanks again for sharing this info as many that read it will learn from it!

    I got the FULL SET (BRAND NEW) with ALL COMPONENTS included for $80 from a USMC Vet who got it free directly from the military just as he was being honorably discharged. He didn't need it and sold it to me. All I had was $80 in my pocket, and the deal was made. I ride my Harley-Davidson cross country 2x annually and the whole kit takes care of all my needs. Hydration, tent, sleeping system, etc. The hydration system I got with it is superior quality and definitely not made in China. I don't know what you got, but it's not original with this pack. The OG hydration pack fits neatly in the big bag and the 1-day assault backpack that comes with the set.

      Awesome! You got an amazing deal! It should serve you well for a Very Long Time! I ordered the hydration bladder from "Sportsman's Guide". I no longer order anything from them. They have been guilty of false advertising far too frequently and I have not been satisfied with their so called "customer service".

      do you wear it all on your back when you are riding? Or do you strap it to the fender or sissy bar? I always have difficulties with a heavy backpack on my bike if I go for more than an hour...

    You attached the patrol pack wrong, it's supposed to be secured by the flap at the back that you currently have wrapped up. This allows it to be more secure and sit much higher on the pack for better center of gravity and load distribution.

      David, I have numerous packs (my wife believes it's an unhealthy addiction, but that's besides the point...) and even though I use different packs for different reasons, "IF" I were to have to choose just one, I believe it would be the ILBE! I have had two others and have given them to worthy brothers. "IF" I can find another and be in the financial position to do it, I would buy it! That is the only pack I own that I truly want a spare. I'm glad there is another out their that appreciates this pack as much as I! God Bless!

Decision's, decision's.... With the experience in all the packs you've used, what would or could you recommend? I bought mine used for around $150 to use as a bugout /survival bag. It was full of sand when I got it (probably from Iraq or Afghanistan) but it's in great shape. I think that it's awesome that a soldier once used it. I done away with the radio pouch and divider and cut some of the extra MOLLE off to lighten it up. I nicked a small hole in the lid when I was cutting the MOLLE off and the material is so tough that it won't tear when you get a small hole in it like that. I sowed it up with braided 50lb fishing line and it's good as new you can't even tell that it was there. Great bugout bag. I don't have the assault pack but I'm thinking about getting one although I don't really need it. Only bad thing about the lid is that if you forget to zip it back up you'll lose everything that you have in it. That's why I don't carry loose small items in it I keep everything in stuff sacks inside the lid as to make it harder to fall out if I accidentally leave the lid unzipped. This is not really a problem with the bag it's user error. I also cut the hydration pouch off and all the Molle behind it because I don't need it and it was just way too much extra unnecessary material. I lightened the pack up by atleast a pound and a half with everything that I cut off and took out of it but you have to do it very carefully as to not cut any holes into it when removing anything that's sown to it like the MOLLE. If you wear this pack correctly most of the weight is going to be on your legs and it is rough on your legs at first but you get used to it. Good thing is you can switch the load from your legs to your back. As a backpacking pack it's not the best option but as a bugout bag it's perfect. It's heavy but it's built like a tank and that's what you want in a bugout bag, reliability.

      Great Observations! Thanks for sharing! I always try to use stuff sacks and load cells in my pack for organization. I loath having loose items in my pack. I have seen several examples of streamlining the ILBE and if I ever find a serviceable used pack on the cheap, I plan on doing the same. I use a seam ripper when I remove webbing or pouches from military gear. I also use 3 or 4 ply waxed linen tread to sew with. It's the same tread I use with my leather work. Thanks again for sharing this information! I know it will useful for many that read it! Have a great day!

    Can you please tell me, is there a trick to getting the hood to cover the top opening of the main bag body? Mine wants to slide forward and the bag contents get exposed. Thank you!

    • @boonedockery7220
      @boonedockery7220  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From my experience with the pack, The only time the lid has fit well on my pack is when it was completely full. The size of the slide release buckles creates a sizeable gap. Modifying the pack by permanently attaching a ladder lock to the main pack and using only webbing on the lid to lace through it would definitely shorten the gap by close to three inches.
      I generally use a pack cover over my ILBE so the gap isn't going to be an issue with rain or debris getting into the main pack. Had the designers placed a second pair of attachment buckles lower on the shoulder strap side of the pack, one could use them when carrying a reduced load and the gap would not exist. Again, another modification that one could do to address the issue.
      I have been bless by having the ability to acquire a variety of different sized packs. If my kit won't fill the ILBE, I simply use another pack.

      It's amazing what a difference an extra row of stitching can do to improve quality and longevity. I bought a Helicon "camogrom" SAS Smock when I was in England around 10 years ago and wound up resewing every button and re-enforced several other parts of the smock. After that it was great. Why in the world that wasn't done at the factory boggles my mind. It was inexpensive compared to everything else on the market at the time. It took me a leisurely 2 hours to do all the hand sewing. At the factory with machines it would have taken about 5 minutes by trained sewers. I would have gladly paid an extra $20. Oh Well.... That's the world we live in, minimal effort at maximum prices...
